The countryside lay under a soft quilt of white snow, slowing the Harrington's daily rhythm to a listless drawl.

Helena stuck close to Eddy, tending to the hearth and keeping the home's warmth. Silas, in his study and workshop, weaved back and forth, immersed in his usual tasks. With no plants to tend, Lucile's afternoons often found her in the company of Josephine, Their daily commune involved strolling along the river, lost in the winter's pale beauty.

Yet, amid this façade of normalcy, Eddy's illness cast a long shadow. Helena gently lowered him onto the bed, his strength waning.

Too feeble to rise on his own, even for the simplest tasks. "There you go, my love. I'll fetch water and your medicine," Helena whispered, attempting a smile.

As she tried to rise, Eddy's grasp held her back. "Dove...", Adjusting on the bed, Helena leaned in, "I'll only be a moment, and then I'll be right back—"

"My Dove." Eddy's tender look interrupted her. " We both know the medicine can only do so much."

Helena's movements ceased, a frozen mask of denial etched across her face. "Don't utter such foreboding words. You will recover, for I am by your side."

Eddy summoned every ounce of strength to grip her hands " Dove, I have witnessed the cruel dance of illness within my own family…We must confront the reality that lies ahead and be prepare for—"

"Please," Helena's plea cut through, the weight of his unspoken words," Not now." Her body trembled as she leaned down to kissed him, desperately trying to stave off the tears.

"When? " " Soon. " she whispered, her voice heavy with the burden as she nestled beside him.

Newlyn Fisher Clothing Set

I come to you today with this little historical seaside fashion interlude (before going back to work on more 1880′s sets). This set includes cable knit sweaters in high and low waisted, and variations on traditional fishermen smocks. More pics and download below

This set is partly inspired by the works of the school of Newlyn, a group of painters known to have depicted the surrounding of Newlyn, a Cornish coastal town, and its many fishermen in the 1880′s to 1900′s. And here is the painting that I referenced in the promo picture.

—————————  Cableknit Sweater  ————————

This is the sweater from the Werewolf pack without the little laced up strings on the shoulders (why do you always add these unnecessary details EA ? 😅). I’ve made a short version (S) for my high waisted needs and a long (L) version, for both masc and fem frames, as well as both adult and children. 

Cableknit sweaters originated from Ireland, in the Aran Islands, though other types of knitted jumpers called gansey already existed in the British, Irish and Channel isles. They were created between the 1890′s and 1900′s. They were initially knitted with unwashed and undied wool. Both the natural lanolin from the virgin wool and the knitted patterns made for water resistant sweaters and as such : good alternatives to the previously used ganseys made of oiled wool died with indigo.

 These Aran sweaters slowly became some fashionable sportswear item during the 20′s and 30′s, and later reached its peak popularity in the 50s’ and 60′s worn by the likes of Grace Kelly and Steve McQueen.

——————————— Vareuse V1 ——————————

Vareuses are a style of fishermen smocks with a V neck. This style was typical of Brittany fishermen though I have seen depiction of Norwegian fishermen for example sporting this style of smocks on 1880s paintings too. While I couldn’t find substancial informations on their origins and date of appereance, vareuses seem to have been used at least as far as mid 19th century and were still worn as work wear up til the mid 20th. 

It is said that traditionally fishers wore different colors depending on their fishing style : yellow ones for those shellfish picking, rust colored ones for those using fish traps, red ones for oyster farmers and blue ones for those fishing in the open seas.

Fishermen smocks were oiled to be water repellant and worn on top of clothes and knitted garments to protect them from water and keep them relatively clean.

On this 1st version of the vareuse I’ve not put any clothing “underneath” to allow for warm weather and for combinations with accessory shirts or turtlenecks.

Similarly to the vareuse, the crewneck is a style of fishermen smocks. This style is traditionally associated with Cornwall, in the north west of England. Cornish crewneck smocks were used similarly to vareuses.

Once Cornelius returned from Britechester University, there was only one thing one his mind. His love, Blaire. They had only been able to communicate through letters during his time away, and he couldn't wait to see her again.

