Forrest Gump/Umbrella Academy
Forrest Gump and Bubba become friends with Klaus Hargreeves and Dave Katz during the Vietnam War.
- If the deaths of canon (Bubba & Dave) are kept in the story, Forrest & Klaus become closer for it, grieving together.
- Forrest reunites with Klaus in the future (maybe in the Veteran’s place) and doesn’t question him still being young even if he makes a statement about it.
- Forrest helps stop the apocalypse by bonding with and comforting Vanya! 🥰
- I kind of want to see Forrest beat up “Leonard” like he does to Jenny’s abusers

Fic Prompt: Free Day Thursday
So some years ago, when My Hero Academia: The Two Heroes had just come out, my sister and I would joke around imagining the chaos Dave probably got Toshinori into during college. Then we were like "Y'know what, there's literally a Kal-el agency in canon, and the first volume has a Wolverine and Spiderman cameo. We can add some more Marvel characters. As a treat."
So the school became The Rogers Institute for Technology and Defense, built by Howard Stark in honor of Steve, Peggy, and the Howling Commandos. Graduates include All Might, Maria Rambeau/Photon, Captain Marvel, Dave Shield, and Rhodey during a transfer semester. Everything after that was pretty much Shenanigans. Like these:
Carol and Dave came careening around the corner of the walkway between the Vision Center (where all the non heroics classes were held) and the Buchanan building (where the heroics classes were held). They hopped over the low line of bushes dividing the sidewalks and made for the tall figure ambling peacefully along, blissfully unaware of impending disaster.
The pair caught Toshinori on his way from "Politics of Heroism" to "Physics and Force I" and grabbed his arms, nearly unbalancing him, in Carol’s case. For the space of a heartbeat, Toshinori tensed, fighting to keep a grip on his textbook. He couldn’t afford to ruin another one!
"Toshi!"
"Toshi run!"
He stared at his two friends and wondered what on Earth could make Carol Danvers run. This boded ill. "What did you do?!" he demanded.
"He poked the bear!" Carol hissed with wide eyes, digging her fingers into his arm.
Toshinori paled. "Not Professor Haddock! Dave!"
"I'd do it again!" Dave declared rebelliously. He drew himself up to his full height -- which put him at just about eye level with Toshinori’s pecs. "His methods are outdated and he should feel bad!"
"HE'S COMING!" Carol grabbed Dave's arm and started running as an actual bear in a lab coat and spectacles came marching out of the Vision Center in high dudgeon. Toshinori winced and eventually decided discretion was the better part of valor.
“H-Haddock-sensei!” he offered a short bow, even though he had long since been made aware that you didn’t greet your teachers like that here. Sometimes he played up the “confused exchange student” act so that people would underestimate him. It was getting harder to pull off, though, thanks to how much time he spent with Carol and Dave and the other students in the Heroics course. “The essay questions on innovation entropy in a society of quirks are due in class today, are they not?”
The infamous professor of the “Politics of Invention” course bared one fang in a silent snarl before controlling his temper. “What? No! It’s due tonight, through the course website! We’ve been over this before, Yagi.”
Toshinori thought of his handwritten essay, and his problems with finding sturdy keyboards, and blanched. “Ah...I...ah...I see. Please excuse me.”
A glance over his shoulder revealed a glimpse of Carol peering down from the roof of the Buchanan Building. Presumably, Dave was with her. As much as he really wanted some answers, three years at U.A. had taught him one very important thing: never give away a fellow student’s hiding place when a teacher is on the warpath. He straightened his jacket, resigned himself to another lecture that should have been fascinating but was boring as heck, and shuffled inside.
Dave so owed them for this.

AU with bio dad all might where Inko dies during child birth and because of how busy he is in hunting down AFO, along with the safety concerns. All Might gives temporary custody of Izuku to Gran.
1- Toshinori is crushed. He might have been able to suggest Inko take Izuku and hide, but he can't stand to send their baby away alone with nothing, no way of knowing if it's actually safer, nada. Gran thought he might, but when he enters the room and sees how Toshinori is holding the newborn, he knows he won't. Toshinori kisses Izuku's forehead and says he's going to be staying with his grandfather for a bit, but his dad will be back as soon as he can.
2- Toshinori doesn't visit. He didn't go to Gran's house before, not since the day after graduation when he left for the airport, and he won't do it now that AfO could be watching. But he does call. Izuku knows the sound of his father's voice over the phone, knows Gran calls him 'Toshinori', knows there is something he has to do before he can return. When he's little, he imagines a hero, then an astronaut, then a vigilante, then an important businessman, then a researcher. His dad doesn't talk much about his job, always sounds so tired by it, always so eager to hear about his days instead, or maybe tell him about his mom.
3- After the potato smashing, Gran leaves Izuku in the care of a neighbor (she delivers groceries when he's too tired to walk and get some, and her son's a hero Izuku adores, he'll be safe with both of them for a couple hours) and goes to the hospital as Sir and Toshi argue about retirement. He reminds Toshinori that the custody was supposed to be temporary. Sir asks what he's talking about and gets kicked out of the ward. "You weren't arguing back about it as strongly as I thought you would. You lose your stubbornness too?" Gran asks. Toshi sighs, leans his head against the wall, and admits that he wants so badly to go to Gran's, grab Izuku, and vanish for a decade, make up for lost time. But he can't give up on saving people. But he wants so badly to have his family, its all that's been pushing him through years of twenty hour workdays. But people could die, would die, if he did that.
Gran hums, and says Izuku'll be so thrilled to finally see his dad in person. Almost as excited as he'll be to find out his dad is All Might.
Then he hands Toshinori two tickets to I-island, and leaves for his own vacation. (being a single parent is hard)
4- Toshi meets Izuku, and explains on the plane who he is and why he was gone for years- a very brief overview of it, anyway. Izuku keeps pinching himself. Toshi cries in David's arms for a while. Izuku and Melissa hit it off. Izuku asks if he can be a quirkless hero, and Toshi, getting David's pointed looks, says maybe, but he'll have to practice a lot. It really is like a dream, and when its time to go back, Izuku almost asks if they can stay- instead he says 'come back' and Toshi agrees they'll visit, wonders if Izuku will want to attend the academy there for high school, but Izuku wants to be a hero. On their return, Toshi, Gran, and Izuku have to resettle awkwardly around each other, but manage. Toshi brought back support equipment Dave made him, similar to what helped him in college manage his power. He cuts back on hours too, and the HPSC assumes its all because of his injuries.
5- While the rule has been changed to allow it for a couple of years, Izuku is the first quirkless student admitted to the UA Hero Course. No one else from his middle school got in, so its all alone and making new friends, but he manages. He's exited. His dad and grandpa are exited.
Then, during lunch a few days into the school year, Izuku gets a call. It's weird in the middle of the day, but he picks up- "Hey dad, what's up?"
It is not his father's voice that responds. "Huh, 'dad'?"
Izuku freezes, unsure who this scratchy, younger voice could be. Uraraka asks him if he's ok. He hangs up, breathing faster, and calls Gran. - "Someone got dad's phone and i answered and-" / "Hold on kid, let me see if he just forgot it at his desk and- shit there's been a break in at the tower. Izuku, go to Nedzu's office right now and stay there. One of us will call him, don't answer your phone to anyone. Go."

