The D.E.N.N.I.S. System Part 2. Mac Boogaloo
I've rambled about this on the macden den, but I want to make my ramblings coherent on here in the case that I am correct.
I think Mac is D.E.N.N.I.S.ing Dennis.
Before getting to each letter of the acronym, I just want to point out how hilarious this would be from a writing standpoint. It's a sort of karmic justice to see a system that Dennis used to be a horrible monster person turned and used against him. Along with that, the reveal that over the course of multiple seasons post Mac coming out Mac used the system is pretty cool.
Let's start with D, Demonstrate value. It's arguable that Mac has been trying to demonstrate his value to Dennis for a long time. The most notable example pre-coming out is in Being Frank where Mac tries to get Frank to tell Dennis how much Mac can dead lift.
Actually, for Mac, a lot of what he sees value in for himself is his "strength." This is most often a joke, like Mac calling himself the "sheriff of Paddy's Pub" but a lot of what he values in himself (delusional or not) is mass, strength, and ability to protect. This is pretty well documented throughout the show, but a good example is The Gang Gets Analyzed.
This takes us to the very start of Season 13 in The Gang Makes Paddy's Great Again, where Mac gets super buff in a super short amount of time. The discussions surrounding that are also intertwined with the conversations about the Dennis sex doll, as it's pretty obvious Mac has been missing and thinking about Dennis while he was in ND. The idea that Nac has been torn up over Dennis leaving is proved when Kelly says "you clearly [had] a Mac shaped hole in your life that you needed to fill," proving that Mac has been talking and thinking about Dennis's absence over their time apart. This is a possible explanation, or part of an explanation on why Mac got so ripped, as the explanation in the episode is somewhat lacking.
Unfortunately for Mac, Dennis doesn't really seem to give a shit about his appearance, as the only thing he says about it initially is asking Mac if he gained weight. This is later elaborated on in Times Up For the Gang, where Dennis tells Mac that it doesn't matter how much he works out because he'll still be ugly.
Despite this, I believe that getting jacked was Mac's way of D, Demonstrating his value to Dennis, through what he sees as most valuable, mass and ability to protect.
This leads us to E, Engage Physically. This point is best exemplified in the episode Times Up For the Gang, so we'll just narrow in to focus on this episode.
During the start of the episode, Mac not-so-subtly puts his hand on Dennis's knee or thigh, continuing to do so even after Dennis moves his hand away. This is only stopped after Dennis yells at him and splits into a different group.
This is an attempt to engage physically, despite how awkward it is. It seems like, based of the interaction we see, this is not the first time Mac has done it, because when Dennis moves his hand away initially there's little hesitation or confusion, almost like this is something he's dealt with before.
The idea that Mac has tried to "engage physically" before is proven later in the episode when Dennis tells Mac that "You've also objectified tons of men, including me. You gotta stop kissing me man... I don't want you touching me at all."
Yes, massive L to the Macdennies, pour one out, but this is pretty definitive proof that Mac has been making an attempt to engage Dennis physically, though the debate lies in whether this is a genuine misguided attempt to engage with a crush by ignoring social cues, or if this is apart of a system.
Letter number 3, N, Nurture Dependence, comes in season 14, mostly in the form of "The Gang Chokes."
Mac and Dennis's plot in this episode centers around Dennis feeling like he can't depend on anyone were his life in danger, and Mac trying to prove that Dennis can depend on him.
Now, this being Sunny, and Mac being the asshole he is, this comes in the form of literally poisoning Dennis with a shake made of foods that he learned earlier in the episode that Dennis can't eat because they're "poison" to him.
The word "depend" as in "depends on" or "relies on" is used a lot throughout the episode. Mac explicitly tells Charlie that the reason he's poisoning Dennis is because "[he] wants Dennis to depend on [him]" and the idea of Mac trying to get Dennis to depend on him is the driving point of the episode.
All in all, Mac poisoning Dennis isn't nearly as terrible as what Dennis has done on this stage of the system to women, so I guess points for that. But The Gang Chokes is incredibly explicit about the episode being about Mac trying to get Dennis to depend on him.
Dennis depending on Mac is also shown in the episode The Gang Texts, where in a long, sincere text to Dennis, Mac lists the things he does for him, which come down to: Dyeing his hair, massaging his pecs, and making shakes. (Presumably non poisoned ones? I'd really hope that Mac would have stopped poisoning Dennis after chokes, but who knows.)
If Mac were to leave Dennis, Dennis would crumble. We saw this in Mac and Dennis Break Up, but at that point, there relationship was more codependent. Mac has manufactures a scenario where Dennis is dependent on him to do things for him, to the point where if Mac left, Dennis would be left to have to figure out a lot of things. It doesn't seem unrealistic that if Mac were to leave, Dennis would have a breakdown of some kind.
That's where we are as of the end of season 14, but lets look at the future ahead in season 15. If Mac is following the D.E.N.N.I.S. system, the next step would to be the second N, Neglect Emotionally.
Keep in mind, from here on out is just speculation, and I won't get deep into spoilers.
It is possible this season that Mac will start ignoring Dennis, and we'll see Dennis break down over not having Mac there. Dennis is so unknowingly dependent on Mac that if he were left alone, he would have a hard time functioning.
From there, either Dennis has a jealousy arc or he realizes how much he needs Mac, Mac I, Inspires hope, and boom, canon Macdennis.
(At least until they get to S, Separate entirely, but whatever that's like season 17. That's a season 17 Fern problem.)
Anyway, I think it would be incredibly karmically satisfying if Dennis were to get "D.E.N.N.I.S.'d," and the payoff episode where Mac explains how he used the system, reminiscent of the original episode, would be very funny.
Thanks for reading <3 and is it Thursday yet?
