Connor RK800 and Jaime Lannister: different characters with the same arc, but one work while the other don’t
Tumblr media
It’s honestly driving me insane how similar and identical are the arcs of Connor RK800 from Detroit: Become Human and Jaime Lannister from Game of Thrones so yeah, now I’m gonna do an entire post (or meta?) about it. It’s gonna be long.
A little background for people who know only one of these fandoms.
Detroit: Become Human is about a future where robots are slaves of humans who abuse and torture them, so they started to “wake up” rebelling and developing free will and emotions like living beings. So the society who sell them create Connor, a very advanced robot designed to stop them.
Game of Thrones is an epic fantasy story set in a fictional world about different powerful families that fight with each other with wars and machinations to destroy each other and gain more power and the throne. Jaime Lannister is a member of one of these families.
These are two very different stories, but so are Connor and Jaime. They have opposite characters, goals and priorities: Jaime always put romantic love above anything else, while Connor doesn’t give a fuck about romance. Jaime is good in communicating with others: he knows how to talk to certain people, can read a room (at least sometimes) and he understands when is being mocked, while Connor is socially awkward and doesn’t really understand when someone is mocking him or someone is sarcastic.
And yet.. they both:
1) have the same beggining
2) are grey characters
3) have an obsession to overcome which is needed for them to develop as character (and if they fail to it, they both gets the involution and the “negative” arc)
4) have the same evolution (or involution, it depends of which arc we are talking about) and the same ending
1) The same beggining
Both these characters start with a child falling from a considerable height, but while one is causing the downfall of the child, the other is trying to save the kid.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fact that Jaime is trying to kill the boy while Connor is trying to save the girl doesn’t mean that Jaime is the villain and Connor is the hero. It’s more complex than that.
Jaime is trying to kill Bran because the boy just saw him having sex with his twin and if he says to anyone what he saw Jaime and his sister would have died. He did it to protect their lives. It wasn’t really about Bran. It was about him and Cersei.
On the other hand, Connor is trying to save Emma not because he cares for her or wants her to be safe, but because it’s his mission. He is a police android who knew really well, even before his arrival on the scene, that his mission was saving the child at all costs. If his mission was killing Emma he would have done it. It wasn’t really about Emma. It was about the mission.
2) are grey characters
Being in both fandoms, I noticed that Connor is way more popular than Jaime in terms of liking a character, while Jaime is more known as a character than Connor because Game of Thrones is more famous than Detroit: Become Human. Jaime is really loved by a part of the got fandom, but the other part look at him as selfish and evil because of everything he did, while Connor is loved by 98% of the dbh fandom, but in truth Connor’s actions aren’t better than Jaime’s actions. I think this happens because:
a) Jaime’s actions are motivated by his incestual and toxic relationship with his sister, so I think some people tend to dislike him more not for the actual actions but because of their disgust about the incest part
b) Connor being socially awkward. There is this tendency to see characters who are socially awkward being always sweet and cinnamon rolls because they aren’t good at communicating with others
In the first case, Jaime’s actions aren’t worse than Connor’s, are only more disgusting which is different and for the second option, Connor isn’t socially awkward because he can’t hurt a fly. He can and he will. He is socially awkward because he is an android created to be a police officer, so they gave him good combat skills and the intelligence he needed to deal with deviants (that’s how are called the robots who developed free will and “woke up”). I assure you, he isn’t awkward when he has to deal with them. Connor was created to do this. He isn’t an android created to make friends, so why bother to give him social skills?
Let’s make a recap:
What Jaime did:
a) tried to kill Bran to protect his relationship with Cersei. But did Bran die? No.
b) threatened Edmure and his kids to return to Cersei? Okay, but did Edmure die? Again, no.
c) fucked Cersei next to their son’s corpse who just died. Disgustingly disgusting. But again, someone got hurt? Someone died?
d) killed his cousin to return to Cersei. Okay. Fair. One person died.
Let’s talk about Connor now. He:
a) Manipulated and lied to deviants to accomplish his mission
b) can kill Daniel, the Tracis, Ortiz’s android, Rupert, Cloe, Simon, Markus, North and a lot of other androids (and humans too) to accomplish his mission
c) can kill Hank, which is the closest person he has in his life, to accomplish his mission
Connor is not a baby. He is a fucking terminator who can destroy anything that it moves to accomplish his mission. Yes, Detroit: Become Human is a game where the actions of the characters are decided by the gamer, so he can do these things or don’t, but if you decide to make him do these things you never got the feeling he’s out of character. Because he is not.
Yes Jaime is what he is and did the things we know, but Connor too did some messed up things. And I’m pretty sure he killed more and caused more pain than Jaime.
At the end of the game, when he has to locate Jericho to stop the leader of the revolution of the deviants, he is able to remove the head of one android he killed to use it against an another android (killed by Connor too) to get the location of Jericho and after that he drops the head as it was nothing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But at the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter who is worse between Jaime and Connor. What I am trying to say it’s that they are both grey characters. They both started as negative characters. Yes, Connor too. Because even if you choose every possible good and positive choice with Connor, he is still a negative character at the beginning. He is a very advanced robot at humans side (humans that are clearly the villains since they are the ones abusing and torturing robots) which priority is hunting androids who just want to be free. It doesn’t really matter if he isn’t the one to kill them, because he knows really well that if he succeeds (and he wants to succeed) they get killed.
That’s why both Connor and Jaime have two paths in front of them. And what path they’ll take it depends by the next point.
3) have an obsession to overcome which is needed for them to develop as a character
Both Jaime and Connor, despite starting as negative characters, have the potential to have a redemption arc, but this is up to them and to get it they have an obstacle to overcome: their obsession.
For Jaime the obsession for Cersei, for Connor the obsession for his mission.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This obsession is what motivated their story and all their actions. It’s there from the beggining. From the moment they tried to kill/save the child. Jaime did it for Cersei. Connor did it for his mission. Every “negative” thing they did was because of that. In the last point, where I made a list of the bad things they did, you can notice all these actions were motivated by that.
To both of them happened things during the story that could or couldn’t change them: Jaime had it with Brienne, a noble and honorable warrior who reminded him who he wanted to be and for the first time in his life he developed a romantic attraction toward someone who wasn’t his sister, and Connor had it with Hank, the human police officer he worked with who had a way more “human” approach to what they were investigating.
For both of them is really hard to overcome it because it’s all they know for most of their life (in case of Jaime) or are programmed to do it (in case of Connor) and it isn’t only something they had in their heads. Both of them got manipulated by people (Cersei for Jaime, Amanda for Connor) who did the best they could to convince them there wasn’t anything else to make sure they remained in this cage for their own interests.
To prevent them from becoming their own person and being free to be who they want to be, and not what they want them to be.
This it’s the Jaime and Connor arc. Becoming their own person. Choosing for themselves. Be free from the manipulations. And the two arcs they have in front of them are just one in which they succeed, and one in which they fail.
4) have the same evolution (or involution, it depends of which arc we are talking about) and the same ending
Both Connor and Jaime have the potential for a redemption arc because even after all those bad things they did because of their obsession, they did good things too. They aren’t monsters.
Jaime saved Brienne risking his life and saved her from being raped. He also saved milions of lives by murdering the king, even if that meant getting the nickname of Kingslayer.
Connor can save Hank. Can choose to not kill the Tracis. Can choose to not kill Cloe. Can help Markus to save North.
They mostly did all these things when they were away from the toxic person who brings the worst of them (Amanda and Cersei) but near someone who bring the best of them (Hank, Tyrion and Brienne).
And the best part is that all these good actions they did went against their priority: for Connor saving Hank means letting the deviant go, when catching him was his mission. Jaime returning to Harrenhal to save Brienne means delay his coming back to Cersei, when Cersei is the most important thing to him.
