Yk that post that's like ‘signal is the spiritual successor to nightwing’ bc I DO & IVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT IT NON-STOP.

And the comics pretty much confirm it (To Me) in Grayson #15.

So in this issue each of the Robins, minus Steph (RIP Steph) get paired off with one of the We Are Robin gang and give them their own advice on what it means to be Robin.

Tim—whose main problem with this whole thing is that they don't know these kids, how can they trust them?—gets paired with Andre Cipriani, a mob kid whose dad was murdered by a rival gang when he was eight years old. Tim trains Dre by having him fight blindfolded. He tells Dre that being a Robin is about truth and investigation, which makes sense, right? Tim became a Robin by figuring out Batman and Robin’s secret identity (keep this in mind, all the Robins’ advice links to their origin).

To be a Robin, you have to understand what you don't know. And then you must seek to know it. You must always ask: how can I see into the dark? Batman once told me, being a Robin can be summarized into one word: investigation.

These two were an interesting choice to pair up. I would've thought they'd put Dre with Jason, given their violent tendencies—Dre is smart, but at this point in the comics doesn't strike me as particularly investigative. Then again, right after this arc he goes undercover in a gang, so maybe he learned something?

Speaking of learning something: at first I thought they should've paired Dre with Steph (#teamcriminaldads lmao), and while that would be an interesting team, Dre did learn from Tim. If Riko were present in this issue, she would've been a good fit for Steph, as she idolizes the Batgirls and Steph was both a Batgirl and a Robin. Plus, Steph and Riko are both brave & have mean streaks, something that Riko has trouble showing because of her shyness. Steph’s advice probably would've been along the lines of “being a Robin is about defiance”.

Besides, if Tim and Dre weren't paired up, we never would've gotten this interaction.

— You like Liszt.

— What?

— Franz Liszt. The composer. You play the piano. I looked you up. People who play the piano like Liszt.

Points to Tim for the most autistic small talk ever. ‘You like this, which I know because I researched you in a totally non-creepy way.’ Amazing. 10/10.

Dax gets paired with Jason. They're interesting parallels. Dax is the inventor/mechanic of the team, but also sort of the wild card with very strong morals, like Robin!Jason in a way. Like Jason, Dax’s father is (implied to be) a crook, though they took different moral directions because of that—Dax is completely opposed to gun violence.

Anyways, Jason's main reservation is that you can't have Robin without Batman. And I guess he decided to solve this issue by just becoming Batman & making the WAR crew relive his origin story by stealing tires from the mob.

Y'know, kid, Batman once told me, being a Robin comes down to one word: confidence.

Jason Todd, the Crime Alley street kid who had the balls (and the skills) to steal Batman's tires and get away with it. Sort of. Confidence, indeed.

Damian's problem with the Robins is, of course, that they're weak, and strength (according to him) can't be trained; you either got it or you don't. He gets paired with Izzy, who probably has the toughest home life of the WAR crew. Her brother's in a gang (that he regularly beats her up for not joining), and she's failing all her classes because she's too busy working night shifts at her mom's restaurant to sleep or do homework.

So Damian's advice to her is pretty apt:

Batman told me that there is one word that captures the essence of being Robin. Suffering.

Damian and Izzy are both outwardly surly, stubborn characters who have had to fight to survive. Notably, Izzy is the first of the crew to almost resort to killing/guns (in WAR #6). She's also probably the best fighter in the WAR crew after Dre and Riko. She does dancing, gymnastics, judo, and kick-boxing.

And, finally, we reach the point of this whole post: Dick & Duke.

Duke deduces Dick's secret identity in like .5 seconds.

— I've solved a lot of hard in my time. This ain't hard.

— No. No, it wasn't hard. Not for you. Again, Duke Thomas?

Dick: You discovered my secret identity!

Duke: What? Like its hard?

After scoping out their strengths and weaknesses, Dick sends the Robins on individual assignments: Dre and Tim to investigate, Dax and Jason to cause a distraction, Izzy and Damian to apprehend Robo-Batman/Gordon.

Dick brings Duke on to a roof for a stake-out, where they have this exchange.

— You think only the originals understand how to be Robin?

— Nope.

— Yeah. Me neither.

Then it turns out that Dick actually turned them all in to the cops because he wanted them out of harm's way. He's been watching Duke for a while and he knows he's scared of heights, so he led him onto a roof he knew he couldn't get off of. Just before they part ways, Dick imparts his Crucial Robin Advice:

Batman once wais to me that being a Robin is about one thing. Family.

(I find this whole thing super ironic considering Dick's whole aside concerning the Robins was the fact that it doesn't matter if people know you're manipulating them as long as it works.)

The point of Robin? Family. Dick and Duke are alike in this way. Dick only became Robin to get justice for his parents’ murder. Duke only joined WAR to find his parents.

Their origins and motivations are similar, and so are the characters themselves. Dick is often called the world's second-greatest detective next to Batman himself. Duke is a child prodigy—one of our first introductions to his character is when he tried to solve the Riddler's riddles in Zero Year. He loves puzzles. He's an amazing detective.