i don't think we talk enough about how Tamaki and Mirio as a gay couple like they are the gay rep for UA like, those guys were shying around eachother in middle school, they hooked up their first and became public in second year and EVVEEEEERYBODY knows about Tamaki and Mirio dating. they got 2 or 3 years worth of anniversaries under their belts and that's just being out about it, they celebrate when they first became met/became friends. Kirishima is so envious of his work study buddy having been in a relationship so long and he wants to be like that. "ITS SO MANLY" Deku congratulates Mirio when he worked at nighteye's actually fuck canon, nighteye is alive still and he also congratulates Mrio saying shit like "I celebrated anniversaries with All might before we broke up, don't be like me keep this one." but then he goes into the "Actually it's not my fault we had creative differences and i was a side compared to Dave but it's whatever." Deku,Bubble girl,Mirio and Centipeder heard this story sevral hundred times before. Somebody once said Nighteye was AllMight's stand in for Dave like AllMight and Dave were together but he wasn't in america anymore so he just picked up Nighteye as a side thing and they broke up and that's why he wasn't on speaking terms I GOT THE TEA & IMA SPILL IT like can you imagine Deku having this Information? "ALL MIGHT YOU DATED AND DIVORCED AND DIDN'T TELL ME?"
"I never married young Midoriya, it was a side thing"
Old man yaoi we are going to. have to talk about AllMight/Nighteye whats their ship name? AllNight (thats what she said) NightMight?
Bro AllMight was definitely playing with Nighteye's heart back when, bro was getting it on and Nighteye wanted more to the relationship but AllMight wanted to keep it as a down low thing they were together in Nighteye's heart. im laughing so hard this is everything to me. They promptly get back together in the end it hits the news, AllMight marries Nighteye and Deku is crying. im crying what the fuck is this lol Endeavor: what the fuck is going on????
OH I LOVE THIS COUPLE
i actually did not like mirio at first, he's a lot... but i always loved tamaki and i came to enjoy mirio more because of him, and their relationship is so beautiful, i love them so much
NIGHTEYE AND ALL MIGHT WELL THATS SOMETHING, not him being a side piece that's so sadknkjdf
totally got the the office reference there, but i like nightmight ?? it has a nice ring into it
i usually get my old man yaoi from good omens and ofmd (and one piece) but i guess we can expand here
U REALLY INVESTED IN BREAKING NIGHT EYES HEARTKJJLSDHFDJ IM GLAD THEY GET MARRIED CAUSE I CANT HANDLE PAIN

The next morning, Toshinori wakes up with a small headache. From what he can remember, he didn’t drink much last night — two beers, maybe three? But it’s not something he’s used to, and he’s grateful he’s not in worse shape.
When he returned to his dorm after walking you home, he quickly realized he smelled pungently of beer and weed. Not to mention various body sprays worn by girls who pressed up against him, asking him all kinds of questions and looking him up and down in a very pointed manner. That, he had certainly not been expecting. Alex had jokingly referred to them as his fan club.
As he stripped off his athletic shorts and boxers, along with the comically-small t-shirt, he recalled catching glimpses of your expression each time it happened. How your jaw had clenched just a little, your eyes narrowing, even as you smiled and, having noticed his discomfort, made some excuse to pull him away.
But Dave was also protective of him, pointing out partygoers who were bad news and known to either get overly competitive and start pointless fights or give freshmen too-strong drinks just for laughs. He chalked it all up to the two of you looking out for him, which he appreciated. Parties have never really been his thing, even back in Japan, and had he been all alone, he has a feeling things might have gone much worse.
Speaking of Dave, he realizes now as he’s getting dressed that he never heard him come in last night. Then again, he passed out pretty quickly, and he’s usually a sound sleeper. He hadn’t even bothered to hang up his towel. Tossing it into his laundry basket, he resolves to tackle that this afternoon.
He scrolls through his phone while drinking pre-workout before his daily run. The photos he managed to post before falling asleep have racked up plenty of likes and comments. Some of his UA classmates have asked about his new American friends, which is unsurprising. Dave, Alex, and Marcus appear in most of his photos. There’s even one of you, leaning in close to him as the others pose and make faces behind the two of you.
In between two comments that are just strings of emojis is one that makes Toshinori snort and shake his head.
Enji Todoroki: Shouldn’t you be studying?
He’s startled when Dave’s door quietly opens, his roommate slipping out with slow, careful movements. Only after he’s shut the door does he turn around and realize he’s not alone.
“Hey,” he stage whispers, an abashed smile on his face as he runs both hands through his messy hair. He’s wearing a pair of black boxer briefs and nothing else, and as he shuffles over to the kitchen island, Toshinori catches a glimpse of a small, dark bruise on his neck, just below his ear.
“I hope we didn’t wake you last night.”
Oh… Suddenly it all makes sense, and Toshinori has trouble hiding his grin. The sight of it makes Dave sigh heavily as he climbs onto one of the barstools.
“Nope.” Toshinori drinks the last of his pre-workout and rinses the glass.
Dave raises an eyebrow. “Would you admit it if we did?”
“Oh, probably.” Toshinori crosses his arms and leans against the counter. “It would be fun payback for last night.”
“Nah, don’t give me that.” Dave groans as he stands and grabs a bottle of water from the fridge. He drains nearly half of it before fixing Toshinori with an amused look. “You had fun. I could tell.”
He can’t deny that, and so he nods. “Did things get wild after I left?”
Dave shrugs before he flops down onto the couch, his feet dangling over one armrest. “Not really. Alex disappeared with that girl Priya. Marcus took pity on the other pledges and got them back to their dorms.”
“That must have been fun.”
“He’s a softie.” Dave waves his hand. “And I… Well…” His smile looks almost flirtatious. “I may have rekindled my situationship with the Tau Kappa Vice President.”
Now that Toshinori thinks about it, he remembers Dave talking closely with a tall young man with white blond hair knotted at the nape of his neck. On more than one occasion, their hands had strayed, alighting on the other’s shoulder or back.
“He’ll probably be gone by the time you get back,” Dave says, stifling a yawn. “I have to finish a couple things for class, but we should grab dinner and talk about your costume.”
Toshinori brightens as he recalls the conversation they had before last night’s party, including Dave’s unexpected offer. “Sounds great.” He checks his pocket for his wireless earbuds and dorm key card before waving at Dave over his shoulder.
He’s happy to step outside and find that the morning is bright and not too humid, even after yesterday’s afternoon storms. There’s a light breeze that cools him as he begins to jog, deciding to circle the campus on the outermost path, near the training facilities.
He hasn’t always been a strong runner. In fact, when he first met Nana, he was quick to tell her it was one of his least favorite things. But in the same breath, he had promised to do it anyway.
Anything worth doing takes hard work. It was something he whole-heartedly believed, even back then. And his determination, the way he looked at her with such conviction and intensity… It had made Nana smile.
I believe in you, Toshinori.
He nearly stumbles now as he hears her voice, so clearly, it’s as if she’s running right beside him. He can hardly hear the music he’s chosen for this workout, a familiar, upbeat playlist. There’s only the pounding of his heart… and her.
I believe in you.
Trying to push it away, because one memory leads to another and another, and he can’t handle that right now, he really can’t, he begins to run faster. Before he knows it, he’s circled the campus three times and is about to start a fourth circuit, wiping at his sweat-slick face with the back of his hand, when he skids to a stop and stares.
It’s you. Staring down at your phone, a pair of sunglasses perched on your nose, wearing a faded long-sleeved shirt, leggings, and slide sandals. As he walks closer, he can see the slight slump of your shoulders, the telltale signs of exhaustion — or, in this case, what he suspects is a hangover.
“Hey,” he calls out, and you lift your head slowly, as if it pains you to do so. You offer him a weak small and an even more pitiful wave.
“Heyyy…” You sound just as tired as you look. “Looks like you were smarter than I was last night.”