Despite both having all their life surrounded by this “obsession”, sometimes they decided to do the right thing even if that meant going against what mattered to them the most and their own interests.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This didn’t mean that they weren’t obsessed anymore, it means that for a moment, their desire to be their own person was stronger than their obsession.
But it was just a moment.
Connor and Jaime, for most of the story, are in a “limbo” where they pass from doing bad things because of their obsession (most of the times) to doing good things because they want to (few times). During this part of their story, it doesn’t mean that if they do a bad thing they’ll go to the negative arc and it doesn’t mean that if they do a good thing they’ll go to the positive arc, because none of these decisions are the definitive one.
It’s the decision they will take in their climax scene is the one that determines their future, their arc and their ending.
a) They decide to do the right thing which go against their obsession in their climax scene because they matured as characters for the better -> Their strenght and everything and everyone they faced was enough to overcome their obsession -> they become their own person letting go forever the obsession -> Positive Arc
Jaime: Book!Jaime is currently having this arc in the books, where is pretty done with Cersei and doesn’t even think of returning to her knowing really well she needs him. And this is also the arc Show!Jaime was supposed to have in the series.
Connor: Deviant Connor is the arc Connor will have if he overcome his obsession. He will become a deviant (meaning he outpassed his programation and became his own person) and will join the revolution of the androids, the very same revoution that he was created to stop (and he was obsessed to stop it, since it was his mission). He will infiltrate in the society that creates androids freeing all the robots who are there (and they are a lot) and helps the cause. In the end, he will help robots getting rights as living beings and he will be free to be himself with a person who actually care for him (Hank) with their relationship being stronger.
b) They decide to do the same bad things they did at the beginning being once again slaves of their obsession -> everything and everyone they faced didn’t change them showing that they didn’t matured and didn’t learn anything -> nothing will never be as important as their obsession -> Negative Arc
Jaime: Show!Jaime got this (or at least D&D thought he got this). He received an opportunity to have a better and new life, a life with Brienne who loved him and in doing so he was able to be himself, but he ruined it to return to his obsession who almost got him killed few days before because he wasn’t able to overcome it. So he returned to his obsession (Cersei) and dies.
Connor: Machine Connor is the arc Connor will have if he fails to overcome his obsession. He too received an opportunity to do the right thing, to help his people and be free, but he ruined it to continue his mission. So he will kill everyone who stands in his way (Hank too, who was the closest person of his life) to murder the leader of the deviants. If he fails, he dies. If he succeed and he is able to kill him, all the deviants will be destroyed (meaning there will be a genocide of his own people) and androids will return to be slaves for humans for ever. And Connor will die, because he accomplished his mission so he isn’t needed anymore. Connor is intended to die either way if he goes to this path.
Both Jaime and Connor, if they have a failed redemption arc, return to their old manners and how they were at the beginning, and both died. So..
Why an arc work and the other don’t?
Why an arc is appreciated and considered a sad but good storyline and plausible with no characters being ruined while the other is hated by everyone with all the characters who are involved being ruined and OOC?
For multiple reasons actually.
1) the climax scene
The scene where the character finally take a definitive decision and his path is chosen can’t be a random scene because it’s not a random scene. It’s the scene where the destiny of the character is chosen, so it has to:
- be important and people who are watching it (or reading it if it’s a book) must know it and feel it that something big is coming
- every factor (the music, the acting, the dialogue etc) must be cured for that scene
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The climax scene they chose and wrote for Connor work perfectly because has all these requirements:
a) Connor and Markus are two of the main characters of the story but never actually met each other before this scene, so from the moment you realize they are in the same room and they actually met you know something big is gonna happen. Moreover, we know Connor is there to kill the leader of the deviants, which is Markus, so you also feel tense because you are gonna see two characters you got attached to being an enemy to each other because they are at opposite sides so again, something’s gonna happen.
b) The music is fitting for the scene, the acting of Bryan Dechart (Connor’s actor) is good as he entered sure of himself but the more Markus talked the more Connor realized he was right so he becomes less secure until he is full of doubts and all the dialogue is about him having to make a choice about who he wants to be. And as if that weren't enough, Markus ends it with “I think the time has come to you for ask yourself that question” and “it’s time to decide” making perfectly clear that this choice is gonna be definitive, and he is saying it not only to Connor but to us too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now let’s see the Jaime one.
a) It’s important? I have absolutely no idea. It doesn’t look or feel important.
b) the music is fitting? There was music? I honestly don’t remember. I can’t notice the music because I’m busy to try to understand what the fuck is going on. The dialogue is fitting? What dialogue? All Jaime is saying here is a list of the bad things he did because of Cersei (including lies since some things he says didn’t happen that way just to confuse who is watching even more) and “She is hateful and so am I” like?? What does it mean? This is not a dialogue. This is putting random words together to do a sentence. The acting is fitting? Lmao of course not! Waldau’s acting is really confusing??? Why he looks sad? Why all he is saying is that he is a bad person and not a word about  who he wants to be? This isn’t a grey character who decided is path, this is someone who feels guilty for something he did in the past and wants to be reassured and or he feels like he deserves pain and death because of it. Well if this is the case, than this is a totally different topic that has nothing to do with choosing between overcome an obsession or succumb to it. Fuck, it’s been 4 years since this scene, and I still don’t understand what the fuck is going on and what they wanted to show. What the fuck I am watching?? Can someone explains it to me?? Hello???
This doesn’t look like a climax scene. And it doesn’t look like a climax scene because IT’S NOT.
Because Jaime had already his climax scene.
Tumblr media
a) it’s important? Well yes. The time tells us it is. This is a series and this scene is happening at the end of a season so people expect it to be important.
b) The music is fitting? Very. You could feel it in your bones. The dialogue is fitting? Yes. They don’t talk directly about Jaime and him having to take a decision, but it’s related to that because we see Jaime and Cersei arguing about something and Jaime realizing he had enough (just like Connor in his climax scene is realizing who he truly is) and he decides right here not because he has to but because he is 100% sure of what he wants and decides with zero regrets.
This climax scene was setting Jaime on the positive arc, because he overcomed his obsession. His obsession is Cersei and the sexual relationship he has with her, but here he decides to leave her, and ending the conversation saying “I don’t believe you” and by the acting, the voice and the movements of Waldau, which is excellent, we know he meant “I don’t love you anymore”.
All of this is even more accentuated by this scene that happens soon after that:
Tumblr media
Cersei and the relationship with her being the obsession of Jaime means that if he kisses, sleeps and starts a romantic relationship with a different woman (which he did) after he spent the 40+ years of his life always being loyal to Cersei is the ultimate, irrefutable prove that he got over it. It doesn’t matter how much he loves Brienne, if he still obsesses over Cersei it couldn’t never happened. Never. You can’t make him overcome an obsession and then return to that obsession in a minute. This is not how writing works.
But since Benioff and Weiss don’t know how to do their jobs, after these two scenes (the climax one and the second which accentuated the path Jaime is in) they put the scene they think it’s the climax scene, when it’s just a scene that doesn’t work narratively after the two I just mentioned. Which add another problem:
the decision the character takes in the climax scene is definitive and irreversible. You can’t just put a climax scene where the character decides and then one second later make him change his mind all of sudden. Him passing from a good action to a bad one was supposed to happen before the climax scene, when the character was still grey and still couldn’t decide and the reason both Connor and Jaime decide without doubts and regrets in their climax scene is because they both have no doubts and regrets anymore.
In Detroit: Become Human, every action Connor did and every word he says after that scene is convinced, there is not even a shadow of a doubt, no matter which arc is in. Despite the game giving you the choices of what to do or say, you’ll never get a choice of Connor helping the deviants if he is Machine Connor, and you’ll never get a choice of Connor helping the humans if the is Deviant Connor. Because it’s irreversible. There is no going back.
So what we got was a mess and both arcs of Jaime being ruined even before they started.
2) OOC
Both Connor and Jaime being grey characters for most of the story means that is possible to write them a good written arc where they remain in character all the time without putting forced things and making them say and do something they wouldn’t, no matter if they are in a positive or negative arc.
