enough of u supported me in my half asleep post asking about fic recs the other day so I am providing. If you want a deep look into my inner psyche this is also the list for that hehe. I tried to be strict about only including my absolute MUST READ fics that I adore and have read and reread and reread again multiple times. Also these will be mostly ExR, to no one's surprise. I don’t read as much fic as I used to but one of my fave ways to find fics that are well-suited to my taste is to trawl the ao3 bookmarks of authors I like! OR look at the bookmarks of my favorite fics, and go to the profiles of the people who left the most exuberant bookmarks.

Also if it’s post-canon you’re hunting, may I suggest checking out the @aftgthenandnow fest collection if you haven’t already 👀 most of the fics are shorter, but there’s TONS and they’re all canonverse (and very good!!)

What I like most about their writing is that they have this ability to pain the world they wrote like a picture. With these lines that leave me sitting in awe

i 100% agree about the loads of fantastic authors in this fandom. i wanted to mention 2: s6115 - i love how they get to the absolute heart of the characters and express their emotions, and they also balance it with humor very well H_Belle - i would call their writing…. snappy? idk if it's the right word but they keep the writing tight and moving and intriguing

For 10: anything by ScarlettStorm, her writing has a really solid voice! Also paired wings soaring by typefortydeductions (E, 33k, WangXian, Modern, slice of life, domestic bliss, angst, fluff, smut, hurt/Comfort, kissing, bdsm, artist WWX, poetry translator LWJ, slight somnophilia) has a very unique and wonderful narrative style.

I would recommend ScarlettStorm, who has great found families and depth of character and a particular breezy style I like. Also Ariaste, who has a similar style and excels at getting the most out of a premise. Also Sami, in particular the Paper Moon series because of her thoughtfulness about character development and how that drives the plot and the neat way she weaves the story together and has excellent narrative consistency. One more - hansbekhart is a tremendously skilled writer who, like orange_crushed (recced above), can just hit you with a brick of emotions. Highly recommend both authors as those who can drag deep, vast emotions out of you and leave you feeling as if you're a different person after you've read their fic. In particular, I suggest Roots Grow Riotous by hansbekhart.

for an example of fantastic writing, Twelve Moons and a Fortnight series by stiltonbasket on ao3 is EXCELLENT (intricate layered worldbuilding in vast timeline, awesome imagery and characterizations and build towards pivotal scenes). Also I personally love Cradle by dragonesque (one of best/fav show down diss scenes, politics) & The Murder of Crows by cerbykerby; to name a few

Say More by lettered (E, 55k, WIP, WangXian, Modern AU, Pining, Mutual Pining, Slow Burn, non-graphic drug use, non-graphic withdrawal, Drug Addiction, one suicidal thought, negative thought, wwx struggles with Mandarin and feeling connected to Chinese culture, this is not a large plot point but bears mention, Compulsory Heterosexuality, wwx kisses a girl, Sexuality Crisis, Gay Panic, some gender confusion and questions without serious gender questioning, incorrect definition of omnisexuality, Open Relationships, Masochistic Fantasies, non-graphic sadomascochistic realities, humiliation fantasies, Submission Fantasies, some D/s realities, one condomless blowjob, suggestions of some unhealthy co-dependence, Possessive Behavior, Slight Consensual Non-Consent, Frottage) For the itmf ask about works with unique voices I can happily recommend lettered's "say more", currently a wip. I don’t usually read WIPs, because I’m the kind of person who gets really heartbroken if I get attached and then the fic is abandoned. But every so often an author I trust or a summary I just can’t resist tempts me to take a chance—and it works out! I’ve recced this one before, and it hasn’t let me down since then. A time-traveling Draco happens upon 7-year-old Harry Potter at Privet Drive and can’t help rescuing him, royally fucking up the timeline and his own life in the future in the process. You might be leery of a fic where Draco ends up raising the kid version of the guy who—as an adult—he falls in love with – I worried about that, too, but the author somehow manages to keep that from being weird, which is pretty impressive. Buckle up for this one, because it’s a wild ride with lots of twists and cliffhangers!

true gold fears no fire by @defractum (CQL/MDZS, Wangxian, palace AU)

Many MDZS/CQL authors have attempted palace AUs (probably after watching Nirvana in Fire), but so far, this is the only one I’ve read that’s succeeded—and hot damn. It’s so good. In which LWJ, recently made Emperor of China and still mourning the man he knew as Wei Ying, makes an arranged marriage to one “Jiang Wuxian.” He consigns his new spouse to the Empress’s palace without bothering to look at his face—and Wei Ying, stir-crazy in said palace, then decides to sneak around the Forbidden City at night in disguise, where he is apprehended by Lan Wangji on the rooftops by moonlight. The perfect mix of plot, character, and romance, with a delicious dash of identity porn and a tasty conspiracy. I swooned and you will, too!

