Session 6, May 14 2022
Slightly late start tonight as Baby Wee Jock is playing silly buggers and giving his parents hell. Still no Giles, but we will muddle through without him. Oh shit we’re in the middle of a fight!
Hazel is next in the order. She can’t see the ooze, but we are pointing and screaming obscenities at it. She moves to see it, hides, and shoots. Nuri tries the fire again, even knowing that it won’t do much, because that’s really all he has. Pfenig touches himself and regains some hit points while we all cough uncomfortably and look away. The pseudopod throws out an arm but misses him. Vervain hits it with their cantrip and explodes it in holy light. Woohoo!
What were we doing down here? Oh yeah, looking for a rogue wizard from Blackstaff. Should we be on the lookout for dancing broomsticks? We take a short rest - Hazel hears a creaking noise, like the creaking of old bones. Slow, swaying. No footsteps, no movement. If we have someone stand guard we should be safe. Vervain offers, as they don’t need to rest.
We move on, and Pfenig spots some skeletons...
None of them are moving; they turn to watch him, but make no move toward him. Hazel wants to have a look for traps. She doesn’t see a trigger as such, but there is a line of dust that lies across the pathway going past the skeletons. Could Nuri make an arcana guess as to what the dust might do? He can… Powders are often used to mark out magical lines or barriers. It might set off a trigger - it’s like an arcane tripwire.
Pfenig sees five skeletons. Nuri has an idea. He makes a mobile image of Giles, and suggests walking it over the line to see what happens. We agree. Why not? One of the skeletons turns its head to watch the illusion, but nothing else happens. Should we try to blow the line of dust away? Magi-vac it up? Or perhaps disturbing it will trigger it; should we hop over?
Vervain Investigates one to see if it’s an illusion; it doesn’t seem to be. We decide to all attack at once. We all go threetwoone and attack -
Hazel obliterates one, Nuri and Pfenig and Vervain all do some damage. We roll initiative…
We clobber some, they hit us back. As part of their turn, Vervain steps over the line. An alarm sounds further down the corridor… They use the rest of their movement to get as far as they can, but can’t see anything yet.
The last skeleton shoots Vervain and then retreats away down the corridor in the direction we’re going. Nuri dashes after it. Vervain clobbers it as it tries to run away.
We move on; Nuri casts Protection from Evil and Good on Vervain. They move ahead a little too far and find a human who has been waiting for the party since Vervain crossed the dust line; he casts Burning Hands on them. He does 13 damage, which is exactly enough to take Vervain to 0HP. The rest roll initiative…
Pfenig brings Vervain back and then stands next to the baddie so that he can clobber him if he moves. The baddie takes a Healing Potion - Pfenig tries to slap it out of his hands. He casts Burning Hands on Pfenig, but luckily it’s not enough to take him out.
Nuri, approaching: “… Fire, is it?”
He misses, sadly. He tries to make it look like it was on purpose. A warning shot, if you will. An imp familiar appears and takes Pfenig out. The wizard casts something cold on Vervain, who then has Disadvantage on their next weapon attack. They Spare the Dying on Pfenig.
The imp tries an attack on Vervain - but Nuri’s casting of Protection from Evil and Good forces Disadvantage on the roll, and it misses!
Hazel sneaks up on the imp and stabs it with her rapier. “Skewer him! Make him pay!” It puffs out of existence, and the wizard whimpers.
The wizard is up; Nuri gives him the finger. Pfenig starts to snore. The wizard stands on Pfenig so he can get both Vervain and Nuri with Burning Hands again. Vervain goes down. Nuri casts Hellish Rebuke. How dare he try and beat Nuri at his own nonsense? How de do dis!
Hazel immediately wants to see what gubbins he’s got. After she’s fed both Pfenig and Vervain healing potions, of course.
His horrible little hovel smells awful. There is a smelly bed and an imp nest. Nuri and Vervain investigate the body, and find a small platinum coin worth 7gp, 5 sp, and 15 gp printed in the likeness of a pious martyr. We put it toward the party fund.
Pfenig investigates the smelly bed - he finds a scroll of Identify. Hazel finds a chest - and finds out that it’s trapped the hard way. “Fingers caught in cookie jar.” She takes a poisoned dart to the shoulder and takes 6 poison damage. She finds a torrid romance novel, and a healing potion. We decide to give the novel to Giles when he returns.
Nuri finds some wine, while Pfenig and Vervain take a short rest. Nuri finds some notes on something that was burned in a bowl - it was a brooch, given to Eneus when he joined Blackstaff. He was trying to find ways to destroy it, paranoid that the organisation was using it to track him. He thinks we can bring this back as evidence for Vajra.
We head back up out of the sewer and on up to Blackstaff Tower to report back to Vajra. Nuri gives her the burned brooch. She smiles, warmly. Looking around at the burned and damaged party, she gives us each a healing potion. Pfenig chugs his. She also gives us 20gp.
Oh yeah, we were going to go out on the lash with the blacksmiths and the carpenter! Well now we’ve got 20gp burning holes in our pockets, so we head back to Trollskull Alley, and give Giles his smutty book.