Connor remains himself and in character for the entirely of his arc (no matter which arc is). If he is Machine Connor so he has the negative arc, his character doesn’t get reduced to a caricature and he doesn’t lose his intelligence or badass moments, and he still says and does things that Connor would have totally said or done.
The fact that now is Machine Connor doesn’t mean he is a sociopath who doesn’t care of anything else, it does only mean that everything always comes after his obsession (the mission) because that obsession is and will always be until his death is priority, everything else is after that. That’s part of the reason his character isn’t ruined. He still cares for Hank for example, and when he dies, he looks troubled and in one case he is the one to kill him, and he does it because Hank gets in the way of his mission, which matters more, so he did it, even if he still cared about him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He also doesn’t become stupid all of sudden because he is intended to die. Machine Connor is smart enough to know that the best way to kill Markus is finding a sniper rifle and the right roof and he is smart enough to know that if he gets interrupted the only way for him to accomplish his mission is killing who interrupted him or killing himself after saving his memory so the next Connor will know what to do. He also doesn’t have to move to the other side of the country in two seconds with the story being set in the same city, so he is where is supposed to be without resorting to absurd and improbable teleporters. Machine Connor gets emotional and poetic scenes without getting ruined to force them.
Jaime, from the moment he left Brienne to return to Cersei (so from the moment the writers think his arc begins) becomes a totally different person. He starts to say and do things that contradict his character, the writers were able to destroy years spent to create this character and who he is with a single sentence. Everything that was important to him apart from Cersei disappears, and the things that made him an interesting character like killing the king to protect the innocents have zero value now, because “actually I never cared for them, innocents or otherwise”. Cersei isn’t his priority. Cersei is the only thing he cares about, because the writers deleted every single other part of him and at the end, he isn’t even a character anymore.
He doesn’t only lose all his intelligence, but simple common sense too, all to force scenes that could have happened in a smarter way, like him having to get unnoticed to get to Cersei and yet he shows his golden hand which is the only one to have in all Westeros, just to get caught and have the scene with Tyrion. And of course, he is able to arrive to the other part of the country even before characters who left before him in a blink of an eye because the writers decided so and fuck logic.
3) Realistic reactions to the characters around them
Both Show!Jaime and Machine Connor have, just before the end and their death, a scene with a character they care about and who cares for them: Tyrion for Jaime and Hank for Connor. In both cases, the way they write the main character it expands to the other character too, meaning that since Jaime is OOC, Tyrion becomes OOC too to force the scene the writers wanted for them, while in the other case since Connor is in character, Hank is in character too, and it’s the scene that is written in a way to be plausible because of these characters, and not the opposite.
Jaime got caught in his way to return to Cersei and he meets Tyrion. The last time they talked Jaime was still in a relationship with Brienne (which lasted weeks, let’s remember that) and Tyrion expressed how happy he was that Jaime was happy with Brienne because he cares for Jaime wants him to be happy while now is in front of a tormented Jaime who left Brienne, the same woman that was making Jaime happy, to return to the one that abused and tried to kill BOTH OF THEM, and he decides to.. help him to return to Cersei so he will return to be miserable and probably die (and he will)?
The writers were so desperate to make a scene of them hugging to make watchers cry sad tears that forgot in which situation these characters are, with who they are and what we know about them and what type of relationship they have with each other and with Cersei. It would never ended with hugging. Why Tyrion should help the brother he loves to leave what made him happy and return to the one who hurted both for all their lives? Once again the characters are ruined by forcing a specific scene, a scene that because of it meant nothing to me. Yes, Jaime and Tyrion had a beautiful relationship and a great bond and I love the scenes where they show how close they are. But these aren’t Jaime and Tyrion anymore. So I feel nothing (and nope, I’m not going to create gifs of that idiotic scene from that cursed episode, if you wanna see it just go to Youtube).
Connor and Hank have a very strong relationship too, but they remain in character. Hank wanted Connor being himself and freeing himself from his obsession (just like Tyrion wanted Jaime to be happy, with Brienne) but on the contrary of Tyrion, Hank didn’t forget who he was because it was “convenient” so he has the realistic reaction he was supposed to have, and because of that this time there aren’t gonna be hugs and sweet words, but a fight.
Tumblr media
With “fight” I don’t mean they’ll gonna scream and push each other, with “fight” I mean a real fight, that will end only with one of them killing the other.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Machine Connor is gonna follow his mission and killing everyone who stand in his way (in this case, unfortunately it’s Hank) even if he cares for Hank and Hank is not gonna let Connor kill the leader of the androids because it’s not right and by now he knows that the only way to stop him is to kill him and he will, even if he cares for Connor. And they both know it.
And that is what makes the scene powerful and way more emotional than a fake hug between two fake characters who became the shadows of themselves. It’s real, it’s tragically beautiful and sad, poetic in a way (a robot fighting for humans and a human fighting for the robots) but it works.
Of course having Jaime and Tyrion fighting to death wouldn’t make sense. Connor and Hank are doing it because they had a different relationship from them. They knew each other for less time and even if they care for each other, they had a rocky start so them having this interaction is fitting to them. Jaime and Tyrion are siblings who cared for each other since ever, so their clash couldn’t be that violent, but they had to have a clash. Tyrion being disappointed in Jaime and refusing to free him was enough. But we all know what we got, right?
In conclusion, I’d like to say that I made this meta first to analyze Jaime and Connor as characters because I find really interesting they had so much in common and also because I’m fucking tired of people saying that “Jaime’s arc was perfect you simply didn’t get the happy ending you wanted for him” because Machine Connor arc is the prove that is possible to write a failed redemption arc which is satisfying and appreciated, and Detroit: Become Human is written by David Cage which isn’t the best screenwriter in the world, but he is in the Olympus compared to the writing of D&D.
Machine Connor and Show!Jaime have exactly the same arc (and the same ending), the only difference is that one is written well and the other isn’t, and it’s really crazy thinking of how the writing of a fucking videogame which isn’t even that famous is better than the finale of one of the most famous series in the world.

little detail from this scene: connors slight eyebrow furrow, as if hes confused or conflicted
Tumblr media
YES!! I love this shot because it's a great example of the beginnings of obvious turmoil within Connor.
First I'll mention shot size/angle because I'm a film nerd and it is relevant. This is a closeup, over the shoulder, Dutch (or Canted) angle shot. The closeup gives the two subjects, Kara and Connor, a sense of privacy - not in general, but to the audience, because we cannot see anyone but them in this shot. The closeness also contributes to a more personal, "intimate" feel to the shot. "Intimate" simply meaning familiar or relatable in its closeness: the audience is placed right with Kara and Connor, and we see this shot as if we are level with them, and near them. And it's over Kara's shoulder, where we can still see her head and shoulder (this is called a "dirty" over-the-shoulder), making it seem like we are personally looking at Connor from behind Kara. This immerses us, thus making it "intimate". Dutch angles (see how the shot looks tilted; the main subject, Connor, is not perpendicular with the bottom of the screen, but at an angle) are commonly used to portray confusion, imbalance, chaos, disorder, or feeling lost. The angle makes us as an audience uncomfortable, because we don't naturally see the world tilted. And making Connor the focus of this shot adds to the interpretation that - combined with his frown of confusion - he is definitely unsure and perhaps troubled, but at the very least confused or off balance.
Kara is a deviant, escaping with a presumed human girl. Connor not only doesn't understand deviancy, nor the appeal of it, he doesn't understand (yet) having that drive to do incredibly dangerous things to protect someone else. He knows how to face danger to accomplish his mission; but when someone's mission is to protect someone else of their own free will, he doesn't get it.
Connor is never told to preserve anyone's life (besides Emma in The Hostage, but that was his mission, rather than a secondary objective, and not his own choice). He's never ordered to prioritise someone's life over his mission, and Amanda is angry with him if he dies to save Hank or chooses to save Hank instead of pursuing Rupert. Those are decisions Connor makes on his own - and also happen to occur after this chapter.
