Tech giants, like Google and Meta, have slashed diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs in 2023 despite their commitments following the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests and riots.

According to data provided by job site Indeed, cited by CNBC, DEI-related job postings in 2023 have declined 44%.

In November 2023, the last full month for which data was available, DEI job postings dropped 23% year over year.

Layoffs at Google and Meta also included employees who held leadership roles in Black employee resource groups (ERGs), CNBC said.

Devika Brij, CEO of Brij the Gap Consulting, which works with tech companies’ DEI efforts, told CNBC that some companies have cut nearly 90% of their DEI budget by midyear 2023.

“When George Floyd began to become the topic of conversations, companies and executives doubled down on their commitments and here we are only a couple years later, and folks are looking for opportunities to cut those teams,” Brij said.

Melinda Briana Epler, the founder and CEO of Empovia, said that the cuts in DEI in 2023 were “stark” compared to previous years.

“Whenever there is an economic downturn in tech, some of the first budgets that are cut are in DEI, but I don’t think we’ve seen such stark contrast as this year,” Epler told CNBC.

The layoffs come just three years following the boom in DEI initiatives that came during the Black Lives Matter protests and riots.

At this time, tech companies made a commitment to the promotion of diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

In a June 2020 letter to Google employees, CEO Sundar Pichai vocally committed to improving support for Black workers.

“The events of the past few weeks reflect deep structural challenges,” Pichai wrote. “We’ll work closely with our Black community to develop initiatives and product ideas that support long-term solutions- and we’ll keep you updated.”

In a similar June 2020 letter to Meta employees, COO Sheryl Sandberg committed to having 30% more people of color, including 30% more Black people in leadership by 2025.

“Achieving racial justice and equity is a goal all of us share – and a goal that will take real work to achieve,” Sandberg wrote.

In a statement to Fox News Digital, a Meta spokesperson said that the tech giant remains committed to their DEI initiatives.

“Our commitment to DEI remains at the center of who we are as a company,” a Meta spokesperson said. “We continue  to intentionally design equitable and fair practices to drive progress across our people, product, policy and partnerships pillars.”

In a statement to Fox News Digital, an Amazon spokesperson echoed Meta’s sentiments and said that their “DEI priorities have not changed.”

“Our DEI priorities have not changed, and we remain committed to building a more inclusive and diverse Amazon,” Margaret Callahan, a spokesperson for Amazon, said.

In a statement, Google said that their “workforce reductions” were to “sharpen” their focus.

“Our workforce reductions and company-wide efforts to sharpen our focus span the breadth of our business,” a Google spokesperson said in a statement to Fox News Digital.

“To be absolutely clear, our commitment to this work has not changed and we invested in many new programs and partnerships this year,” the Google spokesperson said.

Big Tech Layoffs in 2023

Several tech giants have tightened their workforce in 2023 after over-hiring during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meta, Microsoft Corp., Amazon and Google-parent Alphabet Inc. have also cut thousands of jobs throughout the year.

Meta, the parent of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, cut over 10,000 jobs in May 2023.

“As I’ve talked about efficiency this year, I’ve said that part of our work will involve removing jobs — and that will be in service of both building a leaner, more technical company and improving our business performance to enable our long-term vision,” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said.

Microsoft announced in Jan. 2023 that it would cut 10,000 positions.

The move, which took place at the end of the third quarter, was “in response to macroeconomic conditions and changing customer priorities,” according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).  

Amazon said in early January that it would lay off more than 18,000 employees in what would be its largest workforce reduction to date.

Google parent company Alphabet Inc. announced that it cut 12,000 jobs to weather the current economy.

Google CEO Pichai said the cuts affected teams globally, including recruiting and some corporate functions as well as some engineering and products teams.

Expect DEI to become "that which shall not be named" during 2024.

Good news for the downturn in DEI nonsense, not so good for the actual productive tech side of it, although many of these companies are bloated and often wasting time on peripheral crap anyway. e.g. Twitter 1.0 focused on policing pronouns rather than removing child porn.

One troubling issue is that DEI cultists have their eye on AI. Reports of DEI downturn have been floating around in the last couple of days, but a few of them mention that DEI apparatchiks are adamant about needing to be part of the development of AI, to make sure the AI models comply with their fundamentalist religion. The same kind we've seen from Harvard, which lies, gaslights and calls people names.

Imagine Xians saying that they need to be included in the development of AI, to make sure it's infused with Xian values and biblical scripture, and you'll understand why an AI infused with intersectionality, "other ways of knowing," and hiring for diversity optics rather than merit (see: Claudine Gay) is such a concern.

Keep in mind also that many of these organizations tout their DEI bona fides in order to cover for their own larger sins. Such as Disney working with and thanking the Uyghur concentration camps in the credits for the live-action Mulan.

For such companies, DEI was always a relationship of convenience, providing cover - "wokescreen" (or "woke washing") - for their darker secrets, and DEI parasites were happy to suck millions of dollars out of them for their snakeoil. But DEI is no longer financially or politically convenient, and the "reckoning" that activists manufactured is over and done.

During a social media sermon Jan. 12, Tory Lanez’s father revealed that his son has forgiven Megan Thee Stallion despite facing a lengthy prison sentence for her 2020 shooting.

On Thursday, Lanez’s father Sonstar Peterson took to Instagram to share a few thoughts about his son’s turbulent shooting trial and conviction. Peterson, a former pastor and ordained minister, said that he, Tory and other members of their family forgave Megan “a long time” ago for reporting Tory to the police over the shooting incident.

“This might come as a shock to many of you, but guess what?” he said in the video, which was reposted by The Shade Room. “Both my son, myself and others of our family have long decided that we are not going to hold any animosity against Megan Pete a.k.a. Megan Thee Stallion. We forgave that girl a long time ago. A long time ago because again we know that the principle of forgiveness is important to not be bound up with hatred, those things can cause diseases in the bones.”

