not me thinking about sweaty slightly muddy Eddie dealing with this guy who they’re shocking back to life and how thats an interesting parallel/ metaphor for the the well of it all and how that was the moment Eddie was (metaphorically) shocked back to life - how that was the moment when he could’ve given up but chose to fight to live and move forward - how that was the moment he decided to change his will and how they still haven’t talked about all of it. How something like this where Eddie comes face to face with some aspect of his trauma it pushes things forward for him.

9-1-1 Season 6 - Constructive Criticisms #15
Buddie: Buck & Eddie
FULL DISCLOSURE:  Buck and Eddie’s relationship is the MAIN reason why I watch 9-1-1.
DISCLAIMER: THERE ARE THREE SEPARATE POSTS ABOUT BUCK, EDDIE, CHRIS AND BUDDIE.  The reason for this is because there was a lot of information to cover and the attempt to combine it into a single post, like those completed for the other main characters and ‘ships’, wasn’t feasible since one post for them and their family would’ve been too long.  Therefore, their posts are numbered as follows: Evan “Buck” Buckley - #13, Edmundo “Eddie” Diaz and Christopher “Chris” Diaz - #14 and “Buddie” -  #15.  Each of these posts are identically tagged because they include information that’s related to all of them.
This is a LONG POST.
__________________
Buddie is the “ship” name for Evan “Buck” Buckley and Edmundo “Eddie” Diaz.  It’s a portmanteau or a combination of their first names as it combines the first two letters of ‘Bu’ in Buck with the last four letters of ‘ddie’ in Eddie or Bu + ddie = Buddie.  Back in 2018, Ryan Guzman, the actor who plays the character of Eddie Diaz, created the name of the ship during a social media conversation with his co-star Oliver Stark who plays Buck and the ship name for Buck and Eddie’s pending CANON relationship has been called ‘Buddie’ ever since.  In addition to the ‘ship’ name Buddie, when the letters ‘pher’ from Christophers’ name is added, the Buckley-Diaz Family’s portmanteau ‘ship’ name becomes ‘Buddipher’ or Bu + ddi + pher = Buddipher.
Even though Buck and Eddie are NOT a CANON COUPLE (yet), they are the MOST POPULAR SHIP ON 9-1-1.  Also, the Buckley-Diaz Family is popular too and most viewers’ comments include information on how much they like to see Buck, Eddie and Chris spend time together on-screen.  Eddie is Chris’ biological father and currently Buck is Chris’ legal guardian (in the event of Eddie’s death, Buck will become Chris’ guardian).  All three of them are main characters and in previous seasons, most of their storylines involved each other.  Even when Eddie and Buck were dating other people, they continued to have Buckley-Diaz Family moments on-screen.
But something changed at the end of season 4 and even though Buck, Eddie and Chris occasionally shared the screen together as the Buckley-Diazes, the time allotted for it became VERY LIMITED.  In 5A, the three of them shared the screen once in 5x2 and in 5B, they shared the screen together in 5x14 (5x11 doesn’t count because Taylor was there and 5x13 doesn’t count either since all three of them weren’t shown together.  Reminder, Chris called Buck and after he arrived, they were in the hallway together until Buck broke down Eddie’s bedroom door.  Chris wasn’t shown again with Buck and Eddie until 5x14 when they went to Equine Therapy).  In season 6, they were shown together once during 6A and two times in 6B (in 6x11 while Buck was in the hospital, Eddie brought Chris into his room while he was still in the ICU but Hen was there on the other side and in 6x13 they were together in the loft).
When Buck woke up from his coma, episode 6x13 “Mixed Feelings” included A LOT of Buck and Eddie, Buck and Chris and the Buckley-Diaz Family but they were not shown together for the remainder of the season.  Buck and Eddie barely talked with each other during the finale and they were both put in relationships with one-dimensional women the same way they were during season 4.
My fifteenth set of “constructive criticisms” regarding the Buddie ship and the Buckley-Diaz Family in season 6 are included below the cut.  Please note criticizing a TV show is NOT a bad thing especially since TV critics have been doing it for decades.  Constructive criticisms are designed to help make something better and they are VERY different from negativity.  A person can offer criticisms about a form of entertainment they spend their time watching and not be negative about it the same way two people can agree to disagree on a topic.  Just because one person liked the season, they shouldn’t expect others to feel the way they do because everyone has their own opinions.  Simply put, two people can have different opinions about 9-1-1 and those opinions can COEXIST since they are not mutually exclusive.
If reading criticisms about the TV show 9-1-1 upsets you, then don’t read below the cut.
             Warning! ⚠️“Constructive Criticisms” Ahead!⚠️
Please note:  Instead of unraveling the mess that was season 6 for Buck, Eddie, Chris, Buddie and The Buckley-Diaz Family via my blog posts, I decided to write a season 7 speculation multi-chapter fanfic and it’s already available on AO3.  It was the most effective and therapeutic way I chose to deal with how much I HATED the way season 6 ended because I absolutely refuse to speculate about what will happen in season 7 on my blog (AO3 link here - an account is needed to read the fic).
Buddie’s relationship
“Buck and Eddie share a once in a lifetime, love of their lives, soulmate type of love that transcends space and time. They’re madly in love and they can’t live or breathe without each other!”  (Direct quote from the notes section in two of my fanfics titled “Believe Half of What You See” and “You Mean the World to Me” fanfics).
Buck and Eddie have been in love with each other for the last five years! FULL STOP!  They’re EMOTIONALLY INTIMATE with each other and they share a deep and intense bond that is NOT brotherly, platonic or friendly because it’s actually ROMANTIC, SENSUAL AND SEXUAL.  They’ve always been attracted to one another and that was evident in 2x1 while they were standing in front of each other in the firehouse’s gym.  They had a disagreement but Buck’s mouth was open and he was breathless while Eddie bit his bottom lip at him.  In 2x3 their feelings for each other started growing and by the time they were both single at the end of season 2, their RELATIONSHIP had matured and reached a level of ROMANTIC INTIMACY that couldn’t be matched by any of the people they would date in the future and that fact was still true at the end of 6x18.
Neither of them have shared that level of INTIMACY with any of the people they’ve dated.  There are some who confuse sex with intimacy but the truth is they are not the same.  Two people can have SEX but it does NOT equal intimacy since they can participate in the act even when they don’t know each other.  Some people pay for it and others just do it and don’t want any strings attached and that’s ok because it’s not wrong but the act by itself doesn’t equal intimacy and that was illustrated in season 5 with Buck and Taylor for the entirety of their relationship.  They were literally sleeping in the same bed but since they didn’t know each other, the longer they stayed together, the more clothes they wore whenever they were together and it’s evident that they couldn’t be emotionally naked around each other because it made them uncomfortable.
Buck and Eddie kept all their clothes on in 3x9 and they never touched but the way they looked at each other and acted in THE KITCHEN SCENE was the most SENSUAL, SEXUAL AND EROTIC SCENE EITHER OF THEM HAVE EVER HAD ON-SCREEN.
They know, see and talk to each other
Eddie is the ONLY person who truly knows Evan/Buck.  In 5x4, Eddie told Buck that he didn’t know Maddie the way Chimney knows her and in 6x12, it was CLEAR Maddie doesn’t know Buck the way Eddie knows him.  Since Eddie knew Buck would talk about the way he was feeling when he was ready, he decided not to participate in Maddie’s ‘Operation Buck up Buttercup’ plan.  He simply waited and Buck eventually showed up at his house and immediately fell asleep on their couch after he sat down.  He listened to Buck when he said, “Please don’t ask me how I am” and instead of pushing him to talk, he simply replied, “Ok.” Then he waited until Buck woke up and entered the kitchen before he asked if he was allowed to ask him how he was doing.
The same way Eddie’s the only person who knows Buck, Buck is the ONLY person who can make Eddie talk.  He did it in 3x9 when Frank couldn’t do it and he did it in 5x2 when he wouldn’t leave him alone until he told him about his panic attacks.  Reminder, Ana AVOIDED talking to Eddie about them because she knew her presence was a trigger but Buck wouldn’t rest until he found out why Eddie acted the way he did when she showed up unannounced at the firehouse.  He also got Eddie to talk after his breakdown in 5x13.  Prior to that night, the only person who saw Eddie cry was Bobby in 3x8 but even he didn’t see everything Buck saw.   Buck got Eddie to open up again in 5x14 while they were at Equine Therapy and they talked again in 6x15 but their roles were reversed because Eddie got Buck to talk.
The fact that Eddie and Buck truly and intimately know the other one combined with the fact that they’re in love with each other are only two of the reasons why THEY ARE PERFECT FOR EACH OTHER.
By the end of season 6, some viewers were and still are waiting for them to confess their love but for whatever reason 9-1-1 continued to delay the inevitable.  Previously, it seemed like Buck and Eddie were going to go CANON in season 5, after the shooting happened at the end of season 4 but it was delayed.  Also, the way things played out at the beginning of 6B, it seemed like they were going to go CANON by the end of 6x18 but once again, it was DELAYED.  It doesn’t make sense because the truth is, they’re life partners who’ve been co-parenting Chris so the show continuously adding recurring characters who’ll end up biting the dust like all the others is a tired tactic that needs to end.  The truth is, it doesn’t matter if they introduce more recurring characters as love interests because NONE of them will ever compare and be able to love Buck and Eddie the way they deserve to be loved since only they can do that for each other.
Buddie’s past
Buck and Eddie’s relationship is built on TRUST and it was the first thing they established between them in 2x1 after they removed a grenade from Charle #1’s leg.  It was the first time Buck stepped in with Eddie because he volunteered to join him in the ambulance.  Then in 2x2, Eddie told Buck about Chris, Buck replied that he loves kids and by the end of 2x3 the Buckley-Diaz Family began when Buck drove Eddie to pick Chris up from school after the earthquake.
