Whumptober day 14: Die a Hero or Live Long Enough to Become a Villian
Fandom: Encanto
Prompts;
Desperate measures
Failed escape
"I'll be right behind you"
Encanto, by a non spanish speaker, who wants some angst... we'll try it.
Mirabel watches her family celebrate, take a picture to commemorate the occasion, while she stands on the sides, forgotten and ignored. It doesnt matter, shes only in like one photo anyway, and Antonio looks happy. Thats all that matters, she doesnt m...
She leaves the room, finds herself on one of the balconies, with only Casita as company. She stares out into the mostly empty town, wishing on nothing to be special like her family, to be considered family at all even.
The railing beneath her arms cracks, the wood snapping into her arm and drawing a thin line there, she flinches backwards, staring with wide eyes before another noise catches her attention. The crack goes all through town, and the mountains guarding their villiage, are split.
Shes racing inside as fast as she can.
"Dolores, please if you can hear me you must have heard that! The mountains, they've cracked!"
She does not go in yelling, she knows she cant cause a panic yet, there are children here after all, and elderly. She needs to talk to her Abuela without scaring anyone. Dolores thankfully, has pulled her aside and they look up at her approach.
"I saw it," she whispers, as the three smile and make their way out of the room. "It goes through town, all the way to the mountains. Casitas railing too..."
Its all there when they arrive at the balcony, and Mirabel is thankful shes not going crazy yet. Abuela takes it in with horror filled eyes, Dolores looking almost numb behind her.
"We... must warn the people. Our Encanto has been broken... its only a matter of time."
"But why is this happening Abuela?" Dolores' voice is soft, her eyes drawn to the candle in the window.
"I do not know. But we will keep the miracle strong, we will protect our people. Get the others, I will address the town." Abuela hasnt looked at Mirabel once, but shes not surprised.
They watch her walk off, and Dolores finally shows fear in her eyes.
"The miracle is dying, if the Encanto is breaking." She says simply.
Mirabel is hesitant as she places a hand softly on her cousins arm,
"The miracle is in you all, have faith in the family Prima, and we'll make it through this."
The eye contact after is intense for someone who is used to being avoided. But Dolores puts a hand on Mirabels shoulder and squeezes,
"Help me get everyone?" She asks, and it has to be the first time someones asked for her help in... forever.
"Of course."
...
The town is on fire.
People are screaming and the town is on fire.
The candle flickers, a hand covers the flame- glowing and see through- Abuelo stands there, watching with worried eyes that jump to meet your own.
'Save them.' He mouths the words but they seem to echo around you.
Everything flickers, then burns, you burn-
Mirabel wakes with a gasp and coughs as smoke fills her lungs. Its a thin layer, coming in from the open window, she rushes over to find the forest near the cracked mountains burning.
"Casita! I know your hurting, but please wake everyone up! We have to get the town to safety, now!"
The windows shutters and tiles flap and Mirabel gets the basic message, the adults arent here.
"Miercoles..." she mutters, throwing on her closes and slinging the small pack shed done up after Antonios birthday a few days ago over her shoulder.
Shes banging on doors as she passes them, rushing into Antonios and slinging his pack over her other shoulder.
"Antonio, Parce! Its time to go!"
The jaguar leaps from somewhere in the trees, a groggy five year old on his back. The other animals had already left, Parce refusing, he would come in handy though, getting Antonio to safety quickly.
"Mira... rats say theres an Tio in the walls." The boy mumbles, "you'll save him too right?"
She doesnt quite know what that means, a rat Tio? Or... a random Tio? Is this Tio alive?
"I'm sure the other rats got him out already Tonito."
"Notta rat... Bruno." The boys a little more awake now, "Tio Bruno. You'll save him too right Mira?"
Tio Bruno... was in the walls...
"Alright Tonito, I'll get Tio Bruno."
"I'll come too." He rubs at his eyes, alert now it seems.
"No, you need to go with the others. I'll be right behind you." She places his bag in his arms and looks to Parce, "Get him to safety."
The leapord almost seems to nod, before taking off. Mira looks to Casita's cieling,
"Is there a man living in your walls?"
The house is almost bashful as the tiles seem to nod and point towards a painting. Of course, the only being that seemed to like her, and the Casita still hid something like this from her. She sighs before making her way over,
"Alright, help everyone else. I'll get the forbidden Tio."
...
They had told the town at the party. Everyone had gone home to pack their essentials and be prepared for a long hike over the opposite mountains. It was hard to convince everyone, so many that didnt want to run again, so many that felt they couldnt. But they had to try. They would not be slaughtered, not willingly.
Mirabel hadnt been part of the planning much, but then, none of the kids really had. Even Isabella and Luisa were mostly out of the loop, only Dolores able to give updates when they sat in Casita while the adults were in town. It was the most time she'd spent with her sisters and cousins in a very long time.
Mirabel may not feel like shes part of the family anymore, and that it took a disaster to bring them together- even just a little- but she wishes with all her heart, that they all make it out of this.
Even if she practically has to force her Tio into Dolores' waiting arms. The man had given a ramble of why he had to stay in the walls before he would listen to Mirabels explanation of "the town is on fire get out." She didnt know what prophecy he was talking about, or why he was sorry to her, but she could assume somehow, this had to be her fault. Because it always was right?
"Hurry after the others! I gotta get one more thing!" She tells her Prima, who gives a skeptical look, but at the cracking of the walls nods and hurries off.
It stings a little, how quickly she left her alone, but it didnt matter. She wanted them to be safe anyway. They were the miracle, with or without their gifts, and they needed to survive.
The house shakes again, cracking and breaking as fire dances outside the window.
"Casita, get me to the candle, please."
She hadnt really paid attention to it before, had kinda assumed it was her loneliness, but every piece that falls beneath her hands as she climbs her way to the window, almost feels like a hand. Her dream comes back to her and she glances at Abuelos picture, wonders if the dream was a warning from him, from... Casita.
She should have known really. A miracle born of the sacrifice Abuelo made, his love for his family... the Casita falls apart around her as it- no he- works to lift her to the candle. She doesnt know why the miracle is dying, if its her fault or the invaders or... she has the candle in her grasp, hears shouts from outside the house, Casita falls, and she with it, she shields the candle as her world comes crashing down.
...
Julieta is pulled away from the rubble, the invaders burning the town below as the people run. They dont have time to look for her daughter, her baby, the only one still inside according to Dolores, trying to save that damn candle. Because she was told it was important, apparently more important than her life. The Casita had pushed Dolores out when shed come back for Mirabel, had watched helplessly as the building crumbled on top of the 15 year old.
She pleads with Julieta, that she didnt know Mirabel was getting the candle. That she just wanted to get Tio Bruno out, then she was coming right back for Mirabel. And it was another relevation, that Mirabel had gotten everyone out, including the brother she thought long gone, and stayed for that damn candle. She holds her niece close as they make their way up the mountain.
...
Its dark, dusty.
She thinks there may be pain, but everything seems so far away.
A light, a hand brushing the hair from her face,
"Save them"
Warmth bursts within her, it does not bring joy, but a raging inferno as anger bursts inside of her, its all she can feel, all she cwn process. Anger at the rubble around her, anger at the ones who dared invade their encanto, anger and everything and nothing and suddenly words are too much and all she knows is the fire burning inside and out.
...
Their powers had flickered, too much and not enough and then seemed to vanish completely with the fall of the house. In the choas it didnt much matter- or rather they couldnt pause to think about it- but now surrounded and split off from the other villagers, with no powers to support them and the grief of loss deep seated, it hangs on their shoulders heavily.
Felix and Agustin shield the others as best they can, Bruno a barrier infront of the children as best he can be, Julieta and Pepa at either of his shoulders and Abuela trying to talk the invaders down. The hopelessness of the situation is palpable, the desperation in Abuelas voice as she begs for the children to be freed.
It seems to happen in slow motion, as flames burst higher, debri flying high into the early morning sky, as the ruins of their Casita explode in a fiery haze. The shade of these flames are lighter than those around it, at its center something moves that they cant quite see, but flames are quick to feed off the invaders still in the village. The men surrounding them shift uneasily, attention split between the Madrigals and the destruction below.
Its a surprise to everyone when the strange fire seems to jump, making its way quickly towards their position, and leaving only the faintest scorches behind. Burning nothing but invaders.
