Pregnancy Trimester - Everything you need to know
What is a ‘normal,’ full-term** pregnancy trimester**? It lasts for 40 weeks and can go up to 37 to 42 weeks. It’s broadly divided into three trimesters and each trimester lasts from 12 and 14 weeks or roughly 3 months. Each trimester entails a certain type of hormonal and physiological changes. A growing baby can affect your body and mind in more ways than one. So, it is important to be aware of these specific changes in your body and this helps you deal with the changes in your body better and prepare yourself for the upcoming nine months.
All about Pregnancy – The Three Trimesters
Tumblr media
Pregnancy includes three trimesters and in all these three phases there are dramatic fetal development or changes till it culminates at 40 weeks; a few infants are delivered way before the week 40 and these babies are considered premature. Premature infants may have problems with their growth and development. Find out about all about the defining symptoms of the pregnancy trimester and visit the best Gynecology hospital if you face any health issues.
1. First Trimester (0 to 13 Weeks)
The baby’s growth is maximum in the first trimester. In this period the baby's body structure gradually changes and the organ systems gradually start to develop. A woman needs to be very careful during this time as the incidence of miscarriages and birth defects multiply during this period.
Most women report that the body undergoes multiple changes during the first trimester and a number of symptoms that bother them such as fatigue, nausea, breast tenderness, and the frequency of urination also increases. Every woman has different experiences. For example, there are a number of psychological effects too such as feeling wired all the time or an increased energy level during this period, while others may feel too tired and emotional. You need to bring out several  lifestyle changes during this time period such as the following,
Avoid smoking and cut back on your drinking alcohol. Also, the partake of certain medicines can lead to serious pregnancy complications and birth defects, so avoid them at all costs.
Ensure you include the right amount of folic acid to prevent neural tube defects.
2. Second Trimester (14 to 26 Weeks)
Most of the uncomfortable symptoms gradually disappear in the second trimester of pregnancy and is aptly referred to as the "golden period.” In the second trimester, you're more likely to experience increased energy levels and decreased nausea, improved sleep patterns, and so on. However, you may not be experiencing your old symptoms but you may start experiencing a couple of new symptoms, such as leg cramps, back pain, abdominal pain, constipation, and heartburn.
The other ‘good symptoms’ you may start experiencing are the baby's first fluttering movements, in around 16 to 20 weeks. Also, since you may be feeling a little less nauseous, you may start seeing a change in your appetite and may start gaining weight.  Most women are tempted to eat more or ‘eat for two’ but your focus should be on eating nutrient-dense foods, rather than eating empty calories that add nothing to your health, they just add to your weight. Talk to your experienced Gynaecologist in Hyderabad to gain the right weight and not put on too many kilos. As too much weight gain may cause other problems. A realistic and healthy weight gain is what you should aim for. The other symptoms that you may look for are varicose veins, nasal congestion, and backaches. Also, your baby may even start hearing and recognizing your voice during the second trimester.
3. Third Trimester (27 to 40 Weeks)
The final stretch of pregnancy is what excites you and also makes you more anxious for the birth of your baby. You may start experiencing some specific physical symptoms such as hemorrhoids, urinary incontinence, and sleeping problems. All these symptoms occur because of the increasing size of your uterus and can expand from roughly 2 ounces before pregnancy to 2.5 pounds right at the time of birth.
The third trimester can last until the 28th week until the baby is born. The third trimester will mean you will have to meet your healthcare provider more frequently.
Your doctor will ask you to go through the following tests,
• Test your urine for protein
• Check your blood pressure
• Get to hear the fetal heart rate.
• Measure your fundal height (that is the approximate uterus length)
• Check your hands and legs for swelling.
Your doctor will find out more about the baby’s position and check your cervix to see how your body is preparing for the upcoming birth.
Due Date
A full-term pregnancy lasts anywhere between 37 to 42 weeks.