Connor sees a deviant (confused) making a sacrifice/taking a risk of their own free will (conflicted). He has this moment of questioning why: why is this AX400 a deviant? Why is the AX400 so hell bent on protecting the little girl, and evading the law? Why would the AX400 risk her life crossing a highway just to escape? And most prominently, why do these deviants behave in ways he deems irrational? He and Kara have this moment where they look into each other's eyes and actually see each other, rather than the faceless titles they hold (AX400, Detective android, etc). It makes it more personal, how close he gets to her. And it affects him in some way, whether he recognises it or not.
He's definitely confused over Kara's behaviour, and most likely conflicted over how he and Kara are both androids, yet so vastly different. This early on Connor cannot imagine deviating. Which means that, to him, either he's too superior for deviancy, or Kara knows something he doesn't. She's just as much a mystery to him as he is to her, and the rest of the deviants.

Androids mouths are probably dry. They ain't got saliva or any lubricant of sorts. Got no reason to have something like that being realistic, EXCEPT...the Tracis and companion models, if u know what i mean... 👀
In this case i guess Tracis don't get thirium thru 'em mouths or they got another way some stuff doesn't go direct to the circulatory system.

My 'Detroit: Become human' phase is back so it's time for my thoughts.
I recently played dbh again and this time I focused more on markus.
Markus wasn't my favorite character before but now I'm older, more mature and finally have good taste.
When I went through the game for the first time I perceived the relationship between markus and carl as father and son. that's it. But now that I've played again I've noticed that it's not quite like that after all.
Yes Carl was always good to Markus and treated him like a friend and son, but I bet he was well aware that Markus "doesn't feel it".
For pre-deviant Markus, Carl was first and foremost his master. It is only deviant Markus who calls him 'dad' and sees what pre-deviant Markus did not pay attention to through his program.
I have a feeling that Carl may not have liked this master and slave relationship. After all, in the game we can see Carl trying to encourage Markus to do more like human things. he often asks him for his opinion on a specific topic, knowing that Markus' answer will probably be limited by his program.
Still, Carl was keenly aware that once Markus became more like a human, there would be no turning back. He would no longer be his domestic help. He will see more and feel more.
In fact, we see the real father and son relationship only at the end, when Markus returns to Carl's after attack on Jericho. Only then does Carl see him fully as a living being, unlimited by the program, and his son.
Carl knew that until Markus became a deviant there was no way he could even hope for Markus to see him as his father. Often in their scenes together you can see Markus smiling at Carl, but as soon as he turns away from him he adopts a neutral expression. I'm sure Carl also paid attention to this and recognized that he was unfortunately not dealing with a real human being, but a machine that is his slave.
When Markus finally breaks through his programming Carl sees in him who he always wanted to see in him.
Depending on the player's choice, Carl can see it dying or after Leo has been injured. In the latter, Carl is not even angry at Markus for what he did. He is frightened that he could lose both of his sons in that moment. He tells Markus to run away because they will kill him. (In the language version I played it sounded a bit more aggressive than in the original, which puzzles me a bit, so here I could be wrong lmao)
From what we can see in the game Carl has always tried to show Markus that how androids are treated by humans is unfair and he can change that. I think that if Carl hadn't "rised him" in this way Markus would have had more trouble breaking the software. In the game we could see Markus being attacked by protesters. More than once he was probably also attacked (I'm guessing mostly verbally) by Leo. The only thing these scenes differed in was that Carl in the scene in the studio forbade Markus to defend himself. This "order" went against everything Carl kept telling him.
Everyone rather knows why Carl ordered him to do so. After all, Markus is an android who could easily kill Leo. However, this was something inconsistent with what he taught him. Carl kept saying that such behavior was unfair and suddenly expected the same from Markus.
Did Carl do wrong at the time? this is quite a difficult question.
We know one thing, probably if not for this Markus would have continued to remain a machine. After all, we have seen leo's verbal attacks on markus before and he never looked like he wanted to do anything to him or treat him the same way. he was always calm and composed.
Maybe the very fact that Markus was then treated like a machine by someone who had always treated him like a human (or almost human) made him able to break his program.
Markus is a really interesting character.
Tumblr media
And yes, I know it's just a simple game and most of what I wrote are just theories, because the game only shows a few days in the life of three androids.
I just like to analyze such things, and maybe someone had similar thoughts.
I also know that probably the creators didn't even think about it and it's just a loophole in the plot.
btw as now I returned to dbh I can write ff with characters from this game(Hank only platonically sorry), so if you want you can ask and I will try to write something interesting

A/N: reader is hank's daughter and cole's twin, and as the year DBH is set in has no significance, we're pretending it's set in 2045 so this makes more sense ;P (pretend hank was born in 1992) well, im tired and projecting, enjoy the hurt/comfort @tzulv ! <33
Tumblr media
----
You pull your gloves on, shivering as you walk onto the bus. The weather can get horrible in Detroit, especially in winter. Usually your Dad would collect you when it was this cold, but he was busy with his police work. Apparently, he was assigned an android as a partner- which he is not happy about at all. After your brother's accident, your Dad hated androids. You never blamed them though, which caused many intense arguments.
An hour or so later, you arrive back home. You hurry inside, immediately going to turn the radiator on. You dump your bag and coat in your room, and start your daily cleanup. Your Dad has never been one for cleaning, so you're usually the one to do it. You grab last nights takeaway containers, some beer bottles and dump it all in the bin. You wipe down the counters, straighten out the couch and head to your room.
You spend the next few hours studying, eventually coming out of your room to make dinner. You glance around, not seeing your Dad anywhere. He's probably at some bar. You make yourself instant noodles- it being all that was in the cupboard- and head back to your room. The shining lights from the fairy lights reflect softly on your fork as you twirl it in the cup. Your gaze drifts to a framed picture of your Dad hugging you and your brother. Your Dad had a big grin on his face, with a smear of frosting on his face.Your brother was on your Dad's right side looking up at him with a similar grin, frosting coating his hands. Your eyes were scrunched closed from laughing, and you were leaning against your Dad's left arm.
You smile fondly at the memory. It was your and Cole's 6th birthday, and you two ganged up on your Dad and had a cake fight. You recall how afterwards you and Cole had a contest to see who could eat their slice the fastest, and how you both got sick from eating too fast. Your Dad had tucked you both in with promises of more cake the next day. Looking back on memories like those, it was weird knowing you wouldn't ever see your brother again less than a month later.
You stare at the picture for another moment, then tearing your eyes from it. You look down at your now cold noodles and stir them absentmindedly. Your Dad lost himself after the crash. Nothing seemed to matter to him except alcohol, not even you. You were left to bring yourself up. You were the one to do the shopping, cooking, cleaning...you were the adult of the house. A part of you wished he would pull his act together, but a different part knew even if he did you couldn't forgive him.
A window smashing snaps you out of your thoughts. You hear footsteps in the kitchen, and instinctively pull out your swiss army knife. Although your Dad never taught you much, he made sure his daughter knew how to defend herself. You quietly make your way to your door, pressing your ear against. An unfamiliar voice is talking, it's definitely not your Dad. You suck in a deep breath and push your door open.
You creep down the hallway, poking your head around the corner. You stifle a gasp at the sight- your Dad was lying on the floor unconscious with a bottle of alcohol, a gun beside him. There was a man kneeling beside him, practically analysing him. He has yet to notice you. You spare a glance at Sumo, who looks content with the situation, and step forward. The man turns to look at you and you see the blue circle on the side of his forehead- you recognise he's an android.
You hold your knife defensively in front of you, "Who the hell are you?" He slowly stands up and raises both of his hands. "My name is Connor. I'm an android sent by CyberLife, and I'm Lieutenant Anderson's partner. Who are you?" You look down at your Dad, then back at him. Connor seems to understand, "I didn't do this. I came to get him for a case."