We are intending to meet up with our new friends - but as we walk along Trollskull Alley, we pass a shop called Bookworm’s Treasure.
Tumblr media
Standing outside is a familiar face - Fala. They look furious, and are waving a placard. They tell us not to go in the shop or give them any business. The script on their placard is very flowery, but Nuri manages to read it.
“Duskwood Paper Equals Murder!”
The proprietors use duskwood for their scrolls, and it’s endangered. These trees must be protected, Fala says. Vervain feels a tug on their arm - there is a small golden dragonborn standing there. This is Rishaal, the Page-Turner, the owner of the Bookworm’s Treasure.
"Please don’t let this charade distract you - come inside!" Vervain refuses, siding immediately with Fala. The party, minus Vervain, go inside with Rishaal. (Vervain asks Fala for another placard; they are overjoyed and produce another for Vervain to wave.)
Rishaal says that the only high enough quality paper they can get is Duskwood. Nuri suggests planting seeds for every one that is cut down? It takes too long for Duskwood to grow for that to make a difference, Rishaal says. He offers us all a book or scroll at half price if we stop Fala’s protests. Nuri and Pfenig know there are some alternatives for making scrolls and spellbooks; wizards are likely the best source for these types of paper. Or, Yagra might know a ‘less legal wizard'.
Plus, Yagra’s in the pub, so we can do both at once! We swing by and pick up Avi, Embric and Tally on the way to the Portal. Vervain explains all this to Fala, who agrees and will also come to the pub with us.
We make Charisma (or in some cases, Charisn’tma) checks. Then Wisdom, then Constitution.
Nuri spends 4sp on his night out. He’s had a great time, but made no new connections. He is hung over, but no adverse effects. Vervain spent 6sp, formed a friendship with Fala who now owes them a favour. They are fresh as a daisy the next day.
Hazel spends 5sp, makes a new friendship with Tally, and is queasy when she wakes up but it passes. Pfenig spent no money! He is absolutely hanging the next day, at Disadvantage for ability checks. He has no new friends, but hasn’t offended anyone either.
Collectively, we are making inroads with the merchants who are getting on better with each other. The misunderstanding between the blacksmiths and the carpenter now seems to be water under the bridge. Tally is very excited about the singles night at the temple.
At breakfast, Yagra slips a piece of paper across the table to Hazel. It says “Weirdbottles Concoctions, Trade Ward” and has an address. She says to ask for the owner, who might be able to help us with the paper issue.
We head to the Trades Ward and find the magic shop…
Tumblr media
The proprietor, Skeemo Weirdbottle, is a gnome.
Tumblr media
We figure he must be at least slightly criminally inclined, since he deals with the Zhentarim. We go in, pushing Nuri (technically the most charismatic) to the front. Skeemo watches us as we go in. Nuri potters over to the counter and introduces himself, and asks about the paper.
Skeemo thinks there must be more to this. We come to a potion shop, for paper? Nuri explains we were given his name by a contact of ours in the Portal. Ah, Miss Stonefist. Is the paper for ourselves? No, it’s for a merchant. Dragonborn. Gold.
Nuri makes a Persuasion check. 22! Skeemo says he doesn’t sell paper as such, but he can source Shadowtop (?) paper, which ought to suffice. It is sourced from the Underdark, and is used by drow and rock gnomes. It’s much more renewable than Duskwood. We are to tell the proprietor of the Bookworm’s Treasure that Skeemo will set him up with a contact for this paper in exchange for a discount on some of his scrolls.
Vervain wants to make sure that Fala will approve of this Shadowtop paper; they might know something else about the stuff that Skeemo hasn’t told us. Skeemo gives us the contact details, on a piece of Shadowtop paper.
Nuri asks what Skeemo sells; alchemical stuff and recipes. Nuri’s hair flames noticeably higher when he says this.
We return to Fala, who tells us that Shadowtop paper will be an acceptable substitute as far as they’re concerned. We go back to Bookworm’s Treasure and tell Rishaal about the deal. He is dubious about Skeemo, who he thinks has connections with the Zhentarim.
What??? No, not that guy, he’s above board. We swear...
Rishaal doesn’t want to be linked to the gang warfare tearing the city apart, but he does want Fala to stop protesting outside his business. We make a good Persuasion check, and he reluctantly agrees. Vervain goes back to Fala to give them the good news. They will offer us 15% off at their shop!
“It’s great to have folk around here who can get things done. Thank the Gods you moved to the Alley.”
Rishaal will give us a 50% discount on one book or scroll, too.

hm how about the rook/stiletto for the blorbo &c. asks?
