Perhaps too broad a question but I’ve moved into a new place and I don’t know where to begin with decorating. The actual features of the space are uninspiring, there’s some dark brown leather sofas I’m unsure of how to style etc, where do I start!
Hm. Okay so if you have no obvious architectural features to work with, then I would start with making some. I'm assuming this is a rental, so that means you'll have to use furniture. This got long so under the cut...
My absolute favorite thing to do with a meh space is make a wall of bookcases - Ikea Billy's in a variety of widths + an interesting combination of shelves (mix up the heights and mix glass and wood) can look amazing. Don't forget the lighting - buy the super thin wire down lights (from ikea or Amazon or elsewhere) and stick them in the top of each bookcase (you can slip the wire between the back and the frame), add lamps and spotlights actually in the bookcase (you'll have to cut holes in the back of the bookcases to get the plug through but an exacto knife will sort you out, just do your cutting before you attach the back). Put all the lights into one multi plug and put that into a smart plug and voila, you've got an amazing feature that you can pack up and take with you. Below is my old bookshelf wall, ignore the mess on the table.

Other ideas: get some statement furniture, like a coffee table or vintage sideboard or something and make that the feature. Set up the room so that piece is where your attention is drawn. You can also do a gallery wall - there's a million tutorials online but that's a really easy way to fill space and upgrade a bland area. If you have good windows, make them more of a statement with curtains - you can get reasonably priced ones from ikea and Etsy. Make sure to put the rod close to the ceiling and ideally get curtains long enough to touch the floor, it's an instant way to make your ceilings look higher. Do NOT cover the windows with the curtains, they should hang to the side to make the window appear larger.
But my overall, biggest piece of advice: to avoid the sad, made.com showroom effect, you've got to mix vintage and modern. Get out to auction houses, antique stores, car boot sales, Etsy, eBay, Facebook marketplace, etc and get hunting. This is by far the easiest and most versatile way to solve your problem - when your furniture has personality, it can do a lot of heavy lifting for bland features. Find a piece you love and let that inspire the space for you. For me, it was my French 1930s coffee table with the swan legs (an Etsy find). That set the tone for the whole room (1930s! Feminine! Frivolous!).
Good luck, this is going to be fun! (Below, a photo of the coffee table for posterity).

catch me googling "how to partake in the butch tradition of having a lanyard/ring of keys clipped to your belt when you don't have a job or a car and so most of the things on your lanyard are just decorative keychains"

FOOL MASK (GITM BY @venomous-qwille)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Handbuilt porcelain with slip, overglaze, glaze, and gold lustre accents. Paint and lacquer detailing added post fire. Handsewn fool's cap and bells added post fire.
This mask is a part of a (loosely connected) mask series, all hand-built and fired using a range of different temperatures and techniques.
My favourite mask to date, Fool from Ghost in the Machine by the wonderful @venomous-qwille !! GITM is absolutely incredible and I cannot put into words eloquently how much I adore it and Fool so instead I made this mask! Hi!
My word was this mask a struggle to make. The mask itself is entirely one piece, and entirely porcelain!! That's right, those long thin rays are solid porcelain!! The eyes and tips of the blades are done in 22 carat gold lustre. All colouring save for the black and the satin sections of darker red on the face were done with only slips and underglazes. The red colour was correct without the paint, but I thought a contrast from the rest of the gloss would look nice :)
Made to scale, the mask measures 50.8x60.96cm without the hat, and 50.8x116.84cm with it! (20x24in without hat, 20x46in including hat). He is Large, but turned out absolutely lovely and I send my many many thanks to the kiln gods for producing him unscathed.

Not the original person who asked about decorating a rental but I did find your answer super useful! I’m moving into my own flat without housemates for the first time next week and am struggling to know where to spend and where to save on furniture - I’ve inherited a lot of Ikea stuff which is broadly serviceable but what are the key pieces I should upgrade to have a big impact without being able to replace everything?
Glad you found it helpful! And what a great question. In my opinion, the best way is to go slowly and replace as you go. Some things might stay Ikea (I still have an ikea couch! but I did add extra stuffing to make it fluffier) and that's totally fine. If you go slow, start with pieces that really speak to you, then it's less pressure than trying to design (and pay for) everything at once.
I tend to think of a whole room budget vs individual pieces. So I might say I'm willing to spend, say, £1000 on the family room and so by the time I had my table, my green chair, and the painting above my fireplace, that was a decent chunk of that gone, hence the Ikea sofa (and the lack of Frame TV, rip). But I know I'll get to replacing what I need/want to over time, so it's not a huge deal.
For me personally, I think nice sofas are insanely expensive and not worth it - they wear down, they get stained, and I don't think spending a load is worth it when you're on a budget. But! You could love sofa napping (or be less messy than me) and it might be a priority item for you. Similarly, I'm a spiller so a relatively cheap washable rug made more sense for me than a £££ old Persian or something. That makes it hard to generalize, you've got to decide what your priorities are. And it depends on the room - in my living room, the coffee table is right in the center of everything so it has a lot of visual impact, hence why I was happy to spend more on it. But if your coffee table is going to be in a corner, maybe it's not worth the expense!
My other piece of advice is that you can score deals on nice things if you're willing to put in a bit more effort / DIY. For example, I got an old marble cafe-style table for my kitchen from eBay - it had been sitting in someone's garden for years and I needed to scrape / repaint the legs and do some stain removing and polishing on the top, but it now looks really good! And for like, literally a 1/10th of what a new one would have cost me. Similarly, there was this gorgeous Oliver Bonas dressing table I wanted but I was at the end of my budget so I got a cheap dressing table on eBay in a similar shape and spray painted it! DIY is fun and easy and an absolute budget saviour.
Hope that's helpful! Let me know if you have any questions!

Now, this is different- a skeleton sewing machine for your goth or Halloween decor. I couldn't find it on Google, but I have been told that it's been seen at JoAnn Fabrics.