You scoff at him, "I know you didn't do this, this happens every fucking night." You lower your knife, acknowledging he isn't a threat. He lowers his hands back down at looks at you expectantly. You hesitate before putting your hand out to shake. "My name is Y/N Anderson. I'm Hank's daughter." Connor shakes your hand, "It's a pleasure to meet you, Y/N." You drop your hand and look back down at your Dad. What you said wasn't a lie- this was a daily occurrence. Most of the time you would prop a pillow underneath his head and throw out the alcohol, other times you would pour water on him. It depends on how late it is.
Connor kneels back down to your Dad and shakes him, "Wake up, Lieutenant!" You roll your eyes and lean against the wall. "You gotta be more aggressive than that." Connor glances back at you, then turns back around and slaps your Dad. Your eyes widen and your mouth falls open slightly, while Connor pulls your Dad up. "Hey, get the fuck outta my house!" he slurs as he stumbles along with Connor. You raise an eyebrow at your Dad while he drunkenly calls for Sumo to attack, not even noticing you.
You trail after the two as Connor sets your Dad on the bath. Despite how late it was, you wanted to see where this goes. To your surprise Connor actually turns on the tap, making you laugh at him. He spares you a glance before turning the tap off again, staring down at your Dad. The latter seems to finally notice your presence, to which you smile, before he turns back to Connor "What the fuck are you doing here?"
"A homicide was reported 43 minutes ago. I couldn't find you at Jimmy's bar, so I came to see if you were at home." Connor responds cooly. You huff a laugh and your Dad shoots a glare your way. "Jesus, I must be the only cop in the world that gets assaulted in his own house by his own fucking android..." he groans as he tries to sit up, then looks up at Connor "Can't you just leave me alone?"
Connor looks like he's contemplating something, before saying "You seem to have personal issues. You should consult a professional who can help you." You involuntarily take a step back as your Dad angrily stands up yelling "Beat it! You hear me? Get the hell outta here!" He sways and Connor sets him back down again. The android straightens up and turns to the door, "I understand. It probably wasn't that interesting anyway. A man found dead in a sex club downtown.." you scrunch up your nose in disgust as Connor continues "Guess they'll have to solve the case without us..."
Your Dad pauses before saying "You know, it probably wouldn't do me any harm to get some air.." You roll your eyes and take this as your cue to leave. You walk to the kitchen, grabbing some cleaning supplies and cleaning up the mess the pair left behind. "Fucking bastard, breaking my window.." you mutter under your breath. CyberLife better be paying for this. A few minutes later, you're done cleaning and Connor re-enters the room. You look at him for a moment, trying to decide what to say.
"I.." Connor turns to you, tilting his head, "Thank you. If you didn't get here.." you gesture to the gun on the floor. "Thank you." He nods before pointing to a picture on the table, "Is that a picture of your brother?" You blink and look at the picture in question. It was a school photo of Cole at the start of Kindergarten. It was his first school photo. You remember being next in line for your picture and pulling funny faces behind the photographer to get him to laugh.
You focus your attention on Connor again, "Yeah, yeah it is." He nods again, looking around the room. You return to your cleaning, and after a few minutes your Dad walks back into the room. He looks at you before saying "Be good. I won't be long." You look at him and say nothing- what could you possibly say? "Ok, also are we going to talk about how you tried to kill yourself?" You knew he would never talk to you about it so there was no point in trying.
You watched the two leave and turn back to the window. It was freezing outside and there was now rain forming a puddle beneath the windowsill. Brilliant. You grab some duct tape plus some old cereal boxes and beer boxes and begin taping it against the window. You take a step back, admiring your handiwork. You walk back to your room and toss the noodles into your bin.
You stretch out on your bed and stare at the ceiling. Given the circumstances, meeting Connor was nice. He seemed like a good person- well, a good android, you suppose. Maybe he'll rub off on your Dad, and then he'll be nicer to you. Or maybe actually have a meaningful conversation with you. You couldn't recall the last time you two spent time together- probably when Cole was around. As your thoughts drift from Cole to androids, you slowly fall asleep.
----
You and Cole are laughing at each other, making some stupid joke. Dad is laughing along with you, eyes focused on the road. It was a snowy night outside. You tell Dad to turn up the music- Jazz- and he does, doing a little dance too. You and Cole giggle at his antics. You turn to your brother to tell him a joke but all you can see if white and there's a screech and someone's screaming and-
----
You bolt upright in your bed, cold sweat coating you. You slow your breathing and sip the water on your bedside. You slowly got out of bed and walked out your door. You walked to the sitting room and crawled onto the couch beside Sumo, who happily put his head on your stomach. This is how Hank found you several hours later in the early morning when he got home from the bar. He had walked over to you and pulled a blanket over your legs. You had mumbled in your sleep "G'night Da..", to which he smiled and whispered "Night kid." You slept soundly after that.

The reactions I get from people when I say my favourite DBH character is either Nines or Sixty— mostly Sixty though.
“Why not someone who’s on screen longer than one scene?” “Why not someone who actually has lines?” “Why not Connor?”
Because I can play dolls with these two without worrying too much about being in character?? Because I love picking apart and analysing Sixty as an antagonist and as a parallel to Connor? I love tragedy and Sixty is chock full of that. Nines can be whatever I want him to be, and that’s fun, but I have spoken at length about Sixty with people before. That’s my guy right there. Him and Nines, but my love for Sixty is just 📈📈 because of what he represents to me.

Ep.4
I was scared
This is NOT a ship. It's a father-son relationship!!!
⚠️WARNING ⚠️ MEANTION OF DEATH, PANIC ATTACK, AND ANXIETY
Fandom : DBH
Relationship : Connor & Hank
Character's : Connor, Hank & Sumo
Summary : While investigating a crime scene, Connor faces a situation that leaves him startled. Hank tries to help him push through his panic.
Word count : 2.6k
*4:21pm*
The elevator lifted them up to the floor they were supposed to be on. Connor flipped his coin back and forth, doing all sorts of tricks with it. Hank glances at him back and forth, getting quite agitated. Connor catches the coin in between 2 of his fingers. Hank snatches the coin off him.
"You're starting to piss me off with that coin Connor." He shoves the coin in his pocket.
"Sorry, Lieutenant."
Connor stands still, embarrassed. Hank notices but doesn't do anything. He feels the cold touch of the coin in his pocket. The doors of the elevator open, revealing a room with black and yellow striped walls. Connor and Hank exit the elevator. He scans the room for potential escape routes that the deviants must have escaped. He walked up to a door and found thirium on the wall. He scoops some up with 2 fingers. He samples the evidence.
"Fuck, Connor that's disgusting."
"Well how else am I to sample the blood."
They stare back at each other.
"Is today's job to make Connor feel embarrassed."
Connor wiped the thirium on his jacket before waltzing into the other room where there was a dead body. He analysed that the model was PL600. He felt Hank brush past him up the stairs, making his way to the roof. Connor followed. Up the stairs was a load of crates and the pat to which the deviants escaped. But Connor felt an earie presence. He peered at a crate that had a trace of thirium on. He reached out for the bar and pulled. Inside was a deviant.
"Shit."
The deviant shot Connor in the hip. He fell to the ground in pain. He has never felt it before.
"CONNOR!" shouted Hank as he ran up to him.
He grabbed hold of Connors arm and helped him up. They ran and hid behind a ventilation tube. The guards began to shoot at the android.
"You have to stop them. If they destroy it, we won't learn anything." Connor held his hip as the thirium dripped out.
"We can't save it it's too late. We will just get ourselves killed."
Connor leapt out from behind the ventilation tube and sprinted up to the deviant. He jumped over a crater that was in the way and placed his hand on his wrist. All he saw was a blur. His mind was connected to the deviants. Connor felt a sharp pain that lasted a while. Like someone was shooting him over and over. He pulled away from the deviant who lay lifeless on the floor. Connor huffed, startled at what just happened.