FUCK YEAH FUCK YEAH LET’S G O
blorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most): call me cliché but it has to be myfanwy. i’m just so enamored by characters who are simultaneously two or more people, in this case because of her amnesia, because she has such a dichotomy with herself that Fascinates me. also she’s funny as hell and i think we need more unhinged female characters who are canonically Just Okay looking (if i have to pick a Non main character favorite i’d probably go with shantay or eckhart)
scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped): i am going to skrunklyfy heretic gubbins. a balding forty-five year old man. because he is the Only Character in this series who can even Remotely be considered Cute (except maybe the gestalt baby but ew)
scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave): INGRID. FUCKING. WOODHOUSE. she is my wife my love my beautiful hero in purple she does so much and is responsible for the greatest fucking plot twist in the book i am obsessed with her oh my God (second to her is pawn alan summerhill—li’l pawn alan—because he is just my scrimblo)
glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week): bronwyn!! she’s a brilliant addition to the story that addresses a lot of the plot holes and also the direct reason behind one of my favorite scenes in the book. she’s just So Normal and it really works to complement the rest of the story. also? the greek woman. just perfect. and and! wolfgang. my bunny boy wolfgang
poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave): alas. graaf gerd de leeuwen. he is a flayed mass of muscle and goo inside a fish tank with a propensity for splashing when he’s mad. and he’s So Bad at threats it’s ridiculous. what’s not to love (other than all of him)
horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason): hmm. pawn poppat. he feels like he’d be easy to rile up. or!! graaf ernst von suchtlen!!! listen even if the naked man that grew from the human heart that was mailed to my po box turned out to be my ally he is still A Naked Man Grown From A Human Heart Mailed To My PO Box. he deserves a little retaliation
eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell): conrad grantchester. all of the gestalts. noel bittner (although i think getting swallowed by a dragon in canon means he’s already there). conrad grantchester. gestalt again. grantchester. grantchester
noticing that all of these characters are from the rook and i didn’t mention stiletto at all. not that i don’t like stiletto it’s just that felicity and odette fill the same niche myfanwy does in my brain and i haven’t read it as much as the rook so i don’t remember all the side character’s names shjshs
honorable mentions for characters that live rent free in my head:
- alrich
- lady farrier
- the flesh cube
- odette’s little brother
- pre-amnesia myfanwy
- the psychic duck
- felicity And odette obviously
- frau blumen
- random protester #1
- the woman that staked out the vampire den
- pawn monica jarvis-reed
- the gay bishops murdered in the 1600s
- stabby crystal man
- alrich again
thank you for the asks cupola!!!

Schanke answers, Nick, I don't want to be banging on doors at Fiori's house especially if they're sitting there talking there peacefully. I mean, I'd look a little bit like a fool. Nick says, Okay, call him first. I'm on my way. Nick hands the telephone receiver to Natalie who fumbles with it and her dinner. Natalie says, So, what happened? As she turns around Nick has flown away leaving Natalie very confused.

The Rosscars 2020
Tumblr media
Wow. It’s that time of year again, only this time it’s different because it’s on a blog that no one will read! (hold for applause) Welcome to the first annual online publication for the Rosscars (hold for applause while the reader acknowledges how positively droll it is that I combined my name with “Oscars”). Who can forget such indelible Rosscar memories like when Steven Soderbergh surprised us all and won Best Director for Out of Sight or Bill Irwin’s beautiful speech upon winning Best Supporting Actor for Rachel Getting Married?! The Rosscars mean something different to everyone, but we all know that they mean quality choices made by a committee of one schmuck. This year’s Rosscars are bizarre because in an effort to be more like the Academy guidelines, film’s nominated have been released between January 1, 2020 and February 28, 2021. As usual, theatrical windows be damned, streamers are welcome. Of course, I have my gripes. I like categorizing movies by release year – specifically, when they become available to the plain old public like yours truly – not at festivals, limited runs in NYC and LA. Well, the Oscars are still weeks away and I feel like everybody wants to forget about last year and move onto this one that we’re already three months into - So here are my awards for the films, performers, and craftspeople that stood out in a pretty exceptional year for movies even though distribution was stranger than ever.
Tumblr media
**A few caveats and guidelines to Rosscar newcomers (which I imagine is just a formality since we all know the Rosscars so well)**
The rules and categories are a little different around here. First, not every category is honored directly. That’s for a few reasons, chiefly that I don’t feel qualified to reward the technical categories properly – I suppose I should say that I feel less qualified to do so than the “above the line” categories. In keeping with the Academy standard, there are five nominees in each category, except for Best Picture, Best Non-Fiction/Documentary Feature, and Best Ensemble Cast which allow up to ten. Every category, save those three, will have the possibility of honorable mentions, because I want to highlight some things that just barely missed the cut. The narrowing down of a lot of these categories was awfully tough.
Nominees are listed alphabetically, and the winners are in bold and italics.
Tumblr media
Also, it’s important to keep in mind that I couldn’t see everything (this isn’t a job and it’s still $20 to rent The Father, y’all) and that these are just the opinions of one (self-described) “bozo on the internet.” If you’re a reader and have different picks, feel free to share!
Special Commendations for some things that I want to recognize: • Ludwig Goransson for his Tenet score which is an absolute banger • The costumes of Emma. (Alexandra Byrne), Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (Ann Roth), and Small Axe (Jaqueline Durran, Sinéad Kidao, and Lisa Duncan) all struck me as exceptional • Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross with their scores for both Soul and Mank. Crazy that Pixar is working with the guy who made “Closer” • The cinematography of Da 5 Bloods (Newton Thomas Sigel), First Cow (Christopher Blauvelt), Beanpole (Kseniya Sereda), and A White, White Day (Maria von Hausswolff)
The Rosscars red carpet was, as usual, a bizarre affair. People filed into the theater and it seemed like the only encounters were awkward ones. Vin Diesel showed up in character as Bloodshot, Aaron Sorkin started getting really verbose about what a lovely night it was, and it became clear that most of the celebrities in attendance didn’t read their invitations closely enough to realize that this was not, in fact, the Academy Awards.