Tumblr media
Due date or the estimated date of delivery (EDD) is determined according to the first day of your last period, but in all actuality, you may conceive two weeks after this date. This type of dating system is apt for women who have regular menstrual cycles and it goes without saying it does not work for women who have irregular periods. If you are unable to remember your last mentrual period. You need to find out other methods to find the right EDD.
Another way of finding the right due date is to carry out an ultrasound in the first trimester as in some cases there may be chances of early fetal development. Pregnancy is an amazing experience and is unlike anything you experience in your lifetime. So, it is important to ensure that your entire pregnancy goes along smoothly and for that, you must pay visits to your doctor at regular intervals. Babies are born healthy when they get regular prenatal care. There are just a few simple things that you must follow they are,
Take your prenatal vitamins,
Regularly attend your doctor’s chamber,
Undergo the recommended tests,
Ensure you give a healthy start to your baby’s life,
Reduce stress levels,
Do some doctor-approved exercise, to keep your blood sugar levels and blood pressure levels in check.
In the end, try to be happy and enjoy this phase as much as you can! Happy pregnancy!

That One Cramp(TM), aka “yes, you can get traumatized with menstrual cramps”
So, period cramps.
I'm part of the large percentage of the female population that experiences mentrual cramps. Luckily I'm NOT part of the small percentage whose pain is so severe they literaly cannot get out of bed. My cramps come only on the first and/or second days, in waves, with dips where it hurts a little less and spikes where it hurts a little more. I generally don't need anything to get by, apart from certain spikes which are just too uncomfortable to allow me to focus on what I should be doing, by which point I pop a painpill and after a while the grinding doesn't feel as bad and I'm good to go again.
BUT THEN, That One Cramp(TM) happened
A few years ago, beggining of another menstrual cicle, I go to sleep as usual. But at around 1-2am I wake up in agony, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't panic for a moment before I located myself. It was a cramp unlike any other I’ve have before or since, and the worst pain I’d fetl in my entire life. It felt like there was something with Too.Many.Teeth. gnawing away at my insides. Pills. Painpills. Need. Now. I tried getting up to get them but I couldn't stand up; it felt like if I did my muscles would rip themselves apart, and instead I just fell off the bed. Help. Someone. MOM. My parents were in the next room and so I started calling, although even that was painfull and I couldn't call very loud. But thankfuly she heard and came to get me, and was ofc scared when she saw me on the floor. I explained I needed painpills now and she went to get them; she already knew I was on my period so she knew which pills were. She helped me take them and left the packet and a glass of water with me in case I needed another (which I did) and I asked her to go back to bed, I'm so sorry for bothering you like this I already woke you up I don't want you to stay up all night. She tried to get me back to bed but I couldn’t get up and said to just let me stay on the floor for a while, I'll get back up when I can, and so she left. I don't know how much time I spent like that, but it felt like fucking AGES because the painpills take some time to kick in and remember what I said about them coming in waves? The spikes are sudden and piercing, but the dips happen gradually over a minute or so, so gradually I often only notice I'm in a dip when the next spike happens, and it's not like the pain completely goes away in a dip anyway, and I'm still sore and it still hurts and it just feels like the pain is getting progressively worse, oh gods, I'm gonna die. So I stayed there, curled up in a ball on the corner of my room, sweating, shaking, trying to massage my belly but not sure whether it was helping or worsening or both or neither, it just hurts everywhere and I’m confused, tired, sleepy, just waiting for a dip so I can try and get myself back to bed, but when I though I was in a dip there came another spike and I curled up tighter and me legit thinking I was gonna die. One of the first noticeable effects of the painpills I use is an increase of the duration of the dips, and so I noticed I wasn't hurting so much for a while and I could move, and took a chance, got up slowly and got my water and my pills on the nightstand and got under the blankets just in time before the next spike kicked in, oh gods, it's not over yet, I'm still gonna die. I don't know how long I still stayed awake, but I know I woke up exhausted. I felt uneasy, unsafe. I felt almost violated, how, why did this happen, how did my own fucking uterus did this, how did it not tear itself to pieces with that, or did you actually teart yourself to pieces? What happened?