So, the first thing he did was to run to her house. This was all that had kept him going during the hard times at university. He was doing it all for her. Bettering himself and getting an education was an investment towards their future together. The only thing left now, was to ask her to marry him.

Cornelius had bought a ring for her on his journey home. It was his family, who had provided the money. They were more than happy to help him, and they all approved of Blaire.

Blaire, of course, was overjoyed with the proposal. There were no doubts in her mind, and she immediately accepted.

Part I: Exteriors | Part II

So after the long-awaited addition of Infants and Ceilings to the game, I realized I should probably update my one furnished build (so far) for these features. Unfortunately I got carried away again and just ended up revamping the whole build from the exterior, to each individual room + some new ones! This version has also been more extensively play-tested over time with all age groups and pets, with some extra fire hazard and accessibility issues addressed.

It still has all the original Lot Features:

Put more cat doors everywhere, they enjoy using the catdoors and portals for zoomies

Sprinklers, alarms, and fire resistant flooring have been added around fireplaces.

Fireplace in the tower was removed for it's propensity to set the roof on fire and become unreachable and inextinguishable

Tower room has been converted into a Collections display room instead, a la sims 3

Portal in the tower/Collections room also makes potential burglaries more threatening, but if you’re an occult you’re expected to employ practical DADA techniques to avert this

Updated Nursery and Playroom for Infants

Redid terrain paint. Twice. Why tf does it just vanish randomly sometimes

NEW Magic Bean Hunt! Stump is located where the magic realm portal used to be and beans are strategically hidden around the lot. I'd love to see how long it takes for you to catch them all!

Washbasins for rooms without bathrooms now look like washbasins and are actually useable, both on and off grid

Added privacy hedges and lattices to backyard and fenced in chicken run

Potions Crafting Table added to Spell-room

Crafters Supply Cabinet added to Kitchen

Pocketed pocket doors

Secret Cat Room color scheme updated and cat-approved artwork added

Another Cat room added to 3rd floor

Magic Well has been shrunk

Rooftop area outside 3rd floor Study converted into rooftop Pavilion with chessboard and painting easel

Jack-and-Jill bathroom added for two of the third floor bedrooms

Toilet room removed and bath added for staff washrooms, for an equal 2-toilet/2-bath arrangement, which means the build now has a total of 7 full baths, and 8 toilets.

More crafting tables (fizz machine and candle maker) added to Staff Lounge

Yoga/Meditation Balcony for staff above greenhouse

Small telescope added to rooftop outside tower room’s new 2nd door

Garden lights around yard configured for power + off grid lighting

‘Bike racks’ added by front gate

New Library shelves seem to allow sims to retrieve books but not put them back. However this is actually a feature, not a bug, since now you can put the books back yourself on on the right shelves and keep things organized 🙃

Should now be consistently able to feed and be eaten by the Cowplant

Homey trait replaced by Gnome lot trait since there is a proliferation of gnomes

Treat #2 : The Reformer

This treat is a set inspired by the Dress reform movement (a bit of the Aesthetic movement too, lots of overlap between these two) from the 1895 to the late 1900s.

Like the Aesthetic movement, the Reform dress movement dates back to the mid 1800's. It aimed at making women garments less constricting (for reasons varying from praticality, political leanings, supposed health downsides of corsets...). It was linked to feminism especially at the start and gave birth to the bloomers in 1851 for example.

Reform dress usually involved making it so that the main weight of the clothing would be carried by the shoulders and torso instead of solely the waist and thus get rid of the corset and masses of underskirts, to establish a "more practical type of dress that would facilitate a physical and productive life". This resulted most times in flowy dress, usually tea gowns. Like previously mentionned there's a big overlap between reform and aesthetic dresses since the medieval and antique (and even sometimes regency) influences fited the less structured reform dress silhouette of the late 1800's / early 1900's.

Once again this type of clothing wasn't well considered by the society at large, it took hold in specific artistic spheres such as the one surrounding the Wiener Werksträtte (a viennese artist association of which Emilie Flöge was a part of, the artwork is truly fascinating and very influencial look it up !).