Everyone’s seated, and the show is under way. After a medley about the nominees this year by Common and Seth McFarlane that was more corny but clever than it was funny, the first official category is here, and the presenter is none other than... Ross!
Tumblr media
Best Supporting Actor:
1. Chadwick Boseman for Da 5 Bloods
2. Matthew Macfadyen for The Assistant
3. Jesse Plemmons for Judas and the Black Messiah
4. Paul Raci for Sound of Metal
5. Glynn Turman for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
Honorable Mentions:
• Lucas Hedges for Let Them All Talk
• Orion Lee for First Cow
• Bill Murray for On the Rocks
Tumblr media
Best Supporting Actress:
1. Vanessa Bayer for Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar
2. Candice Bergen for Let Them All Talk
3. Gina Rodriguez for Kajillionaire
4. Amanda Seyfried for Mank
5. Yuon Yuh-jung for Minari
Honorable Mentions:
• Jane Adams for She Dies Tomorrow
• Charin Alvarez for Saint Frances
• Talia Ryder for Never Rarely Sometimes Always
• Debra Winger for Kajillionaire
Tumblr media
Everyone loves a montage. The audience gets comfortable in their seats as the video screens start to show a montage of some of the most famous moments from Hollywood’s most magical movies. Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers waltz, gliding across a dance floor like two hovering angels. There’s a clip of Leo declaring himself king of the world in Titanic, the flying bicycles in ET, Bogart stares longingly into Bacall’s eyes, and then there’s some scene where Tom Cruise rides a motorcycle from 2010′s Knight and Day. The audience all seems confused how that last one got in there. The John Williams music swells as little Kevin McAllister screams when puts on aftershave. We see clips of Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver, Carrie Fisher’s Princess Leia embrace Harrison Ford’s Han Solo, Bruce Lee smoothly declares that boards don’t hit back and... wait... was that a clip from Michel Gondry’s Green Hornet with Seth Rogen? And that’s a clip from What Happens in Vegas... Bad Teacher... Vanilla Sky... Shrek 2... Any Given Sunday... Everyone is flummoxed. The last clip fades out and a sole editing credit appears: Cameron Diaz. The lights come up and there’s some applause, but mostly confused murmurs.
The ceremony has had a bit of a misstep, but nothing it can’t recover from, especially as the next category is announced over the PA, and it looks like the presenter is... Ross!
Best Ensemble Cast:

We have a break in the action and it looks like Darius Rucker has showed up to perform what he would have nominated for Best Original Song. The crowd is absolutely furious as he starts playing a song that apparently was in Trial of the Chicago Seven. An ocean of sonorous boos and curses overtakes the the once docile crowd. The Rock just ripped his chair from out of the ground. Jane Lynch somehow smuggled in a civil war era flintlock pistol that she’s now pointing at the stage! Suddenly, the crowd unifies around what started as a confident chant of one lone audience member - John C Reilly. It’s growing... Ja Ja Ding Dong, Ja Ja Ding Dong, Ja Ja Ding Dong - it’s like the macabre circus performers from Tod Browning’s Freaks, but instead of chanting “Gooble Gobble” they’re clearly pining for Darius to change his tune to the silly and delightful jam from Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. Darius, scared for his life, leaves the stage, but here come Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams to deliver the goods. Busy Philips and Michelle Williams burst into tears. Tom Hanks nods in approval. A segment saved by brave artists placating a toxic group of fans... we’ve just witnessed a live version of the Snyder Cut, folks.
Jack Nicholson seems completely unfazed, giving a thumbs up to the camera and blowing a kiss to the next presenter. Coming to the stage is... Ross... again...

Jimmy Fallon has come out on stage to do a bit about the pandemic and watching movies at home. People are just absolutely not having it. He tries not to laugh at his own jokes while doing what I guess is technically a pretty good impression of Dr. Fauci interviewing James Corden as Martin Scorsese (the less said of this impression, the better) on what is or isn’t cinema. The bit doesn’t track and Fallon is absolutely tanking. The producers cut away from the stage to spare the viewers at home from this monstrosity. We see crowd shots of Millie Bobby Brown shaking her head in dismay, Colin Firth is simultaneously grimacing and trying to stave off laughter, Cynthia Erivo is texting, and director Tom Hooper is taking notes for his next film. Corden yells, “Carpool Karaoke! Remember?!” Ron Howard has fainted. This thing is almost completely off the rails.
Coming back to the stage is the next presenter, a clearly embarrassed... Ross! He’s in a total flop sweat, but stumbles his way through a joke about how Fallon should try co-hosting the Oscars with James Franco sometime. There are scant chuckles throughout a crowd that mostly just wants to see who won and go home.
