As you can see, the pacing and leveling is actually pretty comparable from C2 to C3. And Marisha’s comment that “shit gets real around episode 30″ is accurate for both C2 (Molly > Caduceus > the rescue) and C3 (Dusk > the Calloways > NMK reveals).

*I did not include C1 in this because a) it was an extension of the home game, and b) they started the campaign at lvl 9.

I have so many thoughts about Kingsley Tealeaf.

I want to know the specifics of how Kingsley became the new Plank King so badly.

We know that the last one got the title after challenging and killing the previous Plank King, but is that always how it goes? Or is killing the last king just the easiest way to do it? And (if the wiki is correct), Kingsley is only the third Plank King. Ever. So, maybe there's no precedent for anything beyond death and battle.

He's certainly a capable individual. He's a good fighter, quick on his feet, clever, cunning. He's got good weapons even before getting Zehir's sword, and he's got a better grasp on what he can and can't/shouldn't do with his blood magic. Certainly better than Molly did. That's the Lucien in him.

But he's also unconventional. Killing the last guy? Probably pretty easy, even if he is a big ole goliath who's definitely out of King's weight class. But if you kill him...well, you can't make him pay for threatening to kill Jester, can you? Nobody gets away with that sort of thing.

So why not find a way to humiliate him instead?

I like stories about people winning in the face of impossible or unlikely odds by doing something unconventional. I like tricksters. Kingsley, for all that he isn't Molly or Lucien, is still both of them. He's still showy, just in a different way. He still snarks and lies, he's trying to walk a different path than either of the lives who came before him.

What would Molly do? What would Lucien do?

Molly, I think, would bullshit his way into being the Plank King. He'd come up with a story or something, spread it so everyone believes it. He takes down the reputation of the last guy before even having to swing a sword. I'm picturing a whisper campaign against the current Plank King, convincing people he's turned against them and their best interests, and using Darktow against him. And when he's gone, all Molly would need to do is just take the empty throne.

Lucien would fight him. I think it would likely be a one on one thing, intense and violent, and while it would eventually end in his victory, it would be hard fought. Could he bullshit his way to the top too? Absolutely. But I don't think he'd want to, here, because why waste the effort when you can just kill the last guy?

So with that in mind...and with the knowledge that the Plank King has banned his family from Darktow, and that he's explicitly threatened Jester's life...what would Kingsley do?

I think it would be a little of column a, a little of column b. Integrate himself into Darktow, learn all he can about how everything works there, and find a weakness to exploit that way. Is there dissatisfaction or dislike that could be magnified? Does the current Plank King have any particular vices or weaknesses? That sort of thing.

And... I'm torn about what would happen next. Part of me thinks that King would win the title, not by fighting, but by gambling with increasingly high odds, until the Plank King bets his position. Would he cheat to win? Rig the game? I'm not sure.

The other part of me thinks there would be a duel. One on one, another hard fought challenge...but it doesn't end with King killing the Plank King. He defeats him, forces him to yield, humiliates and undermines his authority in front of the Revelry, and takes the crown without killing.

Both feel like they'd be possible. I'm not sure what one feels more like Kingsley. I'm not sure he would either, though. He wants to be his own man, and he is! But habits ingrained from past lives die hard, and we know that he's starting to remember some things. I've always been of the mindset that the reason he didn't remember anything after the Greater Restoration was because taking in two lives worth of memories, two lives that ended violently and painfully, would be too much. The only way for Molly and Lucien to get one more chance is to do it together (I like to think of it as being like a Steven Universe fusion, specifically Garnet), and they're not gone, but they're part of a bigger whole, a new person. And the bigger whole, Kingsley, doesn't want to make the same mistakes (I really liked the metaphor of looking at his past lives like parents. It's just distant enough to let him stand on his own without denying the connection he has to who he was).

So I've been trying to think about it. How would Kingsley become the Plank King. How would he do it solely as himself, distinct from how Lucien or Molly would do it, or if he would lean into one side more than another there.

Either way, the fact that the first thing he does is unban his friends, and look forward to Jester's endless messages...it's a good sign.

I've got a lot of thoughts about Kingsley. I really love him as a character and as a concept...and I love Molly and Lucien too, and look at this person they are together! This person who is both of them and either of them, who is distinct but echoes his past even as he works to learn from it! Who probably remembers more than he admits, but who is trying to find themself and not let the secrets locked in the doors of his mind dictate what he does with his life, who he is. I really want to write about those first six months as he becomes his own person, as he sails with people who loved who he was, with the people who killed him and helped bring him into the world. I wanna know how he became the Plank King. I want to see his relationship with the Nein evolve and change (because the Nein all changed too, none of them were the same people that Molly met). I want more of his friendship with Caduceus, I want to know if he and Essek are friends too. I want to know if Yasha is still special to him (I think she is, because he remembered feelings about her first, and I think there was more to complimenting her hair then just liking how it was cut). I want to know why he's wearing clothes that cover everything, the scars and the tattoos, if he's got makeup or something to hide them on his cheeks. Does he struggle with looking at himself in the mirror, or with these scars he half remembers and half feels but aren't his? Will he someday feel comfortable with his body and be self assured that no matter what he remembers, he is himself first and foremost? Will we ever get him in a billowy deep v necked pirate shirt? He was talking about adding things to his coat, is he embroidering it like Molly did his?

