Working on some pieces in white and gold with the funerary flower pendants that I’ve been making. I typically at work in black and silver. Also wanted to do gold options and it’s just a really light and joyful energy and that’s kind of their point connecting to death in ways that are not spooky but also available in black these are made from funeral flowers collected from the ground and rubbish piles in the cemetery. Here’s a recent interview I did with @petermichaelbauer of @rewildportland on what it means to be “collapse-aware” and how it intersects with death work. I so deeply respect the work of Rewild Portland: their work around ancestral skills, the deeper understandings and co-mingling with “invasive species,” their collaborations with Indigenous land-tenders and native language speakers, and their deep resistance to how “rewilding” has become yet another gate-kept trademark for western white people to monetize and escape from the real work of staying with the trouble. I send my pre-teen to their tween kid year-long outdoor program, and it has been so transformative. You may have heard of a birth doula – someone who provides non-medical support and advocacy throughout pregnancy, birth and after the baby has been born. More recently, so-called death doulas have became more popular. We are people who assist at the other end of the lifespan . We support good deaths. Death doulas can play a pivotal role in supporting a dying person and those around them. Their support can be emotional and practical.

We do many things. We can help develop a plan around the wishes and values of the dying person, advocate on behalf of the patient, attend to and manage their symptoms, conduct life reviews, and help to resolve unresolved issues for starters. “When you change the way you view birth, the way you death will change.” What I’ve observed as a death doula is most individuals have thee common…

The Book of Two Ways by Jodi Picoult was an excellent book. There was a lot of information on Egyptology, Physics, Hieroglyphics, life and death. But the human emotions are what made this book. Jodi Picoult is a very good story teller and The Book of Two Ways surpasses her previous books by far. BoTW explores relationships between men and women, husband and wife, parent and child. Years after the fact do you reach out to your past even if it hurts the ones you love, if you want to right a wrong? Thought provoking. I would definitely recommend Book of Two Ways.

Working on a new funerary flower project that im excited to share with you guys! I’ve only met a few living plants that have this same level of gentle, loving energy and nostalgia. A good activity to do as a family or even a group of friends is to write down things in your life that stand out to you. They don't have to be just the big things such as a wedding or buying a house. It can be something like the first time your mom taught you how to make a snow angel or when your friend sent you a random card in the mail.

Today I woke up excited about the future. I haven’t had this feeling in years. Yesterday I got to talk to my friend @h_cato about my studies in being a #deathdoula & while we were talking about our joys & sorrows, I realized how everything in my life has lead me to this very moment. She told me, “Ruby, you’re bridging a gap.” I don’t think Holly knows how much that means to me, but it made me cry happy tears! That’s a first in awhile lol. *My friends, we’re in some batshit crazy times that are kinda of depressing af...but dreams are still coming true?! Yes, my new career path might not be the most exciting for some people, but it brings ME joy to know that someone in their darkest hour is not alone & that they are being loved. I am determined in this next decade of my life (cuz I’m turning 30 next month, which is actually wild) to get what I’ve always dreamed of having & to make them into realities. Dealing with dead people since I was about 5 has been part of my natural life. But honestly I’m not great at having people I love die. It hits me hard because I feel, see and know so much. Recently I considered being a death doula. I’d be so good at it but being south a sensitive there are certain aspects that would be difficult for me to deal with. Anyway….