The advice Bobby gave Buck in season 1 about the right way to treat someone when he’s in a relationship didn’t work on Abby but it did work on Eddie.  After they started their partnership, Buck stepped all the way in with Eddie and he eventually became a second dad to Chris.  They’ve been co-parenting Chris for years and everyone at the 118 knows about it but no one says anything.
They literally had a domestic relationship argument inside of the supermarket in front of the 118 in 3x5 and NO ONE tried to stop them.  They’ve been at the forefront of each other’s lives since they became partners and the show has always compared their significant others against the other one.  Eddie gets petty whenever Buck dates someone else and Buck gets jealous and ignores Eddie’s love interests.  Their behaviors are NOT common for people who are just best friends, bros or co-workers.
Buck and Eddie were both single for 17 out of the 18 episodes included in season 6 and it was evident their relationship was about to become more when Eddie’s position in Buck’s life changed in 6x11 after he stepped in front of Bobby at the hospital.  Also, Eddie was physically missing from Buck’s coma dream which means his position in Buck’s life was about to change too.
That’s love!!!
Buck’s definition of love
Buck defined love in 5x18 during his conversation with Maddie.  He said, “Is that really love? Right, shouldn’t it be, when you’re at your worst, they’re at their worst, you have every reason to give up and you still decide you want to try again?”  The only person who fits his definition of it is EDDIE but he didn’t end the season in a relationship with Eddie because he passively fell into whatever it is he thought he had with someone he met for a few minutes at a live funeral.  Let’s fact check his definition against Natalia to see if she measures up (She DOESN’T but let’s do it for kicks and giggles anyway).
Was Natalia there for him when he was at his WORST?  HELL NO!
Has he been there for her when she was at her WORST?  Double HELL NO!
Did they go through anything where they had to decide to try again?  HELL NO and ABSOLUTELY NOT!
Since Natalia doesn’t fit Buck’s definition of love, WTF was their BS relationship even supposed to be?  How did Buck go from defining love in 5x18 to completely forgetting what he said in 6x18?  It would have made more sense if he would have ended the season SINGLE and searching for a NEW couch on his own.  All 9-1-1 did with Buck’s last scene in 6x18 was piss off and anger their faithful viewers who continued to watch through all the other CANON Buddie delays.  So, if season 7 begins with Buck and Natalia still together, it’s likely they’ll lose even more viewers than they lost in seasons 5 and 6 combined.  Most of the audience was already creeped out by her actions since her reason for being there was supposed to HELP HIM ACCEPT HIS DEATH.  But she crossed the ethical line with him the same way Dr. Wells did in 1x2 which made her irredeemable.
What Eddie’s heart wants
Eddie’s heart wants someone who will love both him and Chris and the truth is BUCK is the only person who fulfills not only who Eddie wants but also what he needs.  He was married to Shannon but she didn’t want to be a wife or a mother and she admitted it when they were at the restaurant in 2x17.  Ana only wanted to keep up appearances so she could get married before she turned 30 years old.  She didn’t love Eddie because she was in love with “the idea of being in love” the same way he was.  Marisol is a DIYer who DOESN’T WANT ANYONE’S HELP and that was evident in 6x5 when she was introduced.  Eddie’s a caregiver, it’s in his nature to take care of people, hence the reason why he’s a medic and he takes care of Buck all the time.  After he was shot and bleeding out, he literally asked Buck if he was hurt in 4x14.  Reminder, Marisol didn’t want her brother’s help but she relented when he kept pushing which is why things won’t work between them since Eddie needs to be able to take care of the person that he’s in a relationship with.  Reminder, Shannon was controlling like Helena and Ana was passive aggressive and wouldn’t speak up or listen to Eddie.  If season 7 starts with him and Marisol in a relationship, it will meet the same fate as his previous ones because Buck is the only person who listens to Eddie, he pushes him enough to make Eddie talk but not to the point where they’re arguing, he allows Eddie to take care of him and he gives him the space and time he needs to express himself.
They’re enough for each other
In 3x8, Eddie told Bobby he wasn’t enough for Shannon and in 4x14 Buck told Taylor he spent a long time feeling like he wasn’t enough but the fact is they’re ENOUGH FOR EACH OTHER.
Eddie knows Evan/Buck which means he knows all of Buck’s insecurities, the things he worries about and he’s the ONLY person who truly SEES him.  Eddie knows and sees everything about Buck and he won’t leave but all the women Buck dated did once they realized there was more to him than him just being their boy toy.  The difference between Eddie and all of them is Eddie doesn’t just see Buck the firefighter like Abby, Ali, Taylor and now Natalia did because he sees Buck the man, the lover, the father and his forever.   He takes care of him and Buck lets him do it.  He gives Buck the emotional intimacy he’s craved his whole life and he doesn’t make him feel bad about himself.  He builds him up with his words while all the women Buck has dated either abandoned, demeaned and/or tore him down.  They saw Buck as a good time but Eddie wants him for a lifetime and that’s all Buck’s ever wanted.
Buck KNOWS Eddie to his core and he can tell when Eddie’s hiding something, hence the reason why he’s always the one who has pulled Eddie out of traumatic situations (he pulled him underneath the ladder truck in 4x14, he pulled him out of the dark recesses of his mind in 5x13 when he called his name and he pulled him out of the camper van in 6x18).  The things the women Eddie was married to or dated ignored about him, Buck doesn’t.  He makes Eddie talk about everything that bothers him and he truly cares about Eddie’s well-being.  He’s not just looking for Eddie to be a piece of arm candy like Ana did, he won’t make Eddie carry all the weight of their relationship like Shannon did and he’ll let Eddie help and he won’t try to make him do it all on his own the way Marisol will probably do.  Eddie wants to be in a relationship with the person who loves him unconditionally and that’s Buck.
Shared Traumas
Buck and Eddie have almost lost each other too many times and based on their reactions to the possibility of losing each other or when they did lose the other one, it’s important to note no one will ever mean as much to them as they mean to each other.  Over the years, they’ve experienced a lot of traumas but they STILL HAVEN’T TALKED ABOUT THEM.
Buck had a ladder truck crush his leg in 2x18, he collapsed in Bobby and Athena’s backyard after he had an embolism in 3x1, Buck and Chris were caught in a Tsunami and they got separated in 3x1-3x3, Eddie was trapped in a well in 3x15 and Buck lost it on live TV with all of L.A. watching, Eddie was shot by a sniper in 4x13 and Buck crawled underneath a ladder truck to save him, they were held hostage in 5x6 by two escaped convicts and Buck thought Eddie had been shot again, Eddie had a mental breakdown in 5x13 but Buck broke down his bedroom door to get to him and Buck was struck by lightning in 6x10 and died for three minutes and seventeen seconds and Eddie climbed up the ladder without being harnessed in to save him after he had been CATAPULTED off the base when he was hit with the same bolt of lightning.  They’ve experienced all these shared traumas except they haven’t been allowed to discuss them in CANON.  Is there a reason for this?  Probably and it’s possible they haven’t talked about it because the show is waiting to make them a CANON couple.  Reminder, after 3x15, Eddie changed his will and named Buck to be Chris’ legal guardian but they haven’t discussed it since the reveal in 4x14 (detailed post linked here).
Therefore the question is, when are Buck and Eddie going to TALK ABOUT ALL OF THEIR SHARED TRAUMAS?  It’s been more than five years since the ladder truck explosion, four years since Buck’s embolism and the Tsunami, three and a half years since the well, more than two years since the shooting, in October 2023 it will have been two years since the hostage situation and in March 2024 it will have been one year since Buck died after the lightning strike.  It’s time for them to talk about these things so they can confess their love for each other.
Dating
Full Disclosure: It doesn’t matter how the show tries to spin it, Buck and Eddie went on a DATE in 6x13.
In 6x17, Buck told Eddie that he sucks at dating but his comment was oxymoronic because Buck sucks at dating too since he’s NEVER HAD A SUCCESSFUL DATE WITH A WOMAN.  Dates allow two people who are interested in each other to truly get to know one another.  They start out casual but the more they get to know each other, the more intimately involved they become.  Spending time together and participating in activities is a date which means Buck and Eddie were on a date when they went to play poker.
Buck and Eddie have had several dates over the years including the time they spent together in 2x10, 3x9, 4x3, 5x14 and 6x13.  Even though Chris was with them on most of their outings since they went there as a family, the fact is EVERY TIME they were together during those instances, they ended up spending some time ALONE TOGETHER (looking at 2x10 Santa Klaus visit, 3x9 kitchen scene and 5x14 Equine Therapy).  In 6x13 things were different because it was the first time CHRIS WASN’T PRESENT, therefore they went on an actual date when they went to play poker and Eddie didn’t panic and Buck didn’t immediately go to the physical like he’s done in the past.  They’re comfortable when they're together which means they don’t suck at dating when they date each other (related post here).
Buddie in season 6
Missing
There were several times in season 6 where Buck should have been present with Eddie or vice versa but they were missing.
In 6x5 Eddie and Buck weren’t shown when Eddie took Hoover the dog to Buck’s loft even though all the other hand offs were shown.
In 6x7, when Eddie was talking to Felisa about the Tsunami, he didn’t mention Buck but he should have since Buck and Chris went through it together.
In 6x8, Buck wasn’t there while Eddie was helping Chris get ready for the dance but Carla was which didn’t make any sense at all.
In 6x10, Eddie was missing from the call the 118 was dispatched to with the woman who gave birth during the car accident even though he was at the firehouse with all of them before they left.
In 6x11, Eddie was missing from Buck’s coma dream but Buck NEVER ADMITTED WHY HE WASN’T THERE.
In 6x13, Eddie wasn’t there while Buck and Chris were baking cookies and the reason was never provided.
After they were together at the cemetery in 6x15, they weren’t shown hanging out and the distance they had in 6A returned because the show was preparing to set them up in those lackluster relationships with one-dimensional women.
