Diet- Small mammals; Reptiles; Birds; Crustaceans; Fish

Cool Facts- Barred owls are masters of the night. During the day, they find a tree to shelter in as they sleep but once the sun sets, they set out on the wing. A special layer of their eyes acts like a mirror to take in more light, resulting in the barred owl appearing to have bright red eyeshine. The owl flies from perch to perch until they spot a snack. They launch from their branch and silently divebomb their prey, even plunging into several feet of snow to catch a burrowing vole. Barred owls can catch much larger prey compared to other daytime raptors due to the ratcheting system in their talons that constricts prey. Barred owls live in monogamous pairs and protect their territory from other owls. The couple will perform a duet of hooting to ward possible aggressors off.

James held up the beautifully wrapped gift that Regulus had just given him. His fingers shook slightly as he pulled on the silver ribbon. Carefully, he tore away the emerald green wrapping paper and watched the tiny glass orb fall out onto his lap. 

He picked it up and stared into the crystal clear glass. Nestled in the centre, frozen in time, was a single delicate blue forget me not.

“Sorry, it’s a stupid gift. I should have gotten you a new broom or something. It’s totally worthless.” Regulus rambled, clearly uncomfortable with James’s silence. 

James couldn’t stop looking at the flower. It brought back a memory. He’d given Regulus one the first time he’d flirted with him. Plucked it from the ground and tucked it into his curls. Regulus had frozen on the spot, gone beet red, called him an idiot and stormed off. He wondered if it was the same flower. It looked like it. 

He swallowed, trying to get rid of the lump in his throat. 

“Reg. It’s beautiful. No, truly.” He said when Regulus pulled a face. He reached out his empty hand and took Regulus’s into it. “This is worth more to me than anything else you could possibly have given me. I love it.” He tugged at Regulus’s hand, pulling him onto his lap. “Merry Christmas, Regulus. I love you.” He smiled up at him.

“Idiot,” Regulus smirked at him before cuddling into James’s chest. “Merry Christmas, James,” His muffled voice came from where his face was tucked against James’s neck. “I love you too.”

James had been wrong with what he’d said to Regulus. That right there. Those three words were worth more to him than anything in the world.
