Iron Fist Season 2 Teaser Analysis

The Marvel gods have answered our prayers-- we are getting Iron Fist Season 2 next! This makes sense for every possible reason: it directly follows up on Danny and Colleen’s appearances in Luke Cage Season 2 and Misty’s leap between the two shows, and it allows for all of the original Netflix shows to get second seasons before moving on to phase three. (The Punisher came late, so we’ll accept its second season coming after Daredevil’s third.) Danny’s story this season will be partly informed by Matt’s sacrifice, so it makes sense to tell it before Matt reappears. Plus, these characters are on the cusp of so many exciting things that waiting any longer for the second season would have been pure torture. Matt can stay “dead” for a little bit longer. He’ll be fine.

With that in mind, the Iron Fist panel at SDCC did its job perfectly, by giving us a lot of information... but also not much. It revealed that the show will air on September 7th, in keeping with the new schedule of three months between releases. It confirmed last year’s announcement that Misty will be taking her rightful place in the Iron Fist world (she debuted in Danny’s introductory series in the comics, and has been an Iron Fist character for most of her existence, so it’s about time!). It revealed that we will be getting a Steel Serpent plotline-- which we’d assumed, but is still really, really exciting. It revealed that Alice Eve will be playing-- of all people-- Typhoid Mary, who is a Daredevil character! And it revealed that Danny will be taking to the streets of New York for the first time as a real superhero.

This last revelation is the focus of the first teaser, which-- like most teasers-- gives us barely any information. But we’re still going to geek out about it.

It wouldn’t be a Marvel/Netflix trailer without an aerial shot of Manhattan...

The badassery of this teaser is offset by how adorable and non-threatening Danny’s shoes are-- which completely, 100% fits the Iron Fist tradition.

One detail we’ve always loved about Danny is that unlike many of Marvel’s street-level characters, he’s not really a NYC superhero (and we’ve discussed this before, but I’m going to discuss it again, because that’s how much it fascinates me). His primary city will always be K’un-Lun, and though he spends most of his time on Earth, K’un-Lun is where his heart lies. Even in modern comics, after all this time, he views his trips to K’un-Lun as journeys home. Thus, he has a very complicated relationship with New York City. He ends up stuck there under painful circumstances and has no choice but to try to build a life for himself there. In early Iron Fist comics an extreme distinction was made between the Iron Fist and Danny Rand identities; eight issues pass before we even see him take off his mask for the first time.

Danny: “For the past decade, I have been little more than a living weapon-- the pride of K’un Lun. Your world holds nothing but bitter memories for me and yet I cannot return to K’un Lun for nine years. The one man who knew how to enter the city at other than the appointed times... is dead.”

Lee: “What of the man named Daniel Rand, Iron Fist? Surely the world offers him something.”

Danny: “And who is this Daniel Rand, professor? I’ve never taken the time to find out, I fear.”

Colleen: “[...] Maybe it’s time you took off your mask and started finding out about that Rand fella. You might like him.”

Marvel Premiere #22 by Tony Isabella, Arvell Jones, and George Rouses

This huge separation between Danny’s identities is a quirk of his very early appearances, and as later comics have dug deeper into his childhood in K’un-Lun, it has become diminished within the standard Iron Fist continuity. But the fact remains that Danny’s connection to NYC (as represented here by his Daniel Rand identity) is basically nonexistent when he first arrives on Earth, and is something that he builds up slowly over time. He finds a certain amount of appeal in New York City, mostly through the close friendships he forms there, but as the years pass he still feels like an outsider, caught between two worlds, longing to return to K’un-Lun. (Eventually, his relationship with K’un-Lun becomes complicated too... but that’s a topic for another post.) He becomes a New York hero out of necessity.