Best Director:
1. Christopher Nolan for Tenet
2. Spike Lee for Da 5 Bloods
3. Steve McQueen for Small Axe
4. Kelly Reichardt for First Cow

Accepting the award for best picture is none other than Eve, the cow actor who played the titular First Cow! The audience is enamored with how graceful she looks in her cow gown, and her speech, though indecipherable, is likely simple, observational, and deeply profound for those who speak cow.
Wow, what a ceremony! Hearts were broken, property was damaged, dreams were fulfilled... blood was shed? Damn it, Meryl Streep came in and mugged Charlie Kaufman before absconding with the trophy. Oddly, she’s a previous winner, so the attack isn’t out of need for hardware. People are reading through articles about production on Adaptation for potential motives. Streep made time for a photo opportunity, but remains at large.
Tumblr media
I could go on ad infinitum about all of these nominees and winners themselves and why they did or didn’t make the cut, but that’d be better served in a different piece. For now, my thoughts on most of these can be found on the Best of 2020 write-up and over on my Letterboxd. And, as always, these awards can be revoked and redistributed at will, so don’t get too cozy with that statue, Danny Bilson!
On behalf of the RAOGL (Rosscars Association of One Guy at a Laptop), thanks for reading, and stay tuned as we’re establishing a tip line for anyone has seen Ms. Streep or her stolen valor Rosscar. We’ll see you next year. Keep watching movies, and keep arbitrarily quantifying them in terms of subjective quality!

Kevin Cage of @spotlightsaga reviews… I Love Dick (S01E02) The Conceptual Fuck Airdate: May 12, 2017 @amazonvideo Ratings: @amazon streaming only Score: 8.25/10
***********SPOILERS BELOW**********
Just like the first episode of ‘I Love Dick’, the second is over in a flash. It happens so quickly, so ferociously fast, with these seemingly large events that have a heavy significance on these characters, that they are almost too fast to catch. There’s irony in there somewhere because I can see someone easily professing that not much is happening, but in its characterization so much is transpiring I can almost feel my neck break from the whiplash. The episode opens with who I am assuming to be the two head honchos of the Venice Film Festival where Chris’ film had to be pulled because of music rights. They are attempting to watch the film and it looks straight up awful. It’s a lot like the French-Belgian film referenced in this very episode, Chantal Akerman’s 1974 black and white, supposedly charged with raw feminism ‘Je, Tu, Il, Elle’, just without any kind of hypnotic beat, sensuality, or weird lesbian sex scene where two women wrestle around in the bed, looking like an early WWF Women’s Wrestling Match during Post-Attitude Era when women with actual talent and showmanship were actually in the ring. Sorry, I have really weird, repressed, mixed feelings towards that film. Anyway, the two Italian Men toss it because they can’t take it anymore and then we cut back to Marfa, TX. Prepare for lots of cuts, I am very well aware of the presence of editors Julie Cohen & Christal Khatib.
Again there are some really strange, very human moments in this episode. I personally haven’t read the book, but my bestie in Brooklyn raves about it, even calling it her favorite. I keep going back to three big moments in the episode and I’m running them through my mind trying to figure out where these people are coming from. The first is when Chris shows up and interrupts Dick’s seminar, much to the chagrin of Sylvere, who believes that Chris attempting to attend Dick’s seminar is crossing a line in their fantasy that he’s just not comfortable with. Chris could give two shits, obviously this isn’t really a two way street, and shows up anyway… Later lying to Sylvere about being able to get in, claiming that it was full.
She brings a laptop with her terrible film on it and she’s literally a hot mess, once again a possible reference to 'Je, Tu, Il, Elle’… Her phone goes off, she’s bumbling all over the place, Dick dismisses his class and watches a few seconds of her horrible, horrible film and she legit, *and I can’t get over it*, but she legit strokes his head as he’s bent over watching the film. The gesture, the moment, his response to immediately shut the laptop and tells Chris, 'Its not my thing,’ It all sent me into a sort-of paralyzing shock. WTF just happened? Chris freaks out and points out that he hasn’t made art in 7 years and that brick he had set out as an art piece wasn’t art at all… To which he affirmed his love for straight lines. The rich metaphor isn’t lost on me, I died laughing and am chuckling as I’m writing this but I think it’s a combination of that comment and everything that happened so fast in that scene. My love for it increases with repeat views.
Meanwhile, Sylvere is having his own awkward encounters with the woman he met in the first episode, Toby (India Menuez)… This one I had to watch twice as well. Both Sylvere and Chris might have reinvigorated their sex life with this weird sexual fantasy about the mysterious, straight line loving 'Dick’, but they are tanking in the Marfa social scene. Sylvere questions Toby’s taste in art, finding out that her project is about 'looking at hardcore porn without judgement’, and verbatim, 'So I reduce it to its shapes.’ He takes the judgement further and calls her a child and asks her why she’s obsessed with porn, then reduces her to her beauty. The ironic and stunningly ignorant comment is met with the long pause from Toby, striking facial emotional-responding realization and then she simply tells Sylvere, 'You’re awful.’ And again the scene cuts fast, it’s almost dizzying, like I don’t have time to react. The cut is to a red screen with Chris’ words appearing large in and in charge on the screen, 'Dear Dick, I will not be muzzled.’ Only later when I’m sorting out my feelings on the episode, I find myself laughing at the quick edits, and just slightly tonally jarring direction led by the great Kimberly Pierce (a woman who literally burst on to the scene in '99 with the Oscar Winning 'Boys Don’t Cry’). I don’t even know what to think.