Themes
Season sex or season six was filled with themes and since the majority of 6A and 6B focused on Buck and his gazillion storylines, it’s evident that more than 90% of those themes were connected to him and his journey to finding who and what he wants.  Reminder, in 6x4 he told Connor and Kameron he didn’t know what he wants but that was a lie.  There were two overarching themes of family and fatherhood (discussed in the Buckley-Diaz Family section below) but in addition to those themes, there were others included throughout the season for Buck and Eddie, i.e., hearts, happiness, lies, chances, cheating, secrets and death.
Hearts
Buck’s and Eddie’s hearts have been intertwined throughout the last five seasons but in season 6, they shared another traumatic albeit poignant experience when Buck’s heart STOPPED and he DIED in 6x10.  Similar to the way Buck saw his world shatter when Eddie was shot in front of him in 4x13 which caused him to enter a catatonic state of shock; Eddie saw his world crumble in 6x10 when he looked up and saw Buck’s limp body hanging from the aerial after they both were struck by the same bolt of lightning.
Unlike 4x13 - 4x14 when they were with a different firehouse, in 6x10 they were with their found family and everyone saw Buck’s body hanging from the aerial before Eddie did but it was Eddie who called Buck’s name first even though Bobby, Hen and Chimney were all on the ground looking up at him while he was lifelessly suspended in the air.  Reminder, Eddie had been CATAPULTED OFF THE BASE OF THE AERIAL because he got struck by the same bolt of lightning and it took him a few seconds to get up so if Buck dying and Eddie being the one to restart his heart wasn’t about Buck and Eddie then WTF were those scenes at the end of 6x10 and the beginning of 6x11 supposed to mean?
Dr. Salazar was Eddie’s cardiologist in 5x1, she was Hen and Chimney’s in 5x17 and she was Buck’s in 6x12.  But the things she said to them during their meetings with her were important because they highlighted the difference between Hen and Chimney’s work partnership when compared with Buck and Eddie’s relationship.  Hen and Chimney both said their hearts were fine and they didn’t need to stay overnight but Eddie thought his panic attack was a heart attack and Buck’s heart stopped so she kept running tests to make sure he was ok.
Lies and misrepresentations
The wife in 6x2 lied to her husband because she was cheating on him, Buck lied to Connor and Kameron in 6x4 when he said he didn’t know what he wanted, Eddie probably lied in 6x12 when he told Buck he didn’t remember anything about the shooting and he lied again in 6x14, when he said, “I do not panic!”  Buck and Eddie hid the real reason why they went to play poker in 6x13.  Buck was pretending to be fine even though he wasn’t and he said it was for the sake of everyone else in 6x15. When he said he had to be the same old Buck, mostly for the sake of everyone else, Eddie told him he didn’t have to be anything for anybody.
Why was Poker included and misrepresented in 6x13 like it was a numbers game when it’s clearly a game about bluffing to win?  What was the goal behind Buck and Eddie playing poker with Captain Jeshan Mehta, Chief Miranda Williams and Julie Rosen when Buck couldn’t use his math skills to win?
All these lies and the bluffing meant something or else it wouldn’t have been included in season 6.
Cheaters
The wife in 6x2 was cheating on her husband with her neighbor.  In 6x14, the bodybuilder was caught cheating when he put motor oil in his biceps and Buck said,  “Nobody likes a cheater!” even though he was the one who cheated in 5x11.  What was the purpose of all the cheating if they didn’t intend to do anything with it?
Chances
Buck and Eddie weren’t cheating when Buck answered the question in 6x13 while they were in the firehouse but they were betting to win money and after Eddie collected the winnings he said, “A fool and his money are soon parted” but the reason for it was never explained.  The A-shift members who betted against Buck were taking a chance but they lost so who knows why that scene was included in the episode.
While it’s true, lightning doesn’t strike the same place twice, Eddie reminded Buck of that in 6x15 but Buck has continued to live in a dream world where he pictures everything is the way he imagines but it’s FAKE just like it was in his coma dream.  He doesn’t know Natalia and she doesn’t know him and he’s pretending to be fine for the sake of everyone else.  Buck taking a chance with her will end badly and Eddie foreshadowed it when he told him dating someone that he rescued from a call never ends well.
Eddie took a chance at the end of 6x18 as well but he doomed his own chances with Marisol when he told Buck about dating someone they rescued from a call.
Happiness
Buck started searching for happiness at the end of 6x2 when he thought Lev didn’t give him the answer to it before he died but he did, it’s just Buck misunderstood the assignment AGAIN.  Eddie and Chris are Buck’s secret to happiness but for some reason he keeps missing who’s right in front of him.
So the question is, how many more old men are going to have to die until he gets it?  He talked with Thomas in 2x8 and Thomas told him “You don’t find it son, you make it” meaning he’s supposed to make love, make a family and make happiness with the person he wants to be with (Eddie).  In 3x16, Red told Buck not to end up with regrets by putting his job first (right after the well when Eddie changed his will) and in 6x2 Lev told him “I think I get it now” right before he died but Buck thought he didn’t tell him the secret to happiness.  He told him how the life he lived was all a blur because he did what everyone expected him to do.  Bobby counts as another old man because he was dead in Buck’s coma dream and he told him in 6x11 “Aww kid, if what matters to you most is how other people see you… then you haven’t learned a DAMN thing”.
That’s why Buck can’t be happy!  He keeps looking past the ANSWERS (Eddie and Chris) who are right in front of him because he still cares about the way people see him.  Therefore, Bobby was correct since Buck hasn’t learned a damn thing.
Secrets
Buck didn’t tell Eddie about the sperm donation in 6x4.
Chris wouldn’t tell Eddie about his crush in 6x8.
Eddie didn’t tell Buck he was pissed about the sperm donation in 6x9.
Buck didn’t tell Eddie about the way he was feeling about dying and Eddie didn’t tell Buck what he remembered about the shooting in 6x12.
Why was everyone in the Buckley-Diaz Family hiding and keeping secrets?
Death
Buck hasn’t dealt with the fact that he died and Eddie hasn’t dealt with it either.  Therefore, since Eddie’s the only person who knows and SEES Buck and he knows WHO HE IS, in 6x12, he said, “You died, Buck” instead of saying “Buck, you died” like Maddie did in 6x12 and Bobby did in 6x14.  Eddie knows Buck to his core and Buck’s too afraid to look at it because he doesn’t want his heart broken (detail post linked here).
The Buckley-Diaz Family or Buddipher
Family and Fatherhood
The overarching themes for season 6 were family and fatherhood and even though they applied to Bobby and Buck’s father son relationship and Buck’s biological and found families, they also applied to Buck’s, Eddie’s and Chris’ Buckley-Diaz Family relationship because they're their own family outside of the 118 and they chose each other.
Family
Buck’s biological parents were in 6x10 and 6x11 but their presence seemed awkward and it was probably set up that way for a reason.  Buck has a found family in the 118 but he also wants a family of his own and he’s had one for the last five years with Eddie.  Their family dynamic was established in 2x2 and Buck and Eddie built their family together.  They’re the family they chose so it’s evident all the comments that were made about family throughout the season were related to Buck, Eddie and Chris.
In 6x9 Maddie said, “A family lived here” and Chimney replied, “I think a family should live here again”.
In 6x10 Eddie told Buck, “You are a real family” after Buck said being with Maddie, Chimney, Jee-Yun, his parents and the Hans was like they were a real family.
In 6x13 Eddie said, “It’s a different kind of family” when he and Buck were walking through the kitchen to go play poker.
In 6x13 Chimney said, “There are all kinds of family” after Rhonda Fitzsimmons used her nephew to gain access to their home so she could collect those money orders that she had mailed to their address.
Fatherhood
Eddie’s already a father to Chris and even though Buck doesn’t have any biological children of his own, he does have a child since Chris is his son too.  Over the years, Buck’s been shown to be a parent to Chris and he and Eddie have been co-parenting him for the last five years.  Chris looks like Buck the same way Buck looks like Bobby and those casting choices were made for a reason.  Buck wants to be a dad and he has been one for years, it just seems like he’s too scared to admit it.
In 2x10, the elf said, “You two have an adorable son” and Buck said thank you instead of clarifying Chris was Eddie’s son. In 3x2, Buck came out of the water holding Chris (his son) after Eddie took Chris to Buck so he could take care of him (Reminder this happened after Shannon passed and Buck's and Chris’ relationship strengthened over the hiatus) during the Tsunami.
Eddie told Buck in 3x3, “And what you think you failed.  I’ve failed that kid more times than I can count and I’m his father.  But I love him (Chris) enough to never stop trying and I know you do too” and “There’s nobody in this world I trust with my son more than you”.
Chris asked Buck in 3x10 if he could spend Christmas with him the same way a child asks one of their parents (reminder Chris told Eddie in 2x10 he wished for his mother to come back well after she died, Chris wanted to spend Christmas with Buck since Eddie had to work).
Buck was panicking in 3x18 when Eddie told the 118 that Chris wanted to go to Summer Camp for two weeks.
In 4x8, Chris ran away to Buck’s loft when Eddie started dating again and Buck told him he wasn’t going anywhere.
Buck and Eddie answered Chimney’s question “No!” in unison in 4x10 about both parents being good cops.
Buck was the one to talk to Chris after Eddie got shot in 4x14, there was no other option and no one questioned it not even Eddie’s girlfriend.
In 4x14, Eddie told Buck he changed his will a whole year before he told him about it.  THIS WAS A LOVE CONFESSION but like everything else, Buck missed it.
In 5x2, Eddie said Buck takes Chris to the zoo all the time.
In 5x10, Chris had a nightmare about Shannon because Buck wasn’t there for Christmas like he had been in the past.
In 5x13, Chris called Buck during Eddie’s breakdown instead of calling 9-1-1.