In the Netflix shows, we have witnessed the same process. Danny comes to New York in pursuit of what turns out to be revenge. He struggles through tremendous identity issues-- he tries to rediscover who he is as Danny Rand, and then as Iron Fist, and then tries to find a way to reconcile these separate identities. Then, when he tries to return home (with Colleen! We need to mention how cool that is), he discovers that something has happened to K’un-Lun. That mystery has informed all of his subsequent plotlines. He is convinced that K’un-Lun has been destroyed, and the burden of that perceived failure haunts him. However, in The Defenders the Hand seem to imply that the city is still there, and by Luke Cage Season 2 Danny seems to have reached that same conclusion, for reasons that remain unclear. We are desperate to find out the truth, because it’s such a mystery, and such an important part of Danny’s story. More to the point-- we need K’un-Lun to still be around. It has been destroyed several times in the comics, and it always comes back, but we need it in this story. It’s a great setting that needs to be explored further, and Danny’s role as the Iron Fist in K’un-Lun and his relationships there are hugely important. It sounds like we will be getting a lot of flashbacks to his childhood and training, particularly focused around his relationship with Davos, but we're hoping for some present-day K’un-Lun too. Returning to the city would allow him to redeem himself for his perceived failures, it would give him the opportunity for further training (as he has not yet reached his full potential as an Immortal Weapon), and it is-- or should be-- a necessary part of his finally coming full circle and cementing his role and identity as the Iron Fist (which would ideally result in his getting the costume too!).

But either way, what matters here is that Danny has, at least for the moment, adopted NYC as a new city to protect. In The Defenders, after his perceived failure, he latches on to New York as a second chance; he failed K’un-Lun, but he won’t fail this other city. This mission is cemented by Matt’s final words to him. As the Iron Fist on Earth, Danny needs a purpose and sense of direction, and Matt’s plea for him to protect New York gives him that. This ties into another facet of Danny that we love, which we’ve talked about before: his status as a “professional hero”. He’s not a superhero in the traditional sense, and this season we’re going to see him figuring out that career path.

The teaser centers around Danny interrupting what is either a standard back-alley mugging or some kind of gang violence. In the comics, Danny’s first big act as a superhero on the streets of New York is combatting the Golden Tigers, a Chinatown-based gang run by a mob boss named Robert Hao, a.k.a. Chaka.

Danny: “--And if Chaka wants to know what’s happened to this month’s drug shipment, you tell him Iron Fist happened! And you tell him that this is only the beginning! I’m going to take his empire apart, bit by slimy bit-- until there’s nothing left! And then I’m going to take Chaka apart the same way!”

Danny works with A.D.A. Bill Hao (Chaka’s brother) and Colleen and Misty to take the gang down. He gets framed for murder (...again) partway through, but all-in-all, it’s not a bad superhero debut. If this season will be bringing in this type of street-level crimefighting, it’s possible the Golden Tigers could make an appearance. An orange tiger symbol has even appeared in some of the promotional material:

During their SDCC appearances, the cast and crew spent a lot of time discussing this season’s stunt choreography. The new stunt coordinator, Clayton Barber, who also worked on Black Panther, explained that he was going for a “punk rock”, old-school kung fu vibe, and cited Jackie Chan’s work as a primary influence. The cast described being pushed to their physical limits (Alice Eve was apparently instructed to “change [her] relationship with pain” for her fights as Typhoid Mary), resulting in most of this season’s stunt-work being performed by the actors themselves.

So first of all... that sounds freaking hardcore, and kudos to everyone involved. We can’t wait to see all of this hard work in action. We loved the fights in Season 1, and if they’re going to be even better in Season 2, then whooo boy, we’re ready! And that’s as it should be. Iron Fist is a martial arts franchise moreso than any of the other shows, and so its fights should be the most technically impressive. Just this small taste of Danny kicking butt in the teaser has us really excited.

In the comics, early-on, Danny tried to have a secret identity for the sake of convenience. It’s never been as much of a thing for him as it has been for, say, Matt Murdock, and he hasn’t had an actual secret identity for a while now. But in this universe, he’s clearly not even bothering. While Iron Fist isn’t a big name in the NYC hero/villain world yet, in Luke Cage Season 2 we learned that Danny is starting to develop a reputation. Turk recognizes him on sight and mentions hearing about his run-in with the Triads. Clearly, that reputation will be growing significantly in this season of Iron Fist, and we’re eager to see how it will mesh with his already well-known civilian identity (which also isn’t nearly as much of a thing in the comics). “Rand Enterprises Co-Chair Has Magical Kung Fu Powers” sounds like a great headline, and Karen can have it for free.

Though of course, we’re expecting Danny to have his costume by the end of the season.