As it draws closer they see a glowing figure within the flame, golden and with intricate- familiar- designs swirling across their body. Familair curls seem to float with the flickering fire, and light shines off emerald frames.
Mirabel is within the fire once isolated on a wick, surrounded by the silhouette of a man long dead but honored.
Stood in shock perhaps, the men are quickly burnt to dust, though not a lick of the flame touches the Madrigals. Bruno is gaping at his niece, a vision long kept silent at the forefront of his mind, one that now made sense. Just as she could save them, they would need to save her before they all lost.
The invaders are smoking piles of ash, the people of the Encanto hidden as far as they could get. The fire around Mirabel does not go out, but it does shrink, the fires in the town already dwindling out. She stands amongst unbothered trees, a few feet from the gathered Madrigals, unmoving. They can barely tell if she even breaths, but they can now see numerous injuries littering her dusty body.
Julieta has tears streaming down her face, and Bruno hesitantly touches her shoulder,
"Shes alive Jules, she saved us, now we have to save her." Maybe the family will finally realize, the real gift isnt power, its eachother.

--"Replaced Miracle AU"--🐆✨🕯️
An Encanto au where Antonio is now the protagonist without a gift, Mirabel is the outcast who left casita at the age of 15, and after Alma's death, Pepa was the new matriarch, but things didn't go well after that.

This marks my 1,000 post.
Thank you to everyone for the likes, reblogs, comments and asks!
In honour, you can have a sketch (at the very end) and a wip from the Reincarnation AU; Mirabel’s death.
Warning, sensitive topics below, especially blood/injury and death.
~~~~~~~
Am I Too Late For a Miracle?
“What is going on!?”
At the sound of Abuela’s approaching voice, Mirabel and Isabela stop talking, quickly standing up.
“Abuela, it’s okay,” Mirabel tries gently. “Everything is okay—”
“What are you talking about? Look at our home! Look at your sister!” She gestures sympathetically to Isabela and the surrounding mess. “It wasn’t enough that you ruined her proposal, now you have to do this too—”
“Please, listen, I-I didn’t. Isabela wasn’t happy…”
Mirabel turned to her side, where Isabela no longer was. Her sister had wandered off behind Abuela, towards where their parents and Luisa had appeared.
At the other side of the room, Tía Pepa, Tío Félix, Dolores and Camilo have also walked in on the scene.
All of them staring her down.
“I don’t want to hear another word from you.” Her gaze hardened.
“Abuela, you don’t understand, the vision—”
“You have to stop, Mirabel! The cracks started with you; Bruno left because of you; Luisa’s losing her powers, Isabela’s out of control because of you! I don’t know why you weren’t given a gift, but it is not an excuse to hurt this family!”
Cracks emerged around the pair, though neither seemed to pick up on it in the moment.
Mirabel’s heart broke.
She opens her mouth but is silenced immediately by a hand in front of her.
“I’m sorry,” she whimpers. “I didn’t want to hurt us—”
“Enough!” Abuela thunders. “You don’t get to cry about what you’ve done. There isn’t a punishment worthy. How dare you speak to me about our miracle! How dare you hurt this family! How dare you break our home! How dare you try to harm our miracle! Let me tell you, young lady, I regret the day you were born. You have brought nothing but misfortune at every opportunity! I never would have kept you here if I’d known what a burden you were going to be! You are a disappointment. You have always been such a disappointment. A pathetic excuse for a Madrigal, a granddaughter, daughter, sister and whatever else is in your never ending list of failures. You don’t deserve to be in this family.”
The floor between them cracks, separating them. Abuela silently gasps in surprise and confusion, eyes glued to the damage; Mirabel flinches back, one hand at her heart and the other covering her mouth to prevent any fearful screams getting out.
“No, no, no!” Pepa suddenly cries.
Félix follows her gaze. “The candle!”
As if on cue, the cracks spread. One in particular splitting the house in half and knocking the candle off its perch, the candle flickers and the building shakes subsequently.
Dolores grabs onto the wall to steady herself and Camilo, firmly held by the ruana in her other hand. Isabela lurches forward to keep Abuela in her feet. Pepa almost falls into Félix. Luisa, barely fazed, secures Julieta and Agustín with either hand.
Mirabel, who had been knocked to the floor, shakes her head and recovers herself, setting her eyes on the candle.
“Casita, help me up there!”
The house tears off a line of railing, flipping it into a makeshift ladder for her.
Meanwhile, Camilo had taken the back staircase and was sprinting along the corridor towards Abuela’s door. Using his shapeshifting abilities to parkour through any suppose obstacles.
Isabela creates herself a vine to swing from and pull herself to the candle. Just as she gets close to the ledge, her door fades. The vine quickly dissipates into nothing.
She screams. Casita uses its beams to catch her, gently dropping her to the floor.
Camilo’s door flickers out next. He was mid-jump as the notably tall Josè and just as his hand goes for the edge of the roof, he shifts back to himself and misses. Casita’s other line of railing bends outwards for him to grasp on, breaking his falls as he lands beside Isabela.
He stares in horror at his own hands, his older cousin looks similar as the plants around them shrivel quickly and die.
Nearby, Antonio is stood frozen, watching as his own door goes out. It is immediately thrown off its hinges as the animals come bursting out, running and flying away into the wilderness.
“Careful! Antonio!” Félix remarks, quickly scooping the boy up. As his door comes crashing down to where he was just standing. With the boy in his arms, Félix makes for the exit. “We have to get out of here!” He throws over his shoulder to Julieta, Agustín and Pepa, who are doing everything but that.
“Mirabel?!” Julieta shouts.
Just as she tries to go after her daughter, Casita ripples it’s tiles in powerful waves forcing them out.
“Mirabel!” She cries again, almost tripping to step over Casita.
“Mirabel! You have to get out!” Agustín yells.
“Mirabel—”
The family is thrown out front door at that point. Luisa manages to break Abuela’s fall, Félix does the same for Antonio.
Bruno races on the inside of the walls that are crumbling and piling with dust, quickly shoving every rat inside his ruana. He retrieves Hernando’s bucket, slams it onto his head and crashes head first through the walls.
He tumbles out into the grass below, lifting the bucket as he eyes everything in disbelief. It’s been so long since he’s seen the outside; who would have thought it would be like this?
“Mirabel?!” Julieta cries in alarm, reaching out over Abuela’s shoulder. Casita hasn’t thrown her out. She’s still there. Struggling on her short legs to reach the candle. “Mirabel! Leave it!”
“Mirabel! The house is going to fall!” Félix hollers up.
Pepa twists anxiously at her braid. “Mirabel! Get out!”
“Mirabel!” Agustín shouts.
Casita shifts its tiles and Mirabel finally grasps the candle, panting in relief. Just as she dusts it over, the walls come crushing down around her.
The roof jolts downwards without warning, sending Mirabel hastily over its edge. She cries out. The stairs rise, sliding her onto the ground.
She sits up, eyes going wide as the building caves in. She closes her eyes, adjusts herself to lean over the candle, cradling it like something fragile in her lap. Various pieces of furniture stack themselves protectively around her, trying to shield her from the incoming attack.
“Thank you, Casita.”
~~~~~~
Dolores wailed in agony outside.
Her gift, unfortunately, seemed to be one of the last to fade.
She gripped her own ears tightly, nails digging into the skin, almost determined to rip them off. Over the top of her own hands were Isabela’s and Luisa’s, both her cousins looking at her with such concern.
Abuela was still stood frozen, Julieta and Agustín hovering beside her. Her father was off to the side comforting Antonio with help from Camilo. Her mother was partially sidetracked by something, no someone, in the distance. Townspeople were starting to gather further behind them all.
“Mirabel?!” Julieta cries in alarm, reaching out over Abuela’s shoulder. “Mirabel! Leave it!”
“Mirabel! The house is going to fall!” Félix hollers up.
Pepa twists anxiously at her braid. “Mirabel! Get out!”
“Mirabel!” Agustín shouts.
And Dolores just had to hear it.
Each item, each beam, each tile hit the floor and shatter, one after the other. Mirabel’s cries of absolute terror. It’s clearly her voice, but it sounds nothing like her. All haunting and broken. Dolores thinks she hears Mirabel calm, both realising Casita has sheltered her, and they whisper, “Thank you, Casita.”
