I know it is the fashion to say that most of recorded history is lies anyway. I am willing to believe that history is for the most part inaccurate and biased, but what is peculiar to our own age is the abandonment of the idea that history could be truthfully written. In the past people deliberately lied, or they unconsciously coloured what they wrote, or they struggled after the truth, well knowing that they must make many mistakes; but in each case they believed that ‘the facts’ existed and were more or less discoverable. And in practice there was always a considerable body of fact which would have been agreed to by almost everyone. If you look up the history of the last war in, for instance, the Encyclopaedia Britannica, you will find that a respectable amount of the material is drawn from German sources. A British and a German historian would disagree deeply on many things, even on fundamentals, but there would still be that body of, as it were, neutral fact on which neither would seriously challenge the other. It is just this common basis of agreement, with its implication that human beings are all one species of animal, that totalitarianism destroys. Nazi theory indeed specifically denies that such a thing as ‘the truth’ exists. There is, for instance, no such thing as ‘science’. There is only ‘German science’, ‘Jewish science’ etc. The implied objective of this line of thought is a nightmare world in which the Leader, or some ruling clique, controls not only the future but the past. If the Leader says of such and such an event, ‘It never happened’ – well, it never happened. If he says that two and two are five – well, two and two are five. This prospect frightens me much more than bombs – and after our experiences of the last few years that is not a frivolous statement.

But is it perhaps childish or morbid to terrify oneself with visions of a totalitarian future? Before writing off the totalitarian world as a nightmare that can’t come true, just remember that in 1925 the world of today would have seemed a nightmare that couldn’t come true. Against that shifting phantasmagoric world in which black may be white tomorrow and yesterday’s weather can be changed by decree, there are in reality only two safeguards. One is that however much you deny the truth, the truth goes on existing, as it were, behind your back, and you consequently can’t violate it in ways that impair military efficiency. The other is that so long as some parts of the earth remain unconquered, the liberal tradition can be kept alive.

(Decolonizing) Science Saturday 

This Saturday we are sharing some illustrations from our first edition copy of Wendy Makoons Geniusz’s book, Our Knowledge is Not Primitive: Decolonizing Botanical Anishinaabe Teachings. The botanical illustrations are provided by the author’s sister, Annmarie Geniusz. Published in 2009 by Syracuse University Press, the book is part of their series The Iroquois and Their Neighbors. Established by the press in 1975, the publication series’ primary scope is Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) scholarship, but it also focuses on uplifting the voice of Indigenous scholars’ work in contemplating their own culture. 

As an academic raised in the Anishinaabe culture, Geniusz is particularly well suited to critically examine the Western scientific lens through which Indigenous botanical knowledge is often presented in the Academy. Genuisz, who got her undergraduate degree here at UWM, is the former director of the American Indian Studies program at University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, and currently teaches Ojibwe language there.

This is why I don't agree with blanket statements like "humanity is a cancer upon the Earth". The majority of environmental destruction has been perpetrated by western countries over the past few centuries of colonialism and industrialization, and we are the primary source of ongoing demand for resources like timber and fossil fuels. Blaming all of humanity as a whole is short-sighted, to say the very least.

While indigenous people are not a monolithic entity and each community has their own ethics regarding the land, we are seeing increasingly that when indigenous land managers are in charge, the result is a much more sustainable conservation of the land and its resources. The indigenous peoples of the Amazon have been caring for these places for thousands of years, and allowing them to continue those relationships is having a positive effect overall.

Excerpt from Wallace's book The Malay Archipelago p. 59: “One of the most curious and interesting reptiles which I met with in Borneo was a large tree-frog, which was brought me by one of the Chinese workmen. He assured me that he had seen it come down, in a slanting direction, from a high tree, as if it flew."

And that's why it's better to say he was the first to scientifically describe a flying frog and not say he "discovered" it...and surely the Chinese worker who brought it to him wasn't the first to see one in action either, local Indigenous people likely knew about them for ages.

ALEISTER CROWLEY IS EVIL

preface so I'm posting this 2 my main blog hoping it gets more traction &more ppl see it but if yall r interested in topics about the occult/spirituality/witchcraft/Judaism I have a side blog for that : @selfborn .. back 2 the regularly scheduled post..

I remember being a young witch new to my craft and hearing about the "prophet" aleister Crowley. Everyone with internet access, at some point, will see his works being referenced, his "artistic" photographs being used in many occult YouTube series, even going as far as to use his writings as sources for new age demonology or kabbalah which as a Jewish witch irks me to no end but that is mostly beside the point: Aleister Crowley was an evil, mentally unstable man that commited many crimes including but not limited to:

literal human sacrifice, rvpe, and child abuse.

He committed these crimes during his evil "rituals". Many victims were forgotten or not investigated because, as we have seen many times: killers target vulnerable and socially ostracized groups & law enforcement doesn't care when marginalized people are abused or killed.

He was involved with other powerful people and was a member of the masonic temple Ordo Templi Orientis along with John "Jack" Parsons one of the founding members of JPL, a branch of NASA that operates on stolen indigenous Hahamog-na1 land literally within walking distance from me. they conducted these evil "rituals" at the site also at estates in pasadena.