This is a new logo! We liked last season’s a bit better-- it was more dynamic, and this one seems a little sparse. But it reflects differences in this season’s themes/tone, and it’s neat to see that kind of thing integrated into the show’s branding (we'd love for the other shows to do this too). While last’s season’s logo invoked K’un-Lun in its coloring, the background snow/sparks/smoke motif, the typeface, and the integration of the Shou-Lao symbol into the words themselves, this one is much starker, colder, utilitarian. It invokes New York City. One detail we particularly like is the fact that the “O” is still a stylized, extremely minimalist translation of the Shou-Lao symbol.

One last note: the Iron Fist Twitter account has been posting daily images of storefronts. These, along with the new logo and the neon motif used in the promos at SDCC, tie into the theme of Danny operating on the streets of New York. But more importantly, they’re accompanied by phrases that are most likely episode titles. Last season, the episodes were named after kung fu techniques (both real and comics-based). This season, they’re going right back to the source material and using the titles of various Iron Fist-relevant issues! "The Fury of Iron Fist”, for instance, is the title of Marvel Premiere #15-- Danny’s introductory issue, and “The City’s Not For Burning” from earlier in the post is Iron Fist vol. 1 #3. We’ll make a comprehensive post either here or on our Iron Fist blog (probably both) once all of the titles have been revealed.

The fact that they started flinging out episode titles within hours of releasing the very first teaser suggests an accelerated promotional schedule-- which makes sense, because September 7th is only six-and-a-half weeks away! It can’t come soon enough for us; we’ve been counting the days since Season 1′s cliffhanger ending, and everything we’ve heard so far about Season 2 sounds amazing.

I’ve finally fully caught up on the Marvel Netflix shows, after finishing The Defenders a couple of days ago, and here’s my list of my best/worst and favorite/least favorite things in Marvel Netflix shows.

Spoilers for all the shows so far (Daredevil seasons 1 and 2, Jessica Jones season 1, Luke Cage season 1, Iron Fist season 1, The Defenders).

Favorite show: 1. Jessica Jones 2. Daredevil (those two are pretty close and far ahead of everything else) 3. Luke Cage 4. The Defenders 5. Iron Fist

Best season: 1. Jessica Jones season 1 10/10 2. Daredevil season 1 10/10 3. Daredevil season 2 7.5/10 4. Luke Cage season 1 6.5/10 5. The Defenders 5/10 6. Iron Fist season 1 3.5/10

Best opening credits: 1. Jessica Jones 2. Daredevil 3. Luke Cage 4. The Defenders 5. Iron Fist (Ha, it turned out the same as the show ranking. I think JJ, DD and LC all have great opening credits, and the other two are OK.)

Favorite protagonist: 1. Jessica Jones 2. Matt Murdock 3. Luke Cage (I like him a lot in JJ and The Defenders, he's one of my favorites in both shows, but he was less interesting as the protagonist of his own show) 4. Danny Rand

Favorite sidekick/supporting good guy character: 1. Karen Page 2. Misty Knight (I really thought she was a co-protagonist in Luke Cage, and she actually was a more interesting protagonist than Luke) 3. Ben Urich 4. Hope Shlottman 5. Malcolm Ducasse 6. Claire Temple 7. Trish Walker 8. Foggy Nelson

Favorite antihero/morally ambiguous ally/pseudo-antagonist 1. Frank Castle (duh! of course, he'll be on the list of protagonists soon) 2. Ward Mitchum (he turned out to be the most interesting character on Iron Fist, with the best arc) 3. Stick 4. Elektra (mainly for her charisma and chemistry with Matt - but the writing for her on The Defenders didn't make any damn sense) 5. Jeri Hogarth 6. Davos

Favorite villain: 1. Kilgrave / Wilson Fisk (tie) 3. Mariah Dillard 4. Shades Alvares - Luke Cage season 1 would have been much better if Mariah and Shades had been the main villains 5. Madame Gao - although unfortunately they messed her up by making her a part of The Hand

Honorable mention: Cottonmouth (for Mahershala Ali's performance and charisma and being a layered character.. however, he's also one of the worst villains in a way, because he was so incompetent and kept making stupid mistakes. I have absolutely no problem with the fact he died early, it would have completely stretched believability if he hadn't been killed. If Maria hadn't killed him, Shades would have, for said stupid mistakes.)