And then there’s the deafening cracks as Bruno’s tower comes loose.
It falls.
And falls.
And takes Mirabel’s head down with it.
Dolores heard her splutter on her own blood and air. Her body coming to a silent and abrupt halt. Wherever it lands, Mirabel’s head is still alive. Her glasses smash on impact and cut into her cheeks. She hears the eyelids flutter open and the lips move, trying to scream, no doubt at the sight of her own headless corpse. But she doesn’t have her vocal cords to do that. The eyes blink again, straining to look away. Then nothing.
Casita breaks.
There’s a ringing in Dolores’ ears, in everyone’s ears, when Casita is completely gone and everything is still.
Two doors that had been sheltering Mirabel’s body fall apart, one squeaks open and shut one final time, as if saying you’re welcome. As if the house didn’t just let Mirabel die.
She covers her mouth and drops to the grass. Isabela being the only thing keeping her upright - Luisa had already walked off to her father.
“Shush, it’s okay, I’ve got you. Lola, I’ve got you,” Isabela whispers, holding her against her.
It’s been ages since she and Isa have been this close.
In spite of herself, Dolores can’t help but take the opportunity and tightens herself around Isabela.
Julieta pushes Abuela aside, running into the building. “Mirabel!” She calls, searching the debris.
“Everyone okay?” Agustín asks around. “Is everyone okay?”
“How could this happen?” Luisa questions nobody in particular.
Félix shakes his head in disbelief. “The Encanto is broken…”
“What do we do now?”
“My powers… they’re gone.” Camilo sulks. “And what about Antonio? What’s he going to do?”
Isabela taps her shoulder. “Dolores? Are you okay? Can you hear me? You aren’t listening to me.”
Dolores looks stunned.
She realises.
“My gift,” she mumbles. “Our gifts. They aren’t gone. I can still…”
She can’t bring herself to finish.
Isabela looks unconvinced, but doesn’t say anything. Though she does wave her hand half-heartedly, only for a cactus to suddenly pop out from the ground beside them.
“Mirabel!” Julieta cries in relief, finally spotting the familiar teal among everything. She races over, checking the girl bottom to top for injuries, as she always does; Dolores didn’t need her hearing for that, her Tía always does that. She tries to imagine what Julieta sees. The embroidery must be snagged and torn, the candle must still be glowing in her hands, she’ll be covered in dust and blood— and then Julieta screams.
Dolores figures she worked it out.
“Julieta, come quick!” Her mother calls in the distance, pointing at Bruno, who is not so-subtly hiding in the grass. “Julieta!”
The healer just collapses in front of the body, shrieking in anguish, reaching out but can’t bring herself to touch Mirabel’s severed neck or anywhere else.

Encanto au discussion
Ok, I've started to realize that people are forgetting/ don’t really know what AU’s are. I’m speaking to the Encanto fandom specifically. So, yes, I know AU’s where Alma, the blue couple, yellow couple, and/or Isabela are evil/mean to Mirabel are not liked.
Mamabel au’s aren’t liked because these types of au’s usually bash Felix and Pepa for being bad parents (which they aren’t). Au’s where Alma is just an evil person or Isabela is a b*tch to Mirabel aren’t liked because everyone knows Alma and Isabela as characters are complex people who had issues of their own.
But I think people fail to understand that these fics/ideas have AU attached to them. ALTERNATE UNIVERSE. The characters are literally changed to fit a new story to the writer's liking. I’m sure every Encanto writer understands that the madrigals (the gifted ones specifically) are complex people.
Alma lost her husband to a brutal death and the miracle came about right after. It’s obvious she thought the magic had to be earned in order for it to stay. She just took the idea too far and pressured her children a little too much.
Everybody understands that Pepa and Felix would NEVER leave a newborn baby to a ten year old. The very idea would seem absurd to them. Mirabel obviously is like an older sister than a mother to Antonio. Julieta and Agustin would never neglect their daughters nor would Pepa and Felix neglect their children.
Isabela NEVER bullied/abused Mirabel in any sense of those words. It’s just their relationship dwindled over the years. But you can obviously see they had a loving sister dynamic, even if they didn’t like each other at the moment.
But these characters…are characters. They aren’t real.  They are 3D MODEL RIGS given a personality to fit a role in a movie! If someone wants to change them to write a new story they certainly have the right to.
But I am NOT talking to proshippers, all of you can f*ck off, die, and live in the fiery pits of hell for an eternity.
So please, don’t get butt hurt when your favorite character is changed in an au/fanfiction. It’s just writing, it’s not gonna hurt you whatsoever, just scroll on. And certainly, don’t leave comments on the fics saying that (insert Madrigal here) isn’t like that, or “they would never do that”, etc.
We KNOW Mirabel isn’t a teenage mother, we KNOW Alma/Isabela isn’t a monster, we KNOW the blue and yellow couple are good parents. But you do understand that terrible family members do exist in real life…correct?
I’ve seen multiple REAL LIFE stories where teenagers were forced to raise their siblings. Multiple stories where parents/grandparents are really f*cked up people. Multiple stories where siblings weren’t the best people.
Don’t you think people who had f*cked up family members read these fics and feel a little represented when they read that kind of au?
Exhibit A:
Tumblr media
(This comment was on my pequeno soldado fic)
So, just because an au doesn't speak to YOU personally doesn't mean it doesn't speak to others. Don't hate on it either, just scroll on.
Thanks for reading ted talk/rant!

I’ve been rewatching Puss in boots the last wish and it gave me an idea. Death the wolf raising 5yr old Mirabel not long after her failed gift ceremony.
Cue canon events in the last wish with Death checking up on Mirabel off screen and the kicker she’s a huge fan of the legendary Puss In Boots and 1) Death he’s seriously about getting that autograph on the wanted poster for his little starlight, 2.) Humbling the feline to appreciate his last life and so that Mirabel will stop giving him heart attacks because of Puss influence on his kid.
YOOOO THATS SO COOL
But with how busy death is. I imagine he’s more like a cool uncle 🌚
He pulled up to Puss genuinely trying to get an autograph, but scared the mf off before he could 😮‍💨 his main mission is kill Puss/humbling him, but he is also trying to get an autograph. Every time he gets close, Puss runs off. He needs to get Puss to chill out for Mirabel’s safety 💀💀
Reminds me of an idea I had for a last wish au 🤕

I am ✨bored✨ here are some of my Encanto AUs
NEXT GEN AU
Self-explanatory: A next generation AU set about two decades past the events of the film. At this point, the family has settled down. Mirabel is now the fearless matriarch of the family, as Alma wanted someone young to take her place. Isabela and Luisa have both moved out, the ladder starting a family with a woman she loves. Dolores and Camilo are both married to people they deeply love with kids, and Antonio is extremely desperate to leave the Encanto. A crack in mountain has been left open for two decades, and it’s driving him nuts with curiosity— he believes there’s more out there in the world for him then the Encanto, and wishes to study at a real school and learn more then what their outdated books tell them.
Luisa’s family:
Wife: Valeria
Kids: Benson, Gaberial
Dolores Family:
Husband: Mariano
Kids: Issac, Paloma, Eloísa
Camilo family:
Former husband: Hugo
Current husband: Marco
Kids: Cyrus, Carolina, Chris and Celeste (yes they all have ‘C’ names and yes its all Camilo’s fault)
Behind the Magic
A very grandkid centric AU. The grandkids wake up separated from each other in a, vast magical land called “Planta”. They quickly discover that the continent is split between multiple countries which are all home to magic users like them. There is one issue: all the countries and segregated and by no means will make any kind of alliance. Some of the countries are at the very least peaceful, others are at war, and some have turned to myths and disappeared entirely. A prophet from the “Kingdom of The Future” (a faction of people with the same future seeing gift as Bruno) tells them that they must end the incoming war between the countries and bring the lost back in order to be whole again, only then they will be granted entry back into their world. The grandkids find themselves at a cross road when they begin siding with enemies and turning on each other, risking not just their way home but the place they’ve been sent to.
SEPARATED AU
Upon Casitas fall, all of the grandkids expect for Mirabel and Antonio split up and leave the Encanto. Isabela is now studying botany at university in a more populated part of Colombia. Dolores writes poems and dreams of a better life from a small village she found. Luisa has started a family and is now a mother told two kids, and Camilo’s face is now on nearly every bill board and in every record store. But when Alma suddenly falls extremely ill, Mirabel and Antonio set out to find their lost family and reunite before her death.