Chris returns home after her disastrous meeting with Dick, finding Devon (Roberta Colindrez) installing a water heater or some sort of handy-woman work (see what I did there?), and after the initial shock that someone is in her house, Chris goes right to ranting. Asking her if she knows who the director Maya Deren is, saying that Maya is supposed to be the most important female director of all time. Devon replies No, which I’m guessing most people wouldn’t know her either. Deren was big in the way Indy Bands are big now, but in the 40’s. I know film pretty well, but Meren is mainly a mystery, and while I’m familiar with a lot of films in the 50’s, they are more of Monster Movie in taste (I love classic, iconic trash 50’s cinema, like 'The Blob’, 'Alligator Man’, 'Them’). Trancey, experimental avant-garde types… No the 40’s would be far too early for me to consume that type of genre, despite its cultural importance.
It’s just hilarious to me to see Chris go on and on about how she likes mainstream directors and hates Sofia Coppola, who I’ve always loved btw… Chris cites Sofia’s 'perfect chestnuts highlights’ as another reason she hates her, 'Ooh, hey, how’d you get that brunette? A lotta money!’ I’m literally dead. 😂 Devon starts to follow her around, she’s literally mesmerized by Chris’ unhinged rant. Chris is now just asking rhetorical questions and ranting on as Devon almost salivates at Chris’ crazy as a pure inhibited spectator, 'It is a wonder that any woman could think of herself as an artist.’ Devon actually responds here… 'Uhm, I’m an artist too, so…’ Chris barely recognizes she spoke, muttering back, 'Oh, I didn’t realize’, like that has any bearing on the conversation that could’ve blossomed from there. I’m usually pretty empathetic but if I wasn’t laughing so hard from her rant and the Sofia Coppola comments, who once again I’ve always been fond of, I probably would have reached through the tv and pulled Chris’ hair a bit. I wonder what kind of rant Chris would produce about the cultural cancer of Oxygen’s 'Bad Girls Club’. In a perfect world, there would be an extra scene that Amazon would allow subscribers to see an outtake of this very scenario.
I guess Chris’ interaction with Dick is so jarring that she starts to rip down all the letters she wrote to Dick from the lines strung across her bedroom. And it appears Chris’ visit to Dick’s class was so jarring we see him sitting on his porch staring intently into the Great wide Texan open, clearly annunciating her name in full, 'Chris Kraus’. The editing is fantastic in these final moments (tho to be fair it’s great the whole way through). We see Devon shirtless, confidently writing as if a lightbulb is literally shining bright above her head. Sylvere somberly mopes back through town to his home. This is when we cut to 'Je, Tu, Il, Elle’ where the protagonist speaks about taking everything she had written and spreading it out, then just laying in bed. Cut to Chris laying in bed looking up at the empty wire dawned with clothespins that once held all the letters to Dick, the same letters that had Sylvere and Chris fucking like they had just met each other. Sylvere walks in professing that he hates the town and tries to sit next to Chris and touch her, but without the letters there is no longer warmth and a red pulsing glow in their bedroom. She jerks away from him and claims her 'skin is tight’. Yeesh.
Suki & Geoff arrive at Devon’s trailer and she reveals what she was fervently writing about… A play… About a couple from New York… A woman… She wants to 'become somebody’… 'But she hates herself’… Another quick cut, God I’m in love with these editors… Chris is packing up all her letters to Dick. Cut to Dick who sees a snake, slithering in the very opposite manner of the straight lines he claims to love so much. He arranges multiple rocks in the shape of the slithering, wavy snake and runs along side of them. Is this Dick beginning to let go of his rigid nature? Cut back to Chris who is walking into Dick Jarrett’s office and drops off a box containing all the letters she had written Dick, and so passionately made love to her husband under. The box is tied with a single ribbon, and there’s a dead moth at one corner of the box with a card… 'To: Dick Jarrett / From: Chris Kraus’… Cut to RED. That’s the perfect color alright.

A guide to the 18 counties and why you should/shouldn’t support each one (version 2.0)
Hello! It’s been a couple of years since I did this original guide, so I thought it was time for an updated version as after all, a lot has happened since then.
All the confirmed overseas players I’ve found have been included, the most significant Kolpaks (not all though, because there are many), and the most recent England/Ireland/Scotland players as well…and then some just to look out for.
Without further ado then, here is a relatively comprehensive guide to choosing your county for the year ahead…
Derbyshire
Overseas & Kolpak: Logan van Beek, Kane Richardson (T20), Ravi Rampaul
England/Ireland/Scotland: Mark Watt
England prospects: Matt Critchley, Hamidullah Qadri
Why you should support them: Who doesn’t love an underdog? Quite a bit of young talent around, including in Hamidullah Qadri the first county cricketer born in the 21st century (welp)
Why you shouldn’t support them: They always seem to fly under the radar, and I still haven’t met a Derbyshire supporter (please reveal yourselves if you are out there!)