I have seen first hand the effects that they& their associate government organizations have had on the nature in the Arroyo Seco basin & the san Gabriel mountains, I watched them clear out forests and I watched the rivers around the facility turn grey and dry up, whole fenced off areas where they dig for G-D knows what and disrupt the wildlife &the structural integrity of the mountains. And I had to watch the effects& consequences of pollution on my community, we are, mostly, poor, black,brown&mixed, new families with young children who probably cannot afford to support themselves in the more gentrified urban areas, our school district is getting progressively worse, there's homeless, disabled and at risk youth and elders, city infrastructure issues..

and where is our funding, resources, and man-power going? To JPL, NASA, and the LAPD& local sheriff's. This is environmental racism and class war. We are getting thrown under the bus in the name of false scientific "progress".

I am so, so, tired of seeing this evil pigs face plastered on edgy "occult" blogs who are too lazy to research the people that they idolize. Aleister Crowley was nothing more than a government masonic shill, a delusional violent man that became high on the power& protection he believed he was awarded from other powerful privileged white men. And I'm tired of everyone getting on their knees open-mouthed for NASA &JPL reposting their cgi rendered composite images of black holes &dark matter for their aesthetic UwU while my community has to suffer for you to receive those pretty pictures. I hope it's fucking worth it.

I'm putting my personal shit out into the wind hoping someone will see it, I don't care if someone doesn't believe me or if I ruffle space nerds feathers or if I get targeted because I've been targeted and followed on the street before, I'm already at risk for speaking out and also because of my life's circumstances, and I don't care. This is important to me.

Knowledge is Power.

The Haida have become the masters of the North Pacific, transporting goods along the west coast of North America, as well as making the 6-8 week long trek in the summers across to the Yellow Sea Alliance (YSA). They have seen great success via combining algae diesel fuelled engines with junk rigged sails on a two mast schooner type ship. They are the main mover of goods and people from Port Baja (the southern most point the Haida bother to go), up to Seattle Bay, then Haida Gwaii and Terace serves as the central hub. Then will up to Sugpiaq, then to Adak (which serves as the main rest stop between Asia and North America), out to Yelizovo, and finally to Hokkaido.

Nunangat controls Sugpiaq and, in turn, transports goods along the northwest passage, down the east coast and even out to Iceland connecting Europe to the Americas. From Hokkaido, the YSA moves goods southward and out to India, and from Yelizovo, ancient Russian infrastructure takes tribal caravans deep into the Eurasian continent. As such, the Haida serve a vital role in what has been called "The Great World Ring," a trade road moving things across the entire globe. Many people have managed to circumnavigate the globe just by moving from trade ship to trade ship to caravan to trade ship. While perhaps the world isn't as prosperous as before The Flood Wars, it does not mean there is no global community.

I’m in New Zealand, climax to my antipodean speaking tour, where I walked headlong into a raging controversy. Jacinda Ardern’s government implemented a ludicrous policy, spawned by Chris Hipkins’s Ministry of Education before he became prime minister. Science classes are to be taught that Māori ‘Ways of Knowing’ (Mātauranga Māori) have equal standing with ‘western’ science. Not surprisingly, this adolescent virtue-signalling horrified New Zealand’s grown-up scientists and scholars. Seven of them wrote to the Listener magazine. Three who were fellows of the NZ Royal Society were threatened with an inquisitorial investigation. Two of these, including the distinguished medical scientist Garth Cooper, himself of Māori descent, resigned (the third unfortunately died). I was delighted to meet Professor Cooper for lunch, with others of the seven. His resignation letter cited the society’s failure to support science against its denigration as ‘a western European invention’. He was affronted, too, by a complaint (not endorsed by the NZRS) that ‘to insist Māori children learn to read is an act of colonisation’. Is there an implication here – condescending, if not downright racist – that ‘indigenous’ children need separate, special treatment?

Perhaps the most disagreeable aspect of this sorry affair is the climate of fear. We who don’t have a career to lose should speak out in defence of those who do. The magnificent seven are branded heretics by a nastily zealous new religion, a witch-hunt that recalls the false accusations against J.K. Rowling and Kathleen Stock. Professor Kendall Clements was removed from teaching evolution at the University of Auckland, after the School of Biological Sciences Putaiao Committee submitted the following recommendation: ‘We do not feel that either Kendall or Garth should be put in front of students as teachers. This is not safe for students…’ Not safe? Who are these cringing little wimps whose ‘safety’ requires protection against free speech? What on earth do they think a university is for?

