Where Have You Seen Loki Season 2's X-5 Actor Before?
This post contains spoilers for the season premiere of "Loki."
"Loki" is back this week, and along with the return of Norse trickster god Loki (Tom Hiddleston), agent Mobius (Owen Wilson), and the rest of the Time Variance Authority, the show's premiere also sees the introduction of a few new key characters. Among them? Ke Huy Quan's helpful, tech-savvy Ouroboros (or O.B.) and X-5, a mysterious new TVA agent played by Rafael Casal. And it's the latter who is particularly intriguing.
So far, we haven't seen X-5 do much besides question whether jet skis are part of the sacred timeline, but the character already seems to be an agitating force within the organization. He's also quite possibly poised to become a recognizable Marvel villain. After all, a featurette for the second season had a couple bits of footage from behind the scenes that showed him in a TVA jumpsuit, as if he was being held prisoner. So that should be interesting to watch play out. But there's more.
As /Film's Sandy Schaefer pointed out back in July, the trailer for "Loki" includes a poster for a movie called "Zaniac!" which fans have tied to Casal's character via leaks and speculation. Zaniac is a noteworthy character in Marvel Comics, though he bears little resemblance to X-5. The character was an evil entity that possessed the man who would become Jack the Ripper, and later took over slasher actor Brad Wolfe.
Ahead of the show's premiere, Casal has been credited by several outlets as Brad Wolfe, not X-5, so it seems likely that he could play out some form of the Zaniac plot this season. Regardless of Casal's true role in the show, though, he's an excellent multi-hyphenate artist whose past works deserve attention.
If X-5 looks familiar, it's likely you recognize Casal from "Blindspotting," a fantastic 2018 musical comedy-drama that he co-wrote with longtime creative partner Daveed Diggs (yes, of "Hamilton" fame). "Blindspotting" was a labor of love for Casal and Diggs, who also produced the film about two best friends living in Oakland, California whose lives are disrupted by the broken policing system. As serious as that sounds, "Blindspotting" is also laugh-out-loud funny, and Casal is a totally charming standout as hot-headed Miles.
The performer reprised the role for Starz's "Blindspotting" TV show, which ran for two seasons and was recently canceled. A criminally underseen hidden gem of a series, "Blindspotting" takes place after the film and puts the focus on Miles' girlfriend, Ashley Rose (Jasmine Cephas Jones), as she parents the pair's young mixed-race son in a racist world, all while Miles is behind bars. Despite his character's incarceration, Casal still appears in the show frequently and his hilarious, soulful character is a fan favorite. If you're looking for a thoughtful, entertaining, dynamic watch – or just want to see what Casal's made of – you can't do much better than either iteration of "Blindspotting."
The performer has also made a name for himself in other projects, including several collaborations with Diggs. A poet and rapper in addition to his acting creds, Casal appeared on three seasons of "Def Poetry Jam" on HBO, released a mixtape with Diggs in 2010, and contributed to the soundtracks for "Blindspotting," including in the catchy (and foulmouthed, fair warning) song "Easy Come, Easy Go." He reunited with Diggs in the acclaimed 2020 miniseries "The Good Lord Bird," a wild historical fiction series led by a fiery Ethan Hawke. Casal and Diggs even started a public theater project called Bars Medley, which remixed classic literature into musical performances.
Other on-screen works of Casal's include a supporting role in the 2019 Hugh Jackman flick "Bad Education" (he played the love interest of Jackman's closeted character) and a multi-episode turn in the "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" revival. Casal played a ringmaster named Mr. Tophat in the reboot of the classic, kid-friendly horror series. Next up, Casal is appearing in "Wildcat," a biography of Southern Gothic author Flannery O'Connor that's directed and co-written by Hawke. The X-5 actor plays a character in one of O'Connor's short stories in the movie, which premiered at Telluride but hasn't been released to the public yet.
Whether X-5 is a frustrated TVA employee, a secret evil entity, a movie actor, or something else entirely, it's exciting to see an artist as talented and versatile as Casal take the stage in a major Marvel series. You can catch his next moves on Disney+, where new episodes of "Loki" stream Thursdays at 9pm ET.