Despite forgiving Meg, Sonstar Peterson says he will continue to fight for his son’s freedom

Further into his passionate sermon, Peterson talked about the importance of forgiveness and how its essential to protecting one’s spiritual and physical wellbeing.

“We know that the principle of forgiveness is important in order to cleanse one’s heart, to cleanse one’s soul and to not be bound up with hatred,” he continued. “Hatred, resentment, bitterness — those things can actually cause diseases of the bones, it has been proven. And it can cause sickness in your body because you’re holding onto something that is negative against the real life force in your life.”

As MADAMENOIRE previously reported, Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, was convicted Dec. 23 of shooting Megan Thee Stallion. The hip-hop star faces up to 22 years in prison and deportation to his native Canada.

Peterson said that while he and Lanez have let go of any hatred towards Meg, he remains focused on fighting for his son’s freedom.

Peterson’s righteous social media video comes just weeks after he rattled the Los Angeles courthouse with an angry outburst when jurors found Tory guilty of shooting Megan. Outside of the courtroom, Peterson lit into Jay-Z, who manages Meg under his Roc Nation label, for allegedly influencing the outcome.

“I just stood here in this Los Angeles country and witnessed the worst miscarriage of justice that this world has ever seen,” Peterson shouted as a group of reporters stood around him. He went on to shame Meg’s attorney Alex Spiro, Roc Nation COO Desiree Perez, “and the whole wicked system of Roc Nation.” He then accused Jay-Z of bartering “the souls of young men.”

Tory Lanez is due back in court Feb. 28 for his sentence hearing. The hearing was pushed back to allow time for Lanez to find a new lawyer. Now, the rapper will be represented by David Kenner, the former lawyer of Suge Knight, Snoop Dogg and several other notable hip-hop stars, according to The Root. 

Previously, Lanez was represented by George Mgdesyan.

What Has Happened to Boeing Since the 737 Max Crashes

Five years ago, 346 people were killed in two crashes involving Boeing 737 Max planes within the span of almost five months: first off the coast of Indonesia in October 2018 and then in Ethiopia in March 2019.

Boeing’s Fatal Flaw, a 2021 FRONTLINE investigation with The New York Times, examined how commercial pressures, flawed design and failed oversight contributed to those devastating tragedies and a catastrophic crisis at one of the world’s most iconic industrial names.

In recent months, Boeing has come under renewed scrutiny after a door-like panel on a Boeing 737 Max 9 operated by Alaska Airlines blew off just a few minutes after takeoff in January 2024. An updated version of our documentary examines the impact of this latest crisis.

“This was supposed to be one of the most highly scrutinized planes in the world. And here you are with another incident that was risking passengers’ lives,” the Times’ Sydney Ember says in the updated documentary.

Here we take a brief look at what has happened to Boeing since the deadly 2018 and 2019 crashes and the recent Alaska Airlines incident.

Change in Leadership

Dennis Muilenburg had been CEO of Boeing since 2015. In the aftermath of the crashes, he testified before U.S. Senate and House Committees in October 2019, acknowledging the fatal accidents happened “on my watch” and saying he and the company were accountable. He told the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, “If we knew back then what we know now, we would have grounded [the 737 Max] right after the first accident.”

Two months after the congressional hearings, on Dec. 23, 2019, Muilenburg was fired by Boeing. The company described the move as “necessary to restore confidence” in Boeing “as it works to repair relationships with regulators, customers, and all other stakeholders.”

David Calhoun stepped into the role of CEO in January 2020 and continues to fill the position.

A $2.5 Billion DOJ Settlement and Challenges

On Jan. 7, 2021, the Department of Justice announced that Boeing would pay a $2.5 billion settlement, resolving a DOJ charge that the company had conspired to defraud the Federal Aviation Administration’s Aircraft Evaluation Group.

The DOJ’s criminal investigation focused on the actions of two employees who Boeing said in court documents “deceived the FAA AEG” about the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS) onboard the 737 Max — a system the DOJ said “may have played a role” in both 737 Max crashes. The DOJ said the employees’ “deception” led to information about MCAS being left out of a key document released by the FAA, as well as airplane manuals and pilot-training materials.

As Boeing’s Fatal Flaw recounts, congressional investigators found internal documents showing that, after Boeing realized the impact MCAS would have on pilot training and FAA certification, some Boeing employees suggested removing all references to MCAS from training manuals.

“Boeing’s employees chose the path of profit over candor by concealing material information from the FAA concerning the operation of its 737 Max airplane and engaging in an effort to cover up their deception,” said David P. Burns, the acting assistant attorney general of the DOJ’s criminal division when the settlement was announced.

The company entered into a deferred prosecution agreement with the DOJ, in which Boeing agreed to pay a nearly $244 million fine, to set up a $500-million fund for the families of people who died in the two crashes, and to pay $1.77 billion to airlines that had been affected by the 20-month grounding of the 737 Max that began in March 2019.

Boeing also agreed to continue cooperating with the DOJ’s Fraud Section on “any ongoing or future investigations and prosecutions” and is required to report any alleged violation of fraud laws by Boeing employees when dealing with foreign or domestic agencies, regulators or airline customers.

Boeing declined FRONTLINE’s request to be interviewed for the documentary. In a statement, the company said safety is its top priority and it has worked closely with regulators, investigators and stakeholders “to implement changes that ensure accidents like these never happen again.”

Former Boeing Pilot Found Not Guilty for Fraud

In October 2021, a federal grand jury criminally indicted Mark Forkner, Boeing’s Former Chief Technical Pilot for the 737 Max Airplane, on fraud charges. Forkner, who became the first and so far only individual to face criminal charges after the two fatal crashes, was accused of providing “materially false, inaccurate and incomplete information” to FAA regulators about flight-control software involved in the 2018 and 2019 crashes. Forkner was later found not guilty of all charges in federal court.