In 6x1, Chris and Buck were wearing the same colors when Chris told him it was weird that he didn’t have a couch (family).
In 6x7, Eddie PURPOSEFULLY didn’t say anything to Felisa about Buck even though everyone knows Buck was there in the Tsunami with Chris.
In 6x11, Chris made Carla take him to the hospital and he told Eddie he had to see Buck so he could talk to him.  When he stood by Buck’s bedside, he told him to come back.  Also, Chris was looking for BUCK in Buck’s coma dream when he asked, “Can you help me find my dad?” but Buck misunderstood.
In 6x13 Buck was literally baking cookies for Chris’ class without Eddie being in the loft with them.
Eddie’s reaction to the sperm donation
Eddie’s reaction to Buck’s comment during their four-way call in 6x9 about him being the official creator of new life was very LOUD.  Buck wants to be a dad (read Buck’s CC post) and Eddie wants Buck to be Chris’ second dad so Eddie’s reaction was very telling.  He didn’t like it and that’s why he almost had a panic attack after he dropped off the call. He literally hung up before anyone could tell him goodbye. But the show played it off and tried to make it seem like Eddie was ok with Buck’s decision in 6x10 when he clearly wasn’t in 6x9.  The audience never saw Buck and Eddie talk about Buck’s sperm donation and Eddie was never shown asking Buck about Connor and Kameron’s baby.
The Legal Guardianship
Eddie gave Buck a family and a son when he added him to his will.  Basically, he chose his family and legally established it a year before he told Buck about it.  Therefore, if it wasn’t for Eddie, Buck would be still (he is, cue coma dream) making everything about himself.  Eddie was the one who gave Buck a reason to stop being depressed in 3x1 when he took Chris to his loft.  He told him he might learn something and he did.  He gave him Chris again in 4x14 when he told him about his will and he told him he’s not expendable.  He’s the one who encouraged Buck and helped him to realize in 2x1 that he could have his back any day even though Buck spent most of the episode feeling threatened by him.  All of these are examples of Eddie giving Buck everything he wants but Buck keeps looking past it.  It's possible the show hasn’t let Buck and Eddie talk about the legal guardianship because they’re saving it for their relationship reveal (related post linked here)
The Couch
Eddie’s couch was used a metaphor for him and Buck’s pending relationship but the show decided to pull a whammy at the end of the season and let Buck ask Natalia to help him choose a new one.  In 6x1, Eddie literally told him “I think you mean your last two girlfriends came with couches” to correct Buck’s comment of “My last two couches came with girlfriends” but just like everything else, Buck missed what Eddie was trying to tell him.  Eddie already has a couch and Buck slept on it when he took care of Chris in 4x14 and he probably slept on it again after 5x13 when Eddie had his breakdown.  There have been several posts about Eddie’s couch and the significance of it so no further details are needed (posts linked here and here).
Final words about the couch.  Buck asking Natalia to help him pick a new couch was RIDICULOUS because her helping him find one is no different than when Ali helped him find the loft in 2x18.  He didn’t pick it out for himself since she would have an opinion about it so their relationship is doomed to end the same way his relationship with Ali’s did.  Basically, he ended up doing the same BS he’s done in the past.  That wasn’t his choice because if it was then she would have FIT HIS DEFINITION OF LOVE BUT SHE DOESN’T.
Buddie’s future
Only the decision makers know what the future holds for Buck and Eddie and the Buckley-Diaz Family since it appears the plan for Buck and Eddie to go CANON was halted especially since the finale ended up being a RUSHED, SLOPPY MESS that DIDN’T MAKE ANY NARRATIVE SENSE for any of the characters.  If it was delayed then it was interesting since Buck defined love in 5x18 and Eddie’s shown who his heart wants many times especially in 6x11, so what’s the hold up?
It’s been five years and in season 7 it will have been six years since Buck and Eddie met.  If they don’t intend to put them in a relationship then it’s TIME TO END THE CHARADE and stop stringing viewers along.  They’ve missed so many opportunities to put them together that it’s not even funny but for some reason they keep delaying it.  If they don’t return already in a relationship at the beginning of season 7, they should expect to lose even more viewers than they already have.  They lost over 1 million by the end of season 5, they lost more than 700,000 by the end of season 6 and after 6x18 aired, the comments on all social media platforms were predominantly negative and the majority of them were about the REDUNDANCY of Buck's and Eddie’s love interests.
If they're still planning to go CANON, based solely on everything that happened in season 6, it’s possible Buddie will go CANON offscreen and it’s also possible they’ll get married in Las Vegas (Eddie foreshadowed this in 6x13 before the poker game) and they aren’t going to tell anyone about it.  The show has the opportunity to do GROUNDBREAKING TELEVISION if they allow Buck and Eddie to become a CANON couple and it's likely it will be talked about for DECADES.  But it’s also possible they’ve waited too long and with everything else going on, they might have dug themselves into a hole they may not be able to get out of.
The start of season 7 will mark the sixth year since Buck and Eddie’s love of my life partnership began and since the show will NO LONGER air on FOX, the creators and showrunner(s) shouldn’t have any other reasons to keep them separated.  Airing a new season, on a different network, ABC, is going to give them a chance to fix everything they messed up at the end of season 6, especially since there will be a time jump.  They SHOULD NOT bring back any love interests for Buck and Eddie but they should let them ALREADY BE MARRIED and use flashbacks of the time they weren’t filming in the Fall to show how they got together.   That will remedy the foolery they used to end season 6 because the start of Season 7 is the time to make them CANON and stop with the delay tactics.
These are my criticisms regarding the Buddie ship and the individual characters included in the Buckley-Diaz Family and it’s the final “Constructive Criticisms” post for 9-1-1’s season 6.
I have a total of 15 CANON “Constructive Criticisms” and as of Wednesday, August 30, 2023, they’ve all been posted.  The topics were posted in a specific order that begins with the overall issues for season 6 so they can be referenced within the posts about individual characters and ships that followed them.

🔥 ed/ddie battle royale
OKAY so i am just going to go with The Eddies (Three): my opinions
Eddie Kaspbrak [IT]:
An interesting case, because I have never actually seen the miniseries, and while most of my fandoming has been movie-adjacent, my actual interest is completely from the book, because it's one of those ones where Stephen King is being very incredibly Stephen King, for better or worse. I think he writes the characters very well here.
Anyway: Eddie Kaspbrak is high-strung, dysfunctional, and honestly a bit mean. He's a lot of fun to write; he is, just generally, A Lot.
Eddie Munson [Stranger Things]
My babygirl. The quintessential deserved better. Another one who's a lot of fun to write because his internal narrative is all over the fucking place. I tend not to vibe with a lot of popular fanon for him, which I think places him in a way more Worldly place wrt to queer alternative culture than I realistically think he actually would have been at that age and in that environment.
Eddie Diaz [9-1-1]
Honestly my big semi-controversial opinion on this Eddie is that he's generally a lot sharper than fandom usually writes him. He's not unkind, but he tends to be blunt, direct, and unsentimental with how he shows his affection for the people he cares about. His love manifests in very practical ways, and he's often verbally unsympathetic even when he is being comforting.
(Send me a 🔥 and a topic and I'll give you my honest opinion)

So I’ve seen a few posts questioning why it’s always Eddie in fics that struggles (sometimes negatively) with his sexuality or experiences internalised homophobia, some of which vague that it’s hateful towards the character or follows the ‘trend’ of victimising/babying Buck. There are also posts I’ve seen that reference the same, but in relation to the actual show and the handling of Buddie or mlm relationships with Buck and Eddie in canon.
So I’m going to do what I did with my post about Eddie’s reactions (or lack thereof) being in character, and lay it out as factually as I can.
It is more in-character for Eddie to be the one to struggle or to have a difficult sexuality journey than it is for Buck.
Even the show, in not so many words, has said the same thing. We’ve already seen Buck in several scenarios where his sexuality is questioned, assumed or vaguely referenced, and in none of them does he have a negative or overtly reactive response.
Buck’s sexuality was outright assumed, twice, to his face. In the first instance with the Christmas Elf Lady he was openly confused but ultimately shrugged it off with a smile and compliment. In the scene with TK we see him react a little more expressively, but with no obvious negativity or unhappiness. Poor baby was just confused that his bid for friendship was being taken as flirting, explicitly by a homosexual male.
Eddie, however, has several character factors that would point towards a choppier journey with realising he isn’t heterosexual. To name a few:
His (explicitly stated and referenced) past relationships, love interests and current love interest are all female, although the same can be said for Buck.
On the subject of Buck; Eddie also isn’t shown to have any real friendships with men (or women) outside of the 118, and none as close-knit as Buck. Eddie also doesn’t behave with his male peers (such as Bobby, Chimney and Albert) the way he behaves with Buck. Contrary to this, Buck is referenced up until recently to have been a very social person outside of the 118, even thus far as to live with several other men prior to moving into Abby’s and then into his own apartment.
Eddie was brought up in a heavily Latino/Latinx family and lifestyle and presumably, community. It’s common for Latino/Latinx communities to expect men to comply with the ‘macho family man’ archetype, and there are multiple resources from Latino/Latinx people that review the toxic masculinity of the communities and culture. We see a reflection of this in Carlos from 911: Lonestar, where his family is accepting but in a dismissive way, so much so that he makes the decision to introduce his boyfriend as a work friend.
He served in the military. Now the military is notorious for being the most homophobic ‘gay for the stay’ community you’ll ever encounter. It’s kind of fine to jerk each other off behind the craft building while thinking of your wives, but if someone comes out as gay they could be outcast, given a vaguely or outright homophobic nickname and face the age old ‘you’re gay so you’re a predator/risk’ type of treatment. (I’m not saying everyone and every base is like this, but again there are plenty of resources available that document the institutional homophobia in military spaces.) In worst cases gay/bi+ men are bullied or forced out of the barracks, beaten or killed.