To grasp government intentions requires a little work, because every third word of the relevant documents is in Māori. Since only 2 per cent of New Zealanders (and only 5 per cent of Māoris) speak that language, this again looks like self-righteous virtue-signalling, bending a knee to that modish version of Original Sin which is white guilt. Mātauranga Māori includes valuable tips on edible fungi, star navigation and species conservation (pity the moas were all eaten). Unfortunately it is deeply invested in vitalism. New Zealand children will be taught the true wonder of DNA, while being simultaneously confused by the doctrine that all life throbs with a vital force conferred by the Earth Mother and the Sky Father. Origin myths are haunting and poetic, but they belong elsewhere in the curriculum. The very phrase ‘western’ science buys into the ‘relativist’ notion that evolution and big bang cosmology are just the origin myth of white western men, a narrative whose hegemony over ‘indigenous’ alternatives stems from nothing better than political power. This is pernicious nonsense. Science belongs to all humanity. It is humanity’s proud best shot at discovering the truth about the real world.

My speeches in Auckland and Wellington were warmly applauded, though one woman yelled a protest. She was politely invited to participate, but she chose to walk out instead. I truthfully said that, when asked my favourite country, I invariably choose New Zealand. Citing the legacy of Ernest Rutherford, the greatest experimental physicist since Faraday, I begged my audiences to reach out to their MPs in support of New Zealand science. The true reason science is more than an origin myth is that it stands on evidence: massively documented evidence, double blind trials, peer review, quantitative predictions precisely verified in labs around the world. Science reads the billion-word DNA book of life itself. Science eradicates smallpox and polio. Science navigates to Pluto or a tiny comet. Science almost certainly saved your life. Science works.

Postscript on the flight out: Air New Zealand think it a cute idea to invoke Māori gods in their safety briefing. Imagine if British Airways announced that their planes are kept aloft by the Holy Ghost in equal partnership with Bernoulli’s Principle and Newton’s First Law. Science explains. It lightens our darkness. Science is the poetry of reality. It belongs to all humanity. Kia Ora!

Marks of growth as a person and practitioner in witchcraft spaces:

-not feeling the need to constantly correct others

-knowing when and how to offer a dissenting viewpoint

-being content to disagree without engaging in debate

-fact-checking information before passing it along or incorporating it into your practice

-questioning your assumptions and decolonizing your thinking

-understanding that no two practices are the same and that the experiences and opinions of others do not need to govern your path

-understanding that practices not your own or contrary to your own can still be valid

-being able to describe your current beliefs without putting down others or defaulting to discussions about religious trauma

-focusing on comprehension, learning, and exploration rather than consumption

-understanding that "witch" is a gender neutral term and that anyone can be a witch if they choose to

-understanding that safety is more important than visibility

-understanding that magical practice does not have to be constant

-Developing personal beliefs and practices that may align with existing traditions but may not match them precisely

-Developing a reliable bullshit detector and employing it regularly

-Diminished desire for constant validation from outside sources as to whether you're "doing it right"

-diminished desire to overshare or aestheticize your practices, instead focusing on what works for you rather than what looks pretty enough for social media

-diminished desire to Do All The Things At Once and instead focusing on the areas where you are comfortable / interested and taking things at a reasonable pace

-being aware of the problems in the community and doing your best to not contribute to them

-being aware of the New Age pipeline and staying out of it as much as possible

-embracing science and history and common sense alongside magical learning and spiritual beliefs (if you have them)

Boozhoo, I'm an indigenous American who loves the phrase "decolonization is not a metaphor" as an easy way to refer to laws and social changes to return sovereignty to indigenous peoples, but it's getting harder and harder to see that phrase (and other things relating to decolonization) be weaponized against Jewish people.

I've seen a lot of antisemitic nonsense from non-Native people, twisting around decolonization efforts in the Americas to justify violence against Jewish and Israeli people, but I've also seen it coming from other Native people who should KNOW better than to be spreading hateful lies like that. Seeing other Natives spread racist and antisemitic denials of Jewish connection to the Levant and Jerusalem especially, while pushing race science that hurts ALL indigenous people, is terrifying.

I believe in Palestinian liberation and the end of the violence in Gaza. I also believe that Jewish people deserve to live on their ancestral homeland safely if they so choose and that they should be able to live in the rest of the world without the threat of antisemitic violence. These things are not mutually exclusive.

It's difficult to see people of any indigeneity-- Palestinian, Jewish, Anishinaabe, hell, even Ukrainian-- acting like we don't all share the same struggle against colonialism, coloniality, and imperialism. Our struggles are one struggle because of our differences, not despite them, because our struggle is against those who would force us to accept assimilation and homogeneity. The fact that some of us can't see that? It's the result of colonial tactics.

One of the things that drove me to embrace Critical Theory and study sociology, instead of just "being a leftist", was that every year I saw people say:

"Fuck Christopher Columbus! Happy Indigenous People's Day!"

And the order of those phrases means everything to me. It's so clear that many people value the destruction of what they hate before they value the protection of those they purport to respect. You see this again with people who say "Fuck Nazis!" but never follow up with "Protect Jews". For many, it's not actually ever been about decolonization. It's simply been an excuse to justify violence against the forms of colonialism that negatively affect them.

I wish you peace and safety, חבר. In both the dark times of today and the dark times of the future. Your people and mine have both survived what was thought to be the impossible. Both of our people will live to see the future, despite whatever odds we may encounter.