"Connor!"
It was nothing but muffled.
"Connor. Are you alright?"
He heard Hank's shouts, but he was too fixated on his fear.
"Connor!"
"Okay.." he paused.
"Are you hurt?" Hank preceeded to ask with one hand on his shoulder.
"I'm okay." Connor stared at the deceased deviant.
"Jesus. Oh, you scared the shit out of me." Hank paced away. "For fucks sakes I told you not to move! Why do you never do what I say?" Hank shouted at Connor as he moved back towards him.
"I was connected to its memory. When it fired.." Connor paused and gulped. "I felt it die. Like I was dying.." Connor avoided eye contact with Hank. He felt his presence of anguish.
"I.. I was scared." Connor finally looks up at Hank with looming dread in his eyes.
Hank moved closer to Connor. He pulled him close to him and wrapped his arms around him. Connor stood frozen. He felt the pain over and over in his head, like a broken record.
"It's ok, kid. I got you."
*Hank's flashback*
The windows were dripping with water, and Hank was sitting in the living room with Sumo on his lap. It started to rain heavily. A loud bang of lightning startled Sumo.
"Hey, calm down, it's alright."
Hank turned to hear Cole crying. Down the hallway was Cole's room. The door was open a crack. He got up and walked down to his room. He expected Cole to be sitting in his bed, but instead, he was hiding in his wardrobe with the door shut. Hank slowly opened it to find him sitting in the corner.
"Hey. Bud, what's wrong."
Cole looked up at Hank with fear in his eyes the same way Connor looked up at him. Hank held his arms out.
"Come here, Cole, let's get you back to bed."
As he began to exit the wardrobe, another bang of thunger paraded throughout the house. Hank sighed and saw Cole's eyes swell up with tears.
"Hey, hey Cole, it's ok. It can't hurt you." Hank said in a soft tone.
Hank sat beside Cole in the closet. He put his arm around him and held his head up against his chest. He put his hand over his ear so it would be less loud. With his other arm, he caressed his back to soothe him.
"It's ok, kid. I got you."
*End of Hank's flashback*
Hank let go of Connor, ushering him away. Connor wrapped his arms around him also like Cole soon did after. So Hank hugged him tighter and repeting those same words.
"It's ok, kid."
*6:57pm*
Hank turned the car engine off. He opened the car door. Connor sat silently, just staring in front of him wearing that same look on his face. Hank waited for him to move before giving him a slight nudge. Connor flinched when he broke out from his thoughts.
"Woah. Connor, are you ok?" Hank raised his hands in front of him to ensure that he would stay calm.
Connor nodded, realising where they were. His trembling hand opened the door. Hank was waiting by the door for him to get out of the car.
"Connor, get a move on. I'm starved."
All of a sudden, when Connor stood up, he felt faint. He looked up at Hank, who was looking at him puzzled.
"Hank."
He tried to shout for him, but only a whisper came out. Connor's knees became weak, and his throat began to close up. He couldn't breathe. He bagan to hyperventilate, and he looked at his hands, which were shaking. Hank looked over at him, confused. Connor felt wek and dropped to his knees.
"Shit, Connor!" Shouted Hank.
He knealed down in front of him and supported his body with his arms. Connor jestured to his his neck. It was obvious that he was having trouble breathing.
"Connor, son, look at me." Hank gently placed his hand on his face and moved his chin up so they were making eye contact.
"Connor, just breathe."
He could not stop. His face was sweaty and pale, and his heart was beating a lot faster than usual. Hank moved closer to Connor and put one arm around his back, and the other he held his hand.
"It's ok, Con, it will pass soon. It's just a panic attack. Just try and slow your breathing."
Hank took Connor's hand and placed it over his heart. Hank's heartbeat was a lot slower than his.
"Can you do that for me?"
Connor felt how much of an increase in the speed of his heart had changed. Connor tried to breathe slowly, but all that came out was short little gasp for air. He turned to Hank and saw his worried look. Hank quickly changed that expression to a lop-sided smile.
"Are you ok now, Con."
Hank let go of Connor, who just looked at him. Hank waited for an answer. He made sure to keep the same expression. Connor shook his head, and a tear streamed down his face.
"No."
Connor sobbed into his jumper he wiped his eyes and dug his face into it. Hank got behind him, wrapping his legs around his waist to make him feel more secure. He held Connor's head and saw that his arms were up to his face. Hank put his other arm around his front, cradling his hiccuping stomach.
"You had it bottled up today for too long. If you feel like this, tell me, and we can sort it out, ok?"
Connor finally raised his head out from his arms and jumper. He looked up at Hank, who was looking back at him. He nodded. Hank pulled down his sleeve to his coat and wiped his tears.
"You did so good."
Hank liften Connor's chin and gave him a light kiss on the forehead.
"Thank you, dad."
Connor managed to force some words out of his anxiety filled throat. Hank pat his back while he stood up. He turned around and held his hand out for Connor to take. Connor reached out and held his hand while Hank supported him as he stood up.
"You hungry?"
Connor shook his head. Hank put his arm around Connor and walked to the door. Hank took out his keys and put them in the door. He opened the door to find Sumo waiting for them patiently. He wagged his tail at Connor and Hank.
"Good boy, Sumo."
Hank took off his coat and shoes and put them aside. Connor did the same. Connor walked down the hallway as Hank walked to the kitchen.
"You sure you're not hungry, Con?"
His bedroom door shut. It echoed throughout the whole house. Hank put his hands on his hips and stood looking down the hallway at his door. Hank felt that he had done something wrong that made Connor feel like he couldn't talk to him about it. He poured Sumo some dog treats in his bowl and scooted it over to him with his foot. He put the treats back into the cupboard. He looked over to his left and saw a packet of unopened chocolate biscuits. He picked them up and walked down the hallway.
Connor sat on his bed with his knees up to his chin. His feet were covered by the blanket, which he loved. It had dogs on it and some of Sumo's hair. He looked to the side and saw a closet. He felt drawn to it. He stood up and scanned it. He saw Hank and Cole hugging each other. It was obvious that Hank loved Cole very much. Hank opened his bedroom while holding the packet of chocolate biscuits. Hank also gazed at the cupboard while holding back from showing that he hurt. He cleared his throat.
"I brought these." He broke the silence.
Connor turned to Hank. "I'm sorry. About Cole. I never realised how much he meant to you."
"Yea well, wouldn't you."
Hank sat down on Connor's bed, still looking at the closet, which once him and Cole sat in.
"What made you feel so scared." Hank looked up at Connor , who still stood up.
He turned towards him and sat down on the floor, his back against the bed. Hank ran his fingers through his hair, messing it up slightly.
"I don't know." He took a while to say those words, but Hank understood why.
"It was just so sudden, and it hurt me. I've never felt that before. Let alone any sort of pain."
Hank nodded as he understood.
"Since I've become a deviant, I've been feeling really quite." He hesitated as he searched for the word he was looking for.
"Scared, anxious, hurt." Hank finished for him.
Connor nodded. "Yes."
Hank picked up the packet of chocolate biscuits and opened them. He took one out for himself and held the packet out to Connor. He just shook his head before resting his head on Hanks lap. He realised how hurt Connor was. He put the biscuit back and put the packet to the side.
"Get up, Connor. We are going somewhere."
Connor looked up, confused. Hank normally lets him rest. Does he think that Connor was weak? Connor lifted himself off the ground and grabbed a hoodie off his bed. He looked at it before throwing it back down. He went into Hank's room and grabbed one of his hoodies instead. He walked down the hallway, and by the door were his shoes. He slipped them on. Hank looked up from clipping Sumo's leash on.
"Is that mine?"
Connor looked at it.
"Yea." Connor looked ashamed.
Hank lop-sidedly smiled at him. He didn't do it back, though. Hank understood. Hank put his coat on and took Sumo's leash. He opened the door, and they all walked out. Hank locked the door behind them. Connor waited by the car.