Toshinori chuckles. “Maybe a little.”
You shake your head and stare up at him, wincing slightly when the sun peeks through the wispy clouds. “I, uh… remember you walking me back. But it’s kind of hazy.” With a sigh, you ask, “I didn’t say anything super embarrassing, did I?”
He’s tempted to tease you like he did Dave. But seeing your worried frown is enough to compel him to be truthful. “No, you didn’t.”
You breathe a heavy sigh of relief. “Good. Cool.” A beat passes, during which you seem to take stock of his running clothes, his white cutoff tank slightly damp, blond hair pushed back from his perspiring forehead. He can’t see your eyes behind the tinted lenses of your sunglasses. But something makes you swallow hard and glance down at your feet.
“Want to take a break and grab some breakfast?”
Toshinori is surprised by the question, but he finds himself nodding before he can give it any more thought. “Here on campus?”
You shake your head and then immediately regret it, grumbling as you reach up and gingerly touch your temple. “There’s a diner not far from here. Better food, I promise.”
As the two of you begin to walk together, headed in the direction of the downtown sprawl, you add, “Definitely better than Priya’s protein pancakes or Sloane’s egg whites with spinach. At least right now.” You stretch your arms above your head and groan. “I need something greasy.”
“That bad, huh?” Toshinori is struck with concern. He hopes you weren’t sick last night or this morning. But he knows some things are better left unshared, and so he doesn’t pry.
“It was probably all that mixing,” you explain. The two of you are passing under one of the campus archways, signaling your departure from CIHS grounds. The gates are pushed wide open, only ever closed at night. “Rum, liqueur, and then beer?” You visibly shudder.
Toshinori can’t resist patting you on the shoulder, a gesture that could be mistaken for pitying but is only meant to comfort. The way you lean into his touch makes him feel reassured as his face warms.
He quickly stammers, “I’m, um, c-curious to try a traditional American breakfast.”
You look up at him with interest. “You haven’t yet? Not even at one of the dining halls?”
“I usually have a protein shake and just eat at the dorm.” He offers you a teasing smile. “Egg whites with spinach.”
You swat at him, your coordination clearly not all there, but your lips curl into a grin. “Very funny, Toshi…”
He’s fairly certain his heart leaps into his throat when the nickname falls so easily from your lips, like you’ve been saying it this whole time. But this is a first, and suddenly, he’s desperate to hear you say it again.
“Is it okay if I call you that?” you ask, a hint of hesitation in your voice. “I heard Dave say it, and I really liked it, so —”
“Yeah. Of course.” He says it much too fast, almost breathlessly, and with the way he’s staring down at you, like you just told him the most wondrous secret, he’s certain he must look ridiculous.
But you either don’t notice or take it in stride, smiling up at him and murmuring, “Okay. Toshi it is.”
When the two of you reach the diner, he nearly keeps walking, having not noticed the small, vintage-looking sign — Sunny Side Up. It’s a tiny place nestled in between two taller brick buildings, but the inside is cozy and smells like coffee, cinnamon, and sizzling bacon.
You’re seated in a booth near the back, and a few minutes later, a waitress in a checkered apron comes by to take your order. You ask for tea, water, two pancakes, and a veggie omelet with a side of hashbrowns. Toshinori orders a meal called the “Farmer’s Feast,” tempted by its dizzying array of choices.
After your plastic-covered menus have been whisked away, you heave another sigh and cross your arms on the laminate tabletop, letting your head rest on top of them. “Sorry. I’ll be better company when I don’t feel like death warmed up.”
Toshinori merely smiles. “Don’t worry about it.”
You sit in companionable silence for several minutes, during which you finally take your sunglasses off, revealing tired eyes. Toshinori is briefly distracted by the flatscreen television mounted on a nearby wall, the muted broadcast showing a group of heroes from one of the Los Angeles agencies.
The sight stirs something in his mind. “Have you put in a request for your hero costume yet?”
“No. I really should, though, if I want it ready in two weeks.”
Grimoire had given the class a specific deadline, and it seemed that no one wanted to find out what might happen if they missed it. Last night, Alex and Marcus told Toshinori they had gone straight to the support labs to submit their requests in person.
“I have another idea, if you’re interested — an offer, I guess.”
You straighten up, looking a little more awake, as he continues, “Dave insisted on making mine. We went through all the specifics, and he says he already has a good idea of where he’ll start.”
He feels a little nervous as he goes on, explaining, “And when I told him about your overheating — what you said on the first day of class — he offered to… make yours, too. If you want.”
Your eyes widen. “Seriously? Oh, wow…”
Toshinori finds it frustrating that his first thought upon seeing your surprised, grateful expression is that it’s cute. He needs to focus, not embarrass himself. But it’s so hard when he can see how excited you are, how it practically makes you glow.
“I’ve heard of Dave’s work. He’s just a college student, but also, like, a big deal. I… That’s…” You look conflicted, and then almost shy as you ask, “He’s sure he wants to do that? He doesn’t have to. I can just put in a general request.”
Toshinori shakes his head. “He’s positive. I’m pretty sure he sees it as a challenge.” He cracks a smile, trying to put you at ease. “He started rambling about different alloys and coolants and heat resistant components, which I definitely didn’t follow. Trust me — he’s all in.”
You look noticeably relieved. But before you can say anything else, the food arrives.
Your pancakes, omelet,  and hash browns occupy three small plates on your side of the table, whereas Toshinori’s meal… He didn’t fully realize it would be this much food.
Tumblr media
Eggs, bacon, and toast on one large plate, a stack of buttermilk pancakes on another, a yogurt parfait with fruit, yet another plate full of eggs… It’s a lot. So it’s a good thing he’s starving.
He glances up at you with an embarrassed half-smile, certain that his cheeks are more pink than he would like. But you appear completely unfazed, simply informing him with a cheerful smile, “I’m probably gonna steal a piece of toast. It’s a hangover privilege. Just a heads up.”
As the two of you eat, you become more talkative, seemingly revitalized by fried potatoes and buttered bread. Toshinori asks if you’re feeling prepared to take the first American Hero History quiz, which leads to you both quizzing each other on information covered in this week’s lectures.
You’re in between questions about hero labor laws when his gaze snags on something out of the corner of his eye — his phone, resting on the table, screen lit up with a news alert. Unable to resist, he picks it up and frowns as he reads the headline.
Fourth Pro Hero Missing in Japan
When he taps on the notification and begins reading, he can’t help but notice another news story further down the page: Gang Activity on the Rise in San Francisco
“What’s wrong?”
Toshinori’s head snaps up at the sound of your voice, and when he sees how worried you look, he immediately feels guilty. He should have had the patience to wait until later to look.
“Sorry. I just…” Scrolling back to the top of the page, he turns his phone towards you, showing you the headline. “I’ve been keeping up with this.”
Your eyes scan the screen as you nod. “Yeah, I’ve heard about it… That’s crazy.” After he’s set his phone aside, making a point of flipping it face down, you ask, “Do you wish you were there? To help?”
He hesitates and then admits, “Yes… But my mentor wouldn’t let me, even if I were there.” His words sound a little bitter, so he amends, “I understand, though. I still have a lot to learn. And I’m sure the HPSC and the police are working hard to find them.”
You sit back against the vinyl seat, tugging the long sleeves of your shirt down over your hands. “That makes sense.” The waitress comes by and collects your empty plates, promising that she’ll be back with more tea. But you assure her you’re fine with what’s left of your water. Once she’s gone, you ask, “What made you want to study abroad?”