Worst villain(s): The Hand. (Why the hell did Marvel TV execs think it was a good idea to make them the main villains of Netflix Marvel TV and pollute 3 seasons of 3 shows that way?)

Best non-romantic pairing: 1. Jessica/Trish 2. Jessica/Matt 3. Matt/Frank 4. Jessica/Malcolm 5. Matt/Foggy 6. Matt/Stick

Honorable mention: Luke/Claire could have been in the top 3 or 4 based on the first few episodes of Luke Cage where she appeared, but unfortunately is now disqualified.

Favorite romantic (or at least potentially romantic) pairing: 1. Jessica/Luke 2. Matt/Elektra 3. Karen/Frank (yeah, they've been platonic so far, but if they were to have a romantic tone to their relationship, it would make a hell of a lot more sense than Matt/Karen) 4. Shady Mariah (Mariah/Shades) 5. Foggy/Marcie 6. Luke/Misty (though it barely qualifies as no UST seems to have remained after their early one-night stand

Worst canon romantic pairing: 1. Matt/Karen (I love them separately, but as a romantic couple, they're awful. Unable to be honest with each other, keeping things from each other, doing their own things and constantly distracted by being way more invested in and emotionally close to other people [Elektra and Frank] than in each other. Also, Karen seems to turn from a complex character with her own dark side into a clueless love interest stereotype whenever she's near Matt.) 2. Luke/Claire (just boring. I don't mind them much in The Defenders, but in Luke Cage, it was both predictable and rushed and done in a forced way [by having other people constantly telling them that they're so into each other]. I was hoping they would remain friends, that would have been much more original and wouldn't have turned Claire into the supporting love interest stereotype)

Canon romantic pairing I have no feelings about either way: Danny/Colleen.

Worst character arc, aka "that's what happens when writers treat you as a plot device rather than an actual character": 1. Joy Meachum 2. Elektra in The Defenders

so it’s no news that an infuriated debate is surrounding iron fist. i’m not gonna get into that here. i will, however, offer my pov on what makes it a better show than we’ve been reading in the past ten days or so. contains spoilers:

it’s a feel good show with a light-heartedness to it. daredevil, jessica jones and luke cage were pretty dark and socially/politically charged on a level, iron fist really isn’t asking to point you the way to anything. danny is extremely traumatized but the writing won’t allow it to weigh on your shoulders thanks to the innocence that’s also inherent to the character and often paints him as a most unlikely hero. you might feel for him (if you have a heart, i guess) but once you’ve closed your netflix tab you’ll probably just be as hopeful as he is or forget about his problems altogether. i’m not sure i’d have watched daredevil with my younger brother, but i’d surely watch this one with him.

danny rand’s story is one of loss, trauma and even rejection that i’m sure can resonate with many people even though they never punched a dragon. anyone danny’s age (or even not) can definitely feel like they don’t belong, and maybe i’m overreading but the fact that he can’t always control his titular fist feels like an allegory of how all of us often can’t or won’t find our own energy and strengths to get ourselves out of a bad place.

it’s been argued that danny lacks charisma and generally the quality of a hero. it’s true, but that’s because the narrative wants him to. he’s a boy who has no idea who he is or what he’s doing, although he might sometimes think he does. his naivete is the point of the character and while he can also be problematic those aspects of him are never celebrated. i don’t know how that’s going to evolve in other seasons/shows, but season 1 danny is no hero because he’s not supposed to be. to be quite honest, if critics didn’t get that i have no idea how to help them.

to offer some support to what i just said: there are scenes in which characters flat out tell danny he’s “the worst iron fist ever” and a pretty underwhelming fighter (i’m using kinder words than those that were actually uttered). he’s repeatedly called out on his shit and kept at arm’s length, his ability to be the iron fist is openly questioned and no one ever restrains from pointing out he really isn’t the sharpest pencil.

there are five women on the show, and they pretty much to various extent carry it by moving the plot forward. take joy: she could have been the good sister to the bad brother but she helped danny regain his place in the company because it was the right thing to do and then single-handedly kept three asses in it when they were voted out. jeri showed a more human side to her character while also being a boss ass bitch against the meachums, not to mention she took way less than half of new york combined to figure out whether danny was actually whom he claimed to be or not. now, the three women of colour then deserve a bullet point each.

