I'm sure the last thing anyone needs is one more person weighing in on this, however: I've never used Tiktok and have no plans to change that; if a Tiktok is worth watching it will cross platforms one way or another. However, the only thing that terrifies me more than an entire social media platform being outright banned is the mindset "This censorship is okay because it doesn't affect me personally." (or worse, "This censorship is okay because I find the people affected by it annoying.") is setting a precedent that a social media platform can be shut down because people able to write or lobby for legislation object to how it's being used.
Don't get me wrong, about a third of what I see coming off of it is misinformation getting debunked, and a lot of it really grinds my gears knowing that misinformation probably reached more people than the debunking. But if we let this be the solution, it will not stop with Tiktok.

my day today:
My nephew: I’m watching Pewpewdie me: Don’t. (to my joy, he did turn off the video when I explained why)
me: *hears about the supreme court* well look at that <nephew> time travel IS possible. We’ve just gone back in time.
my nibling: they’re supporting laws that mean they get to decide what happens to our bodies. my nephew: they’re just insane me: Please don’t use ableist language. They’re wrong, they’re mean, and they’re awful, but that doesn’t make them insane.

lead balloon (the tumblr post that saved me)
if this comic resonated with you, it would mean the world to me if you donated to this palestinian family's escape fund.
--
no creative notes because this isn't that kind of comic.
I know I don’t owe any of you anything but I still felt compelled to write about my long term absence. And I feel far enough away from the dangerous spot I was in to be able to make this comic. I have a therapist now, and she agreed that making this could be a very cathartic gesture, and the start of properly leaving these thoughts behind me. I am still, at seemingly random times, blindsided by fleeting desires to kill myself. They’re always passing urges, but it’s disarming, and uncomfortable. I worry sometimes that my brain’s spent so long thinking only about suicide that it’s forgotten how to think about anything else. Like, now that I've opened that door for myself, I'll never be able to fully shut it again. But I’m trying my best to encourage my mind in other directions. We'll see how that goes.
I am still donating all proceeds from my store to Palestinian causes. So far, I've donated over $15K, not including donations coming from my own pocket or the fundraising streams which jointly raised around $10K. In the time since I made my initial post about where this money would be going, the focus has shifted from aid organisations to directly donating to escape funds.
If you'd like to do the same, you can look at Operation Olive Branch, which hosts hundreds of Palestinian escape funds or donate to Safebow, which has helped facilitate the safe crossing and securing of important medical procedures for over 150 at-risk palestinians since the beginning of the genocide.

hakoda: you need to stay here and protect your sister
13 year old sokka, whose only point of reference for "protecting his sister" is literally his mother sacrificing herself in katara's place: ok 😃

I think one underrated tragedy of Ice King's scars is that he probably took away Simon's sense of levity.
Like in his very limited appearances before Simon is consumed by the crown we see he's kind of a silly dude. In his introduction video, he only put on the crown in order to playfully tease his fiancee. Plus watching him make light of the loneliness and general misery for a young girl in a broken world. He was a dedicated man, who was generous and loved with his whole heart and threw himself one hundred percent into everything he did. He was also a fun lil guy.
But after almost a millennia of being a mad man, the brunt of every joke, someone who only existed as a broken caricature of himself and couldn't be counted on to take anything seriously, I imagine he was done with it. Now he wants to focus back on his academic endeavors, on his role as a father figure in Marcy's life, on being a proper adult. Any attempts to be silly could easily remind everyone - including himself- of Ice King, something he's eager to avoid.
So his jokes and jibes and general lightheartedness turned to sarcasm and self deprecating comments.

i love the tower princes. i love that there’s absolutely no way in hell that this friendship is even remotely good for either of them. love that they assuredly are making each other SO much worse with every second they spend together.

Idk new post bc the last lost traction, no donations in a week. We need 450 for the rest of February, 450 for a deposit, and 950 for March, 50 for the rest of the utilities. We were homeless since Aug 2020 excepting 4 different months whose places fell through for various reasons, have to get rid of the van we were living in because it's falling apart, Collie got FFS December 28th, she's recovering well and maybe could do something with a car if we had a better car, given her ability to drive. I still haven't found much work but I'm still looking. Anything helps.