Truth Will Out (when caught on video) - End_OTW_Racism! by kizukatana (CQL/MDZS, Wangxian, modern cultivation AU)

This is a modern AU where WWX is kicked out of the Jiang Sect and stripped of (most of) his core after being blamed for Jiang Fengmian’s death on a group night hunt; he finds a home in Caiyi Town with Wen Qing and her family and starts supporting himself with a nighthunting YouTube channel, after not one but two meet-uglys with LWJ. 😂 The author’s summary references an event that, 140K in, still has not happened, so don’t rely too much on that – the story focuses a lot more on WWX building a new life with his channel and his inventions, and on his growing relationship with LWJ. The modern cultivation worldbuilding is great, and you’ll love the star turns by Wen-popo as WWX’s cutthroat business manager and NHS as the designer who supplies WWX with increasingly slutty (affectionate) cultivation outfits.

being what I am | End OTW Racism by bunnxianluvsu (SVSSS, Bingqiu, modern AU)

True confessions: I did not like SVSSS. *Hides behind a desk* But I’m still glad I read it, because so many great authors are doing such great stuff with the source material. This no-powers modern AU is pure comfort food… which is appropriate, since it’s about renowned chef Binghe expressing his love for Shen Yuan with food after they re-enter each other’s lives. So warm and tender – a perfect winter read.

the massive machinery of hope by Killbothtwins (@killbothtwins) - I've read this one SO many times, it has one of my absolute favorite Qui-Gon&Obi-Wan dynamics of all time.

Dead Peanut Gallery by tanarill - IDK what to say about this one other than that it's very fun. Ghostly Obi-Wan pokes Vader into defecting when he finds out Luke is his in Episode V.

Kneading by Threebea O (ThreeBea) (@threebea) - Have you ever wanted a canonverse bakery AU that's actually undercover work and ends with our precious idiots getting kidnapped to Kamino? Because this fic is great. Everyone's got idiot moments, and also Boba is three, and adorable.

R2-D2 Saves the Galaxy (Okay, so Obi-Wan helps a little) by kj_feybarn (@feybarn) - One of my absolute favorite fics. Nothing liked Artoo POV, especially when interspersed with Obi-Wan.

there is no death (there is a wedding) by virdant (@virdant-writing) - one of my early forays into Jangobi, and generally just a very fun approach to things like Petty Legal Battles With Grandpa Who Thinks You Married Wrong.

Encrypted Channel by qigiined (@deniigi) - Do you want OT-era Rexwalker, but infinitely more stupid despite theoretically being too old for this shit? Do you want it in chatfic format? Do you want Vader to be following Rex around (metaphorically) with puppy eyes (less metaphorically) and being upset that Rex doesn't want to get with him after all the many crimes? Yes. You do.

A Star to Steer By by dogmatix, norcumi (@dogmatix, @norcumii) - I have reread this so many times. I'm not even in Stargate fandom, and yet this crossover verse owns me. (Still thinking about how Ventress and Narec and the entire Rattatak situation might have gone down ngl.)

Although He Smiles by AutumnChild22 (HonestlyHelen) (@autumnchild22) - we love a time travel fic that has people redefining the natures of their relationships to one another.

Blue Tooka Guy by Millberry_5 (@the-writing-mill) - This one is just a very fun little feel-good romp.

The Desert Storm and Rise and Fall by Blue_Sunshine (@blue-sunshine-mauve-morning) - Okay I admittedly haven't reread this multiple times, but I have reread parts of it multiple times, if that counts? (The two series together are one and a half million words, so.)

Realign the Stars by CrystalRainsWriting, TerinAngel (@terinangel) - afaik this is discontinued but it's so good and shaped a lot of my early approach to SW time travel fic.

Of Queens, Knights, and Pawns by chancecraz (@chancecraz) - Do you love Leia? Do you love hypercompetent future Leia who's cranky about being nineteen again because nobody takes her seriously? Read this.

Shifting Sands also by chancecraz - still a hypercompetent Leia, but further back and Still Old and also the most recent chapter was 65,000 words.

Don't Look Back by acuteneurosis (@this-acuteneurosis) - another Leia time-travel, this one focusing very heavily on political maneuvering and things like trade routes. We got economics and supply route fic.

Force of Many Sights by DAsObiQuiet - There's something magical about fics that go into such detail about the time and effort that therapy, especially therapy for Darth Vader, takes.

Viridescent Skies by DarthSnug (themikeymonster) (@themikeymonster) - listen I just really love age/role swaps and this is a REALLY good one.

Living in Borrowed Time by smug_albatross (@scribbling-albatross) - Another one of those fics that I'd say really shaped my early approach to characters of this era. The handling of Rex and Ahsoka is magnificent, honestly, and we all know I love a good time travel plot.