colleen is a wonderful character. resourceful and independent, like danny she’s long been a little detached from the world (namely left in japan with her grandfather) and can feel like a fish out of water. she’s young and idealistic but also way more experienced and mature than danny, which makes them both a sweet, even touching pair and a not-so-ideal match (claire’s words, more or less). with her great fighting skills and her complexity she’s rightly considered the highlight of this show.

claire is too cool for me to describe so i’ll just say she keeps being wonderful and offering a refreshing, grounded point of view to the craziness that surrounds her. sweet christmas!

madame gao is a force of nature. she’ll just stand (or sit) there and offer serafic words of wisdom and even when put in a corner she’ll be the most powerful person in the room. her ability to mess with people’s head by simply spilling uncomfortable truth makes her frightening because really is there an enemy more dangerous than some part of us we don’t want to face? and, well, obviously she’s one hell of a criminal mastermind. i haven’t been this terrified since fisk and she barely raised an eyebrow this whole season.

when finn jones said this was the most diverse show in the marvel/netflix universe many might have laughed out loud, but turns out he was right. there are episodes in the back half of the season, especially towards the end, where he is pretty much the only white character around.

i’m very excited about davos. his position and motivations are understandable and i like that he’s not a villain born but he’s coming from a place of love and loyalty. this, along with the fact that he wanted and felt more deserving to be the iron fist, really makes for a compelling opponent. i’m not sure where this alliance with joy is going, but i can’t wait to find out.

Iron Fist: Season 1

Well here we are again with another one of my mod v watches. I’m about to start watching this garbage fire of a show. Wish me luck.

EPISODE 1:

This is petty but this intro is so fucking irritating.

Okay this first fight scene is not that bad. I’ve seen worse.

So here’s a question. Why the hell didn’t Danny say some shit only he would know?? Like I was waiting and waiting for that to happen and it never did so i’M JUST LIKE...

HE BROKE INTO HER HOUSE?????

This homeless guy pissing in shoes is extra extra weird.

It took him long e-fucking-nough to mention somewhat personal stuff.

AND OH MY GOD ARE YOU KIDDING. he had to do a fucking jump flip? that was so excessive and what the hell.

I mean it’s great Colleen could speak the language but it just rubs me the wrong way that he even like decided to do that.

I am totally here for Colleen thinking he’s gonna be a janitor.

EPISODE 2:

Wait wait. What is this?? Who is about to murder this guy?? Also how did he get involuntarily committed like how did this even happen?

Oh man she drugged him. Daaaamn. She’s gonna feel so fucking bad when she realizes.

EPISODE 5:

Followers beginning of episode 5 there’s a lot of talk about heroin and even some heroin use.

I will say this I really liked the line about not just being the Iron Fist but also Danny Rand. Which to me said he wasn’t just some mystical guy that knows Kung Fu and that would have been perfect if DR was Asian American.

Iron Fisted 2: The Immortal Snooze

Dag gon it! I've been iron fisted again!

Season 2 snuck up on us with barely any promotion. Marvel isn't even confident in this thing. I was actually all about season 1 - well, at least in the beginning. I remember that everybody was hatin on this series, but I wanted to give this man (Danny Rand aka Iron Fist) a chance. And for 8 of those 13 episodes I was in! But, you know, looking back on it I may have just been saying to myself "it wasn't THAT bad" at the end of each epi.

It was kinda like trying to be supportive of one of your siblings in something that they're clearly terrible at.

If you don't know the story of Iron Fist - think "Batman Begins". You know how Bruce Wayne ran off to train with ninjas. Here a rich white boy gets stranded with some kung fu fighting monks. The monks train him as their own, and in return he snatches the power of the Iron Fist ( a power that they pretty much worship and need to protect themselves) - He then abandons them (taking the power with him), and goes back home to be rich and white. And while being rich and white, he flashes around this particular Asian culture that he stole, and uses this new power of the FIST to beat up Asian gangs.

Well, I made it sound worse than it... well... it IS this, but...

...

... let's just move on.

I thought that season 1 was good until the last few epi's - which felt like they tied cement blocks to an already flimsy plot, and shoved those blocks off a cliff, and at the bottom of the cliff there was only pavement. As the plot hits the pavement in bloody splendor, the blood spells out the words "bleep you".

