Reminder that Zuckerberg actively lobbied with Republican PR firms to make TikTok illegal because he couldn't compete with it.

Reminder that for all its faults TikTok has brought tons of awareness to important issues that barely got any coverage until they blew up on TikTok, and more that still barely got any mainstream coverage even after they did.

Reminder that TikTok has become the largest and easiest place for people to come together and organize, and has 150 million active users in the US.

Reminder that congress, especially conservatives, stand to gain a lot by banning it, because it means less people will hear about all the problematic (fascist) shit they're trying to pass, such as the 300+ anti-trans bills, the bills seeking to make abortion a felony punishable by death, or how they're trying to remove the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA). They also get to 'look tough' against China.

Reminder that claims of concerns over data privacy are bullshit, because China could literally just buy our data if they wanted it. Tech companies just like and including Facebook collect and sell our data all the time. China wouldn't need to build an app to get it.

Reminder that banning TikTok sets a precedent that Congress could come for literally any other social media they deem 'a threat' and ban that too. Yes, even your personal favorite one.

Reminder that we should care about this and instead of saying "Good Riddance TikTok!" we should be actively trying to stop this violation of free speech and stop handing more power to fascists just because we personally don't like a thing or think it's cringe. This is bigger than your personal tastes.

Please sign this letter from the ACLU to your members of Congress and urge them to listen. There's also a hearing this Thursday on March 23rd at 10am EST in DC where the TikTok CEO will be testifying before the House Energy and Commerce Committee. The hearing will be open to the public and will also be live streamed online.

I don't care if you hate TikTok or think it's "cringe." If you all actually hate Facebook and fascists as much as you say you do, then you won't stand for letting them win this fight to ban it.

I know I keep talking about how if TikTok gets banned it sets a precedent that Congress can come after any other social media and ban that too, but I don't think it's getting through.

Be that because most of you think "Oh it's just TikTok- Good riddance!" or you just think it won't effect you, I'm not sure- but I need you all to understand that the bill they're pushing is not just a "Ban TikTok Bill" it's an Internet Censorship Bill.

Here's the bill if you want to read it for yourself.

If you're thinking, 'Just move to a different social media, it's not that deep," You're wrong. There is no "Oh just move to another social media." Any social media they believe is making it too easy for people to come together and organize they will come for. Yes, it could even be tumblr.

This is bigger than just TikTok getting banned.

Congress does not want people having easy access to information. They're pushing fascism, and I'm not being hyperbolic.

They don't like that around 150 million US Americans use TikTok. Or that it's become the largest and easiest place for people to come together and organize. Or that it's also become a place where news travels fastest and gets the most coverage. News of the Iran Protests, the Strike in France, The Ohio Train Derailment, The 300+ anti-trans bills, all the anti-abortion bills, Stop Willow, Save ICWA, and the growing desire for a General Strike in the US, just to name a few, all got massively more coverage on TikTok than on the main news sources.

Congress does not like that.

If they can cut off our access to information, then it's easier to stop us from trying to hold them accountable. You can't protest what you're not aware of.

I also need you all to remember this all started because Zuckerberg actively lobbied with Republican PR firms to get TikTok banned because he couldn't compete with it. He's hoping everyone will come back to Facebook and Instagram if it's gone, and he worked with Republicans to do it. He did it for money.

If this passes we will literally have Zuckerberg to thank for this further descent into fascism, and yes, cutting your citizens off from outside information is what fascists do.

And I can't stress enough, he did it for money. He knew what he was doing, knew this would push us further into fascism, and he did it for money. We need to delete Facebook and Instagram if this passes, if not before. He doesn't get to be rewarded for this.

I am still skeptical with any of the claims they made, especially, Fediverse?!?!? Really? META/Facebook is profiting from homophobia. 

Meta is profiting off of ads that accuse LGBTQ people of sexually “grooming children,” even though the company has confirmed that using the slur against LGBTQ people violates its hate speech policy. Media Matters has identified at least 134 ads that have run on Meta's platforms in 2022 and use “groomer” rhetoric. These ads, most of which are from right-wing organizations and politicians, have at least 913,000 impressions and have earned Meta at least $12,700 in revenue.

In July, Meta confirmed to the Daily Dot’s Claire Goforth that content baselessly referring to LGBTQ people as “groomers” violates the company’s hate speech policies.

Right-wing media, political figures, and organizations have pushed the long-debunked myth that LGBTQ people pose a threat to minors and seek to “groom” them to attack teachers and progressive figures more broadly. This rhetoric has coincided with a conservative push to create legislation that strips away the rights of LGBTQ people, especially transgender people.

With the 2022 midterm elections on the horizon, we can expect Trump Republican extremists to ramp up homophobia in order to fire up their gradually dwindling bigoted base.

Facebook in the past has been a major purveyor of fake news to the benefit of Trumpsters. If Fb can make a few more bucks promoting hate or destroying democracy then that’s just fine in their eyes.

The best thing to do about Facebook is to leave it. That includes ALL platforms in the META conglomerate – including Instagram.

It always surprises me how many deactivated users there are here. And maybe most of them are the natural consequence of URL-hopping, but beyond those, the ones that intentionally deactivated--just the idea of actively deciding to terminate an account is so foreign to me.

I'm in the business of atrophy.

My Neopets exist, and persist, and are dying and continue to die for the last ten years my account has been dark. My penguin lived until the day Club Penguin died, immobile in its igloo, decoration among the puffles. My Webkinz stand in rooms which time refuses to allow even the dignity of gathering dust. My footprint stuffs the digital shelves of datacenters for sites and accounts I do not remember making.

I've made a horde of scattered exoskeletons, shells which I cannot even call ghosts because that implies a presence. They are husks. They are archives. They are records. I do not ever consider the mercy of allowing them to die.