Canon extensively implies that Eddie is straight. We don’t get the same vagueing and hinting/joking that we do with Buck. The closest we’ve come is the livestream where several comments mentioned him and Buck as a couple, but we don’t see Eddie react to these or even potentially notice them. Every time crushes or love interests are explicitly presented to/for Eddie, they’re female. Ignoring any possible meta about camera and behaviour choices, Eddie is depicted exactly the same as the other heterosexual male characters of the show, such as Bobby and Chimney. Contrastingly, Buck is the only one who receives explicit reference to or vagueing towards his sexuality and relationships, especially with Eddie.
Relating to the point above; if Eddie is a closeted bi/pan/demi/gay+ man, then he’s lived as a straight man for years and it would be a colossal change for him to come out. It would mean coming out to his family (assuming he hasn’t already, and to the family that already thinks he can’t function without a wife), his friends and peers, it would mean dealing with the change in perception of him from his peers and adjusting various aspects of his life; not least, talking to Christopher about it too.
In Season 3 and 4 we also see Eddie struggle with moving on from Shannon, and I think it’s plausible that Eddie would feel it’s some kind of betrayal to her. Eddie would likely wonder if his sexuality aided to the collapse of their marriage and would likely also wonder about the impact it had on their chances of reconnecting and his relationships with Buck and Shannon, if Buddie is the pathway to Eddie’s sexuality exploration.
Now I’m not saying Eddie would go off-the-rails homophobic in the instance that he was put in a situation like the ones Buck has been in, but Eddie would definitely be in-character to have some form of mild crisis, fear or doubt about explicitly realising he’s attracted to a man.
Eddie would quite literally have to question his entire existence and past and explore this new part of his identity, whereas from what we’ve seen on screen thus far it’s far more likely that Buck is open to or has already considered his own sexuality. Buck is also easier going about new parts of his identity, which the show depicts through his ‘Buck 1.0′ style self-developments.
Also; it is perfectly plausible for someone to be completely fine with other people being LGBT+ but to struggle with a change or discovery of their own sexuality. Again, the LGBT+ community is full of stories, most notably the Reddit thread about the man who realised he wasn’t homophobic; just jealous. Eddie’s immediate acceptable of Hen and Michael does not necessarily equate to immediate acceptable of his own sexuality.
When people consistently write Eddie as the one to have a sexuality reckoning, it’s not out of hate for the character or out of the desire to whump/baby Buck. It’s just in line with the character. Similarly, if the show does decide to go ahead with Buddie or to reveal Eddie as not heterosexual, please don’t lash out or criticize if they depict him struggling with it or taking a long time to adjust/accept it. Similar to healing, the journey of sexuality exploration is not always linear. Michael’s character is an excellent example of this, paralleled by Charles from Why Women Kill.

I wish more people talked about Bobby and Eddie’s relationship! I adore their dynamic, especially their shared understanding of having gone through similar losses. I know Buck/Bobby tend to get more attention but do we not think it’s significant that on at least two separate occasions, Eddie had gone to Bobby FIRST for hugs/comfort with entire team present? I love how Bobby connects with his entire team but I feel like Bobby/Eddie are underrated. Would love to see them team up more
So... while I agree that their dynamic is underrated, I'm also not super invested in it (helping with the whole underrated thing... #oops)
But yeah, I do think it needs talked about more because what we get of it is genuinely SO sweet.
I genuinely LOVE it that when Shannon died Eddie was just... in a state of shock. It wasn't until Bobby showed up that reality kind of came crashing back, and and he realized how MUCH he needed comfort right in that moment. I think of the entire team Hen is probably the second most "comforting" character, and while she and Eddie don't seem particularly close, it is telling that he doesn't break down and need that comfort from anybody but Bobby.
Hen, Buck, Chim... they were all with him the entire time. They would have been more than willing to offer him any sort of comfort he asked for, but he needed it from Bobby.
And I love the follow up to that in season 4 where Bobby is the one who tells him that "one day you'll wake up in the morning, and that loss isn't the first thing you think about." Everybody else was telling Eddie to move on, whether it be with Ana or anybody else, and he didn't care. He just couldn't move past Shannon.
But when Bobby is the one who suggests it, when he tells him that it's okay to let go of Shannon, when he tells him that loving somebody new doesn't change how much he loved Shannon, or won't make him stop missing her... only then does Eddie finally start moving on.
I honestly love that Bobby's dynamic with each member of the team is specific to who they are and what they need.
His relationships with Chimney and Hen is very big-brother-esque, because the two of them are (for lack of a better term) more mature than the other members of the team. They need camaraderie more than they need guidance, and that's what they give them. I think season 1 Chim was definitely a Little Brother type thing because s1 Chim was... A Mess(tm), but Bobby was also A Mess in season 1 (albeit in a very different way) and the two of them really helped the other grow.
And then Buck and Eddie - particularly Buck - are people who are more in need of guidance, and that's what he provides for them.
He understands all of them well enough and cares about them all so much that he is what THEY need him to be for them, and I love that about him.

I was thinking about when buck called maddy after the tsunami and she was like buck you have to tell Eddie and he just like ..hid. I just am so curious what he was planning on doing like hiding from him?? Going back to his apartment? If Eddie has found Chris before buck confronted him would buck have just left without getting medical? And Chris was like buck saved me and they’re like where did he go and they have to go find him? I wanna know....
uh anon, you inspired me
the worth of things [AO3 LINK] eddie/buck, post-tsunami
Buck hangs up on Maddie.
It makes him feel like a dick, but he can’t handle the thought of talking about it anymore. He’s trying so hard to find Christopher. His arm stings, his body is screaming at him to stop, and his heart hasn’t stopped hammering in his chest.
“Thanks, man,” he says, giving the phone back to its owner.
The guy nods, looks at Buck’s arm. “You should get that seen to.”
“Yeah,” Buck waves a hand and promises he will, which seems to do the trick. Instead, Buck knows Eddie is here somewhere, knows he’s gonna find out Buck lost his kid, and everything’s gonna end. Buck’s gonna lose his best friend, his family, everything. He doesn’t have firefighting; what’s he supposed to do now?
Sitting on the edge of a cot he thinks about going home. It’s probably the best option, but Christopher’s still out there and Buck’s not going to leave him to suffer alone. He’s not. His arm will be fine, he just needs to keep going.
Eddie walks through the VA hospital, double-takes because he thinks he sees Buck. On closer inspection it’s not, and he forces himself to calm down. Chris is safe at home. Part of him wants to call and find out, but he’s pulled in a different direction, a nurse looking for help.
It’s the first time Eddie’s skills have been tested under pressure on such a scale since Afghanistan and his body is not going to thank him for it the next morning. He’s barely seen other members of his team and he’s just considering taking five when he spots someone jumping out of a truck, a familiar figure in her arms.
“Chris?”
“Dad!”
Fuck, what the fuck. Eddie’s there in a second, taking his son from the woman’s arms. It’s on the tip of his tongue to ask what the fuck is going on, when she smiles.
“Are you Buck?”
Eddie frowns. “No, I’m his father, Eddie.”
The woman nods. “He was looking for Buck.”
It takes Eddie a moment to realize what she’s saying. “Buck’s not with him?”
“No,” she says. “He was on the truck, but he-”
“I lost him, Dad,” Christopher says against his neck, and Eddie cradles the back of his head, wants to take Chris and hide. What the fuck was he doing in the middle of the tsunami? Where’s Buck? “I fell and I couldn’t find him.”
Eddie closes his eyes, forces himself to calm down. “How long?”
There’s a flurry of activity behind him and he looks up to see Bobby, Hen, and Chim coming towards him. Eddie doesn’t know what to say, feels himself shaking, and tries to take deep breaths.
“Is Buck here?” Bobby crouches down.
“I lost him,” Christopher says.
He lost you, Eddie thinks but doesn’t say. It’s not fair. Buck’s not at fault for a tsunami.
A hand on his cheek brings him back to the moment, and Eddie looks at his son. “We need to find Buck. He saved me.”
Eddie frowns. “Chris, we need to get you home-”
“No,” Chris says immediately, clinging to Eddie’s shoulders. “Buck’s looking for me, Dad, he wouldn’t just-”
Of fucking course. Eddie hates himself for not thinking about it. Buck loves his son and Eddie trusts him more than anybody else on the planet with Chris’ safety. The list is extremely short. If Chris is here and Buck isn’t, that means Buck is out there somewhere, trying to find Chris.
“Cap.”
“Take Chris home,” Cap says.
“No,” Chris says, bottom lip wobbling. He looks Eddie in the eye. “I can’t go because Buck wouldn’t go.”
Eddie wants to take his son home. He wants to close the door on the world and never leave. Instead, Hen rests a hand on his shoulder. Eddie doesn’t know what she’s trying to say, but he nods.
“Chris could stay with me,” she says carefully. “We can stay in the ambulance and help people until you find Buck.”
No.
“I promise he’ll be safe,” Hen says. “I can call Karen and she can come and get him.”
“No,” Eddie says, kissing Chris’ forehead. “I trust you. Chris, we can stay here together.”
“But Dad,” Chris says. “You’re my hero so you have to go and be Buck’s.”
Kid logic. It’s kid logic, but it’s working. Eddie doesn’t know what he’d do if he lost Chris. He knows how close he came, knows what Chris being here means, but he also knows his best friend is out there somewhere, devastated. “Alright.”
“Eddie, you know what this means.”
Eddie ignores Bobby for the moment and holds Chris’ face in his hands. “You stay with Hen, you hear me? You don’t go anywhere unless she tells you to.”
Chris nods and hugs Eddie again. “I love you, Dad.”
“I love you too, Chris,” Eddie says, burying his face in Chris’ hair. It takes everything he’s got to hand Chris over to Hen, the father in him screaming. When he’s sure Chris is safely inside the ambulance, he stands, finding the nerves he relied on in Afghanistan. Something flickers across Bobby’s face.