IRON FISTED, BABY!

Season 2 is in reverse. Most of this season is trash. You really only need to watch the last few epi's when it seems like they start having hope for this series again. BUT, though I say it's trash, even trash has hidden goodies in it. Have you ever been to the dumpster and seen a nice item?

- like a dresser or a lamp or a sweater? You think to yourself "If I can get those mystery stains out of that sweater, it'd look good on me." You want to do it, but you're afraid that someone will catch a pic of you shopping in filth and shame you online.

That's what we're going to do - look through this trash and find our nice sweater.

So, at the end of season 1, Iron Fist and his gf Colleen Wing enter IF's home (a secret, magical, kung fu place with monks, spells, and dragons). This seems like an awesome spot to start the next chapter right??

NOPE

Season 2 kicks off with IF and Colleen living together as boringly as possible in their apartment with little mention of their time in that interesting, magical place - this is not a plot hole, but a canyon!

On top of this, as I mentioned, is Danny's (IF) boringness. This here is his true super power; boring the audience to death. He actually makes other characters MORE boring; it's kinda amazing.

This is the plot - other characters trying to be interesting while Danny Rand weighs them down with his immense boringness:

Colleen (girlfriend who deserves better)- mysterious blood line, badass fighter, former member of a cult, and a knack for walking into crime. Seriously, every time she walks down the street a crime is committed in front of her. But, when she's in the room with Danny she becomes a nagging girlfriend character. BORING.

Ward ( like a brother to Danny). He's an asshole, but he's an asshole with flair. He's in rehab, but banging his sponsor. He's getting into drunken bar fights. He's buying guns off the streets. But, in Danny's presense, an overprotective brother/ insecure asshole. Bold asshole when alone, boring and insecure asshole when with Danny. SEEING THE PATTERN?

Joy - (like a sister to him)... to be fair, she is kinda boring on her own, BUT she's cute... cute and drunk. As soon as Danny shows up she gets shot - every time! Barely moving and in pain = boring.

Walker/Mary (one of the villains) - she is a badass who has been training to take down the Iron Fist, she also has D.I.D. Side note/plea: Hey writers! If you're going to write a character with a mental disorder, could you please write them so they are not defined by their disorder? And do they always have to be a villain? But, anyway, D.I.D. aside, an interesting character that we'd like to get to know. Around Danny she just wants to kill. The actress who plays her is excellent though.

Misty (from the Luke Cage series) - great chemistry with Colleen. I don't think she bothers much to talk to Danny - smart woman.

Then there's our main villain and Danny's brother from another - Davos.

Davos is a bit one note with always focusing on revenge, but once he finally gets it -whew! He became the Double Iron Fisted! He did things with that fist that Danny couldn't even dream of. It was at this point that I started rooting for Davos. Plus, once he gained this power, he wanted to clean up the streets - talk about a leader! Of course, he used his talents to go on a murderous rampage of gangs and a few innocents, but still.

In my mind, I totally changed the "Iron Fist" series. I had the pilot for whatever this new show of mine will be called, starting off with The Immortal Snooze vs The Amazing Double Fisted - Davos lands a punch on Danny, making IF's head explode - like BLAOW - like the goriest thing Marvel has ever done.

I want it in 3D! I want fake blood to shoot out intot eh theatres as it happens. I want four different angles simultaneously showing this display as The ADF ends the source of boredom in their city.

Then, Davos is a villain, but a villain that heroes call on from time to time.

I would also have Misty and Colleen have a buddy cop thing going on... and maybe a romantic relationship (their chemistry is just too good to waste). Or maybe it's one of those deals where the audience wants the relationship to happen, but they're too busy kickin ass; no time for love, just crime and comic relief.

Maybe it would just be their show, and they would call on The ADF every once and a while, but then he'd go back to killin for justice.

And there would be a soundtrack brought to you by Daft Punk and Drake; maybe they could even be in the series as Davos' sidekicks.

I've gone way down this rabbit hole - sorry, but you know my version would be a hell of a lot better. I keep waiting for Marvel to give me a call, but...

Instead we get 8 episodes of boredom with splashes of other characters (not named IF/Danny Rand) being interesting. And then, 2 episodes of good action and favorable plot developements.

