It's Time For Another Round of World: Guess whether this USian is fucking with you!
Tell me if you think this is true. Other folks from the US, don't spoil it!:
In some, but not all universities in the United States, there are numerous cults. Some cults are allied with each other. Some are vicious foes and will taunt one another on sight. Many signal to each other with hand gestures and symbols from a language they most likely don't speak.
To join one of these cults, you have to allow yourself to be bullied and tormented, and they still might reject you! And in some universities, not being in one of these cults makes it difficult to have any friends at all.
If you do get to be in the cult, members of your cult—at your university, at other universities, and graduates young and old—will prioritize supporting you over other people in certain instances, even if they don't know you personally. Older cult members might even choose you for a job over someone who is not part of their cult, or *gasp* a rival cult.
Universities allow these cults to recruit and operate openly. Some even give cult members nicer housing or other bonuses. Even when there is a scandal involving these cults, universities will sometimes excuse their behavior.

One of the first attempts I made on using any form of Machine Learning was a simple Neural Style Transfer with Satellite images. It is a very straightforward way of testing the abilities of a Neural Network regarding feature recognition. This series that you see below tested the abilities of Diffusion Models such as Midjourney to construct urban textures based on text imput. In particular using V4 of Midjourney. Every time a new version comes out, it is one of the first tests I do. I always thought it is amusing that Midjourney has 'trouble' recreating the orthogonal view from space. Either there are not a lot of satellite images in the dataset, or the weights in Midjourney are set to prefer spatial representations instead of orthogonal ones. Let me know your thoughts. The last image in the series below was created in 2018 using Neural Style Transfer. #midjourneyai #midjourneyart #midjourney #neural_architecture #neuralarchitecture #artificialintelligence #artificial_intelligence #estrangement #defamiliarization #ostranenie #newparadigm #machinelearning #diffusion_model #disco_difussion #stablediffusion #aiarchitects #posthuman #aiarchitecture #archinect #archilover #archdaily #midjourneyarchitecture #arch2o (at Ann Arbor, Michigan) https://www.instagram.com/p/CkuERc_O5kL/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A common stone can still reveal Something not stone, not seen, yet real. What may a common stone conceal?
-Robert Francis, “Nothing Is Far”
Art exists that one may recover the sensation of life; it exists to make one feel things, to make the stone stony.

A Little Bit of Writing (It’s been a while)
Deconstructed Knuckle Sandwich
The impact ricochets up the arm when my curled knuckles become an unstoppable force for someone else's immovable face. It drives the fingernails into the tender flesh of the palm deeply enough to part the epidermis and slick the fingertips with blood, if the owner of said hand is unfortunate enough to wear their nails long.
Like I do.
Held correctly, the knuckles flatten against the intended target, compressing bones between their connective tissue and carrying the force back like a ten car freeway pileup through the hand, the wrist, and all the way through the shoulder. Even distributing the impact force across the whole of the knuckle face, such a stop inflames the knuckle tissue, bursting capillaries like a mallet through a watermelon. The surrounding tissue panics and grabs all the water it can find, growing to hold the bones and tendons rigid in case they've been injured in their reckless forward flight.
A week from now, I will probably still favor and bandage that hand.
Years of combat instruction and holding my own against brothers has made my thumb instinctively curl around the exterior of my fingers rather than nested unsafely in their embrace. The former keeps it safely out of the way, the latter places bilateral force on the thumb joint, ripping the connecting tissue or causing the metacarpal to snap on impact. That is a mistake you only make once.
The man who threatened to mug me reels back from the punch, striking the metal pole in the aisle of the train. He falls to the train floor, winces, and eyes me warily. I can see my reflection in his pupils, standing braced and square, fists up and ready should he decide discretion isn't the better part of valor.
“Pioneer Square.” The train voice chirrups in the otherwise empty car. “Doors to your left.”
He scrambles up and out the doors.
“The doors are closing.” The train voice continues.
I shake out my hand, sit, and wait for the swelling to set in.

These creatures used to have these devices all over the place. They were believed to be alive or at least descended from life as evidenced by parts of the objects being cognate to body parts. The position of the main "hand" indicated the observance of a particular 2 minute stretch within a half-day. There were 360 such stretches within a half-day which they called "degrees". Curiously they believed time to be related to the rate of the motion of elemental particles, as they reasoned sufficient to use the same unit of measurement for both. This indicates they had a deep understanding of molecular physics way before they became a space faring race.

Depicting Abuse in Fiction
This week I read an essay by Christopher Noël titled “Keeping Open the Wounds of Possibility: The Marvelous, the Uncanny, and the Fantastic in Fiction.” It was an approachable, hands-on review of ideas from the Russian Formalists (especially defamiliarization) and Wolfgang Iser (especially the reader and author co-creating the text). But I liked it most for helping me clarify some of my…
