1. How did they first meet?

Through work, when Matt filled in because they were short staffed then stayed on. 

2. What did they think of each other at first?

Matt thought Grant was a poor, sad bastard- for good reason, once he got the details about Grant’s time in the military, but he made it his mission to get the guy to loosen up, even a little bit, and it passed- with flying colors. Rainbow colors, wink wink wink. 

Grant wasn’t quite sure what to think of Matthew at first. He was a bit torn, but he wasn’t some arrogant prick like Pratt was, he was fairly more lively than Hudson, he was... well, he was basically Nic but he knew when to quit and gave him a wide berth when it came to letting Grant warm up to him when Nic didn’t bother, so that gave him a lot of bonus points. He appreciated the guy’s worth ethic and sense of humor, and he adored that the man had a sweet tooth the size of the United States.

3. Were they immediately interested / attracted, or did that come later?

Matthew was. It took Grant a while to get with the program. His own brain was to blame at first- a lot of self-loathing, a lot of ‘well, I’m interested but what would he want with me, what could I give him, I’m damaged goods?’ and then their friendship took off and the lightbulb went on that Matt genuinely enjoyed their time together, then the cogs started turning - “huh, maybe this would work, maybe I do have a shot” - and he did, and it’s been the best relationship Grant’s ever had.

A short description about your OC: Born in Browning, MT and raised in Calgary, AB, Matthew was always close to his family, especially his older sisters. His French-Canadian mother doted on her youngest child endlessly, and his Blackfeet father couldn't be more proud of the son he raised. After coming out, though, things turned sour and Matt returned to Montana. He spent several years trying to find his feet, and after a nasty breakup, Matt decided to do something different and apply for a deputy position in Hope County. He's a pretty easy-going guy who enjoys hiking, fishing, eating sweets, and petting dogs. If he could spend all day sleeping, he would. The one thing he wants most, though? Somewhere to call home, and someone to share it with.

🌾  -Describe your OC through the eyes of someone absolutely head over heels in love with him:  Let’s keep the good ship Gatthew afloat: Matt: “He’s been through way too much for any one person to handle, he’s too good for this world, the best thing that ever happened to me... ... but also needs to learn to wreck me more often, if you catch my drift.” 

🌳 - What is your OC’s favorite way to relax after a stressful day? Do they have a favorite book to curl up with? A hobby? Or do they have a nice bubble bath and have an early night to bed? Grant will take a drive to the middle of nowhere and just watch the sunset. Alternatively, if he’s got a few days to kill after said stress, he’ll head out to his uncles’ place in Wyoming to spend time with them and their horses. Insta-therapy. 

🌺 What does your OC do to calm down when they’re scared or after a nightmare? Do they have any special comfort items or need to be reassured by a specific person? How do they handle this if they’re alone? In either ‘verse, either John or Matt will most likely wake up to him fidgeting-post nightmare and half lay on him to try to help ground him and realize he’s not back overseas/he’s safe. He’s still fairly good at talking himself down without them, but it takes a fair bit longer.  On top of that, Matt will usually get out of bed and go bake him something/raid the fridge for junk food for him, and Grant’s just “Really? 🌼 Who are this characters friends and found family? How did they meet, how long have they been friends for, could they ever be something more than just friends? What do they look for in a friend or a romantic partner? Most of the Hope County PD is his found family. Whitehorse is like another uncle to him- he won’t say father because he can barely stand his and ‘uncle’ has a better correlation, he sees Nic as a sister and would hands down die and kill for her if he had to, Hudson’s decent, he’s not too fond of Pratt but he doesn’t dislike him either. He’s also fond of Grace with the military background in common. And same goes for Jacob in non-cult AUs where Jacob didn’t go... that far, and Miller just died/gave up/etc. They’ve both been through way too heavy shit to bear, and having the Miller family in common is as hurtful as it is helpful, so they understand each other a great deal and they end up ride or die friends pretty quickly. When it comes to romance, Grant probably would’ve never gone for John had the ‘last man on Earth’ thing nearly applied, or the fact that John mellowed out a fair bit in his own grief and became tolerable and a decent platonic partner before he became a romantic partner. Matt, on the other hand, is pretty similar to Nic, but Matt gave him space when Grant was putting out the vibes for people to do so, he didn’t ask about his time in  the military and let Grant give him the information at his own pace, and he’s fairly less boisterous than her, which is straight A+s across the board, so he befriended and got attracted to him really quickly.

