Arsonist's Lullaby

As you may have guessed, this one is inspired by "Arsonist's Lullaby" by Hosier. cw: arson (as you might have deduced, no one is hurt and they're burning their own property)

Draco was doing that thing with his hands again. The thing Harry had noticed first in 8th year and then hadn't stopped being able to notice in the past five years since.

It's what had drawn him to Draco in the first place, like a moth to flame (pun very much intended). There was something completely mesmerizing about watching him snap his fingers and then cradle the blue flames in his palm absentmindedly while he talked, or read a book, or performed any number of mindless tasks. It was sexy as fuck.

"You're staring again," Draco murmured, not raising his eyes from his book as the fire danced across his knuckles.

Harry hummed, "You're doing the fire again."

"You're as obsessed with fire as I am," he said, mouth curling at the corner.

"Mostly obsessed with you," Harry replied and Draco laughed and finally looked up for his book.

He stared at Harry for a moment, the fire winding its way through his fingers the way some people rolled coins along their knuckles. "You know," Draco said, voice a hint too casual and Harry internally perked up at what was sure to be a fantastic confession, "I thought it would end."

"What would?" Harry asked after a moment when it was clear that Draco wasn't going to go on without a bit of prompting.

His silver eyes latched onto Harry and his head tilted as he looked at him, like he was trying to parse something out. "The desire to light things on fire," he said and something hot flared in the pit of Harry's stomach.

"Tell me more," Harry said softly, voice low and seductive in a way that it normally wasn't outside of their bedroom.

Draco's pupils dilated sharply, "when I was a child," he said, the fire burning brighter in his hand for a moment, "I would sit for hours and stare at the flames in the manor's giant fire place. My parents couldn't understand it, they'd find me just sitting there, doing nothing but watching, like I was transfixed."

And frankly, Harry could understand that; he could watch Draco hold fire all day.

"When she caught me, Auntie Bella would say, 'don't ever tame your demons, Draco,' then she'd wink and tell me, 'but always keep them on a leash.'"

"What did that mean?"

Draco gave him a little smile, eyes flashing, "she could sense the bit of chaos, the desire for destruction, I think."

Harry hummed, "What did you want to destroy?"

"Oh, it changes," he replied easily. "When I was sixteen, the last time she said those words to me, I wanted to burn the entire world to the ground."

A shiver raced up Harry's spine, he remembered feeling the same way at sixteen. "And now?" he asked.

"I always thought it would go away," Draco said, "after I fell in love, after I had given the fire within me permission to consume someone the way I've consumed you."

Harry made a soft noise, low in his throat in agreement.

"The way I've let myself be consumed," he added. "But there's still this desire to burn down the past, to start fresh."

He nodded slowly, "that makes sense, actually."

"What if-" Draco started before snapping his jaw shut and clenching his fist around the fire to put it out.

"What if..." Harry prompted, moving to straddle Draco's hips, looking down at his lovely face.

Draco swallowed and rested his head against the back of the sofa, staring up at him. "What if we did start over? What if we moved to the states, or moved to some muggle city? What if-"

"Yes," Harry said, leaning in and pressing a kiss to Draco's lips, fingers skimming up his neck. "Godric, yes," he said, living in the world as the chosen one had only gotten harder since defeating Voldemort.

"What if I burned down the Manor first?" he whispered.

He felt his eyebrows hit his hair line, "What?"

Draco shrugged nonchalantly, but Harry could see the tension in his jaw, the fear of being too much. "Just," he sighed, "no one lives there. It's full of dark, cursed magic and even darker, more cursed memories." He blinked up at Harry, "What if I burned it first?"

He stared at him for a long moment, just searching his face, and finding only earnest desire there. "Alright," he said finally.

"Yeah?" Draco asked.

Harry nodded and leaned in to kiss him again, Draco's palms skimmed up his back and sides, touching him reverently.

"Pack for us?" he asked when he pulled back.

"Everything?"

Draco shrugged, "not furniture."

He closed his eyes and gathered his magic for a moment, letting it pool in his gut before holding out a hand and snapping. The contents of the flat organized themselves into boxes, shrinking down until everything fit into a tote that they could easily put into the back of the beat up old Subaru that Harry had purchased and refit with magic.