“You know this isn’t gonna be easy.”
“I don’t care,” Eddie says. “Buck’s there somewhere on blood thinners. I would much rather be with my son right now, but my best friend’s out there, Cap.”
Bobby shares a look with Chim. “There’s nobody to spare.”
“I’ve got a radio,” Eddie says. “He can’t be far, not with how many people are flooding in here. Besides, if you see him, you can radio me.”
“I don’t like this,” Chim says.
Eddie snaps, “you don’t have to,” and claps Bobby on the arm. Bobby, thankfully, doesn’t try and get him to stop.
The roads are a mess.
Everything is a mess.
Eddie’s never seen the devastation a tsunami can cause up close and he’s not sure he wants to again. Chris was in this. His son. Buck’s still out there.
There’s a crackle from his radio and Eddie sucks in a breath. “Bobby?”
“It’s me, Dad,” Chris says, as if it should be obvious. “Mr. Bobby said I could call you.”
“That’s good,” Eddie says. His first instinct is to be angry; he can’t concentrate if he knows Chris is waiting, but he cuts those thoughts off. Chris is waiting for him because he’s gotta find Buck. Buck, who’s lost out there somewhere.
Dead, his brain supplies, but no, Eddie’s not gonna think that.
“Have you found Buck yet?”
Eddie takes a moment to close his eyes. “No. I’m still looking.”
“You should find the fire truck,” Chris says, and Eddie drags his eyes over debris, overturned cars, and dead bodies. Fuck. “We played I Spy on top and Buck told me I was like Dory.”
One foot in front of the other, Diaz. He’s here somewhere. More bodies. A couple at the end of the street and Eddie picks up his pace, jogs over. “One moment, Chris. Hey, my name’s Eddie. You guys alright?”
They’re both women; one looks exhuasted, the other has a gash on her leg. “We’re looking for aid.”
“Back that way,” Eddie says, gesturing towards the VA hospital. “There’s a hospital set up and they’ll be able to help, alright?”
“Thank you,” the exhusated woman says. “Aren’t you going back that way?”
Eddie shakes his head. “No, I’m looking for someone.”
Giving them a description of Buck is hard, but Chris chimes in with what Chris was wearing. The exhuasted woman shakes her head, but the other perks up a little.
“Christopher.”
“That’s me!” Chris says through the radio.
Eddie’s breath catches when the woman shakes her head. “No, he said he was looking for Christopher.”
“Do you know where he was?” Eddie asks, hope flooding him. If she met Buck, that means he’s still alive.
Directions spotty at best, Eddie waits only long enough to make sure they know where they’re going and starts off at a jog.
Eddie almost misses him.
The road is deserted and Eddie’s beginning to think maybe Cap was right; there’s no way he’s going to be able to find Buck. He doesn’t want to fail, doesn’t want Buck to be left out in all of this devastation. Eddie can go home with Chris; Hen, Chim, Bobby. They’ve all got people to go home to, people they love who are safe. Buck’s got Maddie, but he’s alone right now. Alone and possibly injured and thinking about Chris.
Eddie’s not an idiot; he knows how much Buck cares for Chris. He’s a regular in their household, and Chris adores Buck. He’s always asking to FaceTime, to draw pictures for Buck, talking endlessly about the times they do hang out. Eddie doesn’t know what to do with it, hasn’t been able to think of anything except helping Chris through Shannon’s death.
Buck, though. He’s—something, and Eddie can’t imagine not having him right there.
Which, fuck, he thinks, rounding the corner and spotting a slumped figure. He knows who it is. He knows Buck better than anyone else, and when he’s got time he’ll think about that, but he skids to a stop in front of Buck.
Buck looks awful; he’s dirty from head to foot. His arm is bloody, a crude and muddy bandage around his forearm. There are scratches on his face, and tired lines all over his face. Eddie’s heart aches and he crouches down, tries to get Buck to sit up.
“Chris,” Buck says, breaking Eddie’s heart.=
“Buck,” Eddie says, cradling Buck close.
Buck tries to turn his face away, but Eddie’s gentle as he traces his thumbs over Buck’s cheeks. Eventually, Buck meets his eyes. He looks devastated, exhausted, and scared in equal measure. “i lost him.”
“Oh no, sweetheart,” Eddie says, pressing his lips to Buck’s temple. “He’s safe. I’ve seen him.”
“I,” Buck starts. Hope, now, and a little disbelief. Before he can say anything else, his face falls and he’s crying. Sobs shake his frame and Eddie pulls him close, worried about the state of Buck’s arm, the way he’s trembling and the weakness in his grip.
“I’ve got you,” Eddie says. He shifts them, tries to help Buck stand.
Buck breathes wetly into the curve of Eddie’s jaw. “M’so tired but I gotta find Chris. He’s so little, and Eddie’s gonna be mad if I come home without him.”
“I’m not mad,” Eddie says. “I’m right here and I’m not mad.”
There’s no reply, and Buck sags against him. Eddie’s gotta get back to the hospital. He moves them over to a pile of debris, where’s there’s something to prop Buck against. He kneels next to him, lets Buck rest his head against Eddie’s shoulder and holds the back of his head.
“Cap?”
“Dad?”
Buck twitches at the sound of Christopher’s voice.
“Can you get Hen or Bobby for me, Chris?”
“I’m here,” Hen says immediately. “Did you find him?”
“Yeah,” Eddie breathes and can’t help but smile at Chris’ cheer. “We might need a pickup. I don’t like how he looks,” Eddie pitches his voice lower. “Not sure if he’s got a head injury, but he doesn’t recognize me.”
“Shit,” Hen mutters. “Alright, where are you?”
Eddie lists off a rough area of the streets and cuts of contact, but not before assuring Chris they’re bringing Buck home. “Buck?”
Buck still breathing, still clutching weakly at Eddie’s work shirt. “I can’t see Eddie,” Buck says, finally lifting his head. “He’ll never speak to me again.”
If Eddie’s heart wasn’t already broken, he thinks the pieces would shatte beyond repair at the fear on Buck’s face. “I know you don’t believe me, but I promise, I’m right here and I’m not mad. Eddie won’t be mad. I’m not mad.”
It seems easier to wait it out; he holds Buck close and waits for rescue.
Buck feels like the world’s crushed him beneath its weight.
Body tired, emotionally wrung out, and fear over his future cloud him as he comes awake on a cot. He automatically panics. He’s not supposed to be here, he’s supposed to be looking for Chris!
“Easy,” someone says, pressing down on his shoulder.
Eddie. No, he’s can’t be here because that means—
Buck lets out a sob. “I’m so sorry.”
“Oh, Buck, no,” Eddie says, and his voice is soothing. Is Buck gonna lose that once Eddie knows? Is he gonna have to move away and maybe find something else— Eddie’s hands are on his face, forcing Buck to look him in the eye. Buck tries not to, but it’s better to get it over with. Maybe it’ll hurt less. (It won’t.) “I promise he’s safe.”
“Eddie,” Buck says, voice wobbling.
“I wouldn’t lie about this,” Eddie says, moving Buck’s face. There’s another cot next to Buck’s, and Christopher is fast asleep, buried under blankets.
“You found him?” Buck sits up too fast, feeling nauseous and dizzy, but he scrambles to reach for Chris. Eddie lets him, rocks back on his heels and Buck’s hands hover over Chris. “Can I?”
Eddie looks devastated. “Of course, Buck. Of course.”
Buck thinks he’s crying as he runs a hand through Chris’ hair. Chris comes awake quickly, blinking up at Buck. Buck waits, afraid Chris will hate him, but there’s a huge smile on Chris’ face and he sits up, wrapping his arms around Buck’s neck.
“I knew you’d find me,” Chris says, and Buck can only bury his face in Chris’ hair, tell himself that Chris is safe over and over. “You saved me.”
I lost you, Buck thinks, but doesn’t say. He jumps when someone touches his shoulder, but it’s Eddie. Eddie kisses Buck’s temple and Buck wishes he wouldn’t. He doesn’t deserve it, doesn’t deserve the love Chris is throwing at him.
Chris falls back asleep quickly, still cradled in Eddie’s arms.
“What are you thinking?”
“I lost him,” Buck says, voice shaky. “I don’t—I don’t think I should look after him anymore.”
Eddie doesn’t say anything for a long moment, and when Buck meets his eyes, Eddie strokes a hand over his face, fingers warm on the back of Buck’s neck as he cradles him like he’s something precious. Buck doesn’t feel precious. He feels hollowed out, empty, afraid of losing everything. “It’s been a tough day.” Buck makes a noise, but Eddie’s grip tightens a fraction. “I’m tried, Chris is tired, and you’re exhausted. We’re going home—to mine—and I’m gonna put you into bed.”
Buck doesn’t know what to say.
“Then tomorrow, we’re gonna make breakfast and talk about this, Buck,” Eddie says.
“Can we just talk now?” Buck asks. “If you’re taking Chris away—”
“No,” Eddie says forcefully, and he leans in, kisses Buck’s birthmark. “I’m never taking Chris away from you, Buck. Not now, not ever.”
Buck doesn’t dare breathe.
“Are you listening?” Eddie doesn’t continue until Buck nods. “You saved my son. I know that, Chris knows that. One day, I hope you’ll know that. Right now, I want to make sure you’re safe, okay? You and Chris. Talking tomorrow—I just wanna know you’re okay, Buck.”
“I’m not,” Buck whispers, after a long pause. He feels his eyes sting with tears, and Eddie’s there, holding Buck gently and Buck almost can’t stand it. “I haven’t been okay for—I don’t want to do this now, I’m so tired.”
“I know, I’m sorry,” Eddie says gently. “We’re just waiting for a ride, and then I promise we’re going home.”
“Home,” Buck says, trying the word. It’s not, he knows that; Eddie’s house is not his.
