didn't know who you were but your skin was so tumblr sexyman coded I couldn't resist voting
then I saw a post about you not having youtube or twitch, went "wait what" and went for the deep dive into darkwoods smp tag
love you and your silly friends! congrats on 33% <3
answering this one a bit late but THANK YOU!!! <3 im glad our silly little server and silly little campaign has entertained people so much, everyone has really been so wonderful and supportive and i can’t thank you all enough.
honestly i think saint’s skin was a big help getting as far as i did hdhskdgksdg. so many people in the tags mentioned going off looks alone. i got lucky by having the cool one with the suspenders and all as the one chosen to represent me on the actual poll bc some of my other skins are not nearly as sexyman-coded.

Realms
small descriptions of all the notable realms in my AU!!
-
Anchordeep - Realm of Kallamar
Incredibly polluted, there's a constant rotting miasma lacing the air. The few shorelines and islands are covered in sand lice, and foamy algal blooms from where the water meets the land. The air here is salty enough to irritate the skin.
The ocean itself feels almost viscous at the surface, similar to mucous. It's absolutely festering with diseases and parasites of all kinds. Trash floats all throughout the realm, some of which is used by Anchordeeps inhabitants for weapons and other tools.
-
Anura - Realm of Heket
A humid, damp swamp with fog much too thick to see clearly through. Birch, willow, and mangrove trees thrive here; all well as mushrooms of all sorts.
The few bits of land are so soggy, they almost feel as if they'd give under too much weight. The entire place is pocked with puddles and other sources of still water, which are absolutely infested with biting gnats and mosquitos.
Many things look edible here, but absolutely none are, and attempting to consume anything from this realm would likely kill you.
-
Aves - Realm of the late Cardinal, Verrier
An elevated alpine plateau. Dry and arid, with various species of mountain cacti scattering the ground. Dust & Snowstorms are incredibly common, though it’s basically impossible to tell which will be next.
Low in resources and life ever since Verrier disappeared with the Old Gods. Only beasts roam the mountains, now.
Used to be rich in culture and free of the Old Faith, up until Verriers crowning. Then it became just as dependent on it as any other realm. Those that refused to follow Verrier fled in search of other unaligned lands.
-
Darkwood - Realm of Leshy
The land in which Darkwood now resides once belonged to an Old God. Though, its been taken over by Leshy and their unpredictable magic.
Nowadays the forest is wild enough that Leshy, nor their loyal Acolytes can control it and its rampant spread. Vegetation is so thick that trees often have to intertwine in order to grow; and poison oak blankets the ground.
It's practically impossible to navigate if you aren't familiar with its constantly shifting pathways; even those under Leshys blessing for decades have been lost trying to find their way through.
-
Silk Cradle - Realm of Shamura
Twisting caverns that are constantly caving in and being rebuilt make up the majority of Silk Cradle. It's uncomfortably cold, damp, and stagnant, with webs and nests stuffed away in every corner.
While the environment isn't hostile by default, the creatures that call this place home absolutely are.
Near the center, it's constantly bustling with rowdy duels and debates of insects of all kinds. A spiraling tower making up Shamuras temple is found in the center, carefully crafted compared to everything else in the area, and full of vast libraries containing all the knowledge of the Old Faith. And though the realm is barely lit by anything but a few candles stuck on the granite-laced walls, that doesn't seem to be an issue for its inhabitants.

y'know i really enjoyed Darkwood and i should go back and try to finish the game but i spent wayyy too long in my first run playing it as a survival game when it was really meant more as a story. i think i had been alive for over a month in-game time when i went into the swamp area and was like "THERE'S MORE???" and quit playing