"Fucking hot," Draco said, pulling his face down and kissing him soundly.

Harry let himself get swept up in the moment, lost himself in the fire of Draco's kiss, let himself be consumed as Draco's fingers slipped under his shirt, nails raking up his back.

Far too soon in Harry's opinion, Draco was pulling back, flushed and panting. "Drive us as close as we can get to the Manor?" he asked, "then I'll get us through the wards?"

He nodded and stood, tugging Draco up behind him and out the door. The Subaru brought them faithfully through the night to the Manor and Harry parked just on the other side of the wards.

They climbed out of the car and Draco reached for Harry's hand, his cloak billowing dramatically behind him. Harry took it and they were being moved through time and space to a hill where they could see the whole of the Malfoy estate, the Manor centered in front of them.

There was fire flickering in and out of the hand that wasn't clasping Harry's and he watched the other man carefully. "Are you sure about this? You don't have to-"

"No, I know," Draco said. "And there's a part of me that doesn't want to. I loved this home when I was young."

"We could-"

"But it feels all wrong now," he said, shaking his head. "Can't you feel it?" he asked without looking at Harry, "the way that the darkness seeps from this place, it's killing everything around it," he added, pointing to the forest and the meadows, even the yard was brown and dead.

Draco shook his head, "For a little while, it felt like all I had was this fire burning within me, ready to scorch the earth, to wipe out that maniac and everything he stood for. I just feel like there's something more for me out there."

He slid his fingers through Draco's, holding the hand that wasn't currently holding fire. "There is," he promised, raising Draco's knuckles to his lips.

"I don't think that you can tame your demons," he said softly like he wasn't talking to Harry at all. "And I don't think you can keep them on a leash, either," he added. "I think the only thing to do is to destroy them entirely."

Without another word, he released Harry's hand and held up both of his, letting balls of flames build in his palms before hurling them down toward the Manor. As soon as those were sent on their way, he started on two more, then two more, and so on until the entire building was ablaze, flames leaping dozens of feet in the air.

He threw one last ball of fire, then collapsed. Harry dropped with him, reaching out for him and supporting him as they watched the representation of his old life, of everything evil, burn.

What could have been minutes or hours later, they heard the sound of distant sirens and the first few firefighters apparated in, wands blowing streams of Aguamentis at the raging fire.

"Time to go," Draco said, squeezing Harry's hand and apparating directly into the car.

"Where are we headed?" Harry asked, starting the car and punching the button that turned it invisible.

Draco hummed, turning his head and staring at Harry with a thoroughly blissed out, content expression on his face.

He leaned across the center console and kissed him, "You're so," he shook his head and kissed him again, "fucking amazing."

Humming, Draco kissed him back before redirecting his attention to the open sky, "the world's ours. Wherever you want to go," he shrugged, "we're free."

And it never really mattered where they went, there were always plenty of things to find joy in if they were together.

I'm cheesing so hard over here. I'm so glad you are looking forward to it! I don't know which day this one will be posted since it's turning out to be longer than originally wanted, but it's from a prompt that really got my creativity flowing.

The papers would mourn the Potters. They would celebrate the downfall of the Dark Lord without knowing the truth of what happened. They would revel in their rumors but with no proof it would all turn to legend. No survivors, they would say. No witnesses, they would whisper. A tragedy they would bemoan. Harry Potter was dead. At least that’s what everyone would think. But Harry Lestrange? Now that’s a different story, isn’t it?

'i'm going to be late,' says harry.

‘You’re not going to be anything,’ Draco says, a little petulant. ‘I didn't ask—’

‘Except,’ says Harry, and he’s still so amused. Only the whetted edge of his words, the hint of something darker, sharper, gives him away. ‘I’m going to be late.’

Oh. Well, then.

Harry rises from the bed and Draco misses his closeness immediately. He wonders when this will fade— the need to keep Harry near, the comfort of his presence. It's been seven years, and Draco wants him closer than ever— wants, always, to touch him. To be touched.

Harry is across the room, rummaging in the sock drawer for— oh holy Salazar.

He snaps on the gloves once he finds them, the wrist straps smooth and buttery. Draco wants to put his mouth to the juncture of his hand and forearm, that soft, supple place where leather meets skin. He wants to taste Harry’s fluttering pulse, lick it, drag it down to where he’s hard and aching and ready.