But then Eddie’s pulling back, wiping away Buck’s tears with gentle touches. “Home. For as long as you need it to be.”
“Don’t promise—”
“Buck,” Eddie says again. “We’ll talk tomorrow.”
It feels like it should be more, but Buck’s too exhausted. He lets Eddie pull him back in, hold him and Chris both while they wait to go home. It’s a simple word, but it holds so much more. Eddie’s never lied to Buck; if he says it’s gonna be his home too, maybe Buck can believe it. For now, he’s got Chris, Eddie, and he’s safe. Not okay, not whole, but safe.

I really adore this blog as a fan of color it’s so refreshing to see a major blog in the fandom acknowledging the racist tendencies of the b*ddie fandom as a whole and even those that prioritize buck vs the rest. I love seeing gifs of the characters and relationships I fell for here (chimney and maddie, hen and Karen , Athena and Bobby, now even michael and David!). I don’t interact with most of the fandom and I’m just glad there’s one blog that’s really felt like a positive space to simply appreciate the characters - do you have any blogs recs for 911 that center one of the characters or color or any blogs that are not mainly b*ddie/buck?
🥺🥺🥺🥺 This is very sweet, thank you!!!! 🥺
And I totally get what you mean about staying away from the fandom. I only follow 2 blogs that post a lot about the show, @maddieandchimney and @buckleys-diaz. They post about more than just Buddie and I enjoy both blogs immensely.
Unfortunately, there are no active blogs (that I’m aware of) that focus on any of the characters of color. I made a blog rec list at the start of the season and marked the ones that post about more than just Buddie with ***.
Some other blogs I’d include are:
@juliesdahlia, @bucksbvckley, @heartbee4, @strandtk

did you see tim minear's tweets about b/ddie fans being hostile to him and that it's driving him off interacting with fans? it's awful to see, I'm new to the fandom and already getting sick of how twitter 'fans' are treating the actors and writers
first of all-welcome to the fandom! there’s a lot of lovely people and its very welcoming, especially on tumblr. also feel free to come chat or send messages anytime :)
I hadn’t but I looked it up after seeing your message. this doesnt just go for 911, but for all shows- I feel like shipping on twitter especially has gotten worse and worse over the years when it comes to directly mentioning actors, writers and creators of a show. also, whether the ship is canon or not, nothing is EVER enough. they always find a reason to complain about something. the worse thing about it is thats its a pretty small portion of the fandom (or any fandom), but since they’re the most vocal, and because they tweet directly at the people mentioned above, it gets more attention than it should.
dont get me wrong, if there is something genuinely wrong with a show and people are angry at something legitimate (like when its a storyline based on something that happened or could happen in real life that was handled poorly and people are calling it out- the recent threesome on roswell new mexico for example, is the first thing that popped into my mind) then thats a totally different thing. not because of something like “buck and eddie didnt have more scenes together in this episode HOW DARE YOU” or tweeting hate at an actress for her character being “in the way” of buddie or automatically hating a female character for the same reason.
representation is so so so important and some people act like without buddie, 911 has none, which is absolutely untrue and is kind of infuriating, tbh. also its representation comes in many forms- hen and karen, a lesbian married couple are literally right there. chimney/maddie and bobby/athena are interracial couples. michael is gay. so is josh. chris has CP. eddie is half mexican (and also a single father). buck’s leg was basically held up by screws and rods and being on blood thinners and unable to work was a huge part of the first half of season 3. almost everyone has had some form of PTSD.
anyway this has gotten too long but it really sucks when a small portion of “fans” ruin things for everything else. im good here on tumblr where i can thirst over eddie diaz and evan buckley and their real life counterparts without ever having to worry about them seeing it (because I would never want them to lol)

Old Enough to Know I'll End Up Dying (Not Young Enough to Forget Again)
A story inspired by a prompt from @bemybuddie who wanted Eddie getting hurt in the street fighting and being unconscious and then dreaming of a perfect life with Buck, and when he wakes up he tries to get to that place from the dream, because it was wonderful. Be warned, it’s gonna be long. Part 1 of 4.
For the first few moments it’s total euphoria, and he can see why people do this for a living. The sweat, the pull of muscles, the constant need to be on alert; it was exhilarating. And then something solid collided with his left temple and his world went black.
He came back to awareness with a bright light shining in his eyes and at least a dozen worried looking people standing over him, the closest aside from the man checking him over, was Lena. It took a moment for him to realize their lips were moving, and a moment longer after that to actual hear what they were saying.
“-ddie, you good?”
“Ugh, what hit me?”
“That would be my fist.” The man he’d been fighting at least looked apologetic, knowing it had been Eddie’s first fight and having promised to take it easy on him.
“Well, ow.” Eddie chuckled, moving to push himself off the ground.
“Woah now, you were just knocked out,” Lena rolled her eyes, pushing against Eddie’s chest lightly, “can you just sit for a second and let our doctor look you over?”
“What’s the verdict doc, am I gonna live?”
The doctor rolled his eyes but seemed pleased as he put his penlight away. “Looks like just a mild concussion. Get some rest tonight, take something for the headache and maybe put some ice on that.”
Eddie turned to Lena and smiled in a way that clearly asked, ‘happy?’
She huffed out a laugh, shaking her head, but extended a hand and helped haul Eddie off the ground. “Let’s call it a night huh?”
“So how bad was that for my first fight?”
“Honestly, you’d be surprised how many people get knocked out their first time. Plus, you lasted longer than most, so you got that going for you.”
Eddie laughed, “I suppose we should call it a night.”
“You good to drive home?”
There was something else there, beneath the surface, and Eddie could tell it wasn’t just a question as to his safety. It was more of an invitation, to do something else with the rest of their evening. And he was tempted, god he was tempted, but he had to get back home, where Christopher was waiting with Buck.
Thinking of his friend made his stomach do all sorts of weird and uncomfortable flips, but he brushed it off as best he could. “I’m good to go, I’ve gotta get home to my kid.”
Lena nodded, not at all offended. “Another time. Have a good night Diaz.”
“You too la bombera.” He smiled as he climbed into his car, his head was still pounding but everything else? Everything else felt amazing.
There were still lights on when Eddie pulled into his driveway, careful to leave enough room for Buck to back out. He climbed the steps quickly, keys jingling as he unlocked the door. He could hear voices coming from further inside, and he followed them to Christopher’s room, the sight making his heart warm.
Chris was laying under his covers, smiling and giggling as Buck knelt on the ground in front of him, acting out some sort of story involving a stuffed t-rex, a G.I Joe, the blue power ranger, and the lego Spiderman hanging suspended from a lego tower.
“Oh no!” Buck shouted softly, making an exaggerated chomping noise as the t-rex swooped down and apparently ate the G.I Joe.
“That’s not what happens!” Christopher cried, smiling.
“It isn’t?”
“No!”
“Well then what does happen?”
Christopher paused for a moment, grabbing something under the sheets, “He gets saved by Wolverine!”
Buck looked around in confusion, scratching at his head, “I don’t see Wolverine.”
“He’s right here!” Christopher shouted, pulling his Wolverine action figure out from under his blanket.
“Woah!” Buck cried, “And it’s a sneak attack from Wolverine, oh no what is the t-rex gonna do!”
Christopher double over laughing and if Eddie’s heart hadn’t already been full it certainly was then. “Now what’s going on in here?” He asked in a playfully stern tone.
“Daddy!” Christopher looked up and his smile grew impossibly larger.
“Hey buddy!” Eddie ran into the room and bent down, pulling Chris into a tight hug, “How was your day?”
Christopher’s head fell back, and he thought for a moment, “Good, Buck and I saved the world!”
“Oh, did you now?”
Buck chuckled, standing and sticking his hands in his pocket as he watched the two of them interact. “More like the backyard.”
“It was being attacked by pirates.”
Eddie pulled back, holding Chris at arms’ length, “I thought you liked pirates.”
“I do, the good ones!” He laughed.
“Oh of course, what was I thinking? Alright, time for bed huh?”
Chris sighed, looking down at where their story had been abruptly paused. “Okay. Buck? Can we finish the story tomorrow?”
“Absolutely buddy!” Buck said, not even having to ask Eddie if it would be okay, already knowing the man worked again the next day.
Chris pulled away from his dad and held out his arms expectantly, waiting for Buck to hug him goodnight as per usual. Buck, never one to disappoint, bent down and wrapped his arms gently around Christopher’s small frame. “Goodnight buddy.”
“Goodnight kid.” Chris whispered, stifling a yawn.
“Night Chris, I love you.” Eddie bent over, kissing his sons’ forehead before following Buck towards the door.
“Love you daddy.”
Pausing at the door Eddie smiled as he looked at the bed, waiting for Christopher to situate himself comfortably before flipping the light off and pulling the door mostly closed behind him.
Buck turned to him, smile on his face and something funny to say no doubt when his entire demeanor changed, “Woah Eddie, what happened are you okay?”
Eddie stopped in confusion before recognition dawned, he was probably bruised from the fight. He hadn’t even had a chance to look at it, he really hoped it wasn’t too bad. “Oh yeah, fine just um, little mishap at work.”
“Okay.” Buck was staring at him, watching him closely, almost like he didn’t believe Eddie but didn’t want to call him out either. “Well, I can be over again tomorrow, around noon, right?”
Eddie blinked in surprise, butterflies fluttering in his stomach at the fact that Buck knew his schedule. He shoved them down quickly however and nodded instead. Except that motion made the world spin a little, so he quickly stopped. “Yeah, noon is great.”
Buck was staring at him again, worry clearly shining in his eyes. “You sure you’re okay?”
“Positive, wouldn’t be home if I weren’t. Now you should get some sleep, I assume you’ll have your hands full again tomorrow.”
“Yeah that kid is never short on energy.”