Pokémon AU
Yeah…. Pokemon.
Modern AU
This one only exists so I could write a fanfic of them going to Disneyworld
Puss in Boots
I’m scared to explain this one

in the spirit of the season (mutuals posting about their encanto aus) i wanted to post about mine bc i love them and am not active enough on here and wanna change that bc sharing my stuff is fun! so without further ado here they are lol
next gen au
pretty self explanatory. the story outlines what all the madrigals (mostly the grandkids) are up to in the years following the movie. mirabel gradually takes on more of a leadership role as time passes and eventually becomes the matriarch after alma's death and with enough time to prepare for the role. under her leadership, the madrigals are less shoehorned into roles and are encouraged to express themselves more freely, but being the leader still isn't easy and things still aren't perfect - while alma is still alive, mirabel often finds herself going to her for advice and repairing their bond further in the process. she also gets a gf (lorena), i've been playing around with the idea of her being an outsider that finds her way into the encanto but i would have to flesh that plot out a little more before i make it official. dolores eventually marries mariano, but only on her terms - she realizes quickly after the movie that though she loves mariano, she wants to take things slow, and mariano is more than happy to respect that. he puts in a lot of effort to understand how her gift works and help her out with it whenever he can, and for once, she feels like the one being heard. isabela, now free of her old role as the golden child, begins to let her more adventurous side out, exploring the outskirts and forests of the encanto to observe the plant life. she hones her gift and is able to bring even more exotic plant species to the encanto and starts up a very successful garden. she also ends up marrying two village women - lilli and rosa - and the three of them adopt a daughter, jacinda, together and spoil her rotten. lilli runs a flower shop and isa helps her out immensely with this. luisa finally learns to take it easy, prioritizing rest and relaxation after so many years of working hard to serve the community - though she definitely still loves to lift and hang out with the donkeys in her spare time bc old habits die hard. she probably takes over the care and raising of the donkeys as a whole bc they love her. she marries a village woman, inés, and they adopt two daughters, valentina and ciela. camilo is actually the first grandkid to settle down - he marries his childhood best friend and love of his life marco, and the two of them have six children together - amelia, imelda, brunito, ignacio, felipe, and sofia. they have their hands quite full with fatherhood but on top of that marco works as a teacher at the encanto's school while camilo continues to volunteer in the community, eventually becoming the drama director and soccer coach for the school. antonio grows up and starts his own animal sanctuary in the encanto that becomes wildly successful. he enlists dolores' help to scope out any injured or sick animals in the forests and nurses them back to health at the sanctuary, and he often accompanies isa on her trips to the forest to keep taxonomy records of the encanto's diverse wildlife. he never had much of an interest in romance - though plenty of people swoon over his kindness to the animals - but he is very fulfilled nonetheless and couldn't be happier helping take care of his animal friends. i have a more detailed timeline and bios for the kids that i'll be posting eventually but this is the main rundown of where the grandkids are at years down the line!

essentially follows the plot of the movie but the sides of the family swap roles. instead of alma, pedro is the head of the family. pepa has the gift of healing food and felix is her clumsy husband, camilo is the golden child with the wonderful floral gift, dolores is the middle child with the gift of super strength, and antonio is the baby of his side of the family, cursed to a giftless existence (and being the main character of the storyline). on the other side of the family, julieta's emotions control the weather while agustin keeps her calm, luisa is the eldest with the ability to hear a pin drop from miles away, isabela is the mischievous shapeshifting middle child, and mirabel is the youngest member of the family and gains the ability to speak with animals. bruno is still bruno.  did i make this au entirely to put camilo in pretty pink outfits and make him a mean annoying gay? maybe.
pirates
the warm color family is a fearsome and renowned pirate crew descended from the notorious husband-wife pirate duo alma and pedro madrigal (the latter is dead and the former has long since retired), with pepa as the captain and felix as the first mate. pepa was estranged from her mother and siblings in her youth as she attempted to learn more about her parents' past, and she soon set out on her own to live the pirate life that alma tried so hard to keep her children out of. in the meantime, julieta and her family form their own rival crew and set sail in search of pepa to take their vengeance. bruno tries his best to be a good mama's boy and stay home, but he is soon taken hostage by the fearless captain hernando, a legendary pirate who has feuded with both madrigal sisters and their crews for a while now. he grows rather fond of his bargaining chip over time and bruno eventually becomes the captain's lover and first mate. when the sisters finally put aside their squabbles and unite to save their brother from their enemy's clutches, it's a very awkward family reunion. also everyone has their gifts and uses them to help their crew in one way or another. eventually when the two sides of the family unite, the grandkids take up a ship of their own with mirabel as the new captain.
roommates
marco and camilo are college roommates with luca and alberto. that's literally it no linear plot just vibes. luca is a first year astronomy student, alberto is a second year student and undeclared, marco and camilo are third years and marco is majoring in education while being on the soccer team and camilo is majoring in theatre (🤢). alberto and camilo despise each other but also camilo is lowkey crushing. camilo and marco are already dating and alberto and luca are also definitely together but heavily in denial about it. they fight over dishes being left in the sink and decorate their dorm all cute
the fall
wrote a ten chapter fic about this one so read that if you wanna know what it entails but tl;dr au where the family never recovers after the fall of casita and they go their separate ways, with dolores camilo and isa fully moving out, their whereabouts unknown - until, ten years later, mirabel takes it upon herself to track them down, reunite the family once and for all, and save the miracle for real this time. will she succeed? what have the runaways all been up to over these past ten years? read it and find out i'm not telling you! also this fic/au is quite old compared to the others so no marco 😔 fly high king
mamma mia
the silliest dumbest most self indulgent au ever. camilo centric of course. the storyline is literally just mamma mia but with camilo. he has twin daughters and one of them (ima) is getting married and wants to invite her other biological father to the wedding - the only problem is she doesn't know who that is, and if camilo's old diary describing all his old hookups in detail is to be believed,  there's three possibilities - marco osma, dante velazquez, and nicolas sorelli (the latter two are ocs, i'll probably post their bios at some point lol also nicolas is trans so he's definitely not the other dad but he's stealth so he's just going along for the ride). she invites all three of them to her wedding and they reunite with camilo for the first time in twenty years. drama ensues. camilo marries marco at the end regardless of if he's the dad or not (but he probably is - they never find out for sure). isa is tanya (so lilli is pepper ofc) and mirabel is rosie (except she doesn't end up with one of the dads at the end bc she actually respects herself). ima's fiancées identity is yet to be determined bc i don't have a partner oc for her but i do know she's a lesbian so. gay greek weddings! camilo in overalls! love wins!
runaway camilo
this one is a rewrite of the canon plot to a degree but not really enough to be considered a full on au. plays with the scrapped concept of camilo looking completely different after the fall of casita that didn't make it into the final movie, which is like one of my favorite concepts ever especially because of how easily it plays into trans camilo. in this rewrite, camilo has basically used his gift to masculinize himself perpetually since his ceremony, which all but cures his dysphoria - that is, until casita falls, he loses the gift he had become dependent on, and it all blows up in his face. he's unrecognizable when the dust clears, and rather than be seen in such a state, he flees the scene and goes missing just around the same time as mirabel. the family is split as pepa and felix go looking for their son while the cool color family goes looking for mirabel, and both are found within a few days - camilo in the depths of the forest, skin scraped and clothes ragged from running into the forest with reckless abandon, practically digging his own grave and ready to give up for good. when he's found, it takes a LONG time for him to allow anyone to see him, much less recover from the trauma. the rewrite basically involves these events and the aftermath. luckily camilo does get his gift back when casita is rebuilt but the scars are forever and he probably still has nightmares about losing his gift well into adulthood and has to learn to become comfortable going without his gift for short bouts of time in order to get more comfortable lest the worst case scenario happens again! more or less a transmilo angst fest add-on to the main plot of the movie. mimi needs a hug 💔

Linked Universe Encanto AU Because I may not make animatics anymore but that doesn’t mean my brain doesnt vividly produce the ideas for them. AU notes under the Cut >> Edit: Adjusted skin colors cause they looked really weird once I saw them not on my tablet
Main Thing!!