Forkner declined to be interviewed for the documentary, but his lawyer told the Times that his communications with the FAA were honest and that “he would never jeopardize the safety of other pilots or their passengers.”

Lawsuits by Families of Crash Victims

By November 2019, Boeing was facing more than 150 lawsuits filed by families of people who had died in the two crashes — over 50 of the suits stemming from the Indonesian crash and about 100 from the crash in Ethiopia, according to the Associated Press’ review of federal court records.

In July 2020, Boeing told a U.S. federal court that claims related to 171 of the 189 people killed in the Indonesia crash were either partially or fully settled, although the settlements were not publicly disclosed.

As of June 2023, cases related to 68 passengers from the Ethiopian Airlines crash were pending.

The Grounding and Return of the 737 Max 8 and Max 9

In the days after the second 737 Max crashed in March 2019, regulators around the world — from China to the European Union and several other countries — grounded the plane. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration followed suit on March 13, 2019, after initially saying the planes were safe to fly.

When the FAA retested and approved the 737 Max 8 and Max 9, ending the grounding in November 2020, it required airlines to take the following steps before putting the planes back into service: installing new flight-control-computer and display-system software; incorporating revised flight-crew procedures; rerouting wiring; completing a test of the “angle of attack” sensor system, which had contributed to both the 2018 and 2019 crashes; and performing an operational readiness flight.

The FAA, in conjunction with aviation agencies from Canada, Brazil and the European Union, also concluded that pilots operating the 737 Max would need to complete special training. It is not clear who would pay for this additional training, which reversed one of Boeing’s original sales pitches to airlines for the 737 Max: that the plane would require minimal pilot training.

A December 2020 Senate committee report criticized Boeing and the FAA’s handling of the 737 Max recertification testing, saying that, based on whistleblower information and testimony, it appeared Boeing and FAA officials had “established a pre-determined outcome,” and that Boeing officials “inappropriately coached” test pilots in the MCAS simulator. The report alleged, “It appears, in this instance, FAA and Boeing were attempting to cover up important information that may have contributed to the 737 MAX tragedies.”

The FAA responded at the time, saying: “Working closely with other international regulators, the FAA conducted a thorough and deliberate review of the 737 Max.” The agency added it was “confident” the issues that led to the two crashes had been “addressed through the design changes required and independently approved by the FAA and its partners.”

“We have learned many hard lessons” from the crashes, Boeing said in its own statement at the time. The company said it took the committee’s findings seriously and would continue to review the report in full.

Following the Senate report, families of the 2019 Ethiopian crash victims wrote to the FAA and the U.S. Department of Transportation in a letter dated Dec. 22, 2020, and reviewed by Reuters, asking for the 737 Max approval to be rescinded and for an investigation to “determine whether the MAX recertification process was tainted.”

A Brazilian airline was the first to fly a 737 Max after regulators there followed the FAA in ungrounding the plane. On Dec. 29, 2020 — a week after the families’ letter — the 737 Max flew paying passengers in America for the first time after nearly two years of being grounded. A month later, Europe’s aviation authority also gave the 737 Max clearance to fly.

On Aug. 26, 2021, India lifted its ban on the 737 Max after “closely” monitoring the plane’s performance elsewhere and noting “no untoward reporting.” China, which was the first country to ground Max jets after the deadly crashes, resumed commercial flights with the model in January 2023.

The 737 Max 10

On June 18, 2021, Boeing’s new model 737 Max 10 took to the skies for its first flight. The Max 10 is larger than the Max 8, which was involved in the 2018 and 2019 crashes, and the Max 9. According to Boeing’s technical specs, the Max 10 is 14 feet longer than the Max 8 and can seat a maximum of 230 people, compared to the Max 8’s capacity of 210.

At the time of the test flight, Boeing was already working on additional safety features in the Max 10 requested by European regulators, according to Reuters.

“We’re going to take our time on this certification,” Stan Deal, who became president and CEO of Boeing’s Commercial Airplanes division in October 2019, said at the time of the Max 10’s first flight, according to The Seattle Times. “We’re committed to make further safety enhancements.”’

The FAA cleared the Max 10 to begin test flights, a step towards certification, last November.

Alaska Airlines Plane Incident

On January 5, an Alaska Airlines jet made an emergency landing in Portland, Oregon, after a portion of its fuselage blew out and left a door-sized hole in the side of the aircraft while it was around 16,000 feet in the sky. None of the 171 passengers and six crew members were seriously injured. The FAA temporarily grounded more than 170 Max 9 jets so they could be inspected.

In the aftermath, Boeing CEO David Calhoun has said, “Boeing is accountable for what happened.”

A Feb. 6 preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board said that the bolts meant to secure the door-like panel appeared to be missing before the flight.

Later the same month, the FAA released a long-awaited report that found that Boeing’s safety culture has been “inadequate” and “confusing.” The FAA gave Boeing 90 days to come up with a plan to address quality control issues.

The FAA conducted a six-week audit after the Alaska Airlines incident, and on March 4 said that it found Boeing had allegedly failed to comply with manufacturing quality control requirements.

Boeing now faces legal trouble in relation to the Jan. 5 event, including lawsuits filed by passengers and shareholders.

On Feb. 21, Boeing told employees that Ed Clark, who led the 737 program since 2021, would be replaced. The memo announcing Clark’s departure and other changes said the company was focused “on ensuring that every airplane we deliver meets or exceeds all quality and safety requirements.”

The Justice Department has also begun a criminal investigation into Boeing in the aftermath of the Alaska Airlines incident, as reported first by The Wall Street Journal.