‘Robards,’ Harry says, advancing, ‘will have me doing paperwork for months.’

‘You really could leave,’ Draco says. Harry’s almost upon him again.

‘Tell me how I’m supposed to leave when you look like that.' Harry puts one crisply trousered knee up on the bed. It presses into the rumpled duvet, hard and unrelenting. Draco’s breath hitches. ‘Seriously, Draco, tell me how I can leave when— Merlin. All I want to do is push you back, hold you down against those damn pillows, and— Jesus. God, fuck. Draco, I need to have you.’

Fest rules

What is this fest about?

Drarry Mini Bang is a collaborative fest in which writers and artists come together to create fanwork. The writers will submit their detailed concept for a fic, and artists will claim one or several (up to you!) to create an art piece.

Who can participate?

You must be at least 18 years old at time of signing up.

We also expect you to treat everyone taking part, including the mods, with respect. 

All work must be your own, and we do not allow any kind of fic or art produced with AI.

You may register as both a writer and an artist, but due to the collaborative nature of this event, you cannot make art for your own fic. All the matching will be done through the claiming process, therefore we will not allow pre-made collabs between artists and writers.

What are the requirements for writers? 

Writers will need to write an original fic of at least 10k.

The fic needs to be a stand-alone, unpublished fic. You will be asked to submit your fic concept with an estimated word count, a list of tags and possible warnings/triggers and the rating of your fic. If any of these details change after you’ve submitted your concept and before preview day, you need to let the mods know asap. If something changes after the teams have been announced, please talk to your partner and let the mods know if there are any issues.

Please do not share details of your fic before you are matched with an artist. You can share small snippets and talk about your story after the teams have been formed.

Your fic must be complete and has to be beta read before the submission deadline. Should you need an extension, please let us know as soon as you can.

When you fill in your sign up form, you will be given a chance to decide what type of art you would like to receive for your story.

We will cap writers at 25 participants, but we will open sign ups for pinch hitters. We will try our best to find everyone an artist to work with, but due to the collaborative nature of this event, should we not have enough artists, the people whose fics have not been picked might have to be dropped.

What are the requirements for artists?

You can create a variety of original fan work based on the story your writer is working on:

- illustrations, both digital and traditional (they don’t need to be in colour) 

- moodboards (at least 6 elements)

- plastic arts (including embroidery and origami)

- playlists (a minimum of 10 songs)

- fic binding

- podfic

We will ask you to create a minimum of one art piece based on the story your writer is working on. If you would like to work with more than one writer (which would make us extremely happy), please let us know in your sign-up form.

There is no cap for artists.

What kind of rating is allowed?

Any rating is allowed for both art and fics, but please tag your work appropriately. 

We support SALS (ship and let ship) YKINMKBYKIO (your kink is not my kink, but your kink is okay) and DLDR (don’t like – don’t read), so we will not tolerate any shaming. 

For this fest, we will not accept any works that contain darker themes or tropes that are usually covered by the "Dead Dove" tag. If you have any doubts about specific content and would like to know if it will be accepted, please do not hesitate to contact us.

If your work is rated Mature or Explicit, the characters involved must be at least 18 years old (Hogwarts 8th year fic are therefore acceptable with any rating).

This fest is not anonymous.

What if my partner ghosts me or is being rude?

Please let us know and we’ll speak to them. This is a collaborative event - ignoring your partner causes unnecessary stress and anxiety, and we will not tolerate any rudeness or abuse.

We also ask that you stick to deadlines, because we don’t want anyone to be let down and end up without a partner. If you think at any point during the fest that you need to drop out, please please please let us know as soon as you can, so that we can find someone to replace you.

Harry dealing with abuse trauma/people finding out about Dursley’s treatment

Ok so I didn’t know exactly how to word this particular genre of Harry Potter fanfiction, but I have been reading some fanfics where either the teachers, Sirius or the golden trio find out that Harry has been abused by the Dursley’s and how Harry deals or heals from that trauma. #cupboardreveal

so therefore below is a list of fanfics that deal with this topic, this is pretty obvious but TW for child abuse, some of these I haven’t read yet so i don’t think any of them feature active abuse, more so past abuse.

hey soph! i don’t know if you’ve talked about this in here before, but i really do love your writing style and your storytelling and i was wondering if you have any book recommendations or favorite writers you enjoy and feel inspired by! i’ve been struggling to find books i feel connected to the same way i do with fic so i was wondering if you have any recs for that :) sorry to bother in case this is too nosy!!!