Like Colleen now being the Iron Fist. BOOM!

And Danny Rand now being double fisted, but he uses his skills to shoot bullets. Idk how he went from chi and kung fu to gunslinging, but... idk people. I also don't know how something so sacred like the iron fist can simply be passed around like some good weed; seems like bad writing to me, but... you know what - I'm just gonna give this season its grade before it gets lower, as I continue to think about it.

Grade: D

Season 1 I gave an F, but with this season it seems like they've been listening to the fans complaints: the action was better, the dialogue though still kinda bad, was better and you can tell that they're trying. And even though I think the fist passing hands is stupid, they've passed the torch (kinda) to Colleen, who is Asian, which aides other issues (racially) that people had with this series.

And though I think as long as Danny Rand is around, boredom still lingers at every step, maybe they'll change that too if they get a season 3; it gives us chumps hope.

Speaking of anticipation, did y'all see the trailer for DD3? - that's what I'm talking about!

I'm hoping that the darkness within DareDevil leads him to end Danny Rand, and other annoying characters in these Marvel series'. It would be cool if all networks had a show within all shows, where a character hunts bad shows/characters down. Instead of the network cancelling the shows, this character would simply walk into their show and kill the characters off.

Another golden idea! Come on, Marvel! - where's my phone call?

(this is a post abt my opinion re: the whole iron fist race controversy. please don’t read the beginning and think i’m defending the show, i simply say the good stuff first and the bad stuff last - also it’s 3am so this is a mess

ETA: i edited it a bit after waking up and added some stuff - it’s still a mess tho)

ok so when the danny casting was announced i was one of the few people who didn’t get mad at marvel, mostly bc i didn’t raise my expectations for an asian danny like most of the fandom. and, as i said on this post, i didn’t think marvel casting an actor whose skin color matched the character’s was a reason to be mad at them, especially to the point of boycotting the show. and i still think that, bc if you can overlook danny being white when buying/reading his comics, i don’t see why you couldn’t when watching his show. and who knows, maybe they’d manage to pull off not being racist despite the whole ‘white savior’ thing. i mean, the great wall did it. like, i didn’t really have much hope on it bc daredevil exists, but i was willing to give it a chance. and then the reviews started coming out saying it actually was a racist mess so i was like, yeah, ok, now ppl have all the reason to boycott it.

(parenthesis to explain why i joined the doctor strange boycott but not the iron fist one: i boycotted doctor strange bc of the ancient one whitewashing and the whole tibet thing, not the white saviorism. yes, it’s an annoying trope but if you threat and develop the poc characters well - which ds didn’t - i don’t personally think it’s that serious of an issue individually - as in: the problem is not really the trope itself, but how often it happens. it’s like the sexy lamp thing, it’s annoying, but imagine if we were gonna organize boycotts to every movie that does it. i even was gonna watch iron fist on an illegal site but my college started so i only had the - also very busy - weekend to finish it and illegal sites didn’t have subtitles yet - my first language isn’t english

also: a boycott is different than simply not watching. boycotting is collective, it’s organizing and it usually ends up with the ppl who participated getting mad at those who didn’t)

tbh after watching the show i don’t get why the bad reviews. as my friend put it, it was “not incredible, not exceptional, but good. the kind of show that we’re always wasting time watching but if it’s marvel/netflix everyone goes WOOOAAHH”. imo it was a lot like daredevil, just less gritty. and less racist.

now, keep in mind that i’m a white brazilian, so, while i’m affected by lack of/bad representation on international media, my understanding of what is racist to asian ppl doesn’t exactly come from first-hand experience. but like. the thing with daredevil (especially season 2) is that all asian characters were villains (plus elektra who’s on a grey line here) and had no personality. they were just walking fighting stereotypes. barely even talking. but iron fist had 1. the monks and colleen among the good guys. and, granted, the monks don’t really show up but colleen was amazing. i loved her, loved her characterization (disclaimer: i’ve read only like 4 comics with colleen in them), loved her friendship with claire, loved her relationship with her students, loved her storyline, especially loved how she was the one to defeat bakuto instead of danny, i’d be fucking pissed if that didn’t happen like that. (also a parenthesis to talk abt how the only undeniably good characters on the show besides danny were all women, 2/3 of them being woc - 2/2 if you’re not pretending, as i am, that that ooc barbara kean-esque mess of joy’s last scene never happened) 2. the villains were incredible. madame gao was still a stereotype, but at least she was explored more - and her men weren’t all asian, and were actually military-ish, so no “army of ninjas” mess again. and the one-episode ones were incredible (i’m talking abt the ones from the challenge - ...except the russian dudes tbh - and lewis tan’s character jfc - more on this later). like, even if they had little screentime, they were all unique and fun and i’d totally watch a show about them.