 Is the Death haunting the family is Navi and Time is still the matriarch but is also still married to Malon. Malon is fine. Navi is the heavy death hanging over the joy of the family.
 Dark Link is Bruno. This actually took me a surprising amount of time to realize.
Everyone’s powers are swapped around so they don’t match the character they portray/whose parts they sing. For instance Wild is the super strength/stamina character but doesn’t sing Luisa’s parts cause Twilight acts as the “responsible sibling” taking on too much.
Gifts!
Wild: Super strength/stamina etc
Warriors: Teleportation
Twilight: Animal communication
Sky: Weather
Time: Prophecy
Four: Shrink (he still acts as the gossip since he takes Dolores’ place-- think fly on the wall status)
Hyrule: Healing (NOT with food tho lmao boy is banned from the kitchen.)
Legend: Make objects/create stuff from nothing for whatever you need.
Wind: Because he’s not the same reinccarnation as everyone and his story is about starting again anew he takes Mirabel’s place as Powerless <3)
 Dark Link: Shapeshifting :3c (Did he ever leave?)
Sky is engaged to Zelda but actually is head over heels. Time and Malon are married. Wild’s fiance Mipha died. Legend and Ravio are married. Four is still broken up because Shadow is stuck in the shadow realm.
I’d have drawn Twilight singing Surface Pressure but I ran out of room and my hand hurt >> uh.... I think that’s everything?

Tw: mentions of death, suicide mention, self-harm, child death,
Dolores’s heart thumped in her ears as she sat on her bed. Glad to finally put her earmuffs on...to blanket the noise of the Encanto from her ears, even beyond her bedroom doors, things still echoed through.
Though the sounds of her parents were just as loud as ever as they hovered, her mother’s cloud rumbled most of all with clear uncertainty which Dolores was already growing to hate. She didn’t like that directed at her because there was also disappointment. She could see it in her father’s eyes, even as he pulled out a few seats. It made her angry, more than anything and it felt odd...but right.
“Dolores…” he started, “you know that…there were rules in regards to Isabela. I’m not against her having male friends but… her sleeping with them is another story. Why didn’t you say something? If not to Abuela, you could have always come to us. We could have handled this more…appropriately.”
Dolores inhaled deeply. “I don’t make it a habit to listen out to two people having sex.” She spoke dryly, “Unless that’s something you want me to enlighten everyone about? Especially you adults.”
“Dolores, this is serious.” Her mother spoke firmly. “You know that’s not what we mean.”
“It was never my business, Ma.” Dolores shrugged, trying to keep calm but she could already feel the heat in her veins. “I won’t use my gift to gatekeep Isabela when everyone else used my gift for their demands. I’m absolutely sick of it.”
Felix’s hand came to his wife’s, almost holding her back. “Dolores, where is this coming from?”
“Where is th—“ Dolores paused, taking a shallow breath. “Why does that matter? Can’t you just punish me and leave me alone?”
“No.” Felix shook his head. “Because what this is is clearly more than just what’s happened with Isa.”
“Dolores, we’re your parents. We do want to look after you as well.” Her mother tried, but the flash of lightning was the dead giveaway. “it’ not fair to us if you keep keeping secrets.”
Dolores’s eyes welled up but she felt the heat rise straight up. “So now it’s not fair to keep secrets?” She whispered, “Because it’s not convenient for you? Do you have any idea what sort of hell I am exposed to every day because I just happen to have a large hearing range?” She jumped to her feet. “You don’t know the half the mess because you’ve always told me to keep it to myself and if I couldn’t, then I’m the liar for hearing something I’m not supposed to, or I’m the gossip or I’m someone who can’t keep a secret!”
Her father rose to his feet, “I’m sorry we’ve taught you that, Dolores.” He apologized sincerely. “I thought we were trying to help you cope with your gift.”
“You may have thought but all that did was give me a filter, Pa. I’ve kept so many secrets because I had to. The abusive families, the children that are left alone while parents go out for the night, the amount of times Camilo slips out of bed hungry to get a snack because the shapeshifts in his sleep, the years I had to live knowing Tio was in the walls when you all missed him, or the times Mirabel was crying in the nursery because she didn’t get her gift and Abuela’s prayers and so what, on top of all of that if Isa needs a break?” She seethed, her hands coming to press down on her ear muffs as she spoke. “The times I tried to tell you, you’ve brushed it all aside so I learned not to tell you as much.”
Her mother’s cloud turned dark with rain. “I’m sorry, Dolores.”
“And we’re not even touching on the fact that I’m hardly a popular girl either because of my gift. No one actually ever wants a conversation with me! They just need me for their own thing like finding out where someone is or what someone is doing or what someone’s plans for the day are. It never mattered what I wanted, or if I had something to say unless it was relaying information!” Dolores furiously wiped her eyes.
Her mother rose to her feet but Dolores shook her head at her mother’s attempts. She didn’t want that. She was too noisy. The rain was already tinkling too loudly.
“I…have tried so hard to do my part for the family. If anyone was in danger, then, of course, I would say because I don’t want to lose anyone, but shouldn’t I otherwise have a choice on how I use my gift?” She glowered through welled, burry eyes before squeezing them shut, the tears free raining down her cheeks.
She so desperately wanted to continue to rank and range… but the fire had waned in her heart and head and she was so tired. Tired of it all… but she had to hold onto a few things.
For a little while longer.
Dolores didn’t fight the sensation of her father’s arms, pulling her into a hug before he just found herself weeping into his shoulder.
  -
Vera was glad to see Ruben on the sofa, quietly crocheting with a thick ball of yarn and their granddaughter tucked into his side, covered in a blanket, and otherwise out to the world. The tea set was still on the table and a half-eaten plate of snacks as well.
“How is she?”
“Humiliated, but she’s calmer.” He paused his work, patting the girl softly on the back. “she went right asleep after she had the tea”
“I can see that.” Vera relaxed a little, coming to sit down on the spare chair. “I’ll talk to the blacksmiths soon to get a new lock.”
“New lock?” Ruben’s eyebrows pulled in.
“Luisa let Alma in after she saw Isa invite Mateo Marques in. Completely inappropriate but… while I took the key from her, I think it’s best we replace it as well and install another security latch? Door chain…or a simple latch.”
“I don’t want a full replacement.” Ruben answered, “Everyone’s getting prepared for Novenas and the blacksmiths already have a lot on their plate. A simple installation is fine and far cheaper.”
“Ruben…”
“It was not a robbery, and we know who has keys, Mi Vida.”
Vera glowered but… she didn’t want this to happen again. She could trust Mirabel with her set without a doubt along with Isa who actually needed them. Would it be wise to have Agustín’s key returned? She shot that thought down; it wasn’t like he had let her in either. At least, Vera hoped Luisa would learn from her actions now, what that key was is more than just a door key.
“What are you making?” Vera asked softly, eyeing now that he was making.
“A baby blanket.” He stated, “It’s a start, don’t you think?” He looked relatively proud of it, stretching out the indigo fabric across his lap, barely the side of a table mat. It was an intricate, shell pattern, but without any holes so little fingers wouldn’t get trapped. The main color was indigo but there was a roll of cream waiting on the side for later.
One of the few things Vera was familiar with was that Ruben was an expert in knitting, having learned it young and this was an easier form and… he was very fast. He had made each of his children and grandchildren their blankets and little socks as well. She was sure some were still in the boxes somewhere. Sock… picked apart from curious hands under the dark of night.
“it’s beautiful.” Vera smiled softly before it fell. “Did she mention anything of what happened?”
“Only that Luisa caught her and Mateo Marquez in bed mostly.”
“Anything about the baby?”
“Did Agustín or Alma mention the baby?”
“No.”
“Then…it’s likely she didn’t tell them.”
As Vera already suspected, which given what she had seen was for the best until the air had calmed. While she had said later to talk to her son, maybe a day would be prudent. They would have to tell the family about the baby sooner or later but…could they afford the time off?
“I’m going to the shop, if I can finish one of the dresses by the end of the day then I can rest easy tonight. If Agustín comes to the house, send him there.” She needed something to do but as long as Ruben was looking after Isa, then there was little she could do without being overbearing. Not to mention, with all the apprentices now working on their projects at home, then she’d have the privacy of her shop to talk if Agustín came.