Okay, I have talked about this before but i'm gonna give a slightly different version of this list, that's sort of suited to like, books i think are specifically good bridge between fanfiction and published works and also that i love (i am sure i have recommended all of these in some way before BUT)

The Green Creek Series by TJ Klune (Wolfsong, Ravensong, Heartstrong, Brothersong) it's queer, found family and werewolves, but very hp-esque in the type of fantasy, like our world but there just happen to be werewolves (and also witches), and if you like the way i write you'll probably like Klune because we have very similar styles, in general just an absolute gem of a series

Villains series by V. E Schawb (Vicious, Vengeful), angsty anti-heroes and complicated friendships for dayyyysssss, i feel like if you like Regulus you will appreciate the protagonists of this series - victor

Simon Snow series by Rainbow Rowell (Carry On, Wayward Son, Anyway the Wind Blows) started very much as a parody of drarry fanfiction, but by the second book turns into a genuinely excellent stand alone series (not that the first book isn't great, it IS, i just think it plays into the gimmick a bit more, where as the second and third books are just sincerely good), but wizard-orphan-chosen-one falls in love with his school nemesis and they fight the big baddy and deal with the consequences etc.

A Gathering of Shadows series by V.E Schawb (A Darker Shade of Magic, A Gathering of Shadows, A Conjuring of Light) probably the most traditional fantasy, the first book drags, the second two are PHENOMENAL, you have triwizard tournament meets hunger games, gay pirate queer love story, brother angst, the whole shebang!

Harry slowly pushed the trolley as he looked at all the furniture.

“Why is it so loud here?” Draco grumbled behind him, just when a little boy ran past, a girl following him with a big blue Ikea bag in her tiny hand. 

Harry took a careful look at his husband. Draco was walking around with a big frown on his face.   Every now and again, he touched some small furniture or mumbled about the too colourful bedsheets. 

They continued walking through the showrooms, following those white arrows on the floor when Draco suddenly stopped Harry. “Why are we here?” he asked with a serious face. 

Harry raised an eyebrow. “Buying furniture for the new house?” 

“Yeah but why? You know we can,” Draco looked around for a second, “ Transfigure them.” He whispered the last words, checking to see if someone had heard him.

Harry rolled his eyes but smiled anyways. He had suspected Draco would be too much of a Wizard to do it the Muggle way But Harry had always wanted to go furniture shopping. 

They carried on their way. Yet after a good fifteen minutes of them wandering around , they encountered a couple fighting. The lady was arguing about something to do with the rug in their living room and the poor man was trying his best to calm her down.

They passed by the couple silently, though it didn’t take long before they found another couple arguing about the colour of their furniture. Should it black or white, or maybe a darker wood colour? Harry saw Draco look at them intensely. He wondered what his husband was thinking. 

As he kept pushing his trolley,he felt Draco’s hand wrapping around his arm. They walked side by side in silence, though it wasn’t as comforting as usual. Draco wasn’t the kind of person to not share his thoughts. On the contrary, he was one of the worst gossips Harry had ever known. 

“What’s wrong?” Harry asked.  

“Why did you take us here?” Draco asked back, a sudden, childish tone in his voice.

“I already told you,” Harry said. “To buy furniture for the new house.

“No.” Draco shook his head. “What’s the real reason?”

As a multi-shipper, I have a theory about people who ship Jily or Jegulus exclusively and am curious how accurate it is. The theory goes that exclusive shippers fall into a few camps (or a combination of them). These theories are entirely based on my own observations and not on any statistical data.

Jily-exclusive:

One, they need for Harry to exist and/or prefer straight James and/or Lily. This tends to be predominately straight people or those that prefer canon to fanon from what I’ve seen. Lily can be a very relatable character and I think some of this is a self-insert, but not necessarily everyone views it that way.

