Miss Universe Philippines Davao Oriental 2023 National Costume: The Tree of Life
For the coconut farmers of Davao Oriental. The coconut industry is one of Davao Oriental’s biggest livelihoods, with almost 300,000 coconut farmers. It is called the tree of life because almost every single part can be used to sustain human life. Back in 2012, typhoon Pablo damaged over 6 million coconut trees in Davao Oriental. With this costume, we honor how Davao Oriental has revived the coconut industry, and advocate for the livelihood and wellbeing of coconut farmers

Parallel Exchange Universe: CEBU and DAVAO
Here, Cebu and Davao are a thing.
And compared to original Cebu (Cecilia), this Cebu (Casey) isn’t really a “tsundere” here and she isn’t as expressive as our original Cebu is. She’s just very work-oriented or is kind of like an adrenaline junkie. She and Davao has bonded ever since.

[Gloria Capitan] may be the first environmental defender killed under Duterte, but killings had already been recorded even in the past two decades. Rappler data show that before Gloria, 115 had already been killed from April 2001 to April 2016.
Over the past two decades, most of these killings happened in the regions of Davao, Western Visayas, and Mimaropa, according to Rappler data and records from the Kalikasan People’s Network for the Environment (Kalikasan PNE). The killings started in 2001 and continued until 2022.
As of 2022, a total of 334 environmental defenders have been killed. For nine consecutive years since 2012, according to international organization Global Witness, the Philippines has been the deadliest spot in Asia for environmental defenders.
Of the 334 killings involving environmental defenders, 61 were traced to the Davao Region, while 40 happened in Western Visayas. Of all the recorded killings, more than a third came from the following five provinces: Davao de Oro, Negros Occidental, Bukidnon, Negros Oriental, and Palawan.
Many of the environmental defenders who were killed protested against the operation of businesses that pollute or destroy the environment in their communities, while some pushed for the protection of landscapes such as forests.
There were also defenders who served in the government, like forest rangers and municipal and community environmental officers, who were killed while on duty. But most of them were just trying to protect their homes.

IN-GAME BIOGRAPHY
Tumblr media
Jason "Askal" Timog was born and raised in the rural mountains of Davao Oriental, Philippines. At 18 years old he enlisted in the army, motivated by the rampant terrorist attacks on his country. He would later join the Philippine Scout Rangers, where he was nicknamed "askal" meaning "feral dog", from a habit of baring teeth during vigorous trainings. One of his deployments was a joint operation between MARSOC and the Scout Rangers, tasked to take down a chain of Al-Qatala strongholds in Southern Philippines. Among the MARSOC operators was Phillip Graves. In 2019, Askal and several other Rangers were involved in a mutiny. Although it was a failure, the rebels took multiple innocent lives before fleeing the area. Askal barely escaped trial thanks to the help of his sister, who was exiled by their family for being transgender. She took him to Canada, but it was a matter of time before he's recognized. Commander Graves approached Askal at a perfect time, offering security in exchange for his expertise. He proved to be a valuable soldier for Shadow Company. In 2021, Graves formed "Whiskey Company" a team of operators specializing in amphibious and jungle warfare, led by Askal who was rather enthusiastic about it as he was teamed up with his friends. Early 2023, Whiskey was dispatched to track down Konni strongholds across Europe and gather intel of Makarov’s inner circle. The intel would later aid TF-141 and Shadow Company on their relentless search for Commander Makarov.

The openness of Filipino Christians to struggle for national liberation, as shown by the Filipino Catholic clergy who joined the revolution against Spanish colonialism, and even to Marxism . . . had led US imperialism to continue commissioning the CIA to persist in utilizing the Christian religion to hide the exploitation and oppression of US imperialism in the Philippines. For instance, the CIA initiated the entry of Christian “socialism,” which became the ideological foundation of the Christian Social Movement (CSM) headed by Manglapus and Manahan among pro-US imperialist politicians to counter Filipino nationalist politicians, led by the late Senator Claro M. Recto. Senator C. M. Recto was a staunch anti-US imperialist critic and was believed to have been a victim of the CIA, as he died mysteriously of heart attack, though he had no known heart ailment, in Rome, Italy after an appointment with two Caucasians in business suits in 1958. During the 1960s to the 1970s, the CIA established the Campus Crusaders for Christ (CCC) in various universities and colleges throughout the Philippines; the New Tribes Mission (NTM) stations and the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) centers were formed by the CIA in the mountainous areas of the national minorities throughout the Philippines. And since the 1980s up to the present period, all sorts of CIA-backed charismatic congregations, the Dating Daan of Eli Soriano, the Sonship Kingdom of Pastor Apollo Quiboloy (a megalomaniac and self-appointed Son of God in Davao and a friend of tyrant Duterte; has expropriated Lumad lands; owns Son Shine Radio with 16 transmitters stationed strategically throughout the country, fully supports tyrant Duterte’s Build, Build, Build projects; and actively participates in the surrender campaign of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict or NTF-ELCAC), “praise the Lord” groups, “Christ to the Orient” and “free believers” have proliferated. And usually, the use of the Bible and Christianity for the CIA-backed evangelists is to attack the mainline Christian Churches that adhere to human rights in Philippine society.