ok, so i’ve said the good stuff (and some bad ones, but always with a “but” after them). now onto the bs:

honestly, the biggest problem with this show is the main actor. i hate saying bad stuff about actors but finn jones was just not the right choice. and, yes, partly bc he’s not asian.

as i said on the beginning of the post, i was more than willing to give white danny a chance. after all, comics!danny is white and is a beloved character nonetheless (even if i’ve read basically nothing with him yet). but, god, it was torture to watch that show and see all the occasions where asian!danny would have not only fit perfectly but made it better and been able to say/do stuff that people need to hear/see, not to mention certain uncomfortable-to-watch moments, especially between him and colleen, that would’ve been fixed by that. like, honestly, i can number so much stuff on this show that would’ve been improved with that - even by a creative standpoint like holy shit i’m not even a writer and i’m itching to rewrite that whole show with asian-american!danny, it’s not only begging to be done by the story itself but it’s also such a fun challenge, it’s such a fucking huge missing opportunity, it’s so frustrating.

and like, the whole “he’s gotta be an outsider” thing (which has been refuted many times already anyway) isn’t even valid bc davos is played by sacha dhawan, who is british of indian descent. and, granted, india is in asia, but it’s so different from east asia that ppl usually forget it’s in the same continent (i guarantee you that the ppl using that outsider argument do). so it basically confirmed that danny being an outsider was never about race, but about not being born in k’un lun.

but anyway, as i said, it’s partly bc he’s not asian, but there’s definitely more.

i’ve already seen ppl commenting on how weak the fighting scenes are, especially to a show that’s supposed to be about that, and i agree (even if there’s some pretty neat acrobatics here and then). while that’s definitely not the actor’s fault, i can’t help but wonder how much better they probably would’ve been with an actor who’s a martial artist himself and could do his own stunts. i mean, this character is supposed to be the 2nd best martial artist in the marvel universe. so much of him is about the fighting, having someone who can actually do that stuff would’ve made the filming a lot less restricted bc they wouldn’t have to worry about not showing his face while doing more complicated stuff (which reminds me: the stunt double’s face is clearly visible when danny attacks those two first guards in the last episode).

but my biggest issue with finn jones’ danny is the way he looks. first of all, he’s a skinny kid with floppy hair. he looks exactly like what we in brazil call “estudante de humanas da federal” (aka a history/geography/philosophy/sociology/etc major from a public university. just google “estudante de humanas”, you’ll understand what i’m talking about - it’s not a pejorative term, just not exactly the ideal look for the character). basically, he’s a punk bitch. he looks ridiculous. when he’s doing (what assume is) tai chi it’s fucking laughable. the whole way he moves is just wrong, and the way he looks just accentuates that, which is why they should’ve hired a skilled fighter to play the part - or at least someone who looks like one. i repeat: fighting is such a huge part of danny’s character, it makes no sense to hire a skinny dude who looks like couldn’t even kick my ass. he just doesn’t sell it, it looks like i’m watching a comedy. like my friend said, “the dude spent 15 years training and his arm is thinner than mine”

i mean come on

like, look at lewis tan (yesss we finally got here) during his fight on ep 8. zhou cheng’s movements /mocking danny/ /while drunk/ are SO much more fluid and natural, it was fucking torture to watch that and see what we could’ve had like jfc LOOK AT THIS

not to mention his body. like, hotness aside, that’s what an actual martial artist’s body looks like. y’know, with actual muscles. and i’m not above mentioning how show!danny has a beard bc finn jones looks 15 without it.

and honestly his acting is good but nothing stellar. i could swallow this pill if i had a cup of “ok but at least the guy is a fucking terrific actor” to help, but he’s just... nice.