UGH. I know this whole post got waaaayy off track from where it started. I just want more of him, of him with the Nein, of him as the king of pirates... I want to write more. I want to read more!

The man instinctively flirted with Caleb, I need to know more about that too. Need to read more there, there's so little.

Hi again, it's-a me. I genuinely hope you don't feel too much pressure to just chunk out drabbles and fics like a machine, yaknoe? Only as long as you're still enjoying yourself.

So no pressure, just had a thought about #28 with platonic soulmates Caleb and Nott/Veth?

28. Reassurance in the form of food/movies/games, forcing them to take a second away and relax with you. lol, i very much appreciate your concern. i do wanna make sure i'm answering asks as promptly as i can, but don't worry, i don't write when i can't. :)

Veth bangs on the door to the cottage, glaring at the cheerful if slightly overgrown green beans below the front windows. "CALEB!" She bangs harder, and she can feel her fist getting sore. "Open the FUCKING door!"

She keeps up her violent knocking, even when one of Caleb's neighbors peeks her head out her own front door, clearly concerned. "Mind your business!" Veth snaps, and the head disappears, wide-eyed and affronted. The door in front of Veth remains obstinately closed.

With a frustrated sigh, she roots around in the pocket of her dress until she can extract a thin coil of copper wire. She twists it angrily between her short fingers, then points in the direction of the house. "You will open this door and you will let me in or so help me I will light these fucking beans on fire!" She pauses. "Reply to this message, now!"

She seethes, staring at the wood of the door, gripping the wire for dear life, until finally, finally, it creaks open, and a bloodshot, baggy eye appears in the crack. "Veth." Caleb's voice sounds like he's been gargling glass. "You are not in Nicodranas."

"Cleverest wizard in a generation," Veth snarks, shoving her foot in the door to prevent him from closing it. "We thought you were dead. You're lucky it's just me and not a SWAT team from the Cobalt Soul."

"No, I am alive." The door swings open just an inch more, and what Veth can see of Caleb is bedraggled, like a cat dunked in tub and hung to dry on the line. Veth's seen enough of his sleep deprivation to know it's been a minimum of three days since he's gotten any shut-eye—and if she had to guess, it's been that long since he's eaten, too.

"Move." Without waiting for him to do so, she shoves her way inside, and fuck, this cottage smells like ass. Every single horizontal surface is covered with parchment and leather-bound tomes, and there are cats running around, not ones from his arcane tower, but strays.

"You live like this?" Veth says, stunned by the piles of dirty clothes and the utter lack of natural light.

Caleb rubs the back of his head, clearly embarrassed. "No. Well—ja, okay, sometimes, but only when I am working."

"When are you not working?"

Caleb ignores the question, collecting some papers together into something resembling a pile so that there is a space on his little sofa for Veth to sit. "I appreciate your visit and your concern, Veth, but I am fine. I apologize for ignoring Jester's messages—"

"Oh forget a Cobalt task force, Jester wanted to sic all of Darktow on you."

"Yes, well, it is unnecessary. I was deep in..." He gestures around him broadly. "...well, this."

Veth pokes at a piece of paper, upon which she sees some arcane writing that is far beyond her meager talents. "What is this?" She claps her hands together. "You know what? No. Never mind. I don't care and it doesn't matter." She spins around and stalks into the kitchen. "I am making you food, and you are going to eat it even though Yeza is the cook in the family, and then you are going to sleep, and I swear to the gods if you wake up before this time tomorrow, I'm drugging you."

"Veth..."

She whips around to glare daggers at him. "Food. Sleep. That is the end of the conversation."

Caleb smiles sheepishly and settles on the spot he'd cleared on the couch, watching Veth over the back of it as she grumbles through cleaning enough of the kitchen off so she can start cooking. She's annoyed to be sure, but someone's gotta look after the idiot, and if she has to threaten Yussa Errenis into teleporting her all the way to Rexxentrum to do it, well, a small price to pay to make sure her boy doesn't work himself to death.

oh, dude, Kingsley lives forever. IMO, he's one of the last of the nein to die. he's the first plank king to retire and does it because he got bored with having his ass parked in darktow as an empty nester in his sixties. He takes off with his spouse on a houseboat and sees even more of the world before settling back down in Port Damali or Stilben or someplace similar. He's the gristliest, coolest looking old coot you've ever seen, and he's chasing his great-grandkids down the weather deck of a ship till the very end. He dies at like 180 or something amazing like that. There's two memorial stones for him: one in Darktow, and one alongside the rest of the Nein and his spouse in the Grove.