It’s an understandable question, considering what he just said about wishing he were home. Toshinori thinks for a moment before answering, trying to give you a version of the truth while omitting certain details — about his quirk, about Nana, about the danger he was in, about All for One.
“My mentor — his hero name is Gran Torino — He thought it was a good idea.” He recalls their conversations after he graduated from UA as he explains, “He said studying abroad would give me more opportunities. Help me have a better idea of what I’m getting into, becoming a pro hero.”
“He’s got a point.” You glance over at the television screen. There’s an ad running for a luxury hair care brand, starring none other than Spectacle, currently ranked at #5 on the American Hero Billboard Chart.
As she flips her long, blonde hair in slow motion, you sigh and hunch forward, leaning on the table. “Sure, you help people, change lives, do great things… But then there’s this.” You gesture at the commercial, now zooming in on Spectacle’s airbrushed face as she blows viewers a kiss.
“I don’t know if it’s the same in Japan, but here, being a top hero isn’t just about your skills in the field. It’s about celebrity. People want glitz and glamor, gossip…” You snort. “… spectacle — no pun intended.”
Toshinori reaches for the bill and holds it above his head when you try to snatch it. Ignoring your pout, he keeps the conversation on the subject at hand. “It’s true. You have to carefully consider your image and how the public perceives you. I imagine it can be exhausting, especially if you’re constantly in the spotlight.”
After letting out an agitated huff when he gently pushes away the cash you slide across the table, you murmur, “But it’s worth it, I think… if you can make a real difference.”
As he pays for your meals, Toshinori thinks about your words. He’s tempted to ask about why you decided to become a hero. He can tell you’re in it for the same reasons as him — to be someone people can count on, a source of hope and strength. But it feels like much too personal a question to ask, at least right now.
The two of you step out onto the sidewalk, and you narrowly stifle a yawn. “It feels like a good day to take a nap. Maybe I can sleep away my poor life choices.”
He smiles and keeps pace with you, walking back toward campus. He should probably return to the dorm and do some chores and studying before meeting up with Dave this evening. It’s a beautiful day, but one of the nice things about living in Southern California is that more are sure to follow.
It’s not until you’re both retracing your steps and passing through the school’s gates that he figures out what’s been flitting around his head ever since your conversation about the realities of going pro. And even though it hurts his heart to relay it to you, he does.
“Someone once told me… that no matter how scared you are, you should always smile — to show that you’re okay.”
Something in his voice must alert you to the true weight of his words, how much they mean to him. Because they’re Nana’s words. You stop beside him, staring up at his face with rapt attention, waiting for him to continue.
Toshinori swallows hard. “Because in this world, the ones who are smiling are the strongest.” He shrugs, glancing away from the intensity of your gaze. “I just… I think that’s different from acting, or putting on a show for publicity or the tabloids. People can usually tell when you’re faking. It has to come from a genuine place. So… that’s what I try to do.”
You’re quiet for a moment, absorbing what he’s said. He’s briefly worried that you’ll disagree, or tell him there are more important things in this world than smiling.
Instead, you beam at him, and it’s as if you aren’t tired at all, the sunny expression wiping away any signs of exhaustion. “I love that,” you tell him. “And it fits you so perfectly.”
It seems like a struggle, to remember how to breathe, his heart suddenly feeling much too full in his chest. “It does?”
“Yep.” You continue walking, glancing away as you lift a hand to your cheek. It almost looks as if you shake your head before continuing, “You, uh… You smile a lot. I can tell they’re all real, but like… different.”
As the two of you pass by a group of cyclists circling the campus, you walk closer to him, your arm brushing against his.
“One, I think of as your hero smile — your All Might smile. You have another when you meet new people, as just you, Toshinori. There’s one for your friends. That one’s more relaxed…” You hesitate. “And then… um… It’s like a secret smile, if that makes sense. When you’re really happy.”
Toshinori has no doubt in his mind that he’s blushing, and he can do nothing to stop it. Not when you’ve said something so kind and thoughtful. “I — I didn’t realize… Thank you.”
You wave your hand, and since you’re looking away again, it’s hard to see your expression. “It’s just an observation. Sorry. I hope that wasn’t weird.”
The two of you have reached a split in the path, and he stops, knowing you’ll likely be headed in the opposite direction, back to your apartment building.
“No,” he assures you, his voice firm. “It means a lot to hear that.” More than I can say, he thinks, his words already feeling thick with emotion. He pushes it back and, somewhat ironically, smiles down at you. “Really. Thank you.”
Your smile is a little shy and wobbly as you look down at your sandals and that back up at him. “If you want to do more studying for that quiz, let me know. Oh.” Eyes widening, a little laugh tumbles out of you. “But you don’t even have — Hold on… Can I see your phone really quick?”
He doesn’t think to ask why as he pulls it from his pocket and hands it over. Watching, he sees you tap the contacts icon and then create a new one. When you’ve finished, you send a text, and he hears your phone chime in your pocket.
“There you go.” You give his phone back and muster a brighter smile. “Now you can let me know if you want to study. We could always meet at one of the libraries or something.”
Toshinori nods. “Yeah, that sounds great.”
It looks like you’re on the verge of saying something else. But then your mouth closes tight and you quickly turn around, waving over your shoulder as you walk away. “See you later, Toshi!”
Hearing that nickname coming from you still makes him feel strange, like his skin is tingling while his stomach does a little flip. He walks back to the dorm in a daze, unable to stop replaying it all in his head, from breakfast to your last exchange.
Just when he’s hoping no one witnessed him nearly walk straight into the glass door of the Honors Complex, much too distracted for his own good, he steps inside and immediately spots Aspen.
“You feeling okay, Toshinori?” The RA’s voice is light and airy. From the smell of it, he’s carrying a mug full of lavender tea. His teal hair is braided down his back, and he’s wearing an oversized orange cardigan that trails down to his knees.
“Yeah! I’m fine.” Realizing he’s speaking too loudly for the otherwise-silent lobby, he lowers his voice and politely asks, “How are you?” He’s hardly seen Aspen since move-in day, apart from a handful of brief glimpses here and there.
“Oh, fine.” Aspen takes a long sip of tea, staring up at Toshinori all the while. “Are you coming to the floor meeting this evening?”
Thinking about his dinner plans with Dave, as well as the lingering excitement he feels about discussing plans for his hero costume, he shakes his head. “Sorry. Studying… and stuff.”
He’s so painfully bad at lying that he half expects Aspen to counter his claim. But the RA simply shrugs, seeming unbothered. “No worries. But…” He trails off rather dramatically and steps forward, until he’s close enough to press a fingertip against Toshinori’s chest. “… don’t forget about my poetry reading next month.”
In truth, Toshinori had already forgotten. But he smiles widely and says, “Of course! I’ll be there.”
Aspen looks pleased as he tucks a loose strand of hair behind his ear. “I think you’ll enjoy it. I’m trying something new with this collection — something raw and evocative.”
Toshinori slowly begins to inch towards the elevators. “Wow. That sounds… intense.”
Aspen nods, already looking distant as he muses aloud to himself. “Opening with a sonnet would be unexpected. Putting an experimental twist on traditional structure, subverting strict form… Or an aubade, perhaps…”
Calling out a hurried goodbye while Aspen’s attention is drifting, Toshinori finally makes a break for an elevator that’s just arrived. Maybe he can convince Dave to suffer alongside him when the time comes.
When he gets back to his room, he empties his pockets, planning to take a quick shower before doing anything else. It’s only then that he sees a missed call and voicemail from Gran Torino, from just ten minutes ago.
