Today’s mix:
Laid in Full by M-Boogie 1999 Hip Hop / Turntablism
Excellent late 90s hip hop mixtape here from L.A.'s M-Boogie that blends together a handful of different contemporaneous underground strains: a lot of material from the great ABB label, who were known for a stripped-down brand of boom bappin' beats and who had Cali heroes Dilated Peoples, Rasco, and Planet Asia all on their roster; gritty, hardcore New York street raps from the likes of the D.I T.C. crew (Dignified Soldiers) and Missin' Linx, the latter of whom liberally sampled David McCallum's "The Edge" right before Dr. Dre ended up using the same exact samples for "The Next Episode" ; a touch of the abstract from Kool Keith and his peers Kutmasta Kurt and Motion Man; and a wealth of insanely good turntable interludes from some of the world's greatest cut-and-scratch hip hop DJs. Oh, and there's Mos Def paired with N'Dea Davenport (former frontwoman of acid jazz band The Brand New Heavies) performing over what sounds like a chilly J Dilla production. Fantastic tune there.
Kinda runs out of steam towards the end, but it's pure, solid rap gold up until that point. Really great showcase of different scenes and styles from hip hop's underground in '99.
