In regards to cutting out the tribe- DO IT.
The tribe of rushing waters was SO BADLY DONE. The first non-clan large group that the clans have interacted with and they’re so bad at existing that every time we see them they’re on the verge of collapse. It literally exists solely for the clans to have a messiah complex and swoop in and fix everything.
Like these cats hunt hawks regularly as their sustained food source, something clan cats rarely do (and clan cats will often rather run than hunt a hawk). They live in the mountains, one of the most inhospitable non polar environment, and they outdate the clans by at least several decades. They should have been strong cats, a sturdy culture with different beliefs and a fascinating anthropological (for us readers and the clan cats) of a sister culture.
But no we have a bunch of scrawny cats who can’t defend their territory from like five rogues (and what rogues think that the mountains are a good place to live?) and they’re always five seconds away from just disbanding their society because things got just a little bit too hard.
Also remember when the original Stoneteller that we were introduced to literally refused to choose a replacement to take his place when he died because he would rather everyone perish and fall apart into loners and rogues than change any of his culture to better their lives?
I'm so glad someone agrees, the whole Tribe of Rushing Water is just used as a plot device so the Clan cats can look cool and more competent when they save them. 🤷♂️
I always wondered how they could sustain themselves in the mountains for as long as they did when they seem so weak.
Of course my solution involves birds LOL.
I imagine the Tribe of Rising Wing is lean and sleek, because it's not just the cats who contribute. They have many birds of prey who hunt for the Tribe, and many songbirds who collect herbs. The Tribe is more medically advanced than the Clans because they have such a steady supply of unique herbs and such and have learned so much in their time. They probably don't have any greater technology, but they have more knowledge.
Birdsong and their Talons (personal guards/advisors), Darkskies and Daybreak, are somewhat immortal. The Great Wing doesn't give nine lives, he grants a form of immortality. Nobody even knows how old Birdsong is, but the cost is that they don't have a great memory. They still die if you slit their throat, though.
There's also a side story involving Daybreak. She has an osprey companion who stays pretty close to her. He is her husband from when she was a bird herself, but she lost her Song when she became a cat, so she can't communicate with him outside of body language. Birdsong can translate, but Daybreak doesn't want them to. She tries to keep her heartache to herself. She hates that she almost wishes for his death so he can be at her side properly again, but the Blessed are chosen randomly upon death. He could reincarnate and be alongside her again, or she could lose him forever.