"We are walking." Hank said as Sumo sat down on the bottom concrete step.
*7:37pm*
They arrived at the bench, where they had one of their first interactions. Where Hank piinted the gun at him. But he knew Hank was as hurt as him. He just didn't show it much. Sumo jumped on the bench and lay down on it, taking up half of it with his fat meaty body. Connor sat down on the edge of the bench with Hank sitting in the middle.
"Now. Connor, do you know why I brought you here?"
Connor looked at him and shook his head. There was a long pause.
"It's because this place had one of the worst memories I ever made. I wish i could go back in time and change what i did." Hank looked into Connor's eyes.
Connor waited for him to continue.
"I pointed a gun at you. I took all my anger out on you for something that wasn't even your fault. I know that i can't get Cole back, but I just can't accept it. I was mad at you for dying and coming back thinking thar Cole could do the same, but he can't. Cole is gone, and i can't do anything about that."
Hank stood up and walked to the green railing that he peered over and saw a large river that streached over the landscape.
Connor walked up to him and stood behind him. Hank could feel his presence. He put a hand on his shoulder.
"I used to think that drinking would wash all my problems away, but it only made them worse. I knew that and still did it anyway." Hank turned to face Connor.
"You helped me overcome this Connor. If I shot you and you couldn't come back, I would probably be dead. But I didn't." Hank's eyes became red and puffy.
"But why would you regret something that you're glad you didn't do?" Connor took his hand off Hank's shoulder.
He opened his mouth, trying to speak, but nothing came out.
"I guess I just regret taking my anger out on you." He turned back to face the railing. "I bet I sound so fucking stupid right now." He chuckled to himself.
Connor shook his head. "No, you don't. Hank, listen to me. You should not feel bad about this. You are the best partner I could ask for to work with Lieutenant. God, I haven't said that word in a while because I do not just consider you as a partner."
Hank glanced his way, trying to keep himself together.
"Hank, you are like a father to me."
Hank rushed forward and wrapped his arms around him. He buried his head into Connor's shoulder. Connor held him.
"Thank you."

Hello! I'm sorry to bother you, but since I'm not an experienced gamer myself, I'd like to ask. What exactly is wrong with DBH, in your opinion? I didn't like it either, but can't really distinguish a problem.
Hi! No bother at all, sorry to have taken so long, I've been deep into another game since last week and forgot to answer your ask...
So it's not necessarily a DBH problem, but a David Cage problem (the founder of Quantic Dream, his game dev studio). He wrote and directed every single game released by his studio and that's exactly where my problem is. This guy have an ego the size of the universe and both the mediocrity and bigotry to match it. He's just a pathetic, idiotic man-child so full of himself and it shows in his stories and the development of his games (for one of the worst example you can look up Elliot Page's experience with him during Beyond Two Souls <- warning for use of deadname and misgender, this article dates from 2015, before Elliot Page's public coming out as a trans nb person).
Cage loves to think he's a genius and subversive writer and proudly proclaims so, the specialised media are eating this shit all up not even trying to analyse the numerous problems of his writing past mundane plot holes (it's especially true with most french media even mainstream, because their interest is born out of a very misplaced national pride since QD is known worldwide) or mention the mess that are the horrible work conditions at the studio btw (you can also check that up, some articles have an English translation).
First, all of his games have a problem with women characters, they all reek of sexism (he was heard saying that "in [his] games all women are whores", charming) and they all try to have a theme that is only touch with a ten foot pole and leave it at that.
For DBH, that theme is racial injustice but with robots for what I've read (haven't played or watched a LP for this one, I suffered enough. To anyone reading this, if you ever wondered "Do robots have feelings? Do robots are humans too?", they do and please go play the Syberia games, because it's Sokal who handled it best) ;
For Beyond (watched a LP), it's trauma ;
For Heavy Rain (watched a LP), it's death/mourning ;
For Indigo Prophecy (played), it's paranormal for lack of a real theme lmao, I refuse to consider mental health to be it, this game is awful and not just the story. For the laugh, Cage said in the director's commentary (egotrip dude thinks he's a movie director) of IP that people don't finish games so why bother be consistent and he proceeded to do whatever the hell he wanted instead.
All of these themes are handled so badly by Cage, the plots lose credibility real quick and as I said are full of holes or disappointing twist you can't avoid. Cage thinks his games are revolutionnary when having the illusion of choice has never applied more to games than the QD ones and I'll be nice by not mentionning the gameplay of the earlier titles.
Honestly, I just have pure hatred for this man and I hope the workers there who are victims of psychological abuse get the chance to leave and that the impended tribunal decisions will condemn the studio and its two main execs and I want QD to tank for good. There’s a reason the studio lost the Star Wars game they were supposed to make after the announcement backlash.

Vol.3
Tumblr media
Tumblr media

A1 1. John Paesano - Lost(マーカス「自由への行進」冒頭や「革命」死亡シーンの曲) 2. Philip Sheppard - Keep Turning(カーラ「あらたな我が家」1階に降りた時の曲) 3. Nima Fakhrara - Investigation(コナー「相棒」「天敵」捜査シーンの曲) 4. John Paesano - Find Jericho(マーカス「ジェリコ」廃船に着いた時の曲) 5. Philip Sheppard - I am Kara(カーラ「ズラトコ」初期化マシンに立った時、「夜行列車」ローズの家に着いた時の曲) 6. John Paesano - A False Freedom(マーカス「画家」カールをアトリエに連れて行く時の曲) 7. Philip Sheppard - In the Cold(カーラ「海賊の入り江」探索する時の曲)
A2 1. John Paesano - Time To Take Action(マーカス「ストラトフォードタワー」序盤中盤で流れる曲) 2. Philip Sheppard - Buzzkill(カーラ「ズラトコ」屋敷でアリスを探す時の曲) 3. Nima Fakhrara - Analysing(「逃亡」コナーがカーラの泊まった所の捜査に向かう時の曲) 4. Nima Fakhrara - Eden Club(コナー「エデンクラブ」捜査シーンの曲) 5. John Paesano - Treated Like Slaves(マーカス「命をつなぐもの」倉庫に侵入する時の曲)
B1 1. John Paesano - Can We Still Trust Our Machines(マーカス「ストラトフォードタワー」パラシュートで脱出する時の曲) 2. Philip Sheppard - Breathe In(カーラ「リコールセンター」で流れる曲) 3. John Paesano - We Can't Save Everyone(マーカス「魂の夜」墓参り及びマンフレッド邸で流れる曲) 4. John Paesano - CyberLife(マーカス「キャピトルパーク」店舗襲撃準備をする時の曲) 5. Nima Fakhrara - Kamski(コナー「カムスキー」で流れる曲)
B2 1. John Paesano - A Huge Mistake(マーカス「決断の時」ルーシーと話す時、「命をつなぐもの」箱のアンドロイドを見つけた時の曲) 2. John Paesano - Not Human(マーカス「失意」アトリエの灯に気付いた時、「命をつなぐもの」トラックの鍵を盗みに行く時の曲) 3. John Paesano - Finish The Barricade(マーカス「行進」バリケードのシーンの曲) 4. Nima Fakhrara - Crossroads(「交わる運命」コナーが変異体になるか選ぶ時、「革命」店舗に逃げ込んだマーカスかノースを撃つか選ぶ時の曲) 5. Philip Sheppard - What Light Breaks(カーラ「逃亡」ラルフと揉める時、「ズラトコ」初期化マシンが作動した時、「海賊の入り江」ジェリー達が建物に入ってきた時の曲) 6. Philip Sheppard - No Man Has Borders(カーラ「旅立ち」で流れる曲) 7. Nima Fakhrara - Meet Markus(「革命」コナー操作を選んだ場合の戦闘シーンの曲) 8. John Paesano - The Horrors of War(「革命」前半がマーカス操作を選んだ場合の戦闘シーンの曲、後半が進軍する時の曲)

Kind of dislike when people say they got "the bad ending" of DBH. Was it an ending you felt emotionally unfulfilled by? Then that's a bad ending for you, totally. But in my first playthrough, when Alice died in Kara's arms, I knew that would happen when I chose the choice to hide and not protect Alice. I knew that she'd die (I'm just aware of tropes and can predict what's going to happen). Do I think that's a bad ending? Not for me. I was sad, bitter, but that's exactly how I wanted my story to be like in the end, with Kara not committing suicide on the bank of the river and by continuing on with life after she'd lost everything she cares about. The sheer satisfaction I felt when she stood up, despite loosing it all, and seeing a car pull up to collect her. Because I made it. I made it through it all. And it's the same with Markus. I snapped during Freedom March. I didn't want to sacrifice myself. I wanted to continue on with life. So I attacked. And in the end, I'd lost North, Carl, and Simon, but he stands up and life goes on because there's a war to win. And I went to war despite losing everything I cared about: Peace, making diplomatic decisions, being rational. I think that's why I enjoy Connor so much. Because when he turned deviant, he left behind everything he cared about, but for something brighter. His story at its core is about self-preservation and doing what he must to ensure his survival (via choosing the revolution or CyberLife). The "bad" ending isn't bad for me. It fit my brain exactly to what it needed. It was a story of self-preservation for all three of them, because that's what I needed. And ultimately, preservation is what androids wanted for themselves.