“I know it’s obscene.” Eddie responded immediately, and the two of them laughed, the sound tapering off awkwardly. And Eddie had to wonder when there started to be tension between them; or maybe he was the only one feeling it.
Buck sniffed, smiling softly and looking up at Eddie through his eyelashes.
The sight was so beautiful Eddie’s heart almost leapt right out of his chest; and wouldn’t that have been embarrassing. He must have gotten hit harder than he realized, normally he was able to control those types of thoughts, knowing nothing would ever- could ever- come of it. He cleared his throat, “Well, it’s been a long day I should,” he gestured vaguely over his shoulder.
“Right.” Buck nodded, “Have a good night Eddie.”
“Yeah you too.” Eddie practically whispered, watching and, definitely not admiring the view, as Buck let himself out. Once the coast was clear he let himself collapse against the counter with a sigh, head hanging, and eyes closed.
“You should just tell him already.”
The sudden voice nearly gave Eddie a heart attack and he turned around to see Christopher standing in the doorway of the kitchen. “What are you doing out of bed?” He demanded good-naturedly.
Chris shrugged innocently, “I was thirsty.”
“Course you were, get some water and then get your butt in bed you little stinker.”
“I’m going.” Christopher said, smiling up at him in a way that bode of far too much knowledge. “But you should tell him.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“That you like Bu-”
“Bed!” Eddie said loudly, hating how much his ears were burning.
Christopher just giggled, walking off slowly to his room, cup of water balanced in one hand.
Eddie sighed heavily, if he hadn’t needed Tylenol before he certainly did now. He did not need to think about the implications of his son giving him advice on his love life.
Buck groaned as his head flopped to land against his steering wheel. He knew his crush on Eddie was getting out of hand, he just didn’t know what to do. Maddie would say that he should just tell him already, “nothing can happen if you do nothing.”. But it wasn’t like that was even remotely an option. Eddie definitely wasn’t interested, and he really couldn’t do anything to mess up what they already had. Because even if he couldn’t be with Eddie in the way he really wanted, he knew he needed Eddie in his life in some capacity. And confessing unrequited love was a sure-fire way to get him full scale ejected from Eddie’s life.
He waited for the light in the living room to flip off before starting his car and pulling out of the driveway. He was just thankful that when he got home, he was able to fall asleep relatively quickly, even if it was on the couch with his tv providing a wonderful distracting background noise to his otherwise loud thoughts.
The next day started off as normal as they all did, no dark rain clouds or impending sense of doom. Just a quick flash of a smile goodbye and a shout of “love you” out the door before Buck was left alone in the house with Christopher.
“Well bud, what do you feel like doing today?”
Christopher thought on it for a moment, before his face lit up, “Ice cream!”
Buck chuckled with a shake of his head; he was glad he wasn’t the kid’s dad because he couldn’t say no to anything that child wanted. “Ice cream it is.”
Christopher was sitting in front of the tv, enjoying the ice cream they’d gotten to go, while Buck was cleaning up from lunch in the kitchen. His phone started ringing, vibrating from its place on the countertop, and he quickly dried his hands and went to grab it. He glanced up at Chris quickly, smiling when the kid shouted something about going the other way at the tv, before answering. “Hey Bobby, what’s-”
Bobby cut him off quickly, his words making Buck’s heart come to a jarring halt. “Buck listen, Eddie collapsed at work today, he’s in the hospital right now getting looked at but we don’t know what the problem is.”
Buck felt like there wasn’t air to breathe, “What?” he croaked.
“Yeah, I just wanted to let you know and, I don’t know if you want to bring Christopher or-”
“No!” Buck said quickly, nervously checking to make sure Chris’ attention was still drawn to the tv before stepping into the laundry room. “No, I-I don’t, he doesn’t need to be there yet. Um, let’s just, find out what’s wrong first. He’s had so much happen recently, he doesn’t need to get freaked out if it’s nothing.”
“Okay,” Bobby agreed readily, and that made Buck’s heart swell in gratitude. “Are you coming?”
“Uh, I can uh, I can give Carla a call, see if she’s available. I’ll text you when I find out. Just, please keep me updated?”
“Of course.”
“‘Kay thanks, talk to you soon.” Buck sighed heavily, noticing for the first time how badly his hands were shaking. “Oh shit.” He breathed.
Christopher was sitting exactly where Buck had left him, smiling and laughing, not a worry in the world. Buck hated himself for what he was about to do but he couldn’t just not tell Chris his dad was hurt.
“Hey kiddo,” Buck swallowed, he put the tv on mute and steeled himself for what was probably going to be one of the hardest conversations of his life.
Chris picked up on the shift in tone immediately, “What’s wrong Buck?”
“Look um, buddy, your daddy he’s, well he’s a little hurt. And um, our friends had to take him to the hospital.”
“We go see him?” Chris asked immediately.
“Um, I’m going to see if Carla can come over and watch you for a bit, while I go to the hospital.”
“But I wanna see daddy.”
“I know you do. I promise you can see him, just-just not right this second okay?”
Chris paused, his voice small and quivering, “Is daddy going to the same place as mommy?”
Buck’s heart shattered and he had to physically hold back a sob, because the truth was, he didn’t even know. Bobby hadn’t been specific, but he’d sounded rattled. “No, no buddy of course not. Your daddy, well I don’t know if you know this, but your daddy is one strong guy.”
“Like you?” Christopher asked, tone lifting a little.
“Nah, even stronger.” Buck whispered, blinking back tears.
“Who?”
Buck smiled, the action painful, “You.”
Buck was at the hospital a little over thirty minutes later rushing in and finding the team sitting in the waiting room. “Hey, what’s going on any news?”
Bobby was on his feet in a second, hands gently gripping Buck’s shoulders, “Hey buddy, calm down, we don’t have any news yet. Just breathe okay?”
Buck nodded, doing his best to keep his panic at bay. “What happened?”
“He just collapsed, no warning or anything.” Hen supplied, an untouched cup of coffee sitting on the table next to her.
“I mean, did it have to do with how he got hurt yesterday?”
Bobby crossed his arms over his chest, “How did he get hurt yesterday?”
Buck blinked, “What do you mean, he told me he got hurt at work.” Buck swallowed, “He did get hurt at work, right?” He asked, but his teams silence was already answer enough. Eddie had lied.
The realization smacked Buck like a train. He couldn’t think of a reason that Eddie would lie to him, it didn’t make sense.
“It wasn’t that bad.”
The soft murmur had Buck’s attention zeroing in on a woman he hadn’t noticed before, sitting in the corner chair in the same firefighter uniform as the rest of his team.
“What wasn’t that bad?” Bobby asked.
The woman sighed, “He got smacked in the head pretty good last night but-”
“What?” Buck interrupted, “What was he doing?”
“I took him to a small street fighting ring I’m in.”
Buck blinked; certain he’d heard wrong. “You made him do what?”
“Hey, I didn’t make him do anything, he wanted to.” The woman shot back defensively.
“Wh- who even are you, why are you here?”
“Lena Bosko, and I’m here cause I’m worried about my teammate.”
Buck was getting pretty sick of having curveballs thrown at him, and he could only turn to Bobby in hurt confusion at the new knowledge.
Bobby sighed, “It’s only a temporary thing, her team is a little displaced right now cause of the tsunami and you’re not ready to come back to work yet Buck.”
Lena paused, looking him up and down, “So you’re the infamous Buck.”
“What of it?” Buck said sharply, not liking the way she was glowering at him.
She shrugged nonchalantly, “Nothing, just not how I was picturing the guy who lost Eddie’s kid in the tsunami to look.”
Buck saw red, “What did you just say?” He snarled.
“Woah, okay how about we calm down.” Chim said, stepping in front of Buck as he took a threatening step forward.
“Bosko, that is enough, I want you to go cool off.”
“But Cap-”
“I will text you with an update when we have one for now take a walk.” Bobby’s voice left no room for question.
Lena scoffed, glaring daggers at Buck as she stalked out of the room, the eyes of the remaining 118 following her as she went.
Only once she was out of sight around the corner did Chimney release Buck’s shoulder from his hold. “Sorry Buckaroo.” He whispered.
Buck wasn’t quite sure what he was apologizing for, but he appreciated it all the same.
“Hey Buck, I’m gonna talk to her okay? She doesn’t get to speak to you that way.”
Buck nodded, “It’s okay Bobby.” He followed Chim’s guiding hands into a chair and leaned into Hen’s offered arm.
She rubbed her hand across his back, “He’s gonna be okay Buck.”
Buck smiled up at her weakly; he really wanted to believe her, but he just couldn’t shake the fact that she didn’t actually know.
It was another hour at least before the doctor came out, he told the team all sorts of information that Buck simply wasn’t able to process, he knew they’d tell him the important bits later. All he really got was that Eddie was alive but unconscious, and they would be able to see him.
The room wasn’t anything special, once you’d been in enough hospital rooms, they all looked the same. But Buck hadn’t been quite prepared for how quiet it would be. Aside from the machines, and there were too many of them doing things he didn’t even know and that on its own was enough to terrify him, Eddie was silent. And so still. Buck had to wonder if this was what it had been like for the others when he’d been in the hospital.
Hen gripped his right hand in her own, Chim slipping his fingers through his other, and Bobby placed a warm hand against his shoulder. The flood of support was overwhelming, and he found himself biting back tears.
He stared at Eddie for a moment longer, taking it all in: the closed eyes, bandage around his head, chest rising and falling steadily with the beeping of machines. “You’re an idiot.” He whispered, as the first tear of what would probably be many slipped down his face.

Like seriously
Shannon says from the VERY first episode she was in that part of why she left is because she blamed HERSELF for Christopher’s condition.
That is a hellova burden to carry, along with being left to raise him without her husband and instead with his (frankly) super overbearing family who seemingly criticized the way he was raised pretty much the entire time.
And yet people can still bring themselves to hate her??? HOW???