“Cultural change doesn’t happen overnight, especially at big corporations like this,” David Gelles, one of the Times reporters featured in Boeing’s Fatal Flaw, says. “If Boeing wants to get back to that place of grandeur where it was for so long one of the most important American companies, it’s going to take not four years, but it might take 14.”

20230129 - more multi-market musings

S&P500: I wrote two weeks ago that “only a sustained breakout past that channel would have me thinking of anything bullish right now”; well, there’s a good case to be made for that now being the case, after Jan. 18′s triple bearish engulfing was completely retraced and no gap fill sell signal ever materialized; all Ichimoku signs are bullish; that said, the 1-box P&F chart suggests a rather modest upside target of 4,150, and the 3-box chart suggests no upside target whatsoever, so this is probably not worth trying to trade unless there’s a pullback to backtest that trendline, say around the 4,000 - 4,020 zone with stop under 3,950

Crude oil: crude has been amazingly consistent in its failure to close above its Ichimoku cloud (there’s a flat cloud top at 81.91 and it’s there for the entire month of February besides); Friday’s session was a bearish double engulfing on the most volume we’ve had in a while and completed an RSI triple top; we have a pretty clear triple top in the 82.40 - 82.65 zone, with the traditional target being as low as 74.50; but to make it worth the risk, I need a deeper retrace than what we’re currently seeing premarket

Corn: is now showing all bullish Ichimoku signs but is also right up at resistance again; StockCharts.com says the 3-box P&F chart shows a price target of 765, but that seems a bit unbelievable; I’d like to see a pullback to the conversion line before trying anything here

Soybeans: made a small double bottom, but both that trough and the most recent peak have been below the channel lines, indicating a weakening uptrend; RSI and MACD have gone nowhere but sideways for the past three months even as the price has slowly risen, which does not inspire bullish confidence either; that said, all Ichimoku signs are bullish again; Friday was probably the time to go long if any (when it closed above the baseline on less volume)

Wheat: did not sustain a breakdown below support, despite the heavy volume down day of Jan. 23 that appeared to slice through it; currently sits right at the downtrend supply line from October as well as horizontal resistance from the Jan. 18 high of 760.25; still looks bearish until such time as the downtrend line is broken, but if that does come to pass, then it’s worth noting that it would make the Jan. 23 low an MACD/RSI divergence (arguably on the weekly scale as well!)

Silver: is still chopping sideways, but it’s worth noting now that we got four sessions in the past two weeks with heavier volume than any day since November, and they were all down days; MACD has been sliding for a month and a half, which is not bullish; RSI breaking below 49 could signal a selloff

Bitcoin: in my last update I was looking out for a gap fill buy signal, but much like the miracle in Phoenix Wright, the gap fill never happen; all Ichimoku signs are still bullish; this could be seen as five waves up from the Nov. 9 low, so I’ll be looking for a three-wave corrective pullback before trying to go long

TSLA: the target of 162 was met and then rocketed past; not sure why I did not go long on Jan. 19; that said, Friday’s session had the highest volume in two years(!) and certainly looks like a buying climax, so with any luck there will be a selloff soon that provides a better entry point; it’s also worth noting that we have now had three gaps up since the Jan. 6 low, which usually implies some backfilling to come

AMZN: 

the downtrend line from August is now broken, even if not particularly flashily so

we’re coming up on resistance at 105 again

it’s now fairly obvious that the Dec. 28 and Jan. 6 bottoms were significant RSI/MACD divergences on both the daily AND weekly scales, as well as lining up horizontally with the March 2020 low!

traditional upside target for the presumed bullish flag pattern would be right around 109, or close to the top end of the  big October gap

on a longer view, upside target for the double bottom or head-and-shoulders with the neckline at 105 would be 128

given the big divergence (last time it happened was last summer, and on the weekly chart I’m having trouble finding any examples -- 2014-2015 maybe?), I may just go long anyway, especially if there’s a pullback

in retrospect Jan. 10 was the day to go long, as it confirmed the gap up from the Jan. 6 bottom and that big divergence (even if on low volume) and also saw RSI break convincingly above resistance

General Thoughts: Quite enjoyed it. I think the fact that I knew so many things (like the burrito scene, the crying shower scenes, the girls slapping scene, etc from tiktok) and knew that Khai was a douchebag but would get redeemed made it much easier for me to like. Also, I just like OffGun and that bias also played a part for sure. I wish we got to see more of a gradual realization of Khai liking Third, a less angsty episode 12, and less of Two/Bone/Lynn. 

I wasn’t sure how well the characters would be developed and how their change throughout the story would be written but actually, the characters progressed in a way I enjoyed. I liked the movie references even if I didn’t understand any of it lol. Third and Khai’s acting was good. Gun was skillful in playing Third, tugs at your heartstrings and cries at the drop of a hat. Off was so charming as Khai, I definitely would’ve liked Khai less if he wasn’t played so charmingly.

Didn’t enjoy how... unsure of himself and his relationship Khai seemed in certain parts, I want him to be confident in his place! Enjoyed seeing the parts where Third reassures Khai and where they spend time together.

General Thoughts: The actors were freaking good. The story had a lot of heart, full of earnestness. I liked how it had like... so little conflict to be honest. It’s all about liking one another and supporting one another (even though... sometimes it’s enabling bad behaviour lmfao) and understanding one another and having fun. Power of friendship! Power of queer friendship! Toh, Jao, Daisy, Som are soooo good, as were Nuea’s friends. The characters freaking liked each other and did their best to understand each other and were there for each other. There was seriously no major conflict between the pairs and that’s so good to me. They just liked each other, man. Nuea and Toh sooo in love and trusted each other and wanted the best for the other and just >.< Wish we got more of the f/f Fon/KwanKong couple, as well as more of Daisy’s gender exploration and Intouch/Daisy becuase I felt like both of those were wrapped up too quickly in like 1 minute in episode 14. The cringe was still a lot sometimes and some parts made me raise an eyebrow and it’s not necessarily a masterpiece of a show but subverted expectations in such an eager, earnest manner.

