The whole of the Derry Girls finale was perfect, but it’s the last scene with Chelsea Clinton that really gets to me the most; I think for me it’s the fact that it’s now over 20 years since the events in series 3 and the girls could be anywhere, doing anything by then. And yet a little part of their crazy, emotional, broken but beautiful teenage adventures will forever live on in this letter to Chelsea. Just like they’ll always live on in the hearts of the show’s viewers. And I find that so overwhelmingly beautiful.

Kudos to Michelle

I want to post a little appreciation for Michelle in Derry Girls in the last episode. In the last episode, she revealed a very sensitive side to her that relates to her conflict of how she was going to vote in the Good Friday Agreement Referendum. It openly shows how much she brushes things aside in light of teasing when they very clearly bother her to the core. James, her cousin, I think was given her brother Niall’s bedroom when he was abandoned in Derry which made her almost see him as a “replacement” she didn’t want. To me it seemed that Niall sided with the IRA and killed someone in a very complicated situation. James being English didn’t help Michelle accept him as family as the conflict between the IRA and the British Army probably made her naturally quite bitter towards James on a more personal level for his English heritage, particularly when Niall and her probably had a conversation before he went to join the IRA. But Michelle values family more than anything else and James being English ended up not mattering. He became the only person who didn’t show tough love or disinterest in her, which I’m sure her mother did constantly. It’s hinted that James and Michelle often watched films together, probably had conversations that lasted hours in how the film was good or bad. The fact that this all happened without us knowing and she sought to keep James from leaving Derry tells me that he is the most important person to her and truly would be distraught if he wasn’t a part of her life anymore. BONUS: she also openly said to Erin that she is “spoiled, selfish and sheltered”, and she is. Erin openly having severe problems with her family (for example, the accusation of her mother being abusive and threatening to call child-line) when there were none (families aren’t perfect obviously). Erin has it all - loving mother, father, grandfather, cousin, friends for life and a lovely young man who is clearly head-over-heels for her. Yet the prospect of having troubles on top of The Troubles just makes it so much more dramatic for her so that is her focus to make her seem more of a victim. Typical teen so we can forgive her for that 😅