Writing Prompt!

Molly whose been off at sea comes to Rexxentrum at the end of Ickyzs trial to find Caleb's completely neglected himself.

Molly takes care of him.

Molly enjoyed his time on the ocean, a chance to blend the three personas that he had sprouted over his life into something less destructive. So many sharp edges that took time to even out, settle into something that didn’t make his lip curl and his head hurt. Each part was important, as much as he wanted to forget Lucien, he was the past he never admitted to missing. Kingsley, though short-lived, was just as important, a reminder of the love surrounding him. If Lucien was his darkness, Kingsley was his light and Mollymauk…Mollymauk just felt right, the centre point on the balance beam that held them all together. 

Though, for his reign he chose Kingsley as his face, perfect new Kingsley that he could paint a persona on that suited being the King of Darktow. The pirate nature freeing after what they’d all been through, of course the Mighty Nein were still banned from his kingdom, kept things interesting when they attempted to visit and gave his subjects something to work on. Kept them from getting uppity.

Of course, there was no fun and games in the letter that Beau had sent via a stone faced little monk of the Soul.

She couldn’t come herself, the trail taking up much of her time. So much in fact that she’d barely been able to tend to her Empire brother. Even Yasha had found it difficult to pull Caleb from his darkness that had settled around him like an impenetrable hedge maze. The wizard was far too good at distracting and manipulating the women straight out the door before they realised what had happened. 

So the King had left his kingdom, expecting a little trouble upon his return, but that was fun for a future date. Perhaps he could convince his little firebug wizard to join him.

That’s if Caleb didn’t die in the mess that had become his home.

“Mister Caleb, how do you find anything in this?” Molly questioned, surveying the endless mess of tomes and papers. Chalk dust hung in the sunbeams, coating everything in a fine powder.

“I never forget Mister Mollymauk,” Caleb smirked, but there was something bitter and dark about the once playful comment.

Molly frowned, he wished Beau had sent for him sooner. Clearly things were more dire than he’d anticipated.

“How goes the trail?” He prompted as he tried to brush papers away to make space on, what he presumed was a chair, not that he could find one under the scrolls.

“Witness testimonies have been taken,” Caleb intoned blankly, and Molly paused in search.

Fucking damn it, Beauregard.

“I thought we were all meant to be there when you gave your testimony,” Molly reminded him, but Caleb looked away guiltily.

“I didn’t wish it, not even Beau was allowed in the room.”

Mollymauk snapped upright, levelling a dangerous glare at his friend. “So you were alone with him!”

“There were other’s of the Colbolt Soul and -“ Caleb attempted to defend himself, but Molly was already striding through the towers of scribbled work, advancing on Caleb and grasping the wizard by his arms before he could retreat. 

“They don’t count, Caleb, they’re not your family. They’ve not bled beside you, or fought with you!”

“I didn’t…I didn’t want you all to hear it, there was no hiding anything,” Caleb admitted and Molly tucked a finger under Caleb’s chin, tilting Caleb’s face up to look him in the eye.

“We already know, you should have had support,” he said kindly.

“I am fine, schatz,” Caleb ducked his head again.

Molly waved his arms pointedly around the room, “Evidently not!”

It wasn’t just the room, Caleb’s beard was unkept, his cheekbones more defined, and his clothes hung a little looser than Molly recalled. Nothing as bad as when they first met all that time ago, but it was still worrying how far he’d fallen in such a short time.

“Mollymauk-“

“I thought you’d learned better habits from us?” Molly inquired.

Caleb sighed, slumping in defeat, “It has been more difficult than I expected.”

“Well…that’s progress at least,” Molly smiled softly as he bumped his forehead against Caleb’s, glad that at least Caleb was no longer fighting him on the subject. The wizard leant heavily against him, seeking out the comfort like a starving man.

“I am sorry,” Caleb said wetly.

“You needn’t be, you old fool, just reach out for us,” Molly sighed as he clutched Caleb close. The thinness he found under Caleb’s clothes made him tighten his grip on his hips.

“Mollymauk?”

“Hm?”

“Will you stay a while, I need you,” Caleb asked quietly.

Molly grinned, “Of course, but you’ll owe me.”

“And what is the payment you want?” Caleb chuckled, perhaps hoping for something more carnal than what Mollymauk intended. There’d be time for that later of course, but Molly was more concerned with getting Caleb away from everything for a time. Clear the cobwebs of his mind as it was.

“Might need your assistance reclaiming my throne. My second was a little too happy to see me go.”