General Thoughts: This was fairly fun. I came here for Fluke (and OhmFluke) but really like the Jedi and Ray storyline! I loved how cute they were as a couple and how Jedi was willing to do anything to protect his relationship and stand up for Ray. Pierce and Phoon were... alright. Angsty but I was just like “rip, y’all should’ve been in the same page since before” the whole time. I wish the writing was stronger and had more nuance, especially regarding the celebrity and idol culture, because I would’ve loved to see a more nuanced and realistic depiction.

General Thoughts: It’s just 50 minutes long but it really freaking touched me. I loved the blend of humour, the familial support and turmoil, the lovely yet rocky relationship between Ryusuke and Mizuki. Everything that could go wrong went wrong but it all came back together in the end T.T I wanted the wedding to succeed so badly, I’m so envious of how brave Ryusuke ended up being by actually coming out (despite choosing the most unhinged way to do so), how in the end his father came around, how everybody congratulated them. This was freaking fun and it freaking hurt.  Glad for the 2 tiktoks that made me bump it up my list. Maybe I’ll rewatch someday.

Life: Love on the Line (Director's Cut)

General Thoughts: Flaws, I guess are I wish there was more of Nishi and his characterization and I wish the time jumps weren’t so big when around like 28 to 36 (or that they explore those years more). The ending is freaking unrealistic but I’m trying to think of it differently: The show was too realistic for many parts of it (including deciding to let go of your love and yourself in order to conform) but at the end, it’s more fantastical like what if I could leave this fake marriage? stand up to my parents? get back with the love of my life? I love this interpretation actually. How do I feel about Itou? He hurt Yuki and Shiraishi deeply, deeply because he was selfish and terrible but I find it difficult to hate him for it. His struggle and monologues to convince himself of his decisions were fucking great, as was his final outburst in front of his mother.

Anyway, I enjoyed getting to watch them through the years, how domestic and in love they were, the acting was good, the way certain things came back around and objects or words had so much significance. I watched We’re Both Grooms before this and they both had similar things that I liked: following an established couple who are able to sell the idea that they've been dating for a while  + flawed, flawed, flawed characters + societal/familial pressure + unaccepting family that is accepting in the end.

General Thoughts: The best parts of it are: the parents (rival Pete’s dad. They weren’t the parents of either of the guys but they still cared for them + their daughter Chika and had personalities and were involved in their child’s life + was supportive of her.) and the characters in general because there are a handful but they’re all important and interact with each other and serve a purpose and it’s definitely one of the best uses of characters in a BL I’ve seen. I thought Chika and her parents, Ako, Nagisa’s ex, Chika’s coworker were all freaking well-built characters and served their purpose well, I liked their interactions between each other (there were so many) and with Nagisa or Shun. I wish they actually dated in the show for a bit. Also would’ve liked to see some more of Shun actually liking Nagisa, even if he doesn’t realize it. It’s weird that one of my criticisms is that I wish Shun was a bit more well-developed when I think all the side characters were really well developed for their roles and short runtime.

General Thoughts: I don’t know what to feel now except like... empty? I T.T That was really good. I wish we got to see another scene or two of Nagisa and Shun living by themselves without Sora though and how her absence has affected them (Nagisa especially) and how they’ve dealt with it.It also kinda didn’t feel like a sequel to the first one lol there were like of the barest hints but it all still makes sense without having watched the series. Anyway, just... really good, really achy. Like the slice of life aspect (in a different slice-of-life way than the first series) and just how slow it felt, the child (Sora was so freaking cute), the twinge of heartache in every scene. Just like the series, it also just had so many other things that aren’t just Nagisa and Shun together. This was like a mix of History 2: Right or Wrong and Life: Love On The Line.

General Thoughts: It was okay, I think after watching the last few Japanese movies which were freaking incredible to me, their slapstick manga style humour was even less my taste (I didn’t care for it in Cherry Magic or Kieta Hatsukoi either). I didn’t care about the characters, the main character was slightly irritating, and I found the show boring. Interesting and fun premise, I just didn’t care for the execution.

I’m... gonna start KinnPorsche and hopefully not have to wait for episode 13 if I pace myself but probably have to wait for episode 14. Think I’ll be preoccupied with KinnPorsche till the 9th and then probably another week of recovering/moving on. So I’ll probably not actually watch many shows next month, just KinnPorsche + a few other Thai BLs. If I decide to not watch many Thai BLs after KP, I’ll go to Taiwan and probably watch some 2022 ones (Plus & Minus, DNA Says Love You) and an older ones like Red Balloon.

K: Hi, this is Dir en grey's Kaoru with this week's episode of The Freedom of Expression. Joe, Tasai, welcome. Well, I feel kinda attatched to the topic this week. Joe, please could you..?

J: Yes, its sad news, but.. America's largest musical instrument retail chain 'Guitar Center' is preparing to file for bankruptcy. According to the New York Times, its possible that the chain might go bankrupt due to business difficulties. The chain is the biggest musical instrument chain in America, and has around 300 stores nationwide. Taken over in 2007, the business struggled hard with the switch to online sales, but was pretty successful in two and a half years, and up until this February had been increasing sales for ten quarters in a row. However, because Guitar Center is dependent on in-store sales, the business took a huge hit from the coronavirus pandemic. Sales for the most recent financial year were declared to be $2.3 billion, but the chain has $1.3 billion in debt, and its credit rating was downgraded in April. According to the New York Times, the chain fell behind with interest payments of $45 million this month for the first time ever, and although they have been given 32 hours, there is a chance they will default on thier debts. According to specific sources, Guitar Center have been in contact with thier creditors, will file for bankruptcy within the month, and are considering a plan to withdraw at the start of 2021. 

