Hollows travel the wilderness in small packs, using their life-sapping ability to hunt prey. It's not entirely clear if they were once human, but they act and look like other forms of undead, just... much taller than the others. Be wary if you find a hollow. They aren't extremely dangerous when numbers are against them, but the rest of the pack probably isn't far away.
I homebrewed a monster for D&D: the hollow! A beast that, while not overtly powerful, becomes a threat when it uses its signature ability to reduce its enemies' stamina.
I considered just using exhaustion mechanics, but I don't feel that appropriately reflects what I wanted of the ability.
This monster is heavily inspired by the Apathy, a kind of demon from the show RWBY. They are notorious for an entire pack having once gotten stuck in the sewer system of a village and killing them all because they were too tired to leave their beds.

Campaign Building 1 - Starting at Square One
Tumblr media
Hullo, Gentle Readers, and welcome to our new series of articles - Campaign Building. For the last two years, I shared my tips about world building, and we built up the Beyond the Borderlands setting. But a world is really only the backdrop against which stories are told. Now we're going to dig in and put together some of the basics for purposes of running an actual campaign.
Before we can start making decisions about our campaign, I thought I'd begin by outlining some of the elements that will come together to make a good campaign. And just like when you create a world, you can tackle a campaign from a macro perspective or a micro perspective.
For first time DMs, the micro perspective might be preferable. With this approach, you're putting together the elements you need right away, so that you can start playing. All you might need is a small village to act as the PCs' home base, a map of the surrounding wilderness, a few plot hooks, and maybe a small, nearby dungeon. If your campaign is going to be more of a dungeon exploration campaign, rather than having some kind of overarching plot, you might never need more than this.
I personally prefer a macro approach. In this case, while you'll need all of the things in the micro approach before you start playing, you also have a larger idea of what the campaign is going to be about. For example, my current campaign started with the concept of a fractured alliance that was suddenly confronted with a world shaking danger - the Tarrasque. How would they react? Could they get over earlier distrust in order to reunite? How would the PCs have affected the world over 16-17 levels of gameplay? From there, ideas around Tharizdun, an apocalyptic cult, and a PC's family member being part of said cult all began to develop.
I think that, just like we did with our setting, coming up with a Title and a Theme is a good way of getting the overall feel of a campaign. Obviously, a title like The Freebooters of Greyhawk City is going to suggest a different kind of story than The Angel of Chaos. One sounds like a Conan inspired tale of adventure and plunder, and the other sounds like a more central-villain driven story of danger and horror.
The theme of my current campaign might be best summed up as "Home town heroes made good", "Rebuilding from the ruins", and "What do you do when faced with doomsday?" They definitely set some of the feel of the story. Even though the Second Witching War was three-hundred years ago, the Seven Kingdoms still feels the effects of it, with distrust and intense nationalism now ruling after a long period of alliance. The players started as the local heroes of a small village, and they still very much have ties to that place. Because their adventures have called them to at first national and than trans-national attention, they have essentially set themselves up as a group that members of the various kingdoms trust. This has allowed them to begin to mend some of the alliances that were shatter at the end of the war. Which is a good thing, because with the Tarrasque now rampaging across the countryside, they're able to get those kingdoms to work together to try and stop it.
For the campaign I'm going to develop in these articles, I'm kind of liking the title Angel of Chaos. I plan to develop it for my Beyond the Borderlands setting, so that title makes me think of some powerful Chaos entity that might be about to be unleashed on the Realm. For themes, I'm thinking I might work with "Small town heroes" again, as well as "A light in the darkness", "the Enemy among us", and "Into the unknown". The players will be from a very small town indeed, located close to the fabled Keep on the Borderlands. In the initial adventure, they will realize that there is a plot to remove the Castellan of the Keep, and they will move to prevent the light of the Keep from being snuffed out by the agents of this Angel of Chaos. They will have to be careful, as agents of Chaos will be among those that should be their allies, and, ultimately, they'll be heading deeper into the Borderlands to confront these agents more directly.
Alright, well there's a start. Next time, we'll look at the home-base we want for our PCs at the beginning, as well as the first adventures.

Today's item is... Unique.
This cute little thing is called the Spite Sprite. When the person who is attuned to this anklet dies, the pixie charm self destructs. The explosion takes up a 70 foot sphere centered on the person wearing the anklet. The explosion sheds blinding light and deafening roars for an additional 200 feet, and anything in the sphere must make a dex save with disadvantage. On a failed save the target takes 7d10+70 force damage, and half as much on a successful save. They are reduced to dust if their hit points drop to 0.
Additionally, you may activate this effect at any time you have at least 10 hit points and have not made a death save in 24 hours. If you do so, you sacrifice your life in order to target the last person to have damaged you with this effect instead. They fail the saving throw and take maximum damage as long as they are on the same plane of existence as you. If they are not, nothing happens to you or them.

The Island Kingdoms of Rionom!
My custom setting for a 5e campaign for my friends. Made the map using inkarnate, not everything is to scale and doesn't nearly have enough towns on it to be accurate, but I really like how this turned out.
I may just start blogging about this campaign cause I really do like the stuff I've been making up.
(And if I do somehow get notes on this, yes, the kingdoms are named after regions from Pokemon Ranger games, my creativity for names only goes so far haha)
