Learning a Trade

Every convict is required to work, and you’ll see how appropriate it was that Jeep’s labor detail was the prison library. At first the cons that run the place were complaining to the CO. “Why’d you give us that goddamn APE? He can’t even READ!” “So what?” the CO said. “Who axed YOU animals to live in this zoo?”
So like always, the cons had to do the best with what they got, and Jeep was assigned to “straightening the books.” “At least we’ll get to see him use those MUSCLES!” one of them said. To which another one said, “You mean the ones in his head?”
Eventually, though, it was decided that if they were going to spend the rest of their lives with Jeep, they’d need to find something favorable about the situation.
“He might not be good with words,” it was said, “but he can probably read numbers.”
“Maybe he can read his own number. I’m not sure about the numbers on the books.”
“He wanders around the stacks like he doesn’t know where he is.”
“Yeah, but he can’t get far. Not with MC stamped all over him.”
“Too bad he can’t read it. Then he’d know where he is.”
“Yeah? Really?”
