Beetlejuice headcanon/mini fic that just popped into my head. I’ve heard some criticism that The Ghost with the Most leaves for the Netherworld at the end of the show, even after he’s made amends with everyone and even when Juno is no longer an issue. Now I love a good found family trope as much as the next person (my AO3 history will agree lol) but what if he went into the Netherworld to find Lydia’s mother?

As a disclaimer, I’ve never seen the Tim Burton film or any of the cartoon or comics, so idk if it’s elaborated somewhere else. But if Juno is gone and therefore the regulations lifted from the entryways, what’s to stop ghosts from leaving the Netherworld?

So some amount of months to years pass and Lydia and the Deetzlands have all adjusted to their strange and unusual family dynamic. Lydia enters the living room, maybe on the way to the kitchen for a homework snack, and stops in her tracks, notebooks and pens clattering to the floor as she registers two familiar figures standing in the middle of the room. BJ launches into some monologue about how arduous it was searching through the vastness of the Netherworld and how many Sandworms he had to fend off in order to bring Emily back to the portal and that Miss Argentina sends her regards, but Lydia can’t bring herself to make a sound, her eyes still stuck on the translucent, but intensely familiar form of her mother. Eventually another grownup (my brain imagines Charles, bc obvi) enters the room to investigate the sound of things being dropped and respond in a similar manner to Lydia, attention captured by the sudden reappearance of Beetlejuice and his new ghostly companion.

Lydia eventually managed to break the silence with a shaky and disbelieving “…Mom?”

Emily smiles in response, her arms opening in an invitation. Her touch is now cool, like mist, and she doesn’t smell the same anymore due to her status of deceased, but Lydia is simply glad that she doesn’t phase through her like she feared she would.

Sometime during his journeys in the Netherworld, Beetlejuice has learned the power and value of silence, settling to lean back against the banister of the stairs with the other assembled adults, content to let this reunion play out without him. Eventually, he finds himself being dragged forward into a hug by a joyfully tearful Lydia, her dark eyeliner now running down her face.

“Welcome home,” are the only words she can say.

A/N: maybe one day I’ll expand on this more and write an actual fic, but, for now, this is the best I’ve got

#FunFact: Musicals are equipped with an arsenal of understudies and swings that are prepared to go on for any role at a moment’s notice. Leading up to them going on there are countless hours of understudy rehearsals with team directing, choreography and stage management. They go to numerous fittings with @/beetlejuicewardrobe to be fit in to the variety of costumes they will be wearing (Some understudies and swings can cover as many as 5 tracks). They spend hours on stage with our crew getting comfortable with the complicated technical elements of @/beetlejuicebroadway. This all culminates in a Put-In rehearsal where we run the show from start to finish with all show elements for everyone to experience the production in real-time. Our understudies and swings absolutely crushed it today! Stay tuned for our next round of amazing understudies that will get their Put-In in the coming weeks!

Chapter 2: Another Business Proposal

As soon as Lydia vanishes into the kitchen, you turn to the inside cover of the book to check the list of targets. Etched below Charles and Lydia is another pair with matching surnames: Adam and Barbara Maitland.

You find it a little odd for a second family to be in here. For all you know, this could be a haunted boarding house and Juno’s sent you to evict a happy couple on vacation. 

Or more blood relatives. 

The next name, “Schlimmer, Delia”, does seem to add to the boarding house theory, as well as the one on the bottom, “Shoggoth, Lawrence Betelgeuse”.

That last one causes you to wrinkle your nose involuntarily. 

How the hell did someone with the weirdest middle and last name you’ve ever seen end up with a name like Lawrence? Come to think of it, why is their middle name specified at all? Guess those’ll be questions to ask before you stab them in the back.

You flip back to the section you were working through, and you’ve found that stress is not an experience exclusive to the living. As you desperately skim through the words, trying to make sense of all the theorems and rules, your brain feels like it’s going to catch on fire. 

You’re clutching your throbbing head, trying to wrap it around the difference between complementary and supplementary angles, when you hear a deep voice clear its throat. 

Standing before you is Charles Deetz, wearing a concerned expression.

“...Are you alright?” he asks.

You’ve clearly passed the point of hiding your breakdown. You shake your head, teeth gritted.

“Let’s see what we have here.” 

He calmly offers a hand and takes the book, but his brow furrows as soon as his eyes scan the pages.

“Ah. I’m more of a…realtor than a structural engineer,” he admits, sheepishly.

He hands the book back, and gestures to the seat to your left. You pat the couch cushion, and he sits down with a groan.

Charles sighs.

“Seems like everyone’s suffering through things they don’t talk about, nowadays. Lord knows we’re all familiar with that here.”

He chuckles, but there’s no mirth in his breath. He’s fidgeting with a simple silver band on his left ring finger.

“I can’t pretend to understand what you’re going through, but I was young and taking jobs I couldn’t handle, too.”

You barely stop yourself from letting out a bitter laugh, yourself. 

Charles turns to face you in earnest. As you take in his rigid posture, unflinching eyes, and ink-black suit, you realize you’ve switched from talking to Charles the father to Charles the businessman, now.

“At the rate this is going, I don’t think you or Lydia will be gaining anything but migraines from this session. I can pay you for your trouble and send you home right now, and I assure you I’ll do my best to make sure you aren’t fired. But the bottom line is, this is your decision.”

Before you can come up with an answer, you feel a pulsing sensation in one of your hands.

The one that shook Juno’s.

You quickly glance to your palm to find that there are glowing red markings scrawled all over it. 

Charles clears his throat, bringing your attention back to the situation at hand.

I’ve watched “Beetlejuice” and this time it’s finally the musical. I enjoyed it so much! It’s very funny! It has a lot of references in the lyrics and texts including musical theatre references, I even heard a “Hello, Dolly” reference and it surprised me! Did I mention how amusing it is? It’s hilarious! It has so many good jokes! The music and lyrics are cool! I’m probably going to download the full soundtrack. (For the statistics, from more than one hundred musicals I’ve watched for the last a little more than a year I’ve loaded more than two songs from only thirteen.) They changed the plot a little from the original movie focusing more on Beetlejuice himself and Lydia, than on the Maitlands. That’s why we see some more loneliness and depression problems elucidation. The production is also something that surprised me – a huge sandworm! On stage! So, yes, a great thing, I understand why everybody loves it so much (I’ve noticed a lot of animatics and other content online). P.S. I wanted to make a stupid little joke that I hope that Sophia Anne Caruso (Lydia) will play Veronica (Sawyer, from “Heathers”) one day but didn’t know where to put it, so I’m putting it here (I think I’m like the millionth person who made that joke).

Happy Halloween everyone! I present to you Family Plot, the Beetlejuice The Musical (the musical the musical) fancomic.

I fell in love with this musical over summer, and the idea for this specific adventure built and built until I knew I had to make it. It’s been a lot of fun and I’ve been super anxious to start posting this.