It's been years, like I said, and I never had another one like that, thank the gods. They come and they go, if it gets too bad for comfort I take a painpill and the Sun keeps shinning. But that was legit traumatizing, no hyperbole. Oh, I'm on my period, no big deal, pop a pad and a tampon and good to go. But then a little cramp creeps in, and I get flashbacks to that night and I can't stop thinking about that, and that anxiety seems to make the pain worse. It was the weekend, I was home and with people who could help me and I could rest for as long as I needed, but what if next time it happens I'm at class? At a mall or someplace where I cannot wait it out? What if it happens when I'm driving? Just last night I stayed up almost to 3am, because a stronger-than-usual cramp decided to make itself known just as I was trying to fall asleep and got me so scared I'd get That One Cramp(TM) again I simply couldn't fall asleep even when it disolved into the usual low-rumble grinding. It took me taking a painpill just in case and another hour before I properly fell asleep and luckily today's a holiday so I could sleep in, but what if it wasn't?
In all honesty, I feared for my life. It was fucking terrifying. I laugh at the bruises I get from kickboxing and look forward to getting new bruises, hey dude, check out the bruises on my arms, it was whoever, good think I kept my guard up, hahaha. I once tripped and fell and hit my head on a wall corner, breaking my glasses, getting head trauma and a couple weeks at the hospital and almost losing an eye because I hit EXACTLY on the orbit and if it weren't for my glasses pushing my eye in on the impact and taking the brunt of the damage I'd be half-blind, and I laugh at that and proudly display the star-shaped scar on my eyebulb, hey look, that's when I broke my skull, hahaha. But that cramp was the worse pain I've ever felt in my life up until and since then. I'm writing this because I'm having the usual mild cramps I'm used to, and as usual it takes me back to That One Cramp, and I can’t take my mind off it and I’m genuinely afraid. Nothing unusual is happening, but what if it does? I don't want to go throught that again. Not in a million years. No, no, no. Please don't. I don't know how you messed up the hormone doses so badly that time, uterus, but please, for the love of all that is holy, don't do that again, please.
My heart goes out to all the women for whom dysmenorrhea is an all-too familiar word.

I just realized that the post I wrote earlier sounded a bit like I was recommending smoking as a mean to sleep better and...guys. NO. Absolutely not. You can take up smoking for any number of reasons and I won’t judge you for it, but DO NOT take it up as some kind of “remedy” for insomnia bc someone on the internet said it worked! Everyone reacts differently to it and it might make things worse for you and then it’ll be really hard to stop. And, like. Smoking IS bad. I’ve been smoking on and off for the past 2-3 years, so it’s nothing new for me, but if you can avoid starting, don’t start. (My off was mainly my father saying “if you’ll stop I’ll stop”) (And then he didn’t) (Even when he was diagnosed with cancer) (Which is practically gone at this point but, still, dumb move). If I choose this way to deal with my mental illnesses, that’s on me. And smoking is still waaaay better than the other self harming tendencies I used to have, and I really don’t want to pick those up again.
Anyway! If any of you have sleeping problems that are interfering with your ability to do things during the day, you should definitely talk to your medic. They’ll first start with more “light” remedies (which take time to actually work, so be patient at first!) and if those don’t do anything they’ll probably switch to some sleep meds. Do not feel guilty for needing those! They can really help you enjoying your life!
But if your sleeping problems aren’t that bad, or you don’t want to build a tolerance (esp with benzodiazepines), or you’re already taking meds and just need an extra kick (esp in the last two cases you should still talk abt it with your medic), here are some “““natural””” remedies that worked out for me:
1) Aromatherapy! You can put some kind of diffuser in your room (try to avoid anything that burns, esp if you have breathing problems), but the method I found works best it to fill a spray bottle with water, add some drops of essential oil, shake it well and then spray it on your pillow/duvet before getting ready for bed. Some oils that work really well are: lavender (the best for sleeping, but it’s a strong smell and not everyone likes it), menthol/eucalyptus (my absolute favourite, it will make your bed smell super fresh even if it’s not exactly clean), lemon/sweet orange/verbena (if you like a more zesty smell, these also work great for stress).