Two, they like the tidy world of Wolfstar, Dorlene, and Jily. One mlm, one wlw, one straight ship. This tends to be predominantly queer people and allies. I think it stems from the desire to see queer ships normalised in straight society. These readers/writers prefer a more realistic portrayal of these characters based somewhat in canon.

Jegulus-exclusive:

One, the opposite of the group above. They want every ship to be queer and to live a world where queer love is celebrated and accepted openly. Quite often this group is queer people who are tired of seeing homophobia as a theme in every mlm or wlw fic and who abandon canon entirely. Often, this group enjoys trans Regulus and/or James too.

Two, Drarry shippers who have joined the Marauders fandom. This group is quite varied, but already comfortable with the enemy to lovers trope, Slytherins/Gryffindors, and Potter/Black family dynamic. Jegulus is a variant of Drarry in their minds. This group is a big fan of AUs.

Three, this group want to explore darker themes and find Regulus Black to be the perfect morally-grey character to follow because he does have a redemption arc. These Jegulus shippers enjoy seeing James either drawn to the dark side or saving Regulus from it.

I would love to hear others thoughts on this. None of these groups are bad or “wrong,” it’s just what I’ve observed in the fandom.

hahaha I know what this was in response to. as a kid I HAAATED draco malfoy. I thought he was (and we didn't have this stunning turn-of-phrase back in the day) the epitome of a spoiled nepobaby, nasty, prejudiced, the worst distillation of school bully, more money than sense.

as an adult I think his wealth should be seized and equitably distributed -

BUT - I think this makes him a great character. I'm not one for cheap draco redemption arcs. he is a product of his upbringing and I want him written as such, flaws and all.

I can't say I read dramione; maybe I get frustrated when she enters his 24 carat gold-encrusted home and is overcome at every single dress he has custom-made for her and her own personal make-up artist and gets wetter than niagra falls over how nicely he treats his loyal and devoted house-elf who singularly raised him in an abusive household because female characters are shallow and can forgive seven years of vile bullying with an LV (louis vuitton not lord voldemort although I would probably buy his designs because have you SEEN the dark mark) bag and being pampered and then becomes his high-society wife rather than become the minister for magic and smash the system blah blah blah ...

drarry, however - yes. I can see it. pleaaase give me your recs. the darker the better.

Mourning Moon

Draco woke up on a Friday morning in a field hospital in Grasmere, without a single memory of how he had got there. The last thing he remembered was being in London, not two streets away from his tiny bedsit, getting a very late takeaway dinner in the only burger joint still open at that time of the night. He was sheltering from the rain and unwrapping his bean burger—no tomatoes, extra gherkins—and had felt rather than seen something moving in the darker shadows beyond the mouth of the alleyway.

And that was all there was, nothing but a horrifying blank spot in his memory before waking up here on a rickety stretcher, feeling like he had been turned inside out. His shoulder was hurting badly, the pain maybe even worse than when he took the Mark, and he could tell from the thickness of the bandages that whatever had happened to him, it was bad. He could smell the protective webbing of healing charms packed around the wound, and could feel the dittany busily knitting away at the flesh.

“Another one?”

The Healer—who for all Draco knew wasn’t even a real Healer, just someone with an O in Potions who was handy with an Episkey—wasn’t even looking at his face as she spoke, just scribbling busily on a chart and then running a cold, assessing hand over Draco’s sternum. She raised her wand to his skin.

“Another what?” Draco asked rudely, just to make the Healer look at him properly.

“I wasn’t talking to you.” Her voice was cool, the spark of her magic at his shoulder something like relief and something like an invasion. Behind Draco, there was a small shifting sound, a rustle of air and greenery and the warmth of something too familiar. The back of his neck prickled, but the Healer held him firmly in place.

Draco could smell the woman’s cold antiseptic scent and below that the sourness of too much coffee and the ripe smell of her body after what must have been a long shift. He could smell the ink on the quill nib, the same metallic salt to the smell as blood, and he knew then what must have happened, his heart kicking faster, the steep jump on the monitoring spell making the Healer frown. Draco allowed himself to stretch his arms, feeling the way his bones tightened under the skin, wrist bones locking for a second, making him think of lengthening strides, the wild rush of the chase, the thrill of a body made exactly fit for purpose. It was really quite unlike himself, Draco thought, looking down at his own bare torso, pale as a grub, his fingers scarred and splintered from chisels and raw wood, his Mark still there, like it always would be, inescapable.