The Deep by clppng
[Intro] Our mothers were pregnant African women thrown overboard while crossing the Atlantic Ocean on slave ships. We were born breathing water as we did in the womb. We built our home on the sea floor, unaware of the two-legged surface dwellers until their world came to destroy ours. With cannons, they searched for oil beneath our cities. Their greed and recklessness forced our uprising. Tonight, we remember.
[Verse 1: Daveed Diggs] Y'all remember how deep it go Started from the bottom Y'all remember how deep it go 'Fore y'all had to come back, deep Y'all remember when it used to be deep So deep, so, so deep, ayy When y'all swim up out yo' mama while y'all mama was asleep So deep, so, so deep, ayy And y'all remember when y'all had the dance floor lit, dark No two-step, deep, y'all don't even sweat, deep As deep as it gets Dreaming dead asleep and keeping time Y'all heartbeat, deep, y'all heartbeat, deep And all the fishes had they eyes bugged out Cause y'all dancing underwater and y'all don't get wet And the dark smelled sweet and y'all tails touch reef Y'all feed off the bottom, but now y'all remember
[Chorus: Daveed Diggs] Y'all remember Y'all remember
[Interlude 1] Pressure outside the vehicle: 832.2 bars
[Verse 2: Daveed Diggs] Y'all remember when the deep got hot when y'all move on up How y'all used to argue 'bout the water getting warmer Still y'all loved a little bit of light up in the deep So deep, so, so deep, ayy Y'all remember saying how it couldn't be them two legs Cause y'all came from two legs And y'all mamas would've loved y'all if they could've breathed But they wasn't ready for the deep So deep, so, so deep, ayy Y'all remember when the first blast came And the beat fell off and the dreams got woke And the light bent bad and the fishes belly up And them coral castles crumbled 'cause they wasn't quite enough And conversation used to break like the floor quake Like the bleached bones and the fin friends fled from they home But the blasts wouldn't stop 'cause they wanted black gold And them no-gills had to feel it 'cause they couldn't be told
[Chorus: Daveed Diggs] Y'all remember Y'all remember
[Interlude 2] Ocean salinity: 35 PSU. Water pH: 7.91
[Verse 3: Daveed Diggs] Y'all remember when the regime changed That no pleas, no calm seas, let the water rise So deep, so, so deep Oil slick upon the sleeper was an awful thing to realize If the two legs wanna wake the dead They gon' have to bring more fire, y'all is closer to the earth So deep and y'all was talking how to get up in they heads And got to bein' real inspired circumstances of the birth Has got y'all feeling like an army, better yet a navy And they gone gave y'all the blessing now y'all going crazy They live with green up on the surface but they ain't deep That pistol shrimp could knock a two-leg off his feet Y'all perfecting the steam void to rip up they ships They using sonar as second language, y'all fluent with it And all the dreamers is woke now, but nightmares swim But everybody hear that "bloop" know y'all coming for them
[Chorus: Daveed Diggs] Y'all remember Y'all remember
[Interlude 3] Surface water temperature: 308 Kelvin
[Verse 4: Daveed Diggs] Y'all remember when the call went out, ayy No deep, no more deep, sunshine Y'all remember when the call went out, ayy No deep, no more deep, sunshine Y'all remember feeling wind up on your skin No deep, no more deep, sunshine Y'all remember how it burned in the beginning No deep, ride on 'em, ride on 'em, ride on 'em Y'all remember seeing sun across the surface On the day that y'all first came up out the water, so, so deep How the breaking of the surface showed the sky without a border And the air was so much hotter, so, so deep How the woke dreamer screamed and it rose tides And the waves stretched up like a mountain high And the no-gills gasped and they closed eyes And they prayed to they gods and they asked why And then y'all cried too 'cause y'all recognized Mama In the faces of the ones that y'all would terrorize They were sisters and brothers They were the babies born up out the water Not connected to each other Not in knowledge of the one drop But they had to learn today Y'all had one shot, let the sun burn today Let them feel the dark even deeper today Make a two-leg a believer today Let them know that they done woke a sleeper from a sleep So deep That y'all been dancin' without any feet, so, so deep Here's the nerve that they struck with a blast That they broke with a drill, that they burnt with the gas Y'all remember, so deep, sunshine, ride on 'em Y'all remember, so deep, sunshine, ride on 'em Y'all remember, so deep, sunshine, ride on 'em Y'all remember when y'all had to let 'em breathe Ride on 'em, ayy

I didn't realise you were a snowpiercer fan! I'd love to hear more of your thoughts on the series. I swear hardly anyone watched it which is so sad!
