Tile
Go into any institutional building, a school, or a hospital or such and you’ll see that they tend to use similar commercial tile. It’s usually a white with grey flecks or maybe a mottled white with some glittery bits. It’s not pretty but it is inexpensive and wears like iron. I mean I’ve seen floors that were fifty or sixty years old that look like new. Not good mind you, they never looked good, they just don’t show any wear.
So it’s a bit odd to point out the other thing you’ll see, occasional replaced tiles. Not a pattern just one tile a bit off center in the room that doesn’t quite match. I mean the floor must have been fifteen or twenty years old when somebody accidentally dropped something, an engine block, a grenade, something that could actually damage the indestructible commercial tile. It broke exactly one tile and they tried but couldn’t quite match it. So the off colour square remains as the only evidence of Mr. Johnston’s accident with the nailgun back in 1998.
But what I really respect are the places where the replacement tile really doesn’t match at all. I mean it’s not even close. You just know that somebody did something stupid and when maintenance came up they looked at the white floor and just said, “F**k it they’re getting one of the moss green ones I got in the back.” I mean you gotta respect someone who is willing to put any aesthetic sense aside and just get the job done. To just use something they had left over from something else no matter what it looks like. You can see these tiles, green ones, brown ones, blue ones, even pink or yellow in random spots in rooms. They don’t match anything in the room, maybe in the whole city, but that’s the way it is.
It makes me wonder though, if these were extras, and I can’t imagine they’d special order these awful colours just for the repair, what were they extra from? Are there actually rooms in schools where the floor is covered in a gastly green commercial tile? Maybe a checkerboard of brick red, moss green, and s**t brown? I mean seriously were the decaying meat pink tiles, and stale urine yellow ones used in a room somewhere?
Or maybe there is an Isle of Misfit Tiles right next to the Isle of Misfit Toys. Maybe a whole archipelago of misfit islands.

The Kim k home decor line is truly a perfect example of the absolute gal and audacity of rich untalented people’s ability to try and scam people with the most overpriced basic unimpressive and uninspired products I’ve ever witnessed