“What happened to me?” Draco asked, needing to hear it.

“Werewolf. Bad bite,” came a voice—his voice—and Draco’s flesh pebbled into gooseflesh as though in a fresh breeze. “You’re lucky we were already onto him. If we hadn’t arrived when we did...”

“Quite right.” The Healer sounded disapproving. “You were lucky tonight, Mr Malfoy. That bite was designed to do some serious damage. Any deeper and you wouldn’t be here to tell the tale.” Her quill scraped against the chart again before coming to a decisive stop as she plucked it out of the air and shoved it into her pocket. “It’s almost as though it was… personal. We won't know for certain until the next full moon, but given the severity of the bite I think I should prescribe wolfbane. I'll check the dispensary.”

She was gone from the tent before Draco could reply, before the shame crept in a flush of heat from his chest up, before he could tell her he knew it was personal, before he could ask if there was anything that could be done for him. There wasn’t; he already knew the bite had taken, the wolf was in his blood. He could feel it as surely as though the fangs were still clamped down on him.

“It’s always personal with Greyback,” Potter said, moving around the stretcher so Draco could see him. Draco felt very suddenly like lying back down and having a messy cry. “If that’s any consolation.” He reached out a hand and patted Draco’s good arm.

It was almost too much, a sensory overload, Draco’s mouth suddenly wet and getting wetter, a prickle of sweat over his top lip, a greying fuzz across his vision before he blinked the colour back into the room.

“You alright?” Potter, at his shoulder, the scent of him already unmistakable.

“I’m—” Draco began, and then stopped before it turned into a growl at the sudden shift in the air, like a turning breeze. Not a threat, exactly, but something equally new and unsettling, the dangerous rolling whiff, the urge to take or be taken. He raised his head, inhaled. “Oh. You. You’re one too?”

This is a Teen Wolf fandom classic for a reason. There's something so captivating about the way this fic flits from one moment in the past to the present, and how all the clues are laid out in front of you and it all culminates into something so gloriously written. One of the best written fight scenes I've ever read. Made me want to learn how to wield a glaive, so that's something.

Fuck “death of the author” I have a new solution to Harry Potter. From now on, the only canon I will acknowledge the existence of is “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” the movie. Not because it’s the best movie, even though that can be reason enough, but also:

The movie builds on the story of the book and expands it to such a great extent that it can exist on it’s own merit. I remember as I child watching the movie first, liking it so much that I wanted to read the book, and when I finally got to the fun part of the story, where the characters travel back in time, sneak around and solve the mystery.. - the book ends. All the fun stuff are only in the movie, which I deem enough of a reason for the movie to be considered it’s own thing.

Every ship that the fandom loves is in this movie. Alfonso Cuaron, being the mad genius that he is, even back then knew how prejudice she-who-must-not-be-named is, so he secretly told Lupin’s actor to play gay and in love but to not tell anyone about it. This action single-handedly brought to canon the entire Marauders fandom with wolfstar in the lead. Apart from that, we got Drarry being their usual selves (was Draco sending a paper bird to Harry in this movie, I’m not sure, but they were definitely in their “i had a crush and didn’t know how to deal with it so I wrote him a letter that said “leave my school” era). And let’s not forget Hermione punching Draco in the face which is the beginning of the Dramione enemies to lovers arc. We got Ron x Hermione, Harry x Hermione, literally every major ship started here.

The theme of characters being black and white, good and bad. From Sirius being considered a criminal to finding out he was innocent, Lupin being a nice teacher but also a dangerous werewolf, Harry being the protagonist but also threatening the Dursleys with magic etc. You cannot convince me that this was done intentionally in the book, but I’m 100% sure it was on purpose in the movie. The way the movie portrays it is so impactful. For example Snape being Neville, a student, biggest fear, but also trying to save the trio at the end of the movie. This had such an effect that people still quote it in their argument for or against Snape.