Senator Obi-Wan AU by BeanieBaby - incredibly fun. Yes there's Senator Kenobi, but there's also Fox being pursued by two different Jedi (Kit and Quin), a variety of topsy-turvy character interactions that make sense in a funhouse mirror sense (e.g. Obi-Wan preferring blasters to sabers because he didn't grow up with the Jedi), and Anakin repeatedly almost kills Palpatine by accident.

Soft Wars by Project0506 (@thefoundationproject) - no explanation needed. Is cute.

Dominoes by meridianpony (@meridiansdominoes) - we don't need to go over my intense love of time-travel fics again. really.

Sith Lord Swell by AMournfulHowlInTheNight (has a blog but not for fandom stuff) - Luke falls back in time and decides to handle it by pretending to be a Sith Lord. It works (somehow).

The Yunmeng Accords (series) by cafecliche. Featuring a gradual Yunmeng bros reconciliation and lots of contributions from the juniors.

Vagabond by xantissa. Sad and tricky case fic that helps Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian come together.

on the unfortunate termination of your proposal by Tepre. Lovely and sweet, grown-up Lan Sizhui and Jin Ling come to terms with their feelings.

pluck the stars by exoscopy. TGCF fusion (you don't need to have read it) that is post-canon canon, as far as I'm concerned.

Gathered Herbs & Sweet Grasses by hansbekhart. Lan Sizhui's life.

canon AU: Everyone Lives (With Knives) series by tucuxi. Pretty much what it says on the tin. One of the rare survival AUs that doesn't make everything simple and easy.

from the other side of sorrow by Sour_Idealist. Incredible and detailed AU that becomes an (almost) everybody lives AU.

Last Of Our Kind by Shiome. Lan Xichen lets Meng Yao escape to Dongying, but there are complications.

the weakness of falling in love by roquen. Jin Guangyao doesn't marry Qin Su, which changes a lot.

modern AU:

through a window softly by impossibletruths. Wei Wuxian flirts via duet with an unseen musician in his building.

so little time and i'm way off track by defractum. Wei Ying and Lan Zhan are reunited to hunt down a fake Yiling Wei sect. Also, they're lesbians.

The Greatest Catch (meryao) (series) by shiome. Meng Yao is a mermaid. It's great.

down by the water by astrolesbian. Amazing atmosphere of life in a small beach town. Wangxian, of course.

a study of the urban fridge deer by roquen. Meng Yao rescues Lan Xichen in modern day London.

The Simplest Way Forward by harriet_vane. I link this constantly but it's my go-to comfort fic, so. Wangxian get fake(?) married to raise A-Yuan.

The Right to Care by travelingneuritis. Lan Wangji is a musician, Wei Wuxian is a babysitter who is worried about his charge. It takes them a long time to work things out.

other AU:

midnight river by surething. Sci fi AU with lesbian wangxian, in which Wei Wuxian is an AI. Just go with it!!

Total Word Count: this year was def less productive than the last two years for fic, but i still ended up at about 201K for fandom writing.

Most Popular by Kudos: “let the yoke fall from our shoulders” (2K words), which is a sizhui pov fic (background wangxian) where wwx gets hurt on a night hunt.

Most Hits: “come to the harbor of your longing” (32K words), which is a wangxian seaside cottagecore fic.

Longest: my longest 2022 fic is actually not published yet! it’s a WIP that should publish at the end of january for an exchange and it will probably end up around 33K. other than that, it’s “come to the harbor of your longing” again at 32K.

Shortest: this was a fic i wrote for the bad buddy exchange, “run back to the lock of your arms” (pat/pran) at 1.8k words.

Fic that made me cry: so as a general rule i don’t cry at fic, and i actually did not end up reading a lot of fic this year :( but the last chapter of feyburner’s and sundiscus’ star trek wangxian au (71K) definitely had me emotional!

Fic that made me smile: “shoot your shot — hot or knot” by @defractum (51K, wangxian) had me rolling

Events participated in: a lot of events, actually! I helped to run the first year of WLW Wangxian Week as a mod along with phnelt, abbi daltoneering, and S dulosis, and then I also participated in two charity raffles (the Save Trans Kids raffle and the Raffle for Ukraine), the 2022 MXTX Exchange, the 2022 Bad Buddy Exchange and two server exchanges.

Most Underrated Fic: i’m not sure i believe it’s underrated heh but maybe the fic i wrote for ranwan, “build a fire, fetch the water” (14K)!

Coming in 2023: i have a wangxian WIP publishing at the end of january for a gift exchange, but i actually am going to try (and possibly fail!) to focus more on original projects this year by taking a small fic sabbatical. however, i love writing fic and also participating in exchanges so i will probably end up writing for some other danmei pairings at some point :)