oh man I LOVED snowpiercer. like. truly a show made for me with all my favourite tropes, character types, and genres. but yeah alright quickfire snowpiercer thoughts let's gooo
josie and layton were so fucking boring sorry I know that was the point but I literally was so bored I also hate love triangleish situations where it's a woc vs a white woman so yeah hated that soooo much
literally best chemistry a cast of a drama have ever had. a bottleneck show like that lives and dies on dynamics and the dynamics in this show were all so compelling. til and layton, melanie and ruth, miss audrey and zarah, Alex and wilford, even fucking pike and ruth were crazy compelling. everyone was so compelling. (except, you know)
I really liked how it catered to people who loved the film, but also distinguished itself very clearly in that the visuals and vibe were lifted from the film but the story did its own thing
I fucking love the production design for the garden cart and the night cart and all the carts in the different classes
kinda loved how everytime you'd have a question about how the logistics of the train worked, the show had your back. I never felt watching it that I didnt understand how everything worked.
Loved how it leaned into the body horror with Josie's sub-plot. Insaneeee
Uhhhh the twist of the second train? Blew. My. Mind. to this day it's one of my favourite twists ever it was so well done, and the way that gets built on with the democracy and piracy plot lines is so good
I loved zarah so much. Main character of the show 2 me
I also loved how the show actually deals with what being on a train forever does to people, mentally
Also loved the little references throughout the series to other environmental disaster stories like Day After Tomorrow
loved how at the end of the world there was so many bisexuals and lesbians. amen
Arguably my most unpopular opinion is that Melanie was boring as a main character. The white feminism of her character being pitted against layton's struggle for liberation pisseddddd me off (which I know was the point but still). I liked her more when she left and came back as a more secondary character. though her and Bennet were so hot. why lie
speaking of hot um yeah daveed diggs covered in blood many times. send tweet
and i miss this show every day and I'll never forgive Warner Bros for fucking over everyone in this show the way they did. Hugest irony ever that a show about how fucked up late capitalism is got killed like that 💀

The Little Mermaid Live Action
Tumblr media
I’m so freaking prepared for this movie and it’s not even funny!!!!!!!!!!! I’ve watched the trailer so many times since the full trailer was released.
The original Little Mermaid movie was and is still one of my all time favorite Disney movies. And now just seeing in come to life is amazing. I can already tell you I’m gonna be in tears probably halfway through the movie.
There are probably a million reasons why I’m so excited but I’m only going to talk about my top 3.
Tumblr media
Halle Bailey: She such a beautiful woman and a wonderful singer. I heard her singing only a few times before, but when I really heard her voice was during the Disney World 50th Anniversary and she sang “Can You Feel Love Tonight” and she has such a beautiful singing voice. I also read this article somewhere online about Jodi Benson (the original Ariel) and her opinion about Halle playing Ariel. Jodi Benson has been very supportive of Halle as she plays Ariel and was there when Halle received backlash about her playing Ariel. So, Jodi Benson talked about how it doesn’t matter who you are, what you look, or where your from, it’s about the spirit of the character is what’s important. I 100% agree with her. Halle Bailey is going to do a wonderful job by bring one of the most iconic Disney princesses to life.
Tumblr media
2. The Music and New Songs: Can we just take a moment and talk about Lin-Manuel Miranda?!?! As everyone should know, he wrote the Broadway musicals “In The Heights” and “Hamilton” and has also written music for other Disney movies like “Encanto” and “Moana”. Lin-Manuel is also a big Disney fan and he also named his son after Sebastian in the little mermaid. And now he gets to work with Alan Menken (the original music composer) and he was the one who inspired Lin-Manuel to compose music. He basically gets to work with his hero and that’s amazing!!!! I’ve also read somewhere that Lin-Manuel might be Chef Louis in the movie.
Ok, now the music. We all have to admit that the original soundtrack slaps!!!! They are classics and masterpieces. I can’t wait to listen to it again in the live action. I have a feeling some of the songs might be a tad different from the original, but that doesn’t bother me. The have done the same thing in all the other Disney live action movies and I love those movies.