The movie is just a million times better than the book. It also changed the direction of the series to a darker tone, which I can argue, means that the other movies derived from this one, making this one the original and the other ones fan fiction. The cinematography is breathtaking, the characters are fleshed out, the conflict is intense, even the time travel was explained in a way that is intriguing but also easy to understand for children. Nothing else is canon to me from now on, only this movie.

forced proximity of any kind

i've answered specifically about one example of this - marriage law fics - here, but the main trope i'm a slut for is absolutely, one hundred percent, without a doubt anything which requires two people who don't want to have to spend time together having to spend time together. with sexy results.

enemies-to-lovers

let's all be honest, one's emotional investment in one's enemy is often more profound than in one's friend. let's also be honest, people become enemies because they have things in common. combine those similarities with the emotional investment? sexy results.

narrative mirror pairings

unsurprisingly, there's often quite a lot of overlap between this and the above. the harry potter series loves assigning its characters to narrative pairs whose roles in the story are the mirror images of each other, but whose personalities, dreams, desires, experiences, motivations etc. are often very similar. and the narrative mirror pairings which fall under this category are always exceptional: harry potter/tom riddle; draco malfoy/ron weasley (getting slept on because of drarry); sirius black/severus snape and so on... sexy results.

magical worldbuilding which feels magical

a lot of fan-fiction falls into one (or both) of two categories: it deals with considerably darker or drier topics (especially when it comes to thinking about how the wizarding state actually works and/or how it changes after voldemort's death) than the canon series; and it serves as a vehicle for the author to talk about aspects of muggle culture they enjoy (this is particularly the case in marauders fics and it drives me mad - none of those children have heard a single piece of cool music in their lives).

but the canon series feels so magical because the worldbuilding is incredibly whimsical, even in the darker later books. something is lost, i think, when wizarding clothing isn't ostentatious and colourful, or wizarding hobbies aren't exaggerated pastiches of muggle hobbies, or wizarding houses are devoid of eccentric kitchen appliances which talk back to you, or all wizards are immediately familiar with the muggle world. i can't express how much i respect it when authors invent their own radio plays or wizarding bands or children's toys.

and that whimsy can exist with a look at deep topics - indeed, it does frequently in one of my favourite literary genres: golden age detective fiction. in fact, i think it makes the dark themes and how they're being interrogated stand out all the clearer. which brings me to my next point...

allowing the characters to be funny

by this i don't mean crack fics - although crack treated seriously is definitely a trope i adore - but finding space for the fact that almost all of the main characters in the series - all the way along a spectrum from the main trio, to ginny, to sirius, to dumbledore, to snape, to voldemort (he's so camp! lean into it!) - are extremely funny, even when in serious situations or discussing serious things.

unfortunately, it is all too common to find - especially in things dealing with the immediate aftermath of either war - that everyone is in their widow's weeds and speaking like they've swallowed a psychology textbook. but actually, harry and ron aren't going to be sitting down for a deep and meaningful using all sorts of 'i feel' statements. they're going to be chatting shit.

[there's a bit of unsolicited advice here, which can, like all unsolicited advice, of course be ignored: this sort of therapy-speak, every-emotion-is-articulated conversational style is something which immediately gives away an author as american (generally, the sort of emotional openness which, in the usa, indicates authenticity will be read as the opposite in the uk - being very earnest is typically perceived as rude, expressing your emotional reaction to everything as fake). if you're looking for a way to make your writing sound more british, the best thing you can do is read ron, and see - as @whinlatter says in this post about him - that his sense of humour isn't evidence of immaturity or an unwillingness to confront tough topics, but evidence that he's the most emotionally mature of the trio. by quite some distance.]

redemption

i am a villain enjoyer, and i think there's nothing wrong with liking characters who remain unambiguously, unrepentantly evil.

what i like rather less is the idea that villains don't have traits, emotions, experiences, and motivations which aren't anything other than similar to the good guys.

and what i like least of all is the idea that there are some people who are so divergent from the good guys that they are unworthy of one of the most sincerely magical human abilities: the ability to redeem oneself.

yes, even draco malfoy, even snape, even voldemort. unless all of us are capable of redemption then none of us are. this is an important lesson to learn.

how these people redeem themselves, how redemption is complex and painful, how they atone, how they cope with the unmooring experience of forgiveness, how they take to their second chances, and how they stumble on the way are the topics of some of the best fics i have ever read, and i will never get free of the chokehold.