Durham
Overseas & Kolpak: Cameron Bancroft, D’Arcy Short (T20)
England/Ireland/Scotland: Ben Stokes, Mark Wood, Stuart Poynter
England prospects: Josh Coughlin, Matty Potts
Why you should support them: One of the leading producers of England players over the years, and who have suffered a lot at the hands of the ECB. Who doesn’t have a soft spot for Durham?
Why you shouldn’t support them: It’s been a tough few years due to off-field circumstances, and a lot of their top players have left in the process. Likely to struggle again.
Essex
Overseas & Kolpak: Peter Siddle, Adam Zampa (T20), Mohammad Amir (T20), Simon Harmer, Cameron Delport, Matt Quinn
England/Ireland/Scotland: Alastair Cook, Tom Westley, Ravi Bopara
England prospects: Jamie Porter, Daniel Lawrence, Nick Browne, Sam Cook
Why you should support them:  The place to get your Alastair Cook fix post-England retirement. They’re also a lovely bunch of lads, and with their unexpected 2017 CC win have become one of the division’s leading teams.
Why you shouldn’t support them: Have a notable Kolpak contingent, and are just one of those teams for whom when things go wrong, it happens spectacularly.
Glamorgan
Overseas & Kolpak: Shaun Marsh, Marnus Labuschagne, Colin Ingram, Marchant de Lange
England/Ireland/Scotland: Ruaidhri Smith, Timm van der Gugten (well, Netherlands)
England prospects: Prem Sisodiya
Why you should support them: Flying the flag for Wales as the only county not based in England, and another underdog to root for as well. A decent pace bowling attack that should see them improve on last year.
Why you shouldn’t support them: Continually struggling, last year coming bottom of the County Championship and with no trophies in a long time.
Gloucestershire
Overseas & Kolpak: Michael Klinger (T20), Dan Worrall
England/Ireland/Scotland:  Adrian Neill
England prospects: Ryan Higgins, Ben Charlesworth
Why you should support them: A team with an exceptional history in short-form cricket, and though they tend to be underdogs nowadays, can still prove themselves worth more than the sum of their parts.
Why you shouldn’t support them: Have tended to stay mid-table in Division Two over the past few years without making huge strides forward. Though known for limited overs success, form can be variable.
Hampshire
Overseas & Kolpak: Aiden Markram, Kyle Abbott, Fidel Edwards, Rilee Rossouw
England/Ireland/Scotland: Liam Dawson, Mason Crane, James Vince
England prospects: Sam Northeast, James Fuller, Aneurin Donald
Why you should support them: Often strong performers in the shortest forms, winning the one day cup last year and having been regulars at T20 finals day in the last decade.
Why you shouldn’t support them:  Tend to scrape their Division One safety in the CC every year, so prepare for the stress. Also one of the counties people love to hate, thanks in part to high profile Kolpak signings and the attitude of their chairman.
Kent
Overseas & Kolpak: Matt Renshaw, Adam Milne (T20), Mohammed Nabi (T20), Heino Kuhn
England/Ireland/Scotland: Joe Denly, Sam Billings
England prospects: Daniel Bell-Drummond, Zak Crawley
Why you should support them: A steadily improving county in all formats, reaching the one day final and being promoted from the CC last year. Soon to be 43, the evergreen Darren Stevens is also worthy of a mention here too.
Why you shouldn’t support them: Another team with a notable Kolpak contingent in addition to those above. A team with little experience of the first division as well, so who will be facing a challenge.
Lancashire
Overseas & Kolpak: Joe Burns, Glenn Maxwell, James Faulkner (T20), Dane Vilas
England/Ireland/Scotland: James Anderson, Jos Buttler, Haseeb Hameed, Keaton Jennings, Liam Livingstone
England prospects: Saqib Mahmood, Alex Davies, Matthew Parkinson
Why you should support them:  With a strong squad it would be a surprise not to see them promoted this year, especially with the bowling attack that managed to pick up the most bonus points last year. It also looks like they’ve final gotten rid of that god-awful green kit, too.
Why you shouldn’t support them: It’s Lancashire, what more is there to say? (I had to get a dig in here somewhere, didn’t I?)
Leicestershire:
Overseas & Kolpak: Mohammed Abbas, Colin Ackermann, Mark Cosgrove
England prospects: Will Davis
Why you should support them:  Just lovely, and definitely improving as a team after many years at the bottom of the pack. Always developing young, talented players. The only ground I’ve been to where I’ve been offered a bag of Sweets Or Weed.
Why you shouldn’t support them: Well known for their top players leaving, and another big exodus took place at the end of the season. Supporting them can be painful, too.
Middlesex
Overseas & Kolpak: Mujeeb Ur Rahman (T20), AB de Villiers (T20), Ross Taylor
England/Ireland/Scotland: Eoin Morgan, Steven Finn, Toby Roland-Jones, Tim Murtagh, Paul Stirling, Sam Robson
England prospects: Nick Gubbins, Ethan Bamber, Tom Barber, Tom Helm, Max Holden
Why you should support them: A squad with a lot of English and Irish talent and hot prospects who will be striving for promotion this year. And there’s the Lord’s factor, because where better to watch cricket?