I’m really excited to hear these new songs in the movie. As I said earlier, Lin-Manuel Miranda got up work with Alan Menken and wrote 4 new songs. Can’t wait to hear them and listen to them like a million times once the soundtrack comes out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. The Actors: Besides Halle Bailey as Ariel, I think they did an amazing job with the cast. I mean, you could have picked better than these actors and actresses to play these roles.
Awkwafina as Scuttle: If you didn’t know who she is, Awkwafina was in “Jumamji: The Next Level” and “Chang-Shi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”. She is a really funny actress and always makes me laugh. I think she will make a great Scuttle.
Daveed Diggs as Sebastian: I think everyone had a feeling that he would play Sebastian before the trailer even came out. He was in “Hamilton” with Lin-Manuel Miranda and also rapped a whole bunch in the musical. I read somewhere that he might rap in the movie and that makes me happy. He honestly fits the role of Sebastian perfectly.
Melissa McCarthy as Ursula: Just like Awkwafina, Melissa McCarthy also makes me laugh as well. She was in the movie “Life of the Party” and Netflix “Thunder Force”. I’m excited to see her bring out her inner diva while playing Ursula.
Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric: First of all, he is extremely cute and hot. When I first saw him I was like blushing like crazy. Also, he was in “A Dog’s Way Home” and the tv show “World On Fire”. I’m excited to see him play Prince Eric. Another thing to point out is that Prince Eric was my Disney Prince crush when I was little and that crush it starting up again.
Tumblr media
Those are my top 3 reasons why I am excited about the Live Action Little Mermaid. I won’t be able to wait any longer as it approaches theaters.

What is a real person?
Because I think that's an underrated aspect of the discussion of RPF. Note that I'm not talking about the morality of shipping or anything, just what qualifies something for the #RPF tag in your opinion.
What makes a fictional character? Is it a distinct personal history, a unique name, adopted personality traits not shared by the person performing those traits? Some examples:
Tim Allen, the comedian, is presumably a real person. As is Jerry Seinfeld, the comedian. Tim Taylor and Jerry Seinfeld the TV characters are not real. Dan Rather, the newscaster, he's real. Stephen Colbert the right-wing parody from the Colbert Report? Stephen Colbert from the Late Show? Elvira? Those are debatable, and may not break the same way.
Tom Brady is a real person, and Yuri Katsuki is a fictional character. The Undertaker? Wrestling has writers and storylines and people playing a character, seems fictional to me. Does "John Cena/Dwayne The Rock Johnson" vary in reality with whether you tag it with #FastandFuriousActors vs #WWE? Yes, you can argue about basing it on real vs fictional personalities, but I doubt anyone knows what either of those guys acts like when the cameras are off.
Some Minecraft Youtubers will do 2-year storylines about feuds between friends, complete with secret betrayals, planned events, and scripted cutscenes made by outside animators. Does that make those streamers' in-game personas fictional? What if they're on a server with someone else who literally just builds and chats, no preplanning or persona at all? Is one of them real and the other fictional? Because that gets weird if they interact.
Historical RPF may be even worse. Robin Hood, for example, is fictional. There was a real Robin, but the current understanding is based off an amalgamation of folk tales, themselves based off a mix of real and fictional people and situations. I'm not going to call that real. Abraham Lincoln, clearly real. We've altered our perception of him over the years, but there's a real person there. Thomas Jefferson, black rapper played by Daveed Diggs? Is that legally distinct enough to not qualify as a real person, because Slave Rapist Jefferson would probably object to saying they're the same dude. Cleopatra was by all reports a middlingly attractive woman and a vicious political strategist. If you base her off of a movie where she's a hot sex-fiend with 2 brain cells who slept her way to the top, is that changing her enough to not be RPF? Because I don't want that to be the solution.
And that's before we get into bands like TaTu who are playing roles, reality show stars who clearly are faking everything for the cameras, real people cameoing in scripted media(Bruce Willis in Ocean's 12)...there's an infinite number of edge cases.
I don't know the answer to this. There is a line between real and fictional, there has to be, but every time I look closely at it, it gets blurrier. Anyone else have thoughts?