K: It says within the year, right?

J: Oh, yes, sorry, within the year.

K: The first time I went to this store was about 23 or 24 years ago, when we went to America for recording. We were taken there..me and the other members, but it was so huge!

J: It is huge, yeh.

K: It was in LA, but I never relised that type of place existed.

J: Its Hollywood, right?

K: Yeh.

T: How big was it? Like how many guitars?

K: It was as big as a Japanese supermarket.

T: Ehh?

J: Its as big as a wearhouse, isn't it?

K: Well, yeh, it looks like that from outside too.

T: Was it like the instrument shops you see in Tokyo?

K: No, no, no. They normally don't have drum kits and stuff assembled in stores here, but they do there.

T: Ehh? Thats really big.

J: It is. So Kaoru, did you go there and test out the guitars?

K: I have done. But back then, I didn't really feel any preferences as for the instruments, I just got the feel of the place. I was just like, 'Wow, Im in Guitar Center!'. It was a great feeling seeing all the different instruments.

J: The Americans try out the instruments pretty enthusiastically, don't they?

K: They were really good! haha

J: Right?

K: The people playing...I gradually just stopped trying stuff out there.

J, T: Hahha.

K: But when we go on tours and the equipment breaks or something, we have been to Guitar Center to get replacements before. So if it disappears, we could be in a bit of trouble on tours.

J: Thats right.

T: Yeah.

K: Its a bit risky ordering stuff online to arrive at the venue in time.

T: Of course.

K: If you go to the store you can just get what you need and leave.

J: With 300 stores, it seems like there are quite a lot in big cities, so if anything happened on tour, you could just drop into one of the stores..

K: Yeh yeh yeh.

J: And they would have what you wanted.

T: America is amazing. It says here they worked hard with the move to online sales, but don't you need to test-play a guitar before buying? Is it ok to buy online?

K: Nah, but people buy everything online these days.

J: Yeah.

T: I kinda imagined you would go to the store, play the instrument, and then decide you want to buy it.

K: Well, yeh. But I didn't test out my first guitar before buying it.

J: Oh, is that so?

K: It was a specific model that was sold out, so I had to reserve it..

T: I see.

K: And pay for it in advance, then wait till it arrived.

J: Ehh? But you knew what type of guitar you were getting though, right?

K: Yeh, I knew what shape it would be and stuff, but its cause that was my first guitar.

T: By the way, how old were you when you bought your first guitar?

K: Around first year of high school.

T: Ahh, I see.

J: Ahh. Eh?! First year of high school when you bought your first guitar?

K: Yeh. I started playing a bit earlier than that using borrowed guitars.

T: So, you thought, 'I want one', and bought your first one, right?

J: I bought my first electric guitar when i was in Junior High school. Everyone starts a band at that age, don't they? And I thought, if Im gonna do it, then I should be on guitar, right? With drums you really need space at home to set them up, so I couldn't buy a set. I bought a kind of cheap guitar/amp set for beginners. But I couldn't play the F chord properly, it was pretty frustrating.

T: This will make me look clueless, but Kaoru, how many guitars have you actually bought?

K: I havn't really..

T: Oh, not many?

K: No, I havn't actually bought that many...Like 10? I usually have them made through contracts with ESP.

J: But by now you have signature models and stuff, right?

K: Yeah. I mean, I will buy a guitar myself if I want to play it at home or something.

J: Ahh. Well, its kinda sad seeing these musical instrument stores disappear.

K: I've always had the impression that musical instruments don't sell in large numbers anyway.

J: But..well, i've done some interviews in relation to this, and it seems like musical instruments have been selling quite well during covid. Especially in America, it seems like there was a lot of people in the countryside playing guitar at home. But as for sales, they would probably buy online, especially during covid when you couldn't go to the store in person, I think some of the stores would have been closed. So even if online sales have increased...like with Guitar Center, if you have that many stores..there will be the burden of maintenance costs, staff wages, rent, and somehow the debt will grow and grow. But if online buying continues to develop in this way, we might see an increasing trend of people who play guitar without having tested it first.

K: Hmm, yeh, they won't be trying them out first. ???*1

J, T: Yeah, thats right.

J: What are your thoughts on this, Kaoru? About the concept of a test-run disappearing?

K: I wonder whether young people will still buy guitars. I think the people buying them will be like wealthy people etc. But I don't think young people these days are that interested in buying a guitar and starting a band. If they do become interested in musical instruments, I think it will be more and more online sales.

J: I wonder how thats gonna go, with the guitar makers and musical instrument shops struggling..

K: But even if guitars sell, I wonder if there is anyone who will still buy amps?

J: Ahh, I see.

K: Young people these days don't really buy amps, do they? There are amp simulators now, so you can buy one of these machines and input the data digitally, and then just use a regular speaker.

J: And thats just enough, right?

K: Well, you can do it like that, yeh. And you can simulate lots of different types of amp, so you can get specific sounds. People probably aren't buying the real thing these days.

J: But the subtleness of the sound is different, isn't it?

K: Its totally different.

J: Right? Its completely different. So its...Well, for peope like us, we've heard the sound coming through amps at live houses, we've been hearing that kind of sound for years, but for young people, in one sense a different sound is...

K: (*Kaoru talking about amps/simulators. I don't know enough about amps to really get what he means here, sorry!*)

J: Ah, so if they start thinking there is only one choice, rather than listening to the old types and making a reasoned decision?