So this is probably obvious to a lot of people but I've only figured it out recently.
Back when Trump was first running for president, I got sucked into an unfortunate conversation with our local postmaster. Essentially, he voiced his regrettable opinion that he supported Trump and thought I should as well. (he also attributed the "grab them by the pussy" quote to Barack Obama, so this man clearly was getting his information from a very different source than I do)
I said I didn't agree with any of his suggested policies and even if I did, I couldn't vote for a sex offender. He then told me I was a hypocrite because I supported Bill Clinton and he was also a sex offender. This baffled me, firstly because he was the one who introduced Bill Clinton into the conversation, I had voiced no opinion on the man, and secondly because I was in grade school when Clinton was in office and I couldn't have voted for him even if I wanted to. I did tell him as much and left, feeling that he simply made a ridiculous leap of logic and was clearly an outlier. I have since encountered other people who made the same leap of logic and recently realised something.
These people are thinking of political parties like sports teams. That they are functionally the same, but you pick one and you are loyal to it for no other reason than you enjoy the feeling of loyalty. This also explains why they think you shouldn't stop being friends with someone over politics. If someone said, "Well I enjoy spending time with you, but you're a Yankees fan and I'm a Red Sox fan and that means we can't be friends", that would be pretty stupid. (that said, I am sure it has happened at least once) I'm not sure if they think that it doesn't matter because they think it won't affect anyone's lives or if they are aware it will and simply do not care about the people whose lives will be affected.
This isn't to say that I don't think most of the policies from one party aren't preferable to most of the policies coming from the other one, but this does not engender a loyalty for one side so much as a feeling of revulsion for the other. But I do think staying on a side because you like the feeling of having a side to be on is both stupid and dangerous.

So I had a horrifying thought;
All these Pride endorsing companies, who have donated a lot to anti-queer institutions.
Encouraging us to go out and return to our parades and gatherings.
Guys, there’s still a fookin’ pandemic on, okay? Less likely to die doesn’t mean not dying.
(completely aside from the fact it would put a lot of targets in one place, and all the godsdamn mass shootings. do I like picturing what would happen if an assault rifle opened up on a pride parade? No. Is my brain providing it anyway? Yes.)

I think it would really benefit people to internalize that mental illnesses are often chronic and not acute. Some of us will never be able to jump the hurdle of managing illness, much less sustaining a sense of normalcy. Many of us will never "recover," will never manage symptoms, will never even come close to appearing normal - and this is for any condition, even the ones labeled as "simple" disorders or "easy-to-manage" disorders.
It isn't a failure if you cannot manage your symptoms. It isn't a moral failure, and you aren't an awful person. You are human. There's only so much you can do before recognizing that you cannot lift the world. Give yourself the space to be ill because, functionally, you are.

IAN GALLAGHER + his journey with bipolar disorder
╰┈➤ “At times, being bipolar can be an all-consuming challenge, requiring a lot of stamina and even more courage, so if you’re living with this illness and functioning at all, it’s something to be proud of, not ashamed of." - Carrie Fisher
#happy world bipolar day to all my bp babies#(more thoughts at the end of the tags)#shameless#shamelessnet#shamelessedit#ian gallagher#cameron monaghan#*macygifs#bipolar disorder#hello pals how are we doin#i made this gif set in july of 2023 and never posted it because 1) i was terrified to share it and potentially see Bad Takes in the tags#and 2) because my hyperfixation was waning. and while both of those things are still mostly true (the fixation comes and goes)#i feel like it's really important to share as ian's bipolar storyline was not only so vital to his character it was a bit of representation#that isn't often given to the disorder and those (like myself) who live with it every single day#world bipolar day is a day where we can both celebrate ourselves and our resilience and also raise awareness of the reality of the disorder#which is both terrifying and beautiful at its core. this disease is not a death sentence or a sentence to an unfulfilled and miserable life#while there are challenges galore when it comes to balancing life with this disorder it IS possible to live a full and productive life#and i think it's really important to have representation of that in media - and while shameless dropped the ball on a LOT of storylines#over the years THIS is the one they really fucking nailed and i am incredibly grateful#i first started watching shameless while in the midst of a major depressive episode and i was later (finally) diagnosed during an extended#hypo/manic episode - this show and ian's storyline got me through so much and made me feel so seen and validated in my struggles#world bipolar day is also vincent van gogh's birthday (happy birthday buddy) who was posthumously diagnosed with bipolar disorder#and who experienced both depressive and hypo/manic episodes during his lifetime (and was regularly institutionalized)#it takes a lot of help and support to keep us going. it takes the support of our family and friends and *most* of all#it takes patience and kindness and understanding - which is so so so easy to give if you are willing to love and listen#so please. be willing. listen to our stories. be patient with us. show us love without conditions. support us in any way you can.#we are worth it#i promise#anyway. that's really all i wanted to say. happy world bipolar day to those who celebrate (me) and may all of us living with this disorder#go on to live happy fulfilling beautiful magical lives