“No new locks,” Ruben reminded as she rose to her feet again, earning a sour look back before she left.
 The trip back to her shop was quiet for her, passing through the busy streets though she had detoured to blacksmiths to place an order for a door chain. Vera had eyes a swing-bar latch but it was far more expensive—if anyone was going to break in then a window was far more convenient and Luisa would break through anything she’d put, so a door chain it was. Fortunately, with promises of finishing man’s youngest daughter’s quinceañera dress first, the blacksmith was quick to send his youngest son to see to the fitting on the door before the day was over.
Waiting on the front of her shot, Vera was surprised to see Mirabel sitting on the front steps, carefully embroidering, and didn’t look up until her shadow crossed her.
“Abuelita!” She looked up, jumping to her feet though almost falling off the step. “Sorry… I thought you were still open. I thought maybe you had to pop out for a bit so I waited. You don’t…close early on a Thursday?”
Vera smiled fondly at her, fished out her keys, and gently unlocked the door. “Something came up. Have you been home recently?”
“No, when I saw the dark cloud, I thought something must have upset Tia but it lightened up a little so I figured Tio’s looking after her. Did something happen?”
Mirabel’s ignorance was…enjoyable, even as she locked the door after her and kept the sign ‘closed’ facing the rest of the town and led Mirabel out back and offered her to get set up.
“Si, it involves Luisa and your Abuela.” Vera wasn’t for gossip, not truly, “you’ll hear about it later no doubt. Hopefully, Luisa will learn from today.” She pulled out the bright red quinceañera dress and helpfully, Mirabel helped her place it onto the mannequin. The crinoline dress was separate and complete so that was left as it was and the dress itself was all sewn together. Vera just needed to finish the decorations and make sure the lace was not at risk of being caught.
“Can I ask what it’s about?” Mirabel questioned, getting back to her sewing.
Vera sighed softly. “Luisa let your Abuela into my home to catch Isa out on something.”
Mirabel almost slipped with her needle, her eyes widening. “Oh.”
“Oh indeed,” Vera shook her head. “I’ve taken your sister’s key from her and I’m waiting until it all calms down before I broker a conversation with your parents.”
“Is…is Isa alright?”
Vera hesitated, if for a moment. “She’s….shaken. I can’t imagine she’ll be open to trusting her family as much anymore.” Which was only the tip of the iceberg. “You might be the exception… and your high-listener cousin for that matter as well.”
Mirabel nodded slowly, a mixture of expressions crossing her face before she settled on with her sewing.
Silence relapsed between them and Vera got herself settled to gently sew the place properly into the corset. A last second redesign was a pain when the lower half was already completed and attached but Vera had taken up the challenge… not knowing that was going to bite her in the rear with external displays.
“Thank you for inviting me down earlier,” Mirabel spoke up after a few minutes.
“You’re always invited down here, Nieta.” Vera smiled warmly. “I’m glad you enjoyed yourself.”
“Hm..” Mirabel nodded, though her tone struck her as…off. A little.
This made Vera pause a little and spare her youngest granddaughter with a look. “Is everything okay?”
“It was nice to talk to Isabela.” Mirabel shrugged, “I know...Isa avoids us and keeps busy… I don’t blame her for that. She’s not allowed to seek me out so I get that.”
Vera was aware of that rule, but she didn’t disprove of it entirely for Mirabel’s sake and she doubted Isa planned to break that given the girl did try to avoid Mirabel as well. Didn’t want to remind her, Isa had always said.
“But?” That question always seemed to hover in the subtext of her tone.
“I… I like that my family is looking out for me but… It’s hard trying to talk to Isa when…the family’s there.”
Vera set down her pin, making sure the lace was pinned back and moved to give her her full attention at the least. “What is it that frustrates you?”
Mirabel shrugged, “They don’t leave me along with her.” She too paused, “I…I get they don’t trust her being alone with me. I understand why but…I just want my sisters to be my sisters. Not an outcast or by a bodyguard.” She looked down into her lap. “I just…want things to go back to the way they were.”
Vera gently patted her leg, pulling her attention to her before pulling her into a soft half-hug.
“Nothing can go back to normal…but that doesn’t mean things are abnormal forever. You’ve come so far and I’m…glad that you’re feeling confident to seek Isa out on your terms.”
“I can’t forget what she did.” Mirabel admitted, “I just…” She shook her head, failing to find her word, her short hair falling from behind her ears to almost shield her face from her
“No one but you and Isabela has a true idea of what occurred that day, so I cannot try to understand how terrifying that must have been for you to go through.” Vera was honest because… this girl deserved to know that she wasn’t underselling the girl’s trauma. She was not there to truly know, but she could empathize. “Your feelings have value, as confusing as they are.”
Mirabel exhaled shallowly but her voice seemed to shake as if holding back a little tenseness. “Is it…bad that I feel guilty?”
Vera shook her head. “Where does the guilt come from?”
Mirabel cocked her head softly, glancing at her with confusion. “Hm?”
“The guilt, where does it come from? Does it come from being at the center of the…incident or what happened after? Or do you feel it coming from another experience?” Vera clarified.
Mirabel looked into her lap. “Both…I guess. I shouldn’t have…tried to tell Abuela…”
Vera tightened her grip on the girl though… she quickly tried to wrack her brain for a way to help… not hinder or diminish this. Mirabel had never talked so deep and let alone about that day…
“While…it may not have been your place to do that,” Vera carefully chose in her answer, “your intent was pure because you love your sister. You wanted what was best for her… you had no idea how she could have responded.” Her hand rubbed gentle circles. “and how she responded is not your fault.”
“But I still feel guilty! I hate that!” Mirabel grumbled, her hand coming to wipe her eyes from under her glasses. “Isabela tried so hard for Abuela and..i just took that all away from her!”
She didn’t stop the soft circles, even at the remarks though Mirabel sniffled almost angrily.
“You didn’t take anything from your sister,” Vera assured, despite the disbelieving glance. “How Alma acts is also not something you can control either. How she’s treating Isabela is her fault. Not yours. Setting up high standards and arranging marriages is her fault, not yours.”
Mirabel deflated a little. “It’s not Abuela’s fault.”
“How is it not Abuela’s fault?” Vera challenged softly, to try and get the girl to think a little more than to actually turn this into something else. “I don’t mean to disrespect Alma but she holds a weight to what happened, even if she does not see it. If she had not pushed for Isa’s relationship to progress more than she wanted to, there may not have been such an attack to occur that day.”
Mirabel remained quiet, but thankfully more thoughtful as she picked up her needle.
“I think Isabela also appreciates you visiting her. Perhaps, what you both need is closure. There’s no forgetting what’s been done, but that doesn’t mean you two can’t move on if you both try.” Vera kissed the side of her cheek softly and rose to her feet to get back to work.
  -
It took a few more hours before Vera had finally vanished the quinceañera dress and set both the dress and its crinoline to the pick-up section. Mirabel had gone home but looked in better spirits so Vera hoped her words had a positive impact. Ruben always said she’d be a good therapist but… she doubted she could cater to more than her family’s problems. She’d much rather help her family.
She was finishing double-checking her notes on her apprentices and what she had given for them to complete and who they were for before she heard the door. Only one other she was expecting had a key to the shop so she sighed softly out.
This talk.
“Back rooms, Agustín.” She called, moving her chairs to sit and leaving one open for her son who entered the rooms, looking just as troubled as she felt.
“Mama,” He started, “I’m sorry about Luisa and—“
Vera cut him off with a hand raise and then gestured for him to sit. She was already losing patience. She was getting too old for this bullshit to keep happening.
Agustín stared at her for a long moment though hesitantly complied. “Mama?”
“What happened today is one that I never expected to happen, especially from Luisa and I don’t care what reasoning in regards to Alma is, because that’s not relevant. I gave keys for emergencies or if we needed help but it never occurred to me that my own granddaughter who doesn’t even live with us would allow entry for another without our permission. I will handle that with Luisa, and Agustin. Not you. She will have to make amends for her actions, she will have to apologize to not only me and your father but also her sister.”
Agustín’s shoulders deflated. “She didn’t mean any harm.”
“No? Then why did Isa almost have a panic attack?”