K: Yes. So even now, if you go to a Japanese musical instrument shop, there used to be amps all lined up, like Marshall or Fender etc. Now, there are no amps, but many types of simulator machines. You can just buy them and take them straight home. It seems like they sell well. So if you find one guitar that is easy to play, and you have one of these simulators, you can make all sorts of sounds.

J: Yeah.

T: I see.

J: Like usally, if the neck is different, the responding sound will differ, but you will be able to compensate for that with a simulator, so..

K: I don't think many people do that.

J: Oh, right.

K: But I don't know.

Kami: Um, can I ask something? Um, I've played guitar before. But I got blisters straight away, and my wrist started to hurt. Does that happen to you too, Kaoru?

T, J: Haha

T: Thats a grest question to ask a guitarist, Kami.

K: Well, during recording...or like when recording something all in one go, it does start to hurt, haha.

T: Haha

J: If you are playing non-stop? But hey, I wonder how this situation will look in 10 or 20 years?

K: There'll be no music stores like Tower Records etc by then.

J: Yeh, yeh.

T: Hmm, yeh.

J: Old guys will be sad. 

K: But even with cars and stuff, there is that kind of rental service now, isn't there?

T: Carsharing?

K: Yeah. So won't car showrooms eventually disappear?

J: I think so. And with clothes, there's a high possibility that stores will start to disappear.

K: Oh, now you mention clothes, do you remember that online thing we talked about before where they put the clothes that you like onto your photo?

J: Yeah, yeah.

K: I had thought about doing that, but the site has shut down!

J: Ah, its over?

K: Yeah, so I couldn't do it.

J: Oh, thats a shame.

T: It is.

J: So many businesses have been hit by covid, I think the view that we see before us will be a lot different by next year, or the year after. Getting aound this will have an effect on the way we live or express ourselves, I feel.

T: I lived on an island in Kagoshima when I was little. We had a Shamisen in our house, it had a kind of plastic stick to play it.

J: Can you play, Tasai?

T: No, not at all. I only ever just picked it up sometimes for fun.

J: You could show us a Kagoshima folk song to finish.

T: Haha, no no no. Why?

J: I don't know. To wrap it up?

T: No, it wouldn't wrap it up, haha. 

K: In that case, Joe, you should play guitar.

J: Lets perform together sometime!

K: No way!

T: Joe!

K: No thanks, haha.

J: I'd gain prestige by playing with Kaoru from Dir en grey. There would be no merit for you though, Kaoru.

T: I'd go numb, I wouldn't be able to play at all if I were you. haha. Playing next to a pro.

J: Well, what can I say? I have big dreams. No, but if we did play together, I'd practice, I'd give it my best.

T: Of course.

K: Well, yeh.

J: If, for example, we played together on this youtube channel next year, I'd be serious about practicing.

Kami: I'll do it too.

J: Kami too?!

K: Hahaha

J: Would you, Kami?

Kami: I would.

K: But your hands would start to hurt.

T: Right.

Kami: I'd practice.

J: You'll practice? In that case, we could have Tasai on Shamisen too, and all play together.

T: Shamisen is ok? Well, I guess its a stringed instrument like guitar.

J: Lets announce something.

A/N: So this one is just pure fun. I just wanted to write something that would hopefully make you laugh, or at least smile xD ^^ Please, tell me your favourite part/line in the comments :D

Setting: Hogwarts Grounds, Snowball fight among students in the courtyard

Characters: Snape, McGonagall, Filch, Flitwick (early years, Snape is about 23-25)

Word count: 1576

Warnings: Prepare to laugh (I think/hope)

"Take that!" A snowball came wooshing through the air, the girl it was aimed for ducked just in time. "You!" she hollered and threw a snowball back at the boy. He jumped to the side and it hit the back of a Slytherin girl. "What the- oh you Gryffindors!" she snarled and threw a snowball back. It smacked the girl right in the face and she fell backwards just as the courtyard was filling up with students walking between classes.

"OH IT'S ON!" the Gryffindor girl shrieked as she gathered snow. "IT’S WAR!" the Slytherin girl screamed as she did the same. Students took sides, Gryffindors an Hufflepuffs on one side, Slytherins on the other with a few Ravenclaws as well while others just watched the unfurling of a full-on snowball war between the houses.

Commands were shouted, snowballs were made and thrown. It was chaos. And what usually happens when there is chaos? Accidents.

A snowball flew through the air at a high velocity just as the teachers marched out to clear of the ongoing battle. It hit Snape right in the face with a harsh splat. The whole courtyard froze. Everyone stood still as snow fell from Snape's face and his eyes burned with rage.

"50 points from Gryffindor!" he roared as the snowball had come from that side of the courtyard. "Now, hold on Severus," McGonagall said as she came up behind the Gryffindor and Hufflepuff students, "it was just a snowball." Snape sneered at McGonagall.

The students remained still and quiet. "Oh really?" Snape purred. McGonagall's eyes bulged. "Now, hold on just a moment Sev-" *smack* McGonagall's face was hidden behind a splat of snow. She wiped it off with her hand in one swipe.

"You- you disrespectful-" "Now, now, Minerva," Severus purred, "it was just a snowball." He threw her words back at her and McGonagall seemed to explode. "Just a snowball? Just a snowball?!" she thundered with that high pitched voice of hers. Severus gave her a malicious grin.

"Oh, I have had enough of this!" McGonagall shouted, "this is no time to play!" The students watched the bickering between the teachers. Unaware that Snape had in fact already summoned a heap of new snowballs. This ought to shut the old cat up. With non-verbal magic, he began to throw them at the students belonging to Gryffindor and Hufflepuff. And McGonagall.  

"Severus! Enough!" "Oh I'm not doing anything, it's my clever students," Snape purred and McGonagall's face turned red. She glared at him as he smiled wickedly. "Oh this is WAR!" she roared and the students cheered on her side of the courtyard. "Damn right it is!" Snape called back before he roared at the student to attack with all their strength.