Why you shouldn’t support them: Have underperformed in the two years following their CC win, and it’s best not to even mention the shorter forms.
Northamptonshire
Overseas & Kolpak: Temba Bavuma, Faheem Ashraf (T20), Jason Holder, Blessing Muzarabani, Richard Levi
England/Ireland/Scotland: Kyle Coetzer
England prospects: Ben Curran
Why you should support them: A team without big resources who have become one of the more successful T20 teams in the country. Also, I love Temba Bavuma in general and just want that stated here.
Why you shouldn’t support them: That T20 success that made them famous went spectacularly downhill last year, finishing well adrift at the bottom of the group. Have lost important players since, too.
Nottinghamshire
Overseas & Kolpak: Dan Christian (T20), James Pattinson
England/Ireland/Scotland: Stuart Broad, Jake Ball, Alex Hales, Ben Duckett
England prospects: Joe Clarke, Zak Chappell, Matthew Carter, Tom Moores, Ben Slater
Why you should support them: A team with a lot of England talent from the past, present, and likely the future. Have strengthened their squad a lot over the winter and will be looking to challenge on all fronts.
Why you shouldn’t support them: Not too popular for buying a lot of their talent, particularly with their winter recruitment. Have also underperformed in the longer format despite a strong squad.
Somerset
Overseas & Kolpak: Azhar Ali, Jerome Taylor (T20)
England/Ireland/Scotland: Jack Leach, Dom Bess, Craig Overton, Josh Davey
England prospects: Jamie Overton, George Bartlett
Why you should support them: A well-liked county, by everyone really apart from the ECB. Also the home of Marcus Trescothick, making centuries into his forties, and probably the best place in the country for spin bowling.
Why you shouldn’t support them: It always ends in pain, doesn’t it? A great track record for finishing high among the runners up, but not getting over the line, which has also returned among the last couple of seasons.
Surrey
Overseas & Kolpak: Aaron Finch, Dean Elgar, Morne Morkel
England/Ireland/Scotland: Sam Curran, Tom Curran, Ollie Pope, Rory Burns, Liam Plunkett, Ben Foakes, Jason Roy, Mark Stoneman
England prospects: Amar Virdi, Will Jacks, Conor McKerr
Why you should support them: England players a plenty, with many coming through the academy system at the moment. The reigning champions of the CC and the favourites to win again, and should compete in the other formats.
Why you shouldn’t support them: One of the definitive love-to-hate counties among the 18, and another who like Notts are regularly called out on their spending.
Sussex
Overseas & Kolpak: Rashid Khan (T20), Mir Hamza, David Wiese, Stiaan van Zyl
England/Ireland/Scotland: Chris Jordan, Tymal Mills
England prospects: Jofra Archer, George Garton, Delray Rawlins
Why you should support them: An up-and-coming team, coached by the wonderful Jason Gillespie. Particularly exciting fast-bowling stocks, and last year’s T20 runners up who will want to go one better. Also, Luke Wright.
Why you shouldn’t support them: For whatever reason, they tend to be bad at 50 over cricket, so probably not the team to root for if you’re after that Lord’s final.
Warwickshire
Overseas & Kolpak: Jeetan Patel, Ashton Agar (T20)
England/Ireland/Scotland: Chris Woakes, Olly Stone, Ian Bell
England prospects: Will Rhodes, Ed Pollock, Sam Hain, Henry Brookes, Dom Sibley
Why you should support them: A likeable team, as they would be with Chris Woakes and Ian Bell. After a few years with an aging squad, now have quite a few young players who have either come through or been given a second chance from elsewhere.
Why you shouldn’t support them: Though they’ve bounced straight back from division two, they really crashed out during their relegation season so their return to the top flight might be a learning curve.
Worcestershire
Overseas & Kolpak: Callum Ferguson, Martin Guptil (T20), Wayne Parnell
England/Ireland/Scotland: Moeen Ali
England prospects: Pat Brown, Josh Tongue, Dillon Pennington
Why you should support them: A team with a lot of strong homegrown young talent, who won the nation’s hearts on their way to their T20 Blast win in 2018. Led by Moeen Ali, and if you don’t appreciate them for that then what’s up with you mate?
Why you shouldn’t support them: The ultimate yo-yo team, constantly being promoted or relegated whilst rarely staying in one place, so not one to support if you don’t want the sadness every other year.
Yorkshire
Overseas & Kolpak: Duanne Olivier
England/Ireland/Scotland: Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Adil Rashid, David Willey, Gary Ballance
England prospects: Ben Coad, Matthew Fisher, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Harry Brook
Why you should support them: They’re my team and I would die for them, the best team you can support. In seriousness though, they feature a lot of England players from past and present and tend to challenge across all competitions in some degree. Look strongest in the shorter forms.
Why you shouldn’t support them: Another love-to-hate county, as us Yorkshire fans do tend to go on about our successes. It has been a tricky couple of years as well, with a struggling batting line-up and no major reinforcements on that front.