Fearless Forecast Time
It’s pageant time again for my blog. The Miss Universe Philippines 2023 preliminaries just concluded today and I can now properly make a prediction on who I think deserves to win the coveted crown.
So... I'm just gonna make this real quick.
If I’m to place my bet on who would be the next Miss Universe Philippines, I’d place it on these five:
Tumblr media
Cebu Province • Cavite • Bohol • Pampanga • Makati
However, anyone from this following group can sneak up there, depending on what happens on finals night:
Tumblr media
Pasig • Baguio • Bulacan • Davao Oriental • Sorsogon
Also, I wouldn’t mind seeing in the finals the Taguig, Negros Oriental, Eastern Samar, Capiz, and Parañaque.
My last and ultimate wish is that—although I personally think they may have slimmer chances than anyone mentioned above—for Zambales, Agusan del Norte, and Benguet (especially BENGUET) to get a miracle and somehow make it through.

The Idle Power Giant: The Never-ending Controversy Over the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant
By: Rica Agustin
Tumblr media
Since the time of the late former president Ferdinand Marcos Sr., the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant has been the subject of much controversy.  When the son of the late president Ferdinand Marcos Jr. was elected president of the republic of the Philippines, the BNPP controversy has flared up once more.
The 620-megawatt BNPP was built in 1976 in response to the energy crisis of the 1970s, four years after Marcos declared martial law. The purpose of this was to create a new power plant that would feed into the Luzon grid and reduce the country's reliance on foreign oil. Upon its initial launch, the BNPP was hailed as Southeast Asia's first nuclear power plant. Westinghouse Electric Co.'s "vague, undetailed bid for two nuclear plants" in 1974 estimated a cost of US$500 million, but by the time construction was completed in 1984, the price had risen to US$2.3 billion.
The BNPP faced criticism before, during, and after its construction. Criminal charges were brought against Westinghouse because of the BNPP's many problems, including President Marcos's connections to the company, a disagreement between General Electric and Westinghouse, and problems with protocol during and after construction. Dumaine, writing two years after the plant was finished, described the entire controversy in detail. The Philippines filed charges of bribery and overcharging against Westinghouse and Burns and Roe after the fall of Marcos in 1986. Allegedly, Marcos and his inner circle took millions in kickbacks from a contract with Westinghouse and Burns and Roe that was arranged by Marcos's friend and business associate Herminio Disini. After the Marcoses fled Malacañang in the midst of the "people power" revolution in February 1986, documents revealing their ill-gotten wealth were discovered. Westinghouse Electric Co. is accused of giving Disini millions in kickbacks.
The BNPP was nearly finished and ready for commercial operations in 1986 when the Marcos administration was toppled by the historic EDSA People Power Revolution, which ultimately led to the election of Corazon "Cory" Aquino, the widow of the late opposition senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino, as president. At about the same time, the No. 4 reactor at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine went out of control during a test and exploded, destroying the reactor building and discharging large amounts of radiation into the atmosphere. This was widely regarded as the worst nuclear disaster in terms of both cost and casualties. Bataan locals, along with environmental and cause-oriented groups, strongly opposed the project's operation after the meltdown for safety reasons, and the Aquino administration ultimately decided not to operate the nuclear power plant that had become controversial.
So far, $2.1 billion has been spent on a nuclear plant that will never be used, and the interest on the loans is costing an additional $350,000 per day. It is estimated that the idle plant will cost $320 million in 1993. In 2020, almost 32 years after the BNPP was finished, the Philippines finally paid off all its loans and interest. After spending P43.5 billion on principal amortization and P21.2 billion on interest, the government has spent a grand total of P64.7 billion on the nuclear power plant that has never produced even one watt of electricity.
The debt of the Philippines was paid for by Filipinos even though it has never been used. Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., who was running for president, and Davao Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, who was running as his running mate, made promises during the recent campaign season to speed up the adoption of nuclear power if they were elected, which would presumably entail reevaluating the BNPP. The BNPP has been the subject of numerous unsuccessful attempts by foreign investors to bring it back to life. Again, the new controversy has been brought up, and some Filipinos are concerned about the money that will be wasted if the power plant can't be revived.

  “Dagmay
Community: Mandaya Origin: Eastern Mindanao
The Mandaya, which can be found in the provinces of Davao Oriental, Davao del Norte, Compostella Valley, Surigao del Sur, and Agusan del Sur, have a strong weaving tradition as seen in their coarsely textured dagmay, hand-woven using a special kind of back-strap loom, made from abaca fibres, and following intricate designs revolving around man and nature, especially the crocodile.
They use a mud dyeing technique. Used to obtain black, the technique is based on the reaction between the tannins applied to the yarn before treatment, and the iron found on the mud. The bark of the tree, which contains tannins, is pounded to a pulp and boiled together with the abaca yarn. The mud is then added to the mixture. The yarn is steeped for one to several hours for the best results.
Dagmay designs usually tell the story about the weaver and her community, as well as the spirits that live on Earth. The dagmay is usually used for women’s skirts, but it is also used as blankets or wraps for the dead.” ~Tatler Asia (https://www.tatlerasia.com/culture/arts/weaving-the-threads-of-filipino-heritage)
