SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS (2023) Grade: C-
Drop off from the first movie. Went away from the main character. Bad guys were weak, uncreative and boring. Not many kids think it's funny that it's Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu on the screen.

Shazam! Fury Of The Gods
“Shazam! Fury Of The Gods” is a generic and sad entry in a pointless continuity.
Billy Batson is about to turn 18 and grappling with the idea that he might lose his new family. Everyone seems to be moving on with their lives and Billy’s fear of abandonment resurfaces. While he’s desperately trying to force his family together, two daughters of the titan, Atlas, steal the wizard Shazam’s broken staff from a museum. They want to reclaim the world that was stolen from them and believe that Billy doesn’t deserve his powers.
If you read my review for 2019′s “Shazam!”, you’ll know that I wasn’t as positive about that movie as other people. While everyone else was praising that movie for shaking up the then bleak tone of the DCEU, I still felt like the movie lacked substance. A lot of that criticism carries over to this film for me. To be honest, I think this movie is slightly worse than the last. For starters, Zachary Levi loses all of the charm he had from the first movie. While in the first movie, he comes off as a kid experiencing the novelty of having powers for the first time, he comes off as an idiot in this film. Asher Angel is barely in this movie, so we’re stuck with this dumbed-down version of Billy for the majority of the film. Also, it feels like Zachary Levi and Asher Angel are playing two completely different characters. Asher Angel feels more grown up, which seems like the right play since Billy should be more mature in this movie. He should still be a kid at heart, but he’s grappling with more mature situations in this movie. When Billy switches from Asher Angel to Zachary Levi, it feels like the character just gets stupid for no reason. Zachary Levi plays Billy like he hasn’t aged at all since the last movie. The superhero siblings were extremely forgettable to me. The movie barely makes an attempt at connecting the kids to their adult counterparts and so they come off as separate characters most of the time as well. Only this time, neither counterparts get any character development. Jack Dylan Grazer was fun in the last movie, but in this movie, he’s gratingly one-note. The romance between him and Rachel Zegler’s character came off as extremely forced, which sucks since that’s an important part of the story. Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu feel like wasted potential in this movie because they’re so bland as villains. Now, this movie heavily focuses on comedy, but I thought it was weak with this film as well. There were only one or two jokes that actually got a laugh out of me, but everything else was pathetically predictable. It hurts to have to be so critical of this movie because I feel like there was genuinely good intention behind the making of this movie. The problem is that the problems in this movie are too apparent to not notice. I wanted a good time, but ended up getting a mess of a movie.

'Shazam! Fury of the Gods' Movie Review
"An okay mix of silliness and action" Check our #'Shazam! Fury of the Gods Review @shazammovie #ShazamFuryOfTheGods #JustSayTheWord!
2019’s Shazam! was a breath of fresh air in the tediously grim DC cinematic universe, and was a light, kid-friendly comedy that anyone could enjoy. In Shazam! Fury of the Gods, David F. Sandberg brings back Billy Batson and family for more superhero adventures, but decidedly fewer shenanigans. This time, Batson (Asher Angel) and his alter ego (Zachary Levi) and the rest of the shazamming crew are…

Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023, dir. David F. Sandberg) - review by Rookie-Critic
Tumblr media
The first Shazam! was a very funny, if not a little messy and tonally inconsistent, take on a superhero film. It wanted to be a goofy comedy, but still felt like it needed to adhere to a trappings of the genre and being a part of a larger connected universe. Fury of the Gods is basically just a lesser version of the original, with everything about the first film dialed up, which has its pros and cons. The pros are that everything that was funny in the first film is still funny here and the theme of found family still rings very true. On the former, Zachary Levi brings a ton of charm to the screen, and the whole "child in a super powered adult's body" shtick is mostly endearing. We're also getting a ton of that style from the other family members this go around, as the end of the last film (spoilers for the first Shazam! here, but if you've seen any promotional material for this one this shouldn't come as a surprise) saw all the children in the foster family receiving Shazam powers. Adam Brody, Meagan Good, Ross Butler, and D. J. Cotrona are all very funny as the aged-up versions of their respective characters, and Grace Caroline Currey, who plays Mary, the eldest of the foster kids, gets the unique privilege of playing both her regular self as well as the Shazam-ified version of her character, and does a pretty great job at both. However, the real superstar of both this and the original film is easily Jack Dylan Grazer, who is a bonafide scene stealer in everything I've seen him in. For all of this film's faults, and there are a decent number of them, I really didn't care as long as Grazer was on screen being hilarious.
Now, the film's biggest pro is also its greatest fault, and that humor that made the first film stand out has a large tendency to feel quite forced in this one. Some of the lines feel thrown in out of left field, existing for no other purpose than to attempt at a laugh, and it makes those moments feel more awkward than anything else. Also, I feel as though the filmmakers were very aware that people liked the duo and chemistry between Grazer and Levi in the first film, and sought to capitalize on that, regardless of how much time it sacrificed for both actors' counterparts. Asher Angel, who plays the un-Shazam'd Billy Batson, gets what amounts to maybe 5 minutes of screen time, and the same can be said, albeit less so, for Adam Brody, who plays Grazer's character Freddy Freeman's Shazam-form. There are times in the film where you absolutely would not be blamed for forgetting that Zachary Levi/Billy Batson even is actually a child, because he seems to hardly ever switch back, which hurts the aspect of the film that makes the comedy work: watching Levi act like a child in the body of an adult superhero.
The film also has the same problem as the first in that, for what is by all accounts a comedy, Fury of the Gods takes itself very seriously in bursts, I would say even more so than the first. There are a few moments that are outright dark, and while I'm not one to generally turn my nose up at clashing tones in movies, it is so stark of a difference between the comedic and the dramatic that it was hard not to just be confused. I found myself asking who they thought their target audience was multiple times. A lot of the drama surrounds the film's antagonists, played by Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu, and while they are both amazing actresses who are clearly outclassing everyone else in the room with them, they sometimes feel like they're from a different movie, much like Mark Strong's villain from the first Shazam!, albeit less so. Taking the good with the bad, though, I didn't hate it. The Shazam! films ask you to check your brain at the door, and I did, and because I did, I found Fury of the Gods to be a harmlessly good time. I can see this one being divisive, but if you enjoyed the first one, I think there is enough similarity between the two to keep you interested.
Score: 6/10
Currently only in theaters.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023) - REVIEW
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS
Shazam and his superpowered siblings face off against a trio of Gods looking to reclaim the magic of their father and seeking revenge against mankind for imprisoning them.
youtube
Judging solely from the trailers, Shazam! Fury of the Gods practically screamed out 'standard sequel' to me and given the competition out than when it comes to superhero content, my expectations weren't high. The first Shazam surprised me in a number of respects; the DCEU wasn't in the best shape following the Justice League debacle and even the trailers didn't do much to stoke my enthusiasm at the time. But Shazam did surprise me by its willingness to take its time to set up the concept and the central story surrounding young Billy and Shazam turned out to be very funny indeed. While Fury of the Gods isn't quite the surprise of its predecessor, it still managed to surprise me again by being a lot of fun in its own right. Is it the type of sequel that's going to be notable for improving on the first? Not for me because as fun as it is, Fury of the Gods does undercook parts of its story that should be driving it forward thematically and where the meat of the story should be.
Tumblr media
It may be a strange thing to observe, but Shazam is pretty much just focused on the superhero element of its story at the expense of anything else which is a surprise given the unique set up of these characters. In its defense, a lot of humour is played out and works because of the unique set up but it lacks a lot of dramatic satisfaction by not having much of a story for its lead characters outside of their alter egos. It's briefly mentioned that Billy is set to 'age out' of the foster system, another sibling is hiding their sexuality while another is facing the prospect of getting a job ... but none of it plays too much of a part as you go along. It's a strange decision and one that robs Fury of the Gods more of a weighty story to rival the first. It isn't enough to sink the film as a whole because it is a generally breezy superhero affair that will keep you entertained but the only question is in the long run does it provide enough satisfaction?
Tumblr media
The describing of a movie like this as 'fun' can sometimes sound like faint praise but it shouldn't be underestimated either. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever had a tragic undercurrent while Ant-Man Quantumania had a set purpose but neither of them were as fun as Fury of the Gods. There are plenty of laughs scattered throughout and I never once got bored of scenes between Jack Dylan Grazer's Freddy and Djimon Hounsou's wizard. Helen Mirren steals the show as Hespera and is clearly having a good time playing a God alongside a vengeful Lucy Liu and conflicted Rachel Zegler. The set pieces are fun and the visual effects look strong. Don't come in expecting anything too heavy or a sequel to redefine the genre and there's no reason you can't have a good time with this.
Tumblr media
VERDICT
Shazam! Fury of the Gods is a sequel that isn't going to set the world on fire nor is it a disappointment. While it falls short of improving upon the first film, Fury of the Gods is still a breezy and fun ride that you can have a good time with which sometimes is all that you need.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is not the Avengers
This movie was a mess. It felt like it had 10 different storylines in one. It would start a storyline and then never finish what happened. The end fight made no sense and just felt rushed and I honestly did not feel the emotion in it. Yes, it did feel like the continuation of the first movie. I felt like the movie did have some funny moments but has way too many cheesy moments that felt forced…
