The Awakening
Tumblr media
Meet Orin, a Rock Gnome Druid of the Circle of the Land (Underdark) who was once a hermit, living a solitary life deep beneath the earth. His life was forever changed when he had an encounter with a creature known as the Darkmantle.
Orin was exploring a series of caverns when he stumbled upon the Darkmantle, mistaking it for a stalactite. Suddenly, the creature dropped from the ceiling, engulfing him in darkness as it began to crush him. In a moment of desperation, Orin tapped into his innate druidic abilities and called upon the power of the earth.
The ground shook and the walls trembled as Orin's magic surged forth, creating a fissure in the cavern floor that swallowed the Darkmantle whole. From that moment on, Orin knew that he could never go back to his solitary life. He had been awakened to the power of nature and the importance of protecting it.
Determined to learn more about the Darkmantle and the creatures that dwell in the Underdark, Orin left his hermitage and began to explore the world above. He soon joined a circle of druids who shared his passion for the earth, and he honed his skills in the Circle of the Land (Underdark).
With his knowledge of the Underdark and his connection to the earth, Orin has become a powerful ally in the fight against those who would destroy nature. He remains ever vigilant, knowing that the creatures of the Shadowfell are always watching, and he stands ready to defend the earth against any who would seek to harm it.

Thank you very much for the question. Taken from this ask game
If your OC could choose to be a nonhuman character, what do you think they would choose? If they are a nonhuman character, would they choose to be human or another sort of nonhuman character?
Ok, for this one I'm going to answer it for Thaddeus because he's not had much love lately.
I think Thaddeus, being the gothy, edgy, trying to be bad!boy man that he is would probably choose to be a fallen Aasimar if he had the chance. Fallen Aasimar would give him the chance to be a goth angel dude, with the potential for the power of flight and none of that feather wings and halo nonsense, or the need to be seen as a goody two shoes, lawful stupid hero stereotype he's heard so much about (he believes he's too smart to fall into that trap. No, he has never met Planatar or Deva in his life).

*we find out NPC was the one who raised the Darkmantles we previously fought*
Ty: I think to Mylis, ‘ask him if he has anything else like that.’
Mylis: Like the disk?
Ty: No, like the squid kids.

While sneaking into the hag’s lair, the party was attacked by a darkmantle, which chewed on the bugbear barbarian and narrowly avoided attacking her child, a large pumpkin carried in a baby Bjorn. It was dispatched by the bard and rogue, and the barbarian chose to pick up the body of the darkmantle “like a white boy with a fish he caught” and take it to the hag.
Bugbear barbarian: “Excuse me ma'am, your squid attacked us, and then… it perished.”

I’m going to continue on my Essek and Food mind track a little more. Just because the inherent hilarity of the Nein getting a very normal view of Essek and his eating habits because he’s too shy and anxious early on to mention anything odd or gross or foreign. He’ll try anything once as long as it looks like it won’t actively poison him. And then they know him for a while and he starts to say things. For the longest time, it was just he likes soups and stews and is a bit finicky about eating food that is stale or past date. And then-
Essek brings up how he’s desperately craving Cave Fisher. He’d kill for rice noodles with herbs and steamed Cave Fisher Claw Meat.
Essek will quote, “get over the fact that they found Ice Worm for Verin’s ceremonial dinner, but for me they had to purchase domesticated Purple Worm because the hunters came up empty. The absolute indignity-“
He’s feeling nostalgic for Darkmantle Calamari, it was a festival food and it’s been years.
It’s been too long since he’s had some good snake steak.
And so on and so forth. And it comes so far out of left field for the Nein because Essek is a blue-blood, why has he eaten so many monsters and insects??? He craves them. He starts actively requesting fried crickets to put on his summer salad and what the fuck is even going on?

Elven cuisine Headcanons
High Elves:
Haute Cuisine, but make it 🍁𝓬𝓸𝓽𝓽𝓪𝓰𝓮𝓬𝓸𝓻𝓮🍁
...at least, that's how a lot of humans would describe it, for lack of better words.
Pretty-looking dishes that are served in small proportions. Anyone who is still hungry after a 'normal' ration can repeat: High elf families who invite people of other races for brunch tend to already be used to their guests asking for refills.
Mainly vegetarian: Lots of leaves, fruits, roots, seeds, flowers and even bark from edible trees, as well as fungi. If a plant is edible and can be harvested without risk, it will be in the menu.
That is not to say that high elves don't eat meat, though their idea of what's game and what's not can be very culturally different from another race or even another clan: Some high elves might abstain from eating deer or elk because they are seen as sacred in their clan, while some humans might find the idea of froghemoth terrine "disgusting".
Wood Elves:
Cuisine is a reflection of someone's culture, and with wood elves said culture is one of respect for nature. Veggies tend to be foraged rather than grown in a farm.
"Agriculture" and "wood elf" are words that are very rarely in the same sentence, and their food reflects that. Their traditional bread and other baked goods use wild grain instead of wheat.
When meat is consumed, it is based on whatever animals are necessarily hunted, and when that happens, no part of the animal is wasted: Offal and organ meat is cooked and eaten in a variety of ways, and bones are used for stock. If you are gonna eat an animal, then honor its sacrifice by using it all.
Wood elven dishes are the polar opposite of high elves': Little thought is given to a meal's visual presentation, what's important is to make it hearty and delicious.
Dark Elves:
Drow cuisine is one that was very much shaped by the Underdark and what few things are edible and easily harvested in such a hard place.
Mushrooms and edible fungi in general are prevalent: Mushroom stew, mushroom pie, mushroom bread, even mushroom wine! (That last one is canon!)
Some Underdark monsters are hunted for their meat. The Cave Fisher and the Darkmantle in particular are considered delicacies.
"Spider eater" is a derogatory slur sometimes used against dark elves. In truth, Lolth-sworn dark elves see eating spiders or killing spiders in general as highly blasphemous. It is the surface-born Seldarine drow population the ones to actually partake in the consumption of spider meat, and that's something they only started doing precisely to give Lolth the middle finger and then continued doing because, as it turns out, it is a good protein source that doesn't actually taste bad at all, thank you very much.
Surface drow cuisine is marked by a cultural need to replicate the flavors found in Underdark as best as possible using what's available to them. Expect a lot of spices, algae, shellfish, some bugs and, yes, lots and lots of mushrooms.
