The Diplomat is sort of The Thick of It meets (a bit of) Downton Abbey meets The West Wing meets a very heavy dose of Spooks, which, of course, means I am in complete love with it. Also, it’s got a main character with messy hair who loves wearing black pants daily and has her hands in her pockets all the time, there was no way I wasn’t going to love her and it.
Also, bloody excellent portrayal of a long-term relationship on the rocks between people who have also been working together professionally for a long time. The way you know how the other person thinks, acts, and desires. And the way they managed to write some quiet beauty into the private scenes in between the politics and the shenanigans.
I have a feeling the median age of tumblr might just be a bit too much on the young side for The Diplomat to ever turn into a big thing here, but...if any of you liked the shows I named above, and haven’t seen this one...give it a try.

One Dress a Day Challenge
The Men of September
Carnival Row (episode 6, "Unaccompanied Fae") / David Gyasi as Agreus Astrayon
I featured Imogen's red dress from this scene as one of my first costumes for this project. Agreus is also beautifully dressed, but even more than his clothing, I want to call attention to the prosthetics that turn the actor into a faun: the horns, the hooves (love the fancy detailing!), and the padded legs. A couple of the pictures above are taken from a different episode, and I'm not sure whether he's wearing a different waistcoat or whether the color just looks different in different light. I also like how he's tilted his hat at a rakish angle over his horns (and how it matches the angle of Imogen's hat).
The cut of the suit itself seems modeled on clothing of the 1900s. See the picture below at left, which is dated 1906. I've included a picture of Agreus in a different costume because it was the only full-body view I could find.

Carnival Row has so many problems with taking homophobia and racism analogies and giving them to white, cis - mostly - straight actors.
But that makes Mr. Agreus role even more powerful. Seeing a black man, playing a fantasy creature, not being allowed to be in love with a human woman... who happens to be white. In victorian England. And you only need half a braincell to realize that this isn't about horns and wings.
And this makes his lines so powerful. Everytime Agreus talks about the privileges white human people take for granted, while he will never be able to because he is black a fae-born, I nearly fall from my chair. The actor is just *chef kiss*
Them casting a black actor for the role, saves the whole show imo. If they would have also casted a white man for the role... YIKES. I only wish they would have casted a queer actor for Philos role. Because his role is the homophobia metaphor. So thumbs up for having a pansexual actress playing a pansexual fae, but the whole show would ahve worked better if the actor of Philo also happened to be queer. Because then i wouldn't cringe so much when a straight actor, has a metaphorical coming out scene, followed by "i am proud of you."
People trying to push him back into the closet, was still on point tough