A thought: Is special Follower dialogue Bishop-Lore hiding in plain sight? I actually think. The Darkwood interactions point to Narinder, and not Leshy. I will not be taking questions.
Lost Companion Quests
"My friend and I were traveling together through Anura and lost each other." "Before you brought me into your Cult my sister and I were separated when travelling through Anchordeep." "My best friend is lost in Silk Cradle, can you go save them?" "My brother and I were traveling together through Darkwood and were separated." As a follow-up to that last one, in the Doctrines, if you agree that all is fair in love and war, then it's revealed that that follower feels overshadowed by their brother and demands to be put in the fight pit with him. And wins.
If I were to take these as one-to-one comparisons...
Heket's not from Anura, Kallamar's not from Anchordeep, and Narinder's not from Darkwood. Those first two track, so I'll assume it tracks for Narinder too. The frogs in Anura seem almost like an invasive species. Just hundreds upon hundreds of frog spawn everywhere, and no other creatures. For a swamp it's very. Dry. And Kallamar is the only sentient squid for miles.
Kallamar had a sister, and Narinder had a brother. Narinder had a brother he had growing resentment for. "Lost" vs "Separated" implies intention. So someone (or something...) separated Kallamar and Narinder from their family members, while it was just bad luck that Heket lost track of her friend. Anura is characterized as being particularly dangerous.
Shamura had a fwiend owo a best fwiend. Probs failed to save them. Dead. Traumatic.
New Follower Recruitment
"Some creatures are here seeking shelter with our Cult, but they are sick!" "Sceptics and heretics have made their way to our Cult, cursing our way of life... but they want to join!" "There are some folks who are starving and have no place to call home, we must let them join our Cult!" "Some elders have been cast from their Cult and now seek a place to enjoy their final years."
The first and third interactions are easy to ascribe to Kallamar and Heket respectively. These two ended up on the Old Faith's (read: Shamura's) doorstep out of desperation. It would make sense if Shamura, the knowledge god, didn't actually believe in any Old Faith nonsense. But they weren't going to NOT become a god. As for the last one... elders wear white. Narinder wears white. Narinder = old man confirmed.

The Green Dream.. it feels like so long ago I entered into that verdance. Who was he back then?? I remember traces.
It was a gentle meadow. A blissful dream..Then as I ventured deeper, it turned darkwood trapwald. A mess of anxiety and gripping brambles.
It’s been so long since it has ever been scary. The darkwood now conquered.
But now I feel it become a festering mire of decay. All my life become stasis swamp. All I can barely convey in this blunted state.
This vice continues to bolster and rob me of time and passion, within its soothing embrace. Ever I remain torn and broken over the path forward.

So I finally made it to the Swamp in Darkwood, and came across one of the Ruins locations. Of course the first one I find has the Banshee living in it with her adopted Mad Man.
The secret to the mushroom and meat stew is the freshness of the glowing and poisonous mushrooms, of course! Yummy yummy.
Would YOU stay for dinner? Just don't stare at the Banshee.

I wanted to make a Darkwood OC after finishing the game a first time so.....meet the Patroller.
Infos dump and rough writing under cut:
Trivia about him: - one of the Outsiders though he disappeared before the Protagonist even came to the Darkwood so they do not recognize each other - he was separated from his squad when he fell into one of the woods’ many holes, he clawed his way out when the roots started to grow around and inside him. he could not find his squad afterwards no matter how long he searched. - says that he can't pronounce his own name anymore bc the roots dug it out of his throat, but he remembers it - his lantern never goes out and small insects seem to flock to it - lives in an old, run-down watchtower - during dialogue, has the tendency to look or turn away from the Protagonist as if he’s heard someone else talk to him - the villagers hate him because he’s an outsider and won’t let him set foot in the Village, but accept his help regardless if one needs to be escorted home. - his theme song is Lights Out by Cities Last Broadcast
As a NPC: - the Patroller would be the person who may find the player if they're outside their base at night and guide them home safely - he’s obsessed with digging holes because he claims that he can hear his squadmate’s voices coming from underground, trapped. His questline would be to bring him shovels so he can dig deep enough to get to them - when his questline is completed he’ll disappear from his hideout. if the Protagonist goes to look for him, he may be found dead in the tunnel he dug, entangled in roots alongside the remains of his squad, and the Protagonist gets his lantern - if his questline is not completed by the time the Protagonist is about to move to the Swamp, he may be asked to come along but he’ll refuse and start crying, saying he cannot leave without his squad.
First rough concept, need to redo a full body ref with his current appearance
Tumblr media
attempt made at game-compliant meeting:
‘I look up from the ground to see the silhouette of a tall man standing over me, a lit lantern hanging in his fist. Its light bounces on the twisted head of the shovel in his other hand.
"Eryk?"
The lantern shifts, it no longer blinds me, and I can now make out the branches growing from beneath the man's cowl. His single eye is on me, wide and unblinking.
"Oh. I- I thought you were someone else."
His voice is a rough thing, creaking like wooden floors.
"You're lost, it's not good. The roots will take you away, they want to take everyone, you know. I heard them say it."
The tall man reaches back to hang the shovel to his belt, then he crouches down to offers me his hand. Soil clings to his bandaged limb, and the smell of damp, rotting bark fills my nostrils.
"I'll lead you home."
• Accept his help • Get up by yourself ’