Toshinori sits down heavily on his bed before switching to speakerphone and pressing play, letting his mentor’s gruff voice fill the small space.
“I’m sure you’ve already seen the news. But nothing has changed, Toshinori. You need to stay out of this. Don’t forget, kid. I know you. Which means I damn well know you’re still worrying over something that’s out of your control.”
There’s a weary sigh before he continues. “Your classes are what’s most important. Keep working hard. But if you’re determined to have your eye on something… pay attention to what’s happening over there. Not over here.”
He pauses, as if he’s considering saying more. But then he grumbles, “I need to get some shuteye. But send me an email when you get a chance.” He pauses, his voice softening as he says, “Take care of yourself.” And then the recording ends.
Toshinori’s brow furrows as he considers Gran Torino’s words. It does seem like a cruel exercise in futility, to worry about things happening in Japan that he’s in no position to do anything about. But he’s not completely useless. His mentor is right. There might be other things he can do to help people right here, in this country.
He reopens his news app, where the article he was reading about the disappearances remains pulled up. Scrolling down, he clicks on the other headline that had caught his eye — Gang Activity on the Rise in San Francisco.
There aren’t many details at this point. No known organization name or any kind of identifying symbol. But the suspicion of a new gang on the rise comes from multiple reports of a group engaging in criminal acts ranging from petty robbery to grand theft.
Only one image has been captured of them, on a passing pedestrian’s phone — six individuals varying in height and build, all wearing head to toe black. Any security camera footage captured during the time of each incident has been rendered unviewable, possibly as a result of one of the criminals’ quirks.
It seems strange, the idea of a gang — a new one, at that — being wholly uninterested in leaving their mark and taking clear credit for their misdeeds. It makes Toshinori suspect there’s more to this than anyone currently knows for certain. He updates his news alerts and decides to keep abreast of any developments.
Realizing he’s been sitting hunched over his phone for far too long, he stands and stretches with a rumbling groan before setting it on his charging pad. But he continues to dwell on his mentor’s advice, all the way through his shower, while he tries to focus on his public speaking homework, and even when he decides to take a break and watch some mindless TV.
Interspersed with Gran Torino’s words are memories of Nana — when she first explained the facets of One for All, the sound of her laugh whenever he said something that caught her off guard, the moments when he could tell her mind was someplace else, perhaps dwelling on a past she chose never to tell him about. Each glimpse into his past feels like a shard of glass pushed straight through his chest, and as much as he tries to stop the flow of them, building his walls higher and higher, they keep coming. It’s as if by repeating her words to you, he summoned her to the forefront of his mind.
It’s only when he remembers needing to do laundry that he fully snaps out his increasingly-frustrated thoughts, and it’s all because of what he finds on the back of his pledge t-shirt from last night.
He’s hung it on the back of his bedroom door so that he can take a photo of all the signatures he collected and send it to Dave. As he zooms in, his eyes find your name near the top, along with something small tucked beneath it.
Lowering his phone, he steps closer, lifting the shirt so that he can more clearly see what you’ve written.

Midnight vs Present Mic
POV Midnight:
If I happen to win this battle, could I be the special guest on your radio show? I promise I won't promote the perfume company that sponsors me… What? You think I'm too sexy for your regular audience? That's ridiculous! Put me on the show!
Yamada, this is quite the encounter. I've been observing you since you were just a student. I'm well aware that absurd voice of yours is something I wish to avoid. Unfortunately, it's the one that can mess with my Somnambulist and render it useless. But you need a deep breath before you attack. That's where I'll stop you!
Do you remember my hero costume from way back when we were students? It was bold but functional! Design and functionality as one! What a pity. I never expected it would be banned. It was far ahead of its time.
_
POV Present Mic:
Ooh boy! I don't get a lot of chance to spar with you. This will make great content for my radio show! How's this for title: UA Teacher's White Hot Battle! The undisputed winner - Present Mic!
I know your Somnambulist is a scent that can take me out with one hit, which means it's a pretty terrifying quirk to have to go up against. Maybe I'll manage if I can blow away that scandalous smell with my Voice. *Sigh* I feel like I'm going to run out of breath...
You've looked after me so much, Midnight, and I'd love to have you as a guest on my radio show, but I'm afraid you're a bit too risqué for the airwaves. The censors would murder me! You sure live up to your reputation as a sexy hero.

This week has been a WEEK.
Ended up getting back to my apartment around 3AM on Tuesday after the trip home (and all the god damn family drama) and still made it into work at 8. Then had to do walk in clinic where someone accused our RN of calling him a piece of shit in a 20 minute rant because I asked what the bubbling noise was - our clinic toilets backing up once again. Covered our UA clinic and someone was $20 for being sober from stimulants! First time seeing that - usual draw is $1-$3. And I got permission to take over morale events for the clinic so I’m officially planning a night out at Dave & Busters with kiddos and partners invited.
Was supposed to get my glasses Wednesday but those weren’t ready until after they closed. Slept in so late and mentally prepped to go back to work yesterday. Kind of glad I wasn’t there because there was a patient who the ED sent to us who was in acute withdrawal from alcohol (which can be deadly) and needed medical treatment, but because has substance use disorder, they sent him to us even though his vitals were off the charts and he was hallucinating. He was lying on my friend’s office floor and she had to walk him down and explain that he needed to be checked out by medical staff to the triage nurse.
Yesterday morning’s group was okay but I was really tired and punchy. Our building had another flood when they flushed the fire system on the 2nd floor into a blocked pipe by the restrooms. (Contractor I’m talking to asked if the building was over a burial ground given how much plumbing issues were having 🙃 haven’t even told him they installed the windows backwards and they had to be replaced over the summer). Sessions were okay but evening group went off the rails. Had to tap on a colleague to check on an intoxicated patient while leading the other 10 in group, then do a check in on another in distress. Video groups are fuuuuun. Colleague and I ended up staying late and talking about how batshit crazy our jobs are sometimes, and the importance of perspective. Night ended with crying laughing, a shower beer, and passing out early.
Anyways, today was full admin WFH and I finally got my new glasses. Holy crap are they different! I’m good with the bifocals. Now gonna enjoy a glass of wine and try to write. Attempting to do more for Jake and Darlin’ in D-Day now that we’re hitting ✨drama✨
Pics of the new glasses and my tired, sunburnt face under the cut.

Character Perception Evolution
Sometimes, believe it or not, I change my views on fictional characters.
This post will be updated with any example of such characters I can think of.
Ahsoka Tano (Star Wars) - While most people cite her being considered an annoying, pointless, and all-around hated kid sidekick character and evolving into one of the most beloved characters in the franchise, I actually have a different take. I never minded Ahsoka when she debuted in 2008. I thought she was largely inoffensive and was happy to see another lead female character in the series given how little of them we had. And yes, she only got better and better as she grew, and totally deserved her popularity. But something’s been wrong with her ever since her time travel-based survival of her big duel with Darth Vader, accelerating with her depiction by Rosario Dawson (complete with some awkward as Hell interactions with Luke Skywalker) and Dave Filoni’s dumbfounding remark that Ahsoka’s voice being with the voices of other dead Jedi in The Rise of Skywalker doesn’t necessarily mean she’s dead. It feels like she’s become a Creator’s Pet, a character that Filoni refuses to let go of past her natural expiration date. That’s why the primary excitement I have for the upcoming Ahsoka series is for Thrawn, not for her. She just isn’t that interesting anymore.