     John is glad they have a mutual friend. It gives him a reason to abstain from simply turning the deputy into a martyr – a fact of which he’s grateful for, because maybe some part of him that isn’t wholly sadistic is also attracted to the man. He doesn’t say this. But it might be known to anyone who watches the way John watches Matthew. The way that his eyes seem to graze upon him, for once devoid of any ill-intent, when Rook folds his sleeves at the elbow. His forearms are exposed beneath the sunlight and John can’t help but trace a furtive stare across the pink lines in the skin. It is the lines of a healed sin that he had carved into the flesh a month prior, during a time in which there was little fondness for Matthew to be found in John. It’s different now. He certainly doesn’t love him, but there is no hate there for him either – not even after all Rook’s done to hurt the church. Those silos can be replaced, the outposts that once belonged to Eden’s Gate easily recovered with the right determination. John looks down at his own forearms, realizing they share a physical similarity, and then back to Matthew.

     “Alright, you show off, one of us is going to have to change.” He grins, raising his left wrist to display the scarred lettering that stretches the length of his own forearm. A noun not more pleasant than the one Rook bears. Perhaps it was in part Coraline’s way of avenging what John had done to the deputy. He’ll tell himself that even if he knows it’s certainly wrong.

      By some miracle, it was a rare moment of Matt and John not being at each other's throats. Sure, Rook knew how harsh he had been on the Seeds and their Cult- but at the end of the day, he was a Deputy, and they were hurting innocent people. However, after spending so long in the middle of this entire mess, he’d made friends and alliances he never thought he’d have. Coraline was a good friend, and was perhaps the only reason John hadn’t yet received a bullet through the skull. Perhaps the only reason he was learning to tolerate the man, especially without the eyes of others watching.

      Something about the calmer atmosphere was.. nice. Something he missed, really. He’d always been wary of John. Chances are he’d never trust the man fully after he’d shown how much of a fucking nutcase he was, but part of Matt did somewhat wish that John would’ve been.. different. Someone that he could even call a friend, maybe. Although as time passed it was started to become clearer that the Seeds had more than their fair share of problems, it didn’t excuse their behaviors or crimes of course, but maybe if something in their pasts had been different, they wouldn’t be here. 

       Yet it had never crossed his mind that he’d ever be alone in the company of John Seed without watching his every move like a bloody hawk. Maybe it was because the man has had every chance under the sun to put an end to the annoying deputy, yet still refused to do it for reasons he doubted he’d ever hear. 

     The words catch him off guard at first, pulling Matt from his long train of thought. He turns his head to the other, momentarily shocked at the fact John is grinning at him with no ill intent or bad manor. Rook looks at the similar scarred letters carved into the other’s arm, a small huff of amusement as he studies it from afar. 

      “Would you look at that--” He offers a small smile of his own, raising his own wrist and looking between the two similar markings. There’s a teasing tone to his words, although he still held a grudge against the painful letters, at least it wasn’t rare around here to walk around with some sin carved into your arm. “Y’know next time you want to carve somethin’ into my arm, y’ could do it a little neater.”

          ‘   we’ll be here a while.   ’     he speaks in a low hum, the insight almost as much for himself as it is for the deputy. this place can get  l o n e s o m e , despite endless prayer—quiet despite the constant scanning of dutch’s myriad of radios. it feels as though he’s choking on his own thoughts, and he isn’t the one chained to a bedpost. it’s with this thought in mind that joseph places the key within rook’s reach.     ‘   stretch your legs. you’ll need to keep your strength.   ’