"Flitwick, more snowballs!" McGonagall shrieked, "Abernathy, throw harder! Flake, throw longer!" she commanded as the gryffpuff side rolled into action. "Not so fast!" Snape roared back before he turned to his students, "are you Slytherins or not?! Throw the damn snowballs!" he hissed and wicked smiles spread out. "How hard?" a broadly shouldered boy said as he bounced a snowball up and down in his hand. "As hard as you can, McRoy." The boy smiled. "You hear the professor boys and gals, it's on!"

Snowballs flew left and right, students and professors ducked as they tried to avoid them. "Professor! What are you doing on their side?!" a girl cried out, her robes in Ravenclaw colours. Flitwick seemed embarrassed and at a loss for words as McGonagall commanded him left and right. Snape chuckled. "He's chosen the weak side," he growled and the girl seemed horrified by it. "Let's show him how clever his students really is, no?" The girl nodded, seemingly pissed off at her own head of house and Snape was clever enough to use it.

And boy oh boy did his side do well. As he Slytherins used their brute strength and rallied themselves by their pure ambition to win the Ravenclaws used their wits to throw balls that curved and split into several. Some even went so far as to throw chasing spells on the snowballs so they would find their targets no matter what.

"Clever, very clever!" McGonagall screamed with huffing breaths. "What's the matter little kitty? Lost your spirit?" Snape chuckled out and Minerva seemed to get even more infuriated as she herself began to throw snowballs using magic.

Snape sneered, oh, playing hardcore now, are we? Well, two can play that game. Snape waved over three Slytherins. "Take the flanks, use non-verbal magic, pound them." The rather large boys smiled wickedly at Snape's command. He gave them a very tight smile and off they went. He was just about to partake himself when a familiar voice rang out over the courtyard in an echoing pant.

"Students throwing snowballs! Students at the courtyard throwing snowballs!" Filch called out as he ran in a weird fashion with a hand on his chest and Mrs Norris hot on his tale. "THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO THROW SNOWBALLS YOU BLUBBERING IDIOT!" McGonagall screamed at the poor man who looked utterly confused at the strange scene. "Sorry, mam'" he sighed as he looked out over the courtyard that had paused at his arrival. Everyone was looking at the scabby man; throws were frozen mid-air.

Filch threw and threw, by Merlin did he have good aim for such a scrawny looking arm and half-open eyes. He had put Mrs Norris to work as well, she stroked around behind enemy lines so the students fell as they stumbled with her jumping between their legs. Students shouted, professors commanded and snowballs flew in a flurry.

"Well don't just stand there! Help! Get more snowballs Mr Filch!" McGonagall chided. Filch looked at her and then at Snape; who smiled at the man who he had actually grown quite close to during his school years. "Sorry mam', my allegiance is spoken for," Mr Filch stated and he hurried over to Snape who smiled triumphantly at McGonagall who seemed to be quite near a complete explosion at that.

"Welcome to the winning side, Argus," Snape said with a smile and Filch nodded as Mrs Norris stroked Snape's legs, "Attack!" Snape roared in a thunder of command and the snowballs flew yet again as students screamed at the opposite side to 'take that' and 'run away loser' paired with some laughs and screams as snowballs hit their intended targets.

McGonagall had hauled din more students from among the onlookers. Snape had not, he did not force anyone to participate but boy oh boy did he get the ones engaging to fight as if it were life or death.

A snowball hit him right on his hooked nose with a thudding splat. McGonagall laughed and that had been the final straw. Snape made snowballs rain down on the enemies. Wave after wave of snowballs until there was so much snow they could no longer move. "VICTORY!" shouted the slytherclaw side with joyous glee as they jumped around while howling with laughter at the losing side. Snape gave McGonagall a wicked smile before he walked over.

"Just a snowball, was it?" he drawled on a chuckle. "Oh alright, fine! Now get us out of here," McGonagall shrieked. "I believe a reward should be given for such a great achievement." Snape smiled as he straightened and looked towards his side of the courtyard. "100 points to Slytherin," he said and the students clad in green colours cheered, "and 100 points to Ravenclaw," he continued and the few students that had participated on his side of the snowball war beamed at him.

"Yes yes, whoopie-do for you," McGonagall muttered, "now get us out of here," she continued and Snape vanished the snow with a swirling motion of his wand that set lose a controlled flame that melted the snow without burning anything else. "Fabulous, now I'm soaked." McGonagall took out her own wand and dried herself as best she could before she told the student's to get changed before next class.

Everyone filed out with loud talk of epic snow battles and awesome teachers. Snape could not help but chuckle, but as he moved his eyes to his college she angrily tapped her foot and glared at him.

"We do not teach students to battle in this way," she chided. "Oh, well you could have ended it at any moment, Minerva. We all know that, don't pretend you didn't have fun." Snape arched a brow towards her and she huffed. "I will not admit that this is the most fun I have had in years, and I will definitely not admit that it was thanks to you. And I will most certainly, under no circumstances, admit that I'm hoping it's a new tradition at Hogwarts." Snape laughed out loud as McGonagall walked away with her head held high and a strut to her steps.

"Come on, Argus. Let's get inside," Snape said as Filch stepped up to him with Mrs Norris in his arms, "No need to clean this up, it's just snow. It will sort itself out." Filch seemed relieved at Snape's words and gave the young man a grin that showcased his yellowing teeth.

"You did a good one here lad," he said and Snape nodded with a smile at the man before they both strode in tot he castle with a victorious air about them as the rumours had already started to spread around Hogwarts.

As you can see I'm working on not doing too long fics as there is no way I'd be able to do all of Snapemas if I write 4k+ fics xD I'm not very good at it though; I always feel as if there should be more - but it's good practice! :D