“Ma, she—“
“I don’t care what Isabela did. Agustín.” Vera snapped. “What Isa did was in the privacy of her own room, in another home. I was not unaware and to be blunt, it’s not Luisa’s responsibility to oversee Isabela and tattle-tale to the one person who wants to control every aspect of Isa’s life. Luisa needs to take a step back from Isabela and what issues she has with her older sibling needs to be addressed.”
Agustín sucked in a heavy breath. “Ma… things haven’t been easy at Casita. I’m trying but it’s hard to balance it all.”
“You have a wife, don’t you?” Vera pressed, “she had as much reasonability in this as you as their mother. I’m surprised she’s not with you.”
At that, Agustín looked a little sourer, fiddling with the wide of his armrest. Familiar behavior he had when hiding something.
“Agustín, what happened between you and Julieta?”
Agustín ran a hand up through his hair. “She’s struggling…. More so than me and I’m trying to help…but it’s hard to balance our girls and Julieta along with everything else.” He admitted, “Juli…she’s got headaches, nightmares and… she’s… not entirely there, despite looking like it.”
Despite her annoyance at her daughter-in-law, she could feel her son’s concern to know he wasn’t lying. “Has she fallen into bad habits?”
Agustin hesitated but nodded. “She’s…taking a lot more painkillers than usual to deal with the pain and tiredness She’s…starting to drink a little more. I’ve...diluted her drinks down but… that’s barley helping. She won’t talk to me about it and just…worries constantly about Mirabel... I’ve not talked to our daughters about it. I can’t.”
Dependencies on alcohol and narcotics drugs, isolating and … clearly fixating on one thing and withdrawing on the others. Vera would have liked to have happily tried to believe that Julieta had simply failed as a mother but it was more than that.
Unfortunately.
“Why don’t you talk to Dr Lopez tomorrow and see if you can get her seen or to find ways to help medicate her out of the more worrying habits like the painkillers and alcohol.” Vera suggested, “If nothing is diagnosed as wrong, then it’s a different conversation and we can talk on that. I will give her the benefit of the doubt until then.”
“But I’m not out of the woods?” He scoffed. “Why am I getting lectured?”
“Because I raised you to care for all your children equally. Not care for two with love and affection and leave the last one out in the cold when things get hard.” Vera’s anger returned. “You should have done more to help because Isabela is just as damaged by what happened.”
“Mama,” Agustín jumped to his feet. “I tried! But you can’t forget what happened. Isabela almost killed Mirabel!”
“No one’s forgotten that, Mijo!” Vera snapped, glaring him down. “No one is ever letting that go. People like to hold that face and throw it in her face at every moment she inconvenienced them. She knows she did. She knows she hurt and caused pain and almost killed her sister. She has to live with the guilt of knowing what she did. She didn’t start that day with malicious intent. She had no intention to hurt Mirabel… but she did. She has to live with that as well and she’s taken her dues respectably.” Vera took a heavy breath in. “she’s never tried to get out of her punishments that were handed to her because that was how she understood atonement of her sin. Not even with living with us. She broke one of them to cope with the emotional neglect that followed. Sex is not the worse that she could have done for emotional relief. She could have grown her own drugs if she wanted, made a leaf sharp as a blade to cut through her skin.”
Agustín at least has the decency to look away.
“Things could have easily gotten worse, Agustín. Without my support…without those who actually put more effort in, she could have died.” She stepped into Agustín’s line of sight. “A jump off her the top of her waterfall, poison, a hand-made noose of vines and none of any of this you can actually stop. Not with her gift.”
“Stop, Ma.”
“My point is, Agustín. Yes, Isa is not innocent. She knows this…but that doesn’t mean she deserves to suffer needlessly and endlessly. How can she get better when no one gives her the chance to do better? Don’t you see why Isa’s stopped trying with you and Julieta?” Vera reached forward her hand coming to his cheek. “You’re so worried about losing Mirabel, you’ll have lost Isabela.”
Agustín swallowed, his shoulders slumping. “I… I don’t want to lose any of my daughters.”
“I know you don’t. It terrifies me that I could have lost any of them. I lost one child, Agustín. That pain is…unimaginable.” Vera gave him a soft look. “I don’t want that for you but… now more than ever, Isabela needs you and Julieta.”
Agustín shook his head, “what good are we at this point?” he sunk slowly down, back into his chair “I’ve failed.”
Vera sighed, keeping her hand on him to offer some comfort. “Isa…” she hesitated. “Isa is…” The words felt hard to speak out, “Isa is carrying a child.”
Agustín’s head shot up, his face losing all color and his eyes widened. “What?”
“That was why she had company today, he may have been excited of such news he wanted to celebrate but….I can’t know how it went given what happened. I won’t allow the stress to kill that baby just like mine had killed Dante. Right now, she is on very thin ice of that possibility.” Vera sucked in deeply. “For the next few days, leave Isa to me and your father. Luisa is to see her to apologize only and that is it. Talk to Julieta about the child if you must, but not Alma. She clearly isn’t ready to know.” Vera finished, “Go home, calm down, and get your thoughts in order.”
There was little room for him to argue, but she had certainly felt better to hope progress could be made here.

1. Song: Oof tough choice. Let's go with Liar by the Arcadian Wild and Cold is the Night by the Oh Hellos
17. Thing I've learned while researching for a fic: So many things for TBTK. I know a lot about Chiribiquete now, the fall of the Incan Empire, when speaker phone was invented, the Colombian foster care system... I could go on.
24: moodboard for TBTK
Tumblr media
29: I've had the idea for a not-really-a-Papa Bruno AU because his kid would be an OC not Mirabel for a long time. This was the very rough just stream of consciousness, barely edited, first scene idea.
The sound of a horse racing up the main road was, while not unheard of, certainly enough of an anomaly that it caused a stir.
The horse and rider, a teenage girl that Julieta would later swear she mistook for her brother 25 years ago
Are you Julieta Madrigal she asked, the horse cantering to a stop
I am
"May I speak with you in private? I—" she glanced at the villagers all ogling them, "It's urgent."
The fear in the girls eyes convinced her.
Julieta led the girl into an alcove
I need you to come with me, my father, he's dying and I don't, tears, nothing but your gift will save him
Of course but forgive me I don't recognize you who is your father your family must live on the outskirts
She shook her head we live half a days ride from here outside the Encanto
Shock. Outside the Encanto? Nervous. How did you know about my gift? How did you enter the valley?
I know about your gift because my father told me. He said one bite of your food can be the difference between life and death please, it's been two days already
Who is your father?
The girl stammered and drew something from her bag, a letter. Oh right, right. My father is Bruno Madrigal.
She kept talking through her Tia's shock. He never told me about his family until yesterday. He gave me this letter to give to you. He wanted me to come here after he died. But I wasn't going to wait around for him to die when there's someone who can save him.
Begging now, I know you think he abandoned you but he didn't! It wasn't his choice to leave! He says it was in that and he probably stills thinks it was because he blames everything on himself but it wasn't his fault!  He didn’t say anything about my mother in that. At first I thought it was normal because he never talks about her but then I started reading his journal. He was so scared of coming back here I had to know why. She tricked him, she— she wasn’t a good person.

Hey, I love your replaced miracle au, what's the story? I wanna know why Mirabel left and how Pepa became the matriarch, as you'd think Julieta would be the new matriarch if something happened to Alma, are anyone else's roles or powers switched?
Oh I didn't know I got messages, sorry for the delay! 💦
First of all i appreciate a lot that you love this au! 🥺 And as for the story, it will be told with new posts regularly; Mirabel left to protect Antonio because she had a vision about casita breaking down and he was in the center of it, so in his ceremony she left to prevent Antonio from being shunned in the same way she was. (technically the roles have been swapped).
It is known that Julieta was the eldest and the one who should be in charge after Alma's death, but she ceded that position to her daughter Pepa because she saw her as more suitable to be the new authority, since unlike Julieta, who is a passive person and goes more for the emotional side, Pepa is rational, makes tough but fair decisions, and will follow the same steps as her mother regarding taking charge of the family, which means that the destiny of the Madrigals will remain on the same tragic path, and the miracle will die if they don´t fix the main problem before it's too late.
I think the fact that it is now Antonio who has to fix his relationship with his mother will make it more complicated and painful to watch because of the new terrain that will be explored too. (For example, the death of his father Felix)
And yep, all their roles/gifts will be switched, including 2 new characters :) Thank you for asking!