2) Physical activity! If you can, moving around during the day will help you be more tired at night and fall asleep faster. It doesn’t have to be anything taxing, just a small walk will do! If you’re not used to exercise, start with a 15 minutes slow walk, then keep adding a bit more everyday. Do not exert yourself and absolutely stop if you’re in pain (once you know your limits you’ll know when to stop BEFORE you’re in pain, which is way better for your body). I now try to take at least a 30 minutes walk everyday, but I used to do it for 2-3 hours. It also did wonders for my back hernia. And bring a water bottle with you!
3) Turn off your devices! Ok, I’ll tell the truth: this is something I never managed to achieve bc I am Weak. But avoiding electronics (including tv) for 2-3 hours before going to bed would be best. There is also an app called Twilight which will gradually add red tones to your screen as night approaches (bc blue tones are supposed to keep you active and awake). (HAHA TUMBLR)
4) Valerian! You can either buy an infusion or, if you don’t like the taste, pills. It’s a common herb, I can usually find it both at the pharmacy and the grocery store.
5) Integrators! I only have experience with melanin and magnesium, and the second one is def better for me (it also helps with a lot of other things, like muscle cramps, mentrual cramps, pms, stress, etc...). If you can find and afford pure magnesium carbonate, go for that, but be aware that it’s gonna be expensive. Every night, rougly 2 hours before going to sleep, put two teaspoons in a glass of warm water, stir it until it dissolves completely (the water needs to become perfectly clear) and drink it. Give it a couple weeks to work properly tho. (If you can track your period, you can add another teaspoon the week before it’s supposed to start. Mine always sneaks up on me so it’s no use.)
6) Good eating habits! Another thing I half ass bc of my lack of will. Try to have a light dinner (esp cutting back on the carbs, save those for lunch) (also, light doesn’t mean “small”, don’t ever go to bed hungry bc you’ll either be unable to sleep or you will creep back in the kitchen at 3am to make instant ramen). There are some things that definitely should be avoided during the evening, which...I absolutely cannot remember. But there are also things that will help you sleep! A good to-go smoothie is banana, peanut butter and almond milk. The only thing that I practice is not drinking/eating anything with caffeine after 4pm. (2pm would be better, but what the hell I work with coffee. You can’t ask that of me.)
Obviously there are many more, but these are the ones I tested and found that worked for me. I heard people saying great things abt crystals and acupuncture (which I tried, but needles are a big NOPE for me), but I really don’t know anything abt those. If you have something to add or if I said some bullshit and you want to correct me, feel free to add to this post! For example, I have zero experience with methods specific to disabled people or anyone with chronic pain or mobility problems or even with mental illnesses different from mine (I have bipolar type 2, anxiety and executive dysfunction, as well as being a maladaptive daydreamer, so for those things all of the above should work just fine), and I’d love if someone could add something in that regard!
Sleep well cuties! <3

Read this! Especially the end...