Amarant Coral (Final Fantasy IX) - I disliked Amarant back when I first played Final Fantasy IX, seeing him as this generic badass loner edgelord character who didn’t have very well-written character development. However, a few years back I replayed the game. And while his character development remains as shoddy as I remember (I feel like the developers just ran out of time and both he and Freya suffered as a result), I found myself greatly enjoying Amarant because I now could see that he’s pretty clearly a knowing parody of a generic badass loner edgelord character! The game knows he’s a jerkish stick-in-the-mud for no good reason and has fun with it, with Amarant’s snarky comments and frustration at having to be dragged all over creation by Zidane and his merry band of idealists making him hilarious.
Cain Madhouse (To The Abandoned Sacred Beasts) - Refer to this post. I first encountered Cain through the anime, where I thought he was a cool villain but not much else than that. He seemed to be there purely for the sake of providing the series with a central antagonist. Then I read the manga, and was honestly taken aback at just how interesting, complex and even sympathetic Cain was as a character. He isn’t even the true villain of the story, a role actually shared by his abusive father and the evil religious nutcase he’s in cahoots with. While he’s certainly far from a blameless martyr, Cain truly is doing what he believes to be for the best, and in his own twisted way still loves the people in his life that he cares for and genuinely wishes to do right by them. And all this nuance despite being named “Cain Madhouse!”
Charmcaster (Ben 10) - Here I’m talking about one version of the character in particular: the one from Ben 10: Omniverse. Back in 2014 when she was fresh, I greatly enjoyed this take on Charmcaster. She was really funny and cute, her magic was badass, her design was wonderful, her voice-acting was entertaining, and in general she was a major step-up from the version we’d gotten in Alien Force and Ultimate Alien. Unfortunately, time has not been kind to her. I don’t hate her, but I can’t fully enjoy her when so many of those AF/UA aspects are still in play with her, which makes her and her trajectory somewhat nonsensical, not to mention tasteless and ultimately kind of pointless. That was OV’s whole problem, I suppose: trying desperately to reconcile the original Ben 10 with the retcon-ridden AF/UA and largely failing. It doesn’t help that the next incarnation of Charmcaster in the rebooted continuity is so much better, as are similar characters in other shows such as Lena from the new DuckTales.
Dawn (Pokémon) - In the Diamond & Pearl anime, I didn’t care for Dawn for a good while, partly because doing a rehash of May immediately after May had left was insulting especially when I loved May so much and partly because there were other issues with her character’s utilization that irked me. However, after her subsequent, much-improved appearances in Best Wishes and Journeys, I looked back at her in her anime series of origin and realized that it really wasn’t Dawn that was ever the problem - it was Ash and Brock! It’s a franchise-wide trend: whenever Dawn is paired up with literally anyone else, she shines. Even the rehashing of May and personal gripes I have don’t matter much because she’s so likable. But when with Ash and Brock as their traveling companion, she by and large becomes the most generic goodie-goodie shojou girl possible. Just detach her from them and she’s a solid character.
Eraqus (Kingdom Hearts) - That great character design and Mark Hamill’s impeccable voice-acting made me think he was sympathetic when I originally played Birth by Sleep. Overtime, that impression faded. Yes, I agree with him that darkness is a problem and vigilance against it is needed; even if he was supposed to be wrong about that, he isn’t. The problem is that he goes about that in the dumbest, most counter-productive way possible. Terra would literally not have a darkness problem if not for Eraqus’ dumbass teaching methods. Worse still, everything that goes wrong in the story could have been avoided if he was just honest with his pupils about everything, including the fact that Xehanort might not be on the up and up given his obsession with potentially causing an apocalypse, an obsession he literally scarred Eraqus over. And maybe he shouldn’t have jumped immediately to murder as the solution to Ventus’ awareness of his own special existence posing a danger to the universe. If that wasn’t enough, we later learn he openly cheats at chess and just expects everyone to take it.
Katsuki Bakugo (My Hero Academia) - I used to hate this character; he was obnoxious and unlikable, yet the narrative and other characters never reacted to him the way they should and bended over backward to accommodate him. However, nowadays I don’t hate him so much as I feel sorry for him, on a meta level. Bakugo could have been a superb character with a great redemption arc, the pieces are all there.  But for some reason or other, Horikoshi instead decided to keep him the angry, violent, petty, egotistical asshole he’s always been, and justifies doing so while also playing at redeeming him by treating his super-dickery as comedic. I’m sorry, but that doesn’t work when it didn’t start out as comedic and had terrible effects on people like Izuku. Bakugo’s only been funny when he’s the butt of the joke, not when others still have to suffer from his rage-outs. It’s sad that Bakugo can’t live up to his potential, especially when others in the series like Endeavor (who’s a far worse person) do.
Kevin 11 (Ben 10) - I loved Kevin as a villain in the original Ben 10, hated his sudden change in character complete with a quickie redemption and out of nowhere romance with Gwen in Alien Force but was willing to tolerate him and wait to see where they’d go with him because he was admittedly pretty funny, loathed what ended up happening with him in Ultimate Alien which turned me off him altogether, and in Omniverse...ditto what I said about Charmcaster. But then there’s the continuity reboot version, and because of it I now have to admit that while I’ll always hold a soft spot for him, the original Kevin doesn’t hold up too well either. He’s a pre-pubescent kid named Kevin 11, yet he’s a purely evil psychopath and his villainous appearance is that of a grotesque mutant chimera? Yeeeah, I think the school bully with a troubled home life who has his own evil version of Ben’s Omnitrix and its aliens makes a lot more sense. Him not changing his ways so easily, staying Ben’s rival no matter how much they might team up, and having feelings for Gwen that are comedically one-sided also helps.
Kyo Sohma (Fruits Basket) - Back in the day, Fruits Basket to me was just the 2001 anime series, and I honestly found Kyo pretty annoying. His hair-trigger temper and violent inclinations were a turn-off, as was his dub voice and that whole concluding arc with his true form. Then I read the manga and saw the faithful 2019 adaptation, complete with an incredibly improved performance by Jerry Jewell, and now I absolutely love the guy! No joke, he’s easily one of the best, most interesting and likable male leads in a shojou, as is Yuki.
Lysandre and Diantha (Pokémon) - Just see this post for details.
Mary Jane Watson (Spider-Man) - I’m talking specifically about the version portrayed by Kirsten Dunst in the Sam Raimi trilogy. She came off as a generic superhero girlfriend in the first movie to me, a hodgepodge of several characters from the comics instead of a proper adaptation of Mary Jane. It got worse in the second movie, where she played the annoying obstructive love interest trope. But despite the stupidity of having her be kidnapped in the climax again, I found myself really enjoying her in the third movie. This made me pay closer attention to her in the first movie, and to check out all her deleted material (much of which was included in the novelization) in the second movie. Not only did I find her to be a strong, truly human-feeling character, but she was more faithful to the comics’ Mary Jane in several key areas than many give her credit for, and Kirsten Dunst always gave a great performance.
Prince Demande and the Black Moon Clan (Sailor Moon) - I recall liking these villains fine as a kid, but feeling like they weren’t as good as the Dark Kingdom. While the Dark Kingdom is still my personal favorite group of villains, I now have to concede that the Black Moon Clan in both the manga and anime are superior. They’ve got the more complex set-up, feel darker and more dangerous, and have by far the best of Chaos’ incarnations in the Death Phantom. Meanwhile, I recall feeling some sympathy for Demande when I was young; his situation wasn’t an easy one after all, and he did love his brother very much, not to mention in the anime he gave his life for Usagi. Then I grew up and learned what rape was. Fuck this guy. Even if I love him as a villain, he’s a horrible person and no sacrificial death can change that.
