Career path paved in gold: High-paying college majors
Among the many considerations for college education is a return of investment, whether in the form of pay scale or job satisfaction. Generally speaking, college degrees provide the holder with a higher chance of landing a better, more profitable job. Higher education consultants are often quick to point out that those with college degrees often land higher-paying jobs than those with only high school diplomas—by 81 percent as of 2011, according to the authors of College Majors Handbook with Real Career Paths and Payoffs. Image credit: webdesigncompany.net However, the authors of the aforementioned book also point out that there are about 15 majors that earn substantially more than the median pay of $53,976 (as of 2010). These are as follows: 1. Pre-med ($100,000) 2. Computer systems engineering ($85,000) 3. Pharmacy ($84,000) 4. Chemical engineering ($80,000) 5. Electrical and electronics engineering ($75,000) 6. Mechanical engineering ($75,000) 7. Aerospace and aeronautical engineering ($74,000) Image credit: fastweb.com 8. Computer science ($73,000) 9. Industrial engineering ($73,000) 10. Physics and astronomy ($72,200) 11. Civil engineering ($70,000) 12. Electrical and electronics engineering technology ($65,000) 13. Economics ($63,300) 14. Financial management ($63,000) 15. Mechanical engineering technology ($63,000) Image credit kfarchitects.net At present, engineering majors make up the bulk of those who land higher-paying jobs. David Charlow: What not to do when applying to college
David Charlow Image credit: amazonaws.com Anytime now, admission experts like David Charlow will be deluged with a plethora of college applications for the class of 2017. Before them is the great task of reading through piles of application essays and picking the ones that did good in highlighting their academic achievements and extra-curricular work. But admission experts also note that from among the hundreds of applications that they go through every day, there are also those that stand out—for the wrong reason. The following are two things that admission experts note could cost students their college ticket: Writing about the wrong school One of the classic mistakes a student can make is to use a generic essay for different schools. And such mistake can cost them an Ivy League education, according to David Charlow and other seasoned admission officers. If only students take some time to know about each university and demonstrate that knowledge in their application essays, then they can avoid mistakes such as stating that they are Big Red fans when applying for Columbia University. David Charlow Image credit: radicalparenting.com Being someone else In college applications, admission experts notice not only the “big” things—academic awards, published works, community recognition—but the “small” things, too, like how the list of extracurricular activities increase significantly during the senior year. Although some experts do not necessarily doubt the authenticity of such list, most question the candidate’s sudden dedication to multiple causes. What experts want to see is not a laundry list of commitments, but an activity (or two) that the student is truly passionate about. Students, in their desire to go to college, sometimes get desperate in their application and include items that can jeopardize their chances. This can be avoided with help from David Charlow. David Charlow: How to effectively write a college admission essay
Known for mapping out comprehensive college planning programs, David Charlow of College Capture is dedicated to building bridges that will connect students to the educational success they have been dreaming of. To do so, he assists them in every step of the arduous college application process which, at times, includes writing admission essays.
David Charlow. Image Credit: www.womanaroundtown.com With this said, the following are some tips on how applicants can write an effective college admission essay: • Say no to “generic” essays. Hopefuls should never write essays that could easily be conceived as written by other applicants. Admission essays should be, among many others, personal, telling the schools about who the applicants truly are. Everything written in the essays should reveal the personality of the applicants and their unique situation.
David Charlow. Image Credit: chapmancac.files.wordpress.com • Researching is a must. David Charlow firmly believes that committee members are seeking applicants who fit the mission and vision of the school. By knowing this, students can tailor their essay topic in a way that it shows how they possess the same ideals as the institution. • Focus on the specifics. Students should never simply repeat information that were already indicated in their application form. The essay should include specific incidents and concrete examples that will testify for and emphasize the positive things that were written in the form.
David Charlow. Image Credit: www.fastweb.com Charlow believes that the road to college success is never easy. But through diligence and perseverance, students can and will find a way to get the education they want, need, and deserve. David Charlow and seeking college financial aid
David Charlow and other college admission experts at College Capture agree that nowadays, many students and parents struggle to make ends meet due to the rising cost of a college education. According to USAToday.com, tuition fees for some public universities reach a total of nearly $50,000 for a four-year course. This continuous rise in college tuition fees and other education-related expenses makes scholarships and financial aid necessary for most families.
David Charlow image credit thebulldoglife.com Applying for financial aid should not be a difficult task. Since there are many types of financial aid, students and parents must first learn to properly and thoroughly conduct a research to see in which types of scholarship or financial aid programs they qualify. Financial aid experts, like David Charlow, agree that applying for a scholarship or grant is better than a student loan because students don’t have to worry about repaying the money once they graduate.
David Charlow image credit degreedirectory.com Another important step in applying for financial aid is accomplishing the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) form. By filing out this form, students become candidates for different types of state aid. According to admissions experts, students must be mindful of the changes in the law before filling out and submitting the form. After submitting the form, students must take the time to apply for financial aid programs where they qualify.
David Charlow image credit college-lists.com In applying for financial aid, students must not hesitate to ask for help in finding a suitable financial aid program or in accomplishing their requirements. They must also remember to submit their requirements in an organized manner because this step will serve as their first impression to financial aid officers. David Charlow is a financial aid expert who worked at Columbia University. Learn more at www.reducingcollegecosts.com.
