In the Star Trek episode, "Darmok" the Enterprise encounters the Tamarian people, who speak entirely in allusions to their own mythology. It's a wonderful episode, which raises the question, "How are the Tamarians learning their own stories in order to be able to speak solely in memes?"

Here's my thought. The spoken Tamarian language is entirely in memes. The written language is more complex. "Hang on," I hear you say, "If the written language is complex enough to tell a story why don't they speak it as well?" To which I say, "You, a screaming woman insisting a written language must be pronounceable, me, a cat eating a salad using this very meme as an example."