And, of course, one of the things we know and love about Nightwing is his inherent kindness, something that's present throughout Duke’s entire character arc. Even their hero names, Signal and Nightwing, are parallels of each other (light and dark). Batman’s first sidekick and his last. And, like Nightwing, Signal formed his own team (WAR) with no help from the others (except Alfred ig).

Of course, the entire point of Signal’s character is that he's not just a Robin. He's something different. It reminds me of that post that's like—’poor dick grayson, originator of a legacy he never meant to be a legacy, crushed with guilt and jealousy when he looks at all those who came after’. To me at least, it makes sense that Nightwing’s successor would've never been a Robin at all.

Storylines DC should totally pick back up: Riko and Dax

We Are Robins turned un-Bat-sanctioned vigilanties bitter that Duke was the only member of the movement to be invited into the Bat-Clan. Last seen: showing remorse for fighting with Duke? At least, Riko was.

This comic came out a year and a half ago. Where are they now, DC?!

In a perfect world, Duke would get an ongoing series and one plot arc would deal with Riko and Dax.

Personally I also want to see Maps Mizoguchi's take on the new Riko, because Maps was at first jealous of and then super impressed with Riko in her Robin days. She would be horrified by the Riko's new anti-bat stance (which Maps only tolerates when it's her best friend Olive).

Give me Riko!

Robin Chronology

??? Anyways so about a year into Batman we get this guy:

Dick Grayson, most iconic robin, anyways next robin-like character we get is Roberta the Girl Wonder

She lasts a single issue. A few years later it’s revealed that Bruce was the first Robin

Then Lance Bruner gets adopted by Bruce due to an arrangement the Bruners had with the Waynes. He dies in his debut appearance

and then in just over a year, Jimmy tries to prove a point so he becomes the next Robin

and after all that basically the next things basically stay the same like the next circus boy, who tried a different costume and different names before having Dick’s blessing to use the name

wait that isn’t canon anymore? uhh anyways the next robin hates rich people. Wait you’re telling me that that didn’t happen, so well anyways what apparently happens is this next robin

Next Robin is this dork

so things are going fine but then in a ridiculously convoluted plot happens that really should’ve treated this next Robin better.

So anyways Tim’s back as Robin, but now super duper depressed which makes the super white boy all angsty. But enough about him because the new robin is about to be introduced Batman’s biological son raised as an assassin.

Before the next more official guys, there was a Batman Impostor named Charles Nigaff who had a group called Batman’s Soldiers which consisted of Krunch, La Loca, Bookworm, and 3 Robins

Right before the next thing is some weird Scarecrow plot so the next Robin is kinda Selina. But anyways it was all mind tricks and illusions apparently

then there’s the We Are Robin movement

then they introduced the “first robin” but either way she’s at least the second (cause Bruce was the first)

there’s also Jarro

and Carrie Kelly was set up for Something in main Earth but apparently plans fell through and then there’s Maps Mizoguchi

there’s also the multiverse, alt timelines and alt future versions

Sidequest: The Viper Pit [snippet]

Batfamily Week 2023 day 5: Fantasy AU | Friendship/Team Bonding | “There’s more of you?!”

Summary

Duke buys a d20 from a mysterious pop-up shop, transforming an ordinary homebrew campaign into the beginning of We Are Robin’s next adventure.

Where were they?!

Panic filled Duke as he dismantled the couch cushions for the third time searching for his Wizards and Warlocks dice. His friends were gonna be here any minute and without the dice, there wouldn’t be a game and he would’ve spent eighteen hours writing his campaign for nothing.

He found another batarang under the sink, but no dice. Groaning, he tossed it onto the small pile accumulating in the hall.

Was it time to throw in the towel? He checked his watch. He couldn’t ask Bruce ‘cause he was out with Selina, or his siblings because they were busy, or even Alfred since he was out for the day. Too bad he wasn’t a Flash, otherwise he could sneakily buy some more time. And his only Flash friend (more like acquaintance) was Ace West, the Rube Goldberg of unintended consequences.

Duke texted his friends that he might be late and told them where the spare key was before hopping on his bike, the GPS pinpointing every game store in Bristol

…which were all closed, because it was almost 7:30.

In hindsight, he should’ve looked up their hours first. Then maybe he wouldn’t be screaming the fuck-word into a blue postal box after his fifth stop.

Did Wayne Enterprises have fifteen-minute delivery? Did they even have a gaming subdivision?

He briefly registered a text from Riko telling him they were there and that Dre would eat his food if he didn’t show. Sighing, Duke hopped on his bike and ran through his other options as he made his way back. Maybe he could fold origami ones? But that would take forever.

At one of the red lights, he spotted a cardboard sign pointing toward a garage sale. Furniture. Clothes. Games.

Everyone honked when he cut across two lanes. He shouted a quick apology and turned into a narrow alleyway with empty trash cans and shuttered windows. For a second, he thought he was in the wrong place, but another sign in the same font pointed to a slightly subterranean door with metal bars over the tiny window.

