i haven't been able to read much nct fic lately since writing/editing has been sucking up all my free time outside of work, and lately i've been reading more ateez (yunho just has a grip on me) but there are a few authors i'll drop everything for so here's the latest i've read from them/started reading but haven't gotten around to reviewing:

@sluttyten - you in my arms (haechan voyeurism/exhibitionism, haven't had the strength to read the last chapter but absolutely a work of art in terms of longform storytelling and mixed perspectives)

@ncteez - expert adversary (taeil office au, adorable read i went down a taeil hole lately for obvious reasons)

@jnnul - ric flair drip (jaehyun college au, this was so fun/fresh/flirty i enjoyed it even though campus/frat stuff is kind of low interest for me)

@yutaholic - there will be blood (yuta assassin/thriller vibes, beware major character death warning. luna writes villain!johnny the best, control is my all-time favorite fic in this vein, it haunts me, i will never be over it)

anything omegaverse, anything johnny, anything at all from @neopuppy, like that's the GOAT there, another godtier johnny fic that lives in my head is dumb, dumb dilf johnny with an age gap ilu i've been meaning to revisit

And there's this one cultivator in white that makes him feel - something else. Wei Wuxian is pretty sure he knows what that something is. Kay's comments: A super interesting AU in which Wei Wuxian returns from his three months in the Burial Mounds unable to remember the people around him while still remembering the feelings he has for them, which leads to some heart-breaking and some fun conclusions! Excerpt: There was only one problem. At first he’d thought the one in white was the one in purple’s friend – they spent an awful lot of time huddled together trying to think of ways to cure him – but eventually it’d been explained to him that they weren’t. In fact, the one in purple said that the one in white had previously hated him. Wei Wuxian didn’t like that. He had no idea why he didn’t like that, but he didn’t. “You’re not allowed to hate me,” he told the one in white, cornering him one day and poking him in the chest. “You’re not. You need to like me. You understand? You can’t dislike me.” The one in white blinked. He had very long eyelashes, and pretty golden irises beneath them. “I don’t dislike Wei Ying,” he said. “Good,” Wei Wuxian said, satisfied.

Maybe it’s Niall, he reasons to calm his storming heart. Maybe he’s not actually gone for the holidays yet, maybe Harry got the dates confused. Slowly, he holds his breath and pushes the kitchen door open. The first thing he sees make him jump, a wooden spoon held out like a sword. Once his brain processes the sight in front of him, it’s less the sword that gets him than who is attached to the wooden spoon.

“Harry,” the swordsmen speaks before Harry can, his voice low and steady though confusion laces each word.

Harry’s breath catches. Every string around his heart, all the protection he spent nine months building, rips out and tears open all at once as he says, “Hi Louis.”

AU: Nine months after they break up, a twist of fate brings Harry and Louis back together at Christmas.

Harry grimaced, “Just leave me here to die.”

Or they are both idiots and it takes a drunk Harry (with no brain to mouth filter) to get things going.

I missed out on a couple of months of recs because real life got a bit overwhelming, but here are some little bits of brilliance I've caught up on this month week🧡

🍂rounding third, sliding home by @thefreakandthehair - Injured pro baseballer Steve meets massage therapist Eddie and you KNOW how much of a sucker I am for "they found each other during a time of healing" so you KNOW I'm front row center for the emotional growth these two are bound to go on

🍂i know that you would want it, if i could sink my teeth into you by @hellsfireclub - VAMPIRE NANCY. need I say more??? I mean the inherent self imposed guilt of Nancy Wheeler lining up with needing to rely on someone else for her literal sustenance is SO!! and that person being robin is done so beautifully here, who has her own wants and who gets to learn how to want them aloud right alongside nancy

🍂heat wave by @fragilecapric0rnn - a slice of life out of the Old Friends universe (aka the When Harry Met Sally AU of my dreams), this one is just such a beautiful rendering of two guys who have found their way back into friendship and understanding and support and the steddie character dynamics are Unmatched I'm telling you!!!

🍂What Water Gives, It Takes Away by @hawkins83 - one of the most beautiful studies into how Nancy begins to find some sense of peace after the fighting is over, this one gives her the moment of reflection on the night she lost Barb (and in tandem a piece of herself) that I am always desperate to see for Nancy. beautifully explored from start to finish, I'm obsessed with this whole-heartedly

🍂if it wasn’t for bad luck i wouldn’t have luck at all by @kkpwnall - some truly lovely steddie here that made my heart go flutter, but the real crux of the thing is in getting to see how expertly Eddie's grief for losing his parents as a child manifests in this self-described curse which impacts every choice Eddie makes in his life from that point forward. I will never stop thinking about this concept, it's true and real to me now LIKE. help.

November 2023: AO3 Wrapped 🎁

A monthly roundup of *some* of my favorite fics of the year.

AITA for being "obsessed" with my childhood nemesis? by @rainstormradish (M, 4K)

I [24M] attended a small boarding school in the UK. There was a boy in my year, a couple of months younger than me, and he became my nemesis after we developed an intense rivalry. My friend [25F] told me recently that our dynamic was "weird back then" and that "it’s even weirder" that I still think about him today. She argued that I talk about him all the time, but I believe the amount I talk about him is reasonable. AITA?

What can I say that hasn’t been said? This is so brilliant and perfect. Another fic this year that does something so clever with its medium and still manages to not distract from its brilliant storytelling and character-driven heart.

Half Sick of Shadows by @starquestingfordrarry (E, 39K)

Harry and Draco have been sleeping together for months, and it's fine. It's enough for Harry. But when things finally start to feel like the more Harry's been hoping for, a strange tapestry project has him worrying he won't ever get the chance.

I have so many wonderful things to say about this, I was truly moved by the story and the writing absolutely destroyed me. This one already has such a special place in my heart. It’s also worth noting that my original caption was: “Draco is so hot 🥵”.

Draco has wanted Harry Potter for as long as he can remember. After he’s attacked and turned by a werewolf he’s placed in a halfway house while he undergoes rehabilitation and training. The fact that the house in question belongs to the object of his desire has all of Draco’s wants rushing to the surface. And it’s almost full moon, so his self-control is stretched paper thin.

*My* self-control was stretched paper thin by this, good god.

“Well,” Harry said gamely, once they’d managed to find the Leaky Cauldron – still under construction but mercifully open for business – and he’d turned up a few knuts from his pockets, enough to get them a room for the night, “it could be worse.” “Really,” Malfoy drawled. “We’re stuck in the 16th century, with no idea how we got here or how we might go about getting back – pray tell, Potter, how could this situation possibly be worse?”

Instant classic, incredibly fun to read.