I got an au idea for you!
It’s not really got a name yet, I couldn’t think of one. But it’s about Bruno being the patriarch of the family and candleholder. You can decide whether or not he still has a gift. I wanna see more of Bruno in your aus!
I’m thinking maybe the gifts change as well, so there will be tons of angst for the kids. I want to see what the relationships would be like subsequently.
Mirabel: is probably the favourite and golden child here. If you don’t wanna change the gifts around, I was thinking you could give her the gift of creating jewels and diamonds. I’ve read a good fic about it and I like the idea a lot.
Camilo: is probably well liked to. He and Mirabel are probably like twins and get mistaken for Bruno’s children. Maybe he reminds the adults of what Bruno was like as a child before he became the patriarch.
Dolores: is probably very close with Bruno, his confidant maybe? She knows the truth about his struggles and trauma and is really sympathetic to him, defending him from some of the other members of the family.
Isabela and Luisa: I don’t really have much for these two, they are probably the least favourites and just kinda cast aside. Maybe one of them runs away and becomes this aus Bruno?
Julieta: would be very strained, not wanting to listen to her young brother as a leader. Maybe they opposes him at times?
Pepa: same as above.
I don’t know what the husbands or Antonio would be like.
I’m not sure who would be the giftless one either, maybe Lusia or something??
I’d like to see you’re interpretation of this.
I quite like the idea of Bruno becoming the patriarch/candle holder, actually. I think there’s a lot of potential behind it.
It is called Lost and Found AU. I’ll leave some of my thoughts for this below the cut, as it’s already a long post.
A bit of backstory: Alma passed and leaves the running of Encanto to Bruno, who had already been picked as candleholder slightly before her death, but she picked him for the running due to the typical beliefs at the time. I’m talking monarchies and how boys go first in the line of succession, you get the gist.
Mirabel is not going to be the favourite - there’s already enough AUs on here with her being the golden child. Girl can take a backseat here. She also has no connection to Camilo. They are cousins, they are two very different people and will maintain their usual dynamic.
I’ll save discussing the rest of the characters as a lot of that is largely dependent on what gifts they get.
Speaking of, I’m unsure how to handle the gifts. I do love a good gift swap, it’s a fun excuse to make art, but I’m not sure how much option I still have given my other AUs. If anyone has any suggestions on this, please feel free to comment below.

Encanto Addams Family Au
Tumblr media
First version:
Like say, alma's side of the family were distant relatives of the Addams? But regardless, the cooky gene is prominent in every relative.
So, let's say Pedro met Alma at a graveyard after a pet or relative died. They started visiting each other more often there and their love blossomed from there.
Pedro knew very well how the town saw her family; crazy, creepy, and a threat. But Pedro never saw her as any- well...he knew for sure she was all three of those things, but he also knew she had a heart of gold too (even though she never liked to admit it).
They both got married and the triplets came about. She and the rest of her family all lived in one house (like an early Casita before the Miracle).
The triplets grew up and got their gifts (Maybe gifts were already common in Alma's family and maybe she just didn't get one? Her family still loved her though). Julieta: poisonous food (but her family doesn't mind the poison). Bruno: foreseeing deaths and terrible fates. Pepa: Only storms, lightening, and rain.
So, they just end up like a combination of Wednesday and Pugsley. Alma and Pedro are purely Gomez and Morticia in the purest form.
Second version:
Pedro and Alma get married, have the triplets, and things seem fine for a little while. Until the other villagers decide that Alma's family weren't people anymore and decided to burn their house down.
One thing led to another, and Alma (with the babies) were the only ones to make it out alive. A miracle happened and a forest formed around her to protect her and her babies.
A new house came about, and things got started from there. Oh yeah, that day was the first and last time Alma Madrigal cried.
The triplets grew up never knowing about the outside world, until two boys came along. Those boys were Felix and Agustin, both were orphans who ran away from an orphanage at 16 and 17 years old.
They somehow made it to their house and Alma begrudgingly let them stay. A good way to give her kids someone to torture and "play" with. And that's how the grandkids came about, but both girls and both boys were above age of course.
(Also: Maybe the forest is an entity like Casita? It creates a labyrinth of pathways and dead ends just in case someone with ill intentions gets too close to the house. The forest saw that both boys needed help and decided to let them through.)
Isabela: Can only create poisonous plants
Isabela: super strength
Mirabel: Doesn't have a gift and is considered the "normy" of the family.
Dolores: Can hear from afar. You can say she went insane from hearing voices for so long.
Camilo: Shapeshifting
Antonio: Can talk to only dead animals
All children know there's an outside world but don't think it's best to go out there. Alma told the stories of the scary human beings who kill you for being slightly different.
Feel free to ask my any questions or give me ideas about either version.

Hi just wanted to talk about an Au idea I had
Story: Mirabel when she was 9 found a crack in the mountains of the encanto. She told her family she was going on a camping trip(which was not technically wrong). She explored the outside of the encanto, 5 days into her trip she found a kingdom full of magic and non magical people in harmony. The kingdom was run by 4 kings and 3 queens, their all siblings that rule over the kingdom. Over time Mirabel gets close to the rolers and they (not officially) adopted mirabel as their little sister, calling her princesa Mirabel. Mirabel had a personal guard and a room in the castle. Mirabel one day came to the kingdom after getting yelled at by Alma, Isabella and pepa all in one day. She asked to be alone in her room, her guard listened to her request and stayed outside her door. mirabel went out through her window to the garden. What she didn't know was that the kingdom was at war and a soldier from the opposite nation killed her in cold blood. The solder was found and killed. Mirabel's guard felt like he failed his job. The rolers were angry at the madrigal family so they made 9 stitched dolls of mirabel and gave them each a fraction of Mirabel's soul. The dolls were made as a test, if the madrigal family didn't change their ways after the 9th one was gone they would destroy the encanto and only spare the kids. They put doll one in Mirabel's bed and the next day someone that looked just like Mirabel was in the nursery at Casita. The rolers erased the clones memories of the kingdom and her death(the original mirabel). Over time the clones replaced each other as the others found out the truth or Mirabel (the idea) had to look older. Doll 9 (the Mirabel we follow in the movie) was exploring a little bit outside the encanto when she found a person unconscious outside of the encanto. After healing and the person woke up she explained she was a seamstress at the castle and about the original mirabel and what happened and how the rolers believes that the madrigal family lost their last chance to change and where planning an attack.
Side ideas: the original mirabel never got to meet Antonio, the clones that know the truth call the original mirabel "the original", the clones call echother by their numbers, the clones live in the kingdom when they're replaced in the encanto
The other 8 clones personalities:
Una: Una was the first, she lasted the longest at a 2 whole years, she acts a lot like Alma but she will Punch you if you say that to her face. She spends most her time at the originals grave. She looks more doll like now more than human.
Dos: is flirting, guys, girls she don't care. Her and Una are the best guards in the kingdom. She has a few cuts here and there but is in perfect condition.
Tres: she is a book lover and will stay in the library most of the time. She loves to write. She has short hair that looks like yarn.
Cuatro: she acts a lot like Luisa, the only thing that calms her down is sleeping. She has a button eye because she lost her original eye.
Cinco: she is cold, angry, tough and she will attack now and ask questions later. She is missing an arm.
Sesi: is calm, caring. She loves to sing and will often sing at bars in the kingdom. She has the longest hair out of the clones.
Siete: she is always pissed at something, she loves to explore and will have a book that she keeps of all her magical findings. She will always have sticks and leaves in her hair for some reason.
Ocho: she is very restful of the 9th clone because Ocho was replaced the day before Antonio's birthday/gift ceremony. She gets her emotions out by sewing. She is always quiet and gets along with Siete the most. She rerooted her hair teal with light blue highlights.
All: they all hate Alma with a burning passion and will always say it. They would say it to her face to. They don't understand how the 9th can just forget alma
It is actually wild how they don’t see the clones, like ow??? Do you miss something like that, it is genuinely baffling to me. Like wrap it up, all nine of y’all can go home, where’s the og 💀💀 also the fact that og Mirabel never got to meet Antonio is so sad. I’m sobbing 😭 but like. It’s also strange how these more than likely grown rulers let her in during a war, personally I would never. But that’s just me ☹️
GET A GRIP⁉️⁉️🙏