Regina Mills (Once Upon a Time) - My stance for a long time has been that Regina was an overall good character in the first three seasons but then totally fell apart from some truly appalling creator favoritism. Having revisited the show recently, I don’t entirely revoke this stance, but it’s more complicated than I thought. When you get down to it, Regina only ever worked properly in Season 1, where she was a humanized yet still proudly evil antagonist. Season 2 not only dropped the ball in terms of consequences for her, but it fast-tracked her down the redemption path in a way that was ham-fisted and not believable. Season 3 handled her on the heroes’ side much better, but it’s nigh impossible to reconcile with the backslide she went through in the second half of Season 2, where she is depicted as this absolute psychopath delusional beyond the point of recovery, but Adam and Eddy genuinely don’t view her that way and weren’t meaning to make her come off that way - in their eyes, her grievances are all legitimate. And that’s really what I have a hard time ever getting around: the notion that the villainous Regina I loved in Season 1 was never the real Regina, just a stand-in until A&E had free reign to finally give us their Regina and re-orient the story to being “how the poor sad Evil Queen got her happy ending” like they originally envisioned.
Roxas (Kingdom Hearts) - So TV Tropes has Roxas for this trope, saying he was divisive due to the KH2 prologue he starred in, but stuff like his FM boss battle, his presence in Coded, and especially 358/2 Days increased his popularity, to the point where KH3 resurrected him to give him a happy ending. I’m....kind of the exact opposite.  Honestly, I’ve always liked KH2′s prologue, warts and all, and while at first it was disappointing Roxas wasn’t a huge presence in KH2 given all the hype he was given, as time went on the more I appreciated his story and what was being said with it. It was genuinely complex and thought-provoking. I do not like the black-coated Organization XIII member Roxas that got shoved down our throats afterward, I tend to care about him the least out of 358/2 Days’ cast when playing that game, and I hate how such a nuanced story as what we had in KH2 gets undone, in a nonsensical way, solely for the sake of cheap fanservice (ditto for Xion’s case). Yeah, the FM boss battle is awesome, but for me mainly so because I get to kick that stupid black-coated Roxas’ ass!
Rumpelstiltskin (Once Upon a Time) - Another case of a character that’s listed on TV Tropes, saying that his popularity waned because of him constantly going through the Heel Face Revolving Door, which especially damaged his relationship with Belle. For me, that in of itself wasn’t the problem. He’s the freaking Dark One, practically the show’s main villain! Of course it’s going to be hard for him to ever reform. What soured me on him for a long time was the narrative’s framing of him and other characters’ reactions to him, which were increasingly insufficient for what an utter bastard he truly was. Going back over the show, I’ve somewhat softened on him again since he himself was a mostly well-written, well-acted and consistent character across 5 whole seasons, and I don’t feel like taking mistakes from the narrative and other characters out on him; it’s not like he asked for any of that. It’s just in Seasons 6 and 7 where I feel he was out-of-character on the whole, to two opposite, incompatible extremes.
Seto Kaiba (Yu-Gi-Oh!) - When I first began watching the anime, I thought Kaiba was a cool and sympathetic rival character. As it went on, though, I got sick of him being such a one-man Spotlight Stealing Squad and how hard the makers of the anime were actively trying to make him look cool. It didn’t help when I read the manga and saw this wasn’t the case for him here; he wasn’t even the deuteragonist the way the anime positions him, Joey was. But enjoying him in The Abridged Series made me revisit the actual show, and I actually realized that while those issues I had are technically still there, the 4Kids English dub has always done its best to mitigate them with Eric Stuart’s voicework and lines, which actually keeps him far more in line with his original manga self, who isn’t an overtly sympathetic, honorable and “cool” rival but a crazy, extravagant jerkass. And I love him that way. Screw the rules, he has money!
Shadow the Hedgehog (Sonic the Hedgehog) - Shadow was awesome in Sonic Adventure 2, I was definitely a fan of him there. But then his popularity caused him to be immediately resurrected, to diminishing returns, which made me sour on the character and consider him emblematic of the Sonic franchise’s problems. I wished he had just stayed a one-shot. However, recent things such as the Sonic Boom TV series, the Sonic Prime TV series, the Sonic Forces DLC, The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog and the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie have all made me re-evaluate Shadow. Now I think he’s not bad as a series mainstay, just subject to being mis-used...but hey, so is every other character, so it’s not an issue unique to him. Used well, he’s honesty one of the franchise’s best characters.
Slade Wilson (Teen Titans) - I used to truly buy into the notion of him as a badass Anti-Hero / Anti-Villain like many people did, but after reading his original stories up through “The Judas Contract” and especially Christopher Priest’s run on the Deathstroke comic series, I no longer hold that view of him. Slade’s a badass combatant, sure, and as a threatening villain you definitely have to appreciate him. But as a person, he is not a badass. At all. He’s a pitiful, prideful, predatory scumbag. He’s “badass” and “honorable” in the exact same way that Walter White is: it’s all a big smokescreen to compensate for what a small, lowly, wretched excuse for a human being he is. Great character, great villain, absolutely intolerable person.
Supreme Leader Snoke (Star Wars) - When The Force Awakens came out, I didn’t like Snoke at all. He was the cheapest of retreads (an old, decrepit Dark Side user who rules the Empire and corrupts a Skywalker into becoming his evil apprentice), the cheapest of plot contrivances (the remnants of the Empire can only become a powerful threat and the victory from Return of the Jedi undone due to this fucker from out of nowhere), and the cheapest of Mystery Boxes (who is he and where did he come from and why does he do what he does, isn’t it so mysterious, don’t you just wanna speculate and theorize all over the internet?) As annoyed as I was that he died without any answers in The Last Jedi, I also liked him better as just Kylo Ren’s stepping stone. Better effects for him and a hammier performance by Andy Serkis helped. And when The Rise of Skywalker revealed he was literally a puppet of the resurrected Palpatine, everything about him just clicked. Stupid people online rant about insufficient foreshadowing for Palpatine’s return, but rewatch the trilogy with Palpatine in mind and Snoke himself - everything about him - is the biggest piece of foreshadowing there is.
Ulrich Stern (Code Lyoko) - Through Code Lyoko’s first two seasons, Ulrich was hands-down the weakest part of the show for me. I didn’t think he was interesting or likable, and his Will-They-Won’t-They romance with Yumi, who could honestly do much better, was so exhausting. But then we hit Season 3, and the two-part prequel. Everything about Ulrich’s depiction in that just screamed “This guy is an asshole, you’re not supposed to like him”. It reframed everything we’ve seen of him as deliberate; even his lust for Yumi now comes off as just a way for him to feel better about himself since deep down he’s aware of what a shithead he is. Then when we returned to the present day action, Yumi firmly breaks off any potential for dating him. From this point on, Ulrich has to develop on his own terms, and he becomes so much better as a character; I actually found myself liking him, sympathizing with him, and appreciating his willingness to change for the better; a great foil to William whose stubborn unwillingness to do the same costs him and everyone else around him. The season 3 finale reminding me of the reason Ulrich became the way he used to be in his absolute scumbag of a father also helped a lot. He’s not my favorite and still kind of a dick, but I like him now.
Venom (Spider-Man) - Like most kids, I thought Venom was awesome growing up. Once I got older and looked up his history, I found that the majority of it was not very flattering, making me feel more conflicted about the character. Where do I stand on him now, you may ask? It’s simple, really: I love Venom - the symbiote. It’s Eddie Brock who I feel is the problem. Beyond the name and bonding with the Venom symbiote, I don’t think there’s been a consistent thing about this guy across all of his incarnations. The issues with Venom can almost always be traced back to the human part of the equation, because he was thought up on the fly by David Micheline with very little about him solidified beyond being an angry psychopath. I much prefer Venom as the symbiote, the host body be damned, and I’m glad that depiction has been gaining traction in recent years in various comics, TV shows and video games.