pssssst. for the fic ask meme: 1, 2 and 17 😊✨
I love you.
1) Who is your favorite character to write for and is this the character you find easiest to write for?
My favourite character to write for is Connor. Connor thinks about everything that goes through his head, which gives me an excuse to do a lot of analysing of other character's body language and facial expressions, and his own body language and facial expressions. On the other hand, keeping that up is hard, which is why the easier character to write is Hank. Hank's more about his emotions and his own gut reactions, and while he can get inside his own head it's not constant. My current fic is almost entirely from Connor's POV and I want to serve him a nice tall glass of STFU at points.
2) What is your favorite fic of yours?
Getting Home was never intended to be put out there for anyone but me and like, two other people. It was my NaNo last year, and I blew past the word count in 3 weeks, which is the first time I've ever successfully completed a NaNo. By the time I'd finished tweaking and editing it I couldn't bring myself to keep it to myself.
17) Do you have any wips that you can tell us about? What are you most excited for in your wip?
Current wip right now is technically Pendulum which is written but still being polished and edited as I go. There's a scene coming up in two chapters time which is basically the whole entire reason the story got written at all.
Without too much by way of spoilers:
Tumblr media
Aside from that I foolishly signed up for the DBH Big Bang as a writer, and while I haven't started on anything yet I have 4 different ideas for what I might write. I think I know which one I'm going to go with, but I need to sit and ruminate on the plot first.

So thank @itsybitsybatsyspider for getting me obsessed with DBH Star Wars AU. I now cannot stop thinking about it and have already written an entire outline for a Mandalorian AU but that’s besides the point. Now I’ve got every character who might use a lightsaber, and what colour their lightsabers would be, in my most humble and thoroughly analysed opinion. If you even care:
Primary characters:
Markus - Yellow and Green, double-bladed, connected hilt that can split
Kara - Orange, double-bladed
Connor - Purple, Blue shoto
Secondary characters:
North - Orange and Blue, dual wield
Josh - Green
Simon - Green, stolen
Carl - Purple
Alice - Blue
Luther - Green, dual wield
Rose - Yellow
Zlatko - Green, unstable
Hank - Blue, unstable
Amanda - Purple
Kamski - Yellow, double-bladed but short, Jedi Temple Guard style
Chloe - one Yellow, one Green, dual wield
Tertiary characters:
Leo - Green, unstable
Lucy - White
John - Blue
Jerry - Yellow
Ralph - Blue, unstable
Adam - Blue
Sixty - one Red, one Purple
Fowler - Green
Gavin - Blue, favours blaster
Chris - Blue
Daniel - was Blue, corrupted to Red
Captain Allen - Blue, favours blaster
Shaolin Being - Orange, unstable
Echo and Ripple (lesbian Tracis) - Blue
Rupert - Green
Nines - Purple, double-bladed, Inquisitor-style hilt (thank Grey for the Inquisitor Nines image I'm in love with)

Detroit Become Human is such a flawed game. I just got done playing it, and in some parts it was downright triggering. But I really like your blog, and a lot of the fandom, that see through the "pacifism is the answer to oppression" bullshit the game tries to shove down our throats, and have good takes in general about the characters and the storyline. Maybe you could offer your two cents? It still makes me wonder if it's right of me to engage in the fandom, even like this. I'm not black, or jewish, which were the two groups most attacked by this game's depiction and appropriation of thsir struggles. I don't feel I have the right to "reclaim" this game (is that the word?), even if I have subversive takes to it.
honestly anon, im very flattered and honored to be asked this, but i have to say i dont have any solid answers much less right answers about this :( i knew DBH has oodles of problems since release, ive been heavily criticising it myself since then, but for some unknown reason ive gotten pretty hyperfixated on it (i only played it because i got it for free, i can at least say id never hand my money over to the original creators), and i can only say my view on this (and most media of this genre), and its that i think it can be a constructive thing to criticise media from whatever background you have (?). i consider myself a huge hater because almost every media i like ill do exactly this, ill enjoy stories and aspects of it but basically go through a looking glass to each "social issue problem" (idk what to call it, sorry) i can spot to keep myself updated i guess? i dont always discuss it to not be the party pooper though
i came to tumblr also because it seems to be the most open to this, talking about the bad not just of the story but the choices made along bringing this game to life. for DBH in particular my thoughts are that there are a lot of good points it either accidentally made or just about missed the opportunity to do in regards of technology with capitalism, humanity's desensitization to abuse towards human-like things, and sometimes i try analysing why the horrible parts even exist or what makes them horrible if that makes sense? for example i may be wrong, but the North x Josh rivalry sort of came off to me as pitting two oppressed groups against each other as almost a test of your own morals, would you as the player rather side with a sexually traumatised 'angry' white woman or a violently abused 'calm' black man? when this is a mechanic that doesnt make sense, with the fucked up mind of the producers behind this, it wouldnt really be a big shock if it was the case. i also think its incredibly ableist in its methods, the old disabled man keeps yearning for his death and musing about humans being far inferior for their "fragile existence", and the game visibly intends for you to believe him "wise" for this, while i think it not only shows their ableist beliefs, it isnt necessarily an unbelievable character? a bitter, once abled bodied healthy and wealthy man suddenly deprived of some of his "liberty" would clearly become nihilistic once hes got just one of his priviledges stripped from him, imo
i also am appreciative of recreational work, if im being frank! derivative works are something i personally really really enjoy, since im pretty bad at inventing things from scratch? and ive seen fix its from people that basically take some of the monstrosities in the game and either recontextualise them or reframe them way better
in conclusion, im too biased to give you a good answer, so my middle of the road answer is always "enjoy things but with a critical mind and avoid giving money as much as possible" :/

reading up on dbh lore and character analyses is all fun and great until you cant enjoy a good portion of fanfics anymore because of their portrayal of markus and north, in which "peaceful protest" markus clashes with an overly bitchy and violent north, they completely disregard any of her backstory/the reasons why she might feel the anger towards humans that she does, and also a COMPLETE failure of recognition of the fact that she's Literally Correct in the sense that the "violent revolution" path saves more android lives. and the stories just stick with markus being the Good Justice Guy and north being the Mean Bitchy Woman and nothing much deeper than that and it's just like
Tumblr media
like,,,,,,,,,, i know i cant expect everyone to have hours to dump into this shit like my unemployed ass but also come on man ,,,,,,,,
anyways justice for north's character 2kforever, jfc