This type of dress was so unconventional that apparently, the painter Henri de Toulouse Lautrec (who might I add painted prostitutes and such on the daily) was scandalised by Maria Sèthe Van de Velde's appearance when she welcomed him in a tea gown (see the blue tea gown below for reference) which he mistook for a dressing gown. I feel like this little anecdote helps to put things into perspective.

Not long after Carrie had left, it was Henry’s turn to begin his own venture into adulthood. With the blowing of candles, he turned eighteen – no longer the small, shy boy he once was, but an eager young man ready to experience the world and all it had to offer.

As Mr. Clayden had advised him, he wasted no time in sending in an application to the University of Britechester. His former teacher had been happy to give him a letter of reference, and Henry had also taken the liberty to send in a few samples of his writing to further boost his chances of being accepted.

All that was left to do was wait...

Friday, 1908 Dear Journal,

Today started early with Mama rousing me and Pa before the sun for Si's wedding. Si, true to form, seemed uninterested, bored even, as we made our way to the church yard.

Despite a soggy autumn, today turned unexpectedly pleasant. Clear skies, a welcome break from the week's thunderstorms. However, I think Ma is stressed, she kept nagging about walking with my skirt up to avoid dragging it through the mud....

The ceremony was small, Only Josephine's parents and Jackson with his fancy wife, bothered to show. I tried my best to focus on Mama's words from yesterday, And I could see why Jackson favored her.

Skinny, porcelain pale, dripping in expensive jewelry....everything I am not. However, as Josephine graced us with her entrance, any inkling of comparison vanished.

Radiance enveloped her, surpassing the boundaries of mere beauty. She embodied something ethereal. A sunlight aura surrounded her, and I found myself akin to a sunflower, unable to avert my gaze.

Even Si seemed genuinely happy, I saw him smile from ear to ear, he clasped her soft delicate hands, and caressed her cheek.

It was a sight to see, physical or emotional affection have never been his forte, not even in our childhood.

He was initially furious with Pa over the prospect of marrying Josephine. I remember his enraged shouts, echoing from the parlor.

Confidentially, Journal, I've noticed his practiced performance of donning the façade of a gentleman and a devoted son, particularly when in Mr. Coombes' presence.

Whether genuine or an act, my earnest prayer is for him to treat Josephine with the respect she deserves. I hold a genuine fondness for her, and I welcome her warmly into our family.

Just when they thought Peter would recover, he took a turn for the worse, and Rebecca had to consider the possibility that she and her husband would not grow old together. Nearly 32 years they had been married. They had raised four children. And now one of them was dead and another ill with the same sickness killing Peter. Dr. Ingalls had told her all she could do now was make him comfortable as he died. The thought was heart-wrenching. 

“My… my father died in the exact same spot,” Peter wheezed. “I was where you were, kneeling while my mother held his hand.”

Rebecca sniffled. “I remember. I felt so helpless, standing in the corner and watching. I still feel helpless.”

“To think I could have been a Duke. And you a duchess. I would have loved to see you decked out in fancy pearls and beautiful dresses.”

“You’ve made me happier than any jewel or coin would.”

“I wish we would have made it to our 32nd anniversary,” he coughed. 

Tears pooled in her eyes. “Oh, Peter,” she whimpered. “What am I to do without you?”

“You’ll be fine, my darling. You won’t need to worry about fiances, and once Byron becomes Duke, you’ll be living in only the finest houses.”

“If he doesn’t manage to get out of it. If anyone could, it would be him.”

“Stubborn.” He smiled sadly. “Like me.”

He coughed again. “Rebecca?”

“Yes, darling?”

“I don’t want to die.”

Tears escaped her eyes. “I don’t want you to die either.”

He sighed and closed his eyes. His face had paled and yellowed, and she knew he was at death’s door. “Lie with me,” he whispered. “Do yo know how I wanted to die?”

“How?” She whisepred.

“Of old age. You and I would spend the day with our many grandchildren and after dinner and prayer, we would get in bed and pass away peacefully.”

More tears streamed down her face. “Peter.”

“Lie with me,” he repeated. “I want someone next to me as I die.”

Rebecca took her husband’s sickly hand and closed her eyes, listening to his shallow breathing until it completely stopped.