Caleb laughed, loud and sharp but joyful, “I’ll be happy to help.”

favorite episode: oh no these are going to be HARD aren't they. gosh. I haven't rewatched the campaign because I do not have unlimited time because caleb destroyed the t-dock. HOWEVER:

episode 97 of course slaps; we have nott->veth with sam in a leprechaun costume, we have "you were not born with venom in your veins," which electrified me the first time I heard it, and we also have Cad casting truesight on Beau and then immediately fucking off with no explanation, which is still hilarious to me

episode 93 has jester and the hag! angst galore and then one of the most breathtaking moments of gameplay of all time, what more could someone ask?

I have always had a soft spot for the poetry of the pirate arc--the fact that it started because of an episode of unbelievably horrible rolls and concluded when they escaped darktow with an episode of dazzlingly good ones. so I guess that's 35 and 43?

and I think the disastrous hospital heist episode was the episode that truly hooked me, so honorary mention for episode 12.

and then of course: 140. I watch the last hour of 140 sometimes to feel emotions. THE game of all time.

favorite polymorph: jester into a moth with an intelligence of 1 and spending an hour fluttering around and eating curtains. zero question.

✨Favorite spell - Message and polymorph were always good for a fun moment; favorote spell was probably the Dome/Widogast Tower, it was such a beautiful and creative moment for the party.

(Also, returning Veth to her halfling form deserves a shout out)

🌍 Favorite location - I loved the pirate arc and Darktow seemed SO COOL; I hope they get to go back in the one shot. The Ukatoa underground grotto and temple were also fantastic.

What's the state of extradition like on the continent of Wildemount? Inquiring minds would like to know.

It seems that, if the Nein manage to survive this, Essek probably cannot stick around the outpost or the whole place is in danger. He can't go back to the Dynasty. At that point, his option is going awol, which is, uh, not something the Dynasty is likely to take kindly to, to put it mildly.

After this arc, we have two options: either we go straight to the Assembly conflict, or we lay low for a while and handle Fjord's business with Vandran. The latter seems like a better way to regroup after a very prolonged and difficult fight, and it's an easier loose end to tie up.

So say they go looking for Vandran, a man who used to know the Coast very well, had some influence, and definitely owes Fjord at least one favor. Fjord knows he used to have a warehouse in Port Damali—maybe that'd be a good idea as a hideout if they can get their hands on it.

Vandran is listening to this problem, has had to reinvent himself several times, and asks, "Well why deal with governments at all? Just hide your traitor friend in Darktow."

(Cue Fjord laughter.)

The Darktow situation is explained, and they think that's the end of it. But Vandran seems the type to be very decisive and also make some wild choices, so he has another solution.

"The Plank King wouldn't be difficult to beat."

Fjord, exasperated: "I don't want to be the Plank King."

Vandran points to Essek. "I mean, it doesn't seem like he's got a lot else going on."

(Cue Essek, "...Excuse me?")

Unfortunately for Essek, the idea of him becoming the Plank King makes a lot of sense.

First, it's a battle to the death to get the spot, and while he absolutely doesn't have the years of experience fighting that the Plank King has, he does have range, and I imagine he's a little quicker than the Plank King, who seems to be getting up there in years and has not really had need to properly fight in a while. (Besides, Essek really should be dead already, so what is there to lose?)

Second, the position of Plank King seems to entail: have general pragmatism, be smart enough to make sure the books are balanced, and keep the island protected. Essek covers all of that.* Plus, as Essek tends to be diplomatic and nonjudgmental, he'd probably be fairly popular as a ruler on Darktow—and he'll live for another 600 years, provided he doesn't royally piss off an island of pirates, which is good for stability. And most pirates do not want the job, because they do not want to be tied down—and as aforementioned, what else does Essek have going on? Plus, it doesn't seem like there are that many disputes to manage, and I'm sure most of the accounting is delegated, so all there is left to do is magic experimentation, so it's really a win-win.

Third, Darktow is territory that has no allegiance to any nation, and as such it's a bit harder for the Dynasty or the Empire to wheedle a sovereign into handing him over—not least because here, he is the sovereign. (Do we think the Plank King has diplomatic immunity?) Not to mention that the island is a stronghold—the Concord, with probably the largest naval presence on the continent, has not managed to infiltrate it.

And lastly, my favorite reason Essek would be a great pick for Plank King: according to the Wildemount guide, the pirates have started constructing arcane defense, including one designed to combat Clovis Concord skyships. If arcane defenses and weaponry is what Darktow is working to build, then who better to lead that effort?

Also, it means the Nein (and by extension, the Gentleman, hilariously) would conveniently no longer be exiled from Darktow, and it'd be really fucking funny.

In conclusion, Essek for Plank King 2k21.

*You even keep whatever weird connection the Plank King has to the Cobalt Soul! Matthew, what the fuck is that about. Please explain.