Xehanort (Kingdom Hearts) - So I totally subscribe to what’s on TV Tropes about Xehanort the Keyblade Master (was hailed as a great villain in Birth by Sleep, now seen as a horrible villain for everything that followed). But I want to talk about Terra-Xehanort. Because while I love him and both split halves of him, back in the olden days I preferred Ansem over Xemnas. He had the cooler design, a more vivid personality, was tied far closer to the Disney Villains, and of course was the villain in the original Kingdom Hearts (forever my favorite even if KH2 is technically a better game - and even then KH still has the better story). Now it’s reversed. Even disregarding how (with the exception of Dream Drop Distance) Xemnas retained his dignity as a character going forward while Ansem didn’t, there is just a weight and presence to Xemnas that I’ve fallen in love with more and more as time passes. He has the same depth and darkness of character as Ansem but takes it even further. His plans are even smarter and with more direct involvement from him. And of course, there’s him being KH2′s Final Boss, which means he’s irrevocably associated with the peak of the series to me. He’s the only incarnation of Xehanort whom I can safely call both a great character and villain to this day.

🦷 and 🏹 for the ocxcanon ask game!!!! :-3
Oh boy thank you for the ask :] I’m gonna do this one for toshinori :3
🦷: describe their relationship in three words?
Soulmates, returning, bright
🏹 : what is oc’s relationship with the other canon characters?
Sunny is a UA art teacher, so they have a mentor relationship with most of their students. Midoriya gets to see a bit more of them however, as he’s toshinori’s successor. Midoriya is the one who sees how Toshi and Sunny act together, and gets them to get back together 💀
Dave is the only other canon character that comes to mind when I think about individual relationships, as he’s mutual college friends with Sunny and Toshi. He’s the original matchmaker 😘 he introduced them in class or at a party or smth and they hit it off

*looks at Nighteye being a bitch to Izuku in the apprentice au* it appears someone needs to have their face introduced to my baseball bat. In other non-violent news, does Izuku meet Melissa and Dave earlier than in canon? I bet Uraraka is upset the boy who saved her isn't at UA.
Uraraka was very disappointed, but doesn’t learn why the kid who saved her didn’t make it in until much later, which completely shakes her already rattled sense of trust in UA.
As for Melissa and Dave, they do talk over video call earlier, but they still don’t meet in person until the expo.

Thanks for that answer and while I'm not fond of Toshi dying, I am curious about a canon divergence where he and AFO both go down in an act of mutual annihilation during their first battle (and AFO won't get recovered), if only for the consequences. If you're willing to do that one, I'd love to hear it, but if AM dying is a hard no, could you perhaps do an AU where AFO dies for real + consequences?
mmm, yes, how about some middle ground- AfO and All Might both die in the first fight, but Toshinori Yagi survives, barely.
1- Toshi drags AfO's corpse behind him as he goes to recon with Gran and Sir. One For All is fading, slipping out of his fingers, and he grips AfO tighter to try and hold it in. It doesn't prevent his strength from leaving, but it keeps AfO's body from being snatched. Sir is stunned and horrified by the sight, his trembling call of 'All Might?' ignored. Gran breaks through and takes the corpse from him only after he says in a voice more gentle than he's used in years that "It's done, Toshinori."
2- Gran leaves to take care of the body. Sir gets Toshinori to the hospital. He's in critical state for days. When he finally wakes up, the blood's been all washed off. He says that All For One is dead, and so is One For All. He meets Sir's eyes. "You looked?" He asks. Sir looks down. "Only to see if you'd wake up." Planning All Might's funeral, after all, would have required a lot of time. But Toshinori sighs, and says they'll still need that funeral, and Sir, as his sidekick, gets the agency. Sir says he'll just do the paperwork to get the money where Toshi wants it sent, and only for three years. Toshi wonders if he's been given a prediction, but doesn't ask.
3- Toshinori spends a lot of time on I-island in his retirement. David is one of the few people he has, after all, and once he is firm in his retirement and official death, Dave is just happy that he's alive and returning his hug to put other thoughts out of his mind for a while. Only a while, though- Dave knows the power vacuum and crime surge that's ramping up. Toshinori can't fight it anymore, but he's strategic and has a lot of intel on villains in japan, and the two of them make plans and send support to the heroes back home. It helps, a little bit.
4- But Toshinori can’t stay on I-island, even if he feels most helpful there, even if Dave and Melissa’s guest room is all but his. Nana died for Japan, and he sacrificed a lot for it too, and it’s easier to keep an eye on things there. So a lot of movement back and forth. He didn’t die after three years. Sir makes his own agency, and it’s strained but not without contact. Toshinori is tired. The world keeps changing and won’t let him rest. But, one visit to I-island, Melissa mentions that there’s a new student at the academy, a freshman who’s quirkless and from Japan. Izuku Midoriya, she thinks he and her uncle would get along.
5- so, the ripples: Because of increased crime, Inko and Izuku leave Japan to go join Hisashi working abroad, which is stressful but eventually Izuku wins entrance into I-island’s academy, the closest he could get to heroics as no schools near his new home accepted quirkless students and his parents refused to return to Japan. Endeavor, thrust into the Number One position six years early, has much less time to be home and Shoto is glad. When Fuyumi turns eighteen, she quietly asks her father for an allowance and an apartment away to watch her brothers in. Enji, two years into this change, agrees. Bakugou and Tsubasa are the two students from Aldera Middle to make it to UA High- they haven’t seen Deku since he moved away in other school, and haven’t thought about him for a couple of years. They’re close, though, as the orphanage Tsubasa lived in closed due to lack of funding and Tsubasa’s been crashing on his couch more often than not, which is not exactly a healthy environment but is better than going in the nomu soup. Mina comes across a giant man who’s sniffing around insisting that he smells All Might, that he's still here, still alive, he needs to find him. Mina watches him investigate a building that looks run down and abandoned until a short old man walks by, says he's dead, but the building is where he used to live, historic location, can’t torn down for it. The giant keeps insisting that he’s alive, the scent fresh. Mina tells him she wishes All Might was alive too, but she going to be a hero inspired by- the man lashes out, angry, and Kirishima can’t help but watches as the old man moves quickly, and the next thing he knows he’s sitting next to Mina as the police drive the giant away and the EMTs look over his friend, who’s alright but going to have a much more heroic scar than him. They promise to be heroes and have each other’s back. When they get to UA, their class looks different, fewer people each year take the entrance exam, though still more than most other schools. Hawks is exhausted as his rise through the top heroes is planned to emulate All Might’s. He had to make top ten before he was twenty, to beat Endeavor’s record, and sometime between his twenty fifth and twenty sixth birthday he knows he’s going to hit number one, burning through more and more official cases to get the number he needs. It’s not hard, with crime rates rising, even if it’s not going up as sharply as David and Toshi feared. The Yakuza is even making a comeback, as much as vigilante Stendhal tries to fight it, and Chisaki Kai’s sister is not allowed to leave the family to get married, too much risk. She resents this and slips some secrets to Giran, who’s curious about her adopted brother’s quirks- a shame his old patron isn’t around anymore, but he's got an annoying nineteen year old Tomura upstairs in his loft who tracked him down years ago, leading a mostly unresponsive Kurogiri by the hand, demanding to know why he’s been abandoned and how to fix the only caretaker he has left.