Was he about to enter a murder dungeon? For board game dice?

Sure, why not. Worst case scenario, Jason bakes him a Welcome To The Dead Robins Club cake.

The door swung open before he even knocked. He looked around for a motion sensor, but the place looked like the 1800s. A single bell rang as he stepped in.

“Hello? I’m here for the garage sale. Though this isn’t much of a garage.”

Walking through the maze of dimly lit shelves felt like writing in cursive for the first time. There were no signs or placards telling him where things were and nothing was grouped together. He found books with worn spines next to colorful glass orbs. An animal skull hung from the same rack as long robes and Renaissance-style dresses. He counted no less than a dozen candelabras scattered about. A cracked mirror stood against the wall. Wind chimes dangled from the ceiling, brushing the top of his head. Oh, and look, more orbs . Plus the dust itched his nose.

He pushed a jewelry box aside to look into the next aisle.

Suddenly: eyes.

I keep seeing a lot of posts saying that Duke started a gang, but like. No He Didn't. The Robins existed before Duke ever joined them -- and Duke only joined because of Alfred's interference. The We Are Robin comic starts with Duke searching for his parents and stumbling onto a Court of Owls meeting, then the Robins show up and save him at Alfred's behest. Duke didn't start a gang, the gang found & adopted him.

#he also didnt really lead them? like he had his moments but they were mostly a team #anyways small nitpick but saying duke started a gang is kind of a disservice to the other WAR members #if anything i think its implied that WAR was its own thing that Alfred co-opted via cryptic messages to 1 of its best members #(by pretending to b her fav hero... yeah its weird)#we are robin #duke thomas #dc #dc comics #daxton chill #andre cipriani #izzy ortiz #riko sheridan #batfam #alfred pennyworth #robin war

When Daxton called to tell him what happened to Vi Luke’s heart dropped.

“Dax, what’s up bud? Haven’t heard from you in a while…” Luke answers the phone casually and Daxton frowns.

Dax knew Violet was okay but he didn’t expect Luke to sound so…chill about it.

Violet broke her arm in high school and Luke forced her to stay in bed for two weeks. Not allowing her to move it unless she absolutely needed to.

She had an asthma attack while playing basketball with Jack once and he ignored Jack for a good week after even though it wasn’t even really his fault.

Violet slipped on the deck and the Hughes lake house one summer and Luke insisted that his dad replace the deck. That something was wrong with it and someone was going to get hurt. He even offered to work the whole summer to help pay for it and help rebuild it himself.

Luke’s always been a little intense when it came to Violet’s health and safety. So to hear him sound, like that when his sister was in the hospital was out of the ordinary to say the least.

“I wanted to call you and give you an update on V. I thought you may be worried…”

“You went to visit Vi? That’s good, I know she’s been missing you. I’m not worried, I know she has a lot of tests and assignments coming up. And if you’re there you guys probably stayed up late and binged watched some weird show you’re both addicted to right now. While you’re there, meet up with the guys and reconsider your decision to go to BC next year. Is she awake yet? I texted her earlier but I thought she might still be asleep or busy,” Luke says and Dax frowns

“Oh my God, you don’t know?” Dax asks and Luke sits up straight from Jack’s hotel bed.

“Don’t know what?” Luke asks

“Violets in the hospital,”

“She’s what? Since when? What happened? Is she okay?” Luke asks and Dax smiles slightly, that’s more like it.

“She’s…okay. Two guys broke into her place last night. Luckily she wasn’t too hurt. From what I understand they didn’t attack her, only pushed her out of the way and against the wall, and she hit her head and now has a bit of a concussion. Nothing too serious. I thought you knew, I was only calling to give you an update,” Daxton says and Luke scoffs

“If I knew, I would’ve already been there. When did this happen?” Luke asks and Jack sends him a concerned look when he starts putting on his shoes hastily

“Yesterday. Like almost 12 hours or so ago I’m guessing. I would’ve called you earlier if I knew no one had already. We were all under the impression Vi or Jules’ called you,” Daxton explains and Luke’s jaw tightens

“Jules knows?”

“She’s the one that drove her to the hospital,” Dax replies and Luke shakes his head.

Be mad at Jules for not calling him or be grateful she took care of his girl when he couldn’t? A debate for another time, Luke decides as he stands up.

“I’ll be there as soon as I can,” Luke says and Dax says goodbye

“What’s going on? Jack asks as soon as Luke hangs up the phone

“Violet’s in the hospital. Someone broke into her apartment last night,” Luke says and Jack gasps

“Oh my God. Is she okay?” Jack asks

“She only has a minor concussion from what I hear but I gotta… I need to go,” Luke says and Jack nods

“Yeah. Go,” Jack nods

“What do I do - Who do I-“ Luke asks and Jack puts a hand on his shoulder

“I’ll handle it. Just go. Keep me updated,” Jack orders and Luke nods, giving his brother a quick hug before practically sprinting out of there

The flight to Michigan felt like the longest few hours of his entire life