I don’t normally write hear things but it has to be said from a different perspective. My brother is a gentleman. He is kind and understanding and would never do anything that is wrong if he knows it’s wrong. The other day, I was having bad cramps and he told me to “suck it up and just take a pain killer. You do this every month. It’s can’t be that bad”. First, I try to stay away from pills of any kind unless they are absolutely necessary. However he knows this so in response, I told him that I did research and scientists made a statement that mentrual cramps are as painful as a heart attack. He didn’t believe me so he asked my dad what a heart attack feels like. Sometimes they are just uncomfortable and sometimes the pain makes it nearly impossible to stand. Sound familiar, ladies? The thing is, my brother didn’t just accept that or apologize. He said, “what do you want me to say? Women are tough? Oh poor you?” I looked at him and said no. I don’t want pity. I want him to be aware: aware that when I’m in pain from cramps, it’s not something I can brush away. A soldier told him once what being shot feels like. My brother said that that is the most pain the soldier had been in and men are tougher because they will get shot and not complain but when women give birth they can’t contain the pain. I exploded on him. The Bible says in a passage “and pain such as child birth came down upon them and they trembled and wept and collapsed.” God didnt give them pain of being shot by an arrow, he gave them pain of child birth as the worst pain he could bestow upon those who wronged him. If you aren’t religious and dismissed that, I had my mom explain to me what labor feels like. She said everything hurts. It starts off as period cramps and you know it’s labor because those haven’t happened in 9 months. Everything hurts. People try to hold your hand and you can’t let them. Your clothes hurt, your hair hurts. You push a watermelon out of a hole that would be as thick as a pencil if even that. Now it’s not my brother’s fault he is ignorant. He is a wonderful man and tries his hardest but something he doesn’t understand is how women deal with pain.
So women: don’t blame men for what they say when they don’t know better. Educate them. If you are close enough to them, punch them in the dick because that is close to what period cramps feel like.
Men: don’t assume you are tougher. You weep and are crumpled when hit in the dick. Mentrual cramps feels like Mother Nature is punching us in our “dicks” constantly for a week straight while we bleed and continue to live our lives.
Mentrual pains have never been a good reason to take a break from life. They’re REALLY painful. They should be.

Just some pro periods tips
•Bladder control pads are much more comfortable and can be more absorbent than actual period pads. The tops actually feel like cotton or some other soft fabriic versus the plastic tops of period pads, and they’re meant to hold a lot of fluid
•Cornstarch baby powder can be a godsend, especially if you’re worried about the quite unpleasant “period smell” that we with uteruses seem to always notice when no one else does. It also helps with that feeling of being in a puddle all the time (at least for me). If you don’t have cornstarch baby powder, regular (non-expired) cornstarch works for the puddle too, use it the same way, but as it’s unscented it won’t do much about the smell. Use whicever you prefer. Just please no baby powder with talc, it’s not good for female reproductive organs.
•Consider trying a menstrual cup. If you get it in right, it’s so good it’s like you’re not even on your period (except for a little bit of spotting from any blood on the walls below where the cup sealed in place), and you shouldn’t really feel it once you adjust to having it in. They’re like tampons without the risk of TSS (toxic shock syndrome). These can be amazing for you transmen out there who still get periods! They can last for up to five years if you take care of them right! I’ve bought them through both Amazon and Wish (always get a verified one if you buy from Wish) and they’re just as good as the super expensive Diva Cups.
•Also, if you try a mentrual cup, I recommend getting some vinyl or nitrile exam gloves to use when taking it out and putting it in if you don’t want the blood on your fingers/hand. Yuck. Baby powder and mentrual cups don’t mix well though, you don’t want that stuff getting all up in you when dealing with your cup. Not fun.
•For cramps, consider getting one of those heat/cold pack wraps. I just got this one from Walmart (if you’re seeing this post from a screenshot, just type in this link in whatever browser link you’re using: https://tinyurl.com/thermipaqclaywrap), and it’s in the freezer getting cold right now. I tried a non-clay one of these before and they’re AMAZING, especially if you have to leave the house for a bit while cramping. It stayed cold for a few hours! Try cold and heat, see what helps your cramps best. I personally have to alternate between the two at random because my cramps are fickle and sometimes will only ease with heat, other times only with cold.
•Some dark chocolate is your best friend. The darkest you can stand. It can help with PMS, and who doesn’t like to indulge in a little chocolate when they’re feeling bad? I eat two squares of a Ghirideli 72% caoco bar per day when I’m on my period, and it does help keep my mood swings under better control.
Of course, this is stuff that works for me, and may not work for everyone. But they’re worth trying if you’re interested in something new, or if you’re tring to make your period more comfortable to deal with for whatever reason.
