Do yourself a favor and go purchase ‘Descendant of the Crane’ by Joan He.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not only is the cover beautiful, but the publisher withheld money from the author after the initial hardcover (left) release and she could use the support in the new paperback publishing (right)
Not to mention, the characters are beautiful!

pretty cover book 4: Descendant of the Crane
I have a very love/hate relationship with this one.
The good: beautifully written, interesting worldbuilding, likable characters and really well defined character relationships. Romance is virtually nonexistent (honestly it’s easy to forget the love interest even exists at times which is a bit of a negative lol but given how much I don’t care for romance I’m not complaining), lots of mystery and political intrigue, Sanjing my beloved.
The bad: excuse me author?? you end the book like that and dare to say you have no plans for a sequel????? GIVE ME BACK MY EMOTIONAL INVESTMENT!

Descendant of the Crane follows Hesina after her father's death, where she will become queen and get a trial for justice on her father's suspicious death. It will force her to commit treason by contacting and using a Sooth, which leads her to a criminal that must represent her in trial. And unknowingly lead her to shocking secrets, betrayal, and more.
There was so much going on in this book, the trial, the Sooths, the running the country, the looming war, the secrets, the complicated relationships between siblings, and duty. I will say that despite having all that going on, there were times this book was awfully slow. But I'm really glad I pushed on because it was really good.
Hesina was my favorite character and I just LOVED her. Too many times in YA fantasy books we get young rulers who just don't feel like proper rulers. They don't feel like they would put their country or people first, or they feel inadequate or a different number of things. I NEVER felt that way with Hesina. Did she commit treason? Yes but there was never a doubt in my mind that she wouldn't do anything for her country. For her people, even do things she is horrified of for them. She's unflinching and stubborn and she was just a really good character.
I really loved the relationships Hesina had with all her siblings. The strained broken relationship with her blood brother. The love she had for her adopted siblings. The awkward relationship she had with her half-sibling. Even the awful relationship with her mother was unique and made more sense at the end. The only relationship that was just okay was Akira, who eventually became the love interest. Akira is an odd character because he's around some of the time and then he's just gone for chunks of time. I feel like I don't particularly know him well and I feel like something is off about him. Maybe there's more to learn later on in another book.
I really want to understand more of the Sooths and the magic they have. Again, it's likely more will be addressed later but I'm very interested.
The reveals, especially that cemetery one 🤯, were really well done. I really loved that Joan He didn't hold back on the brutality either. There's a sense that fixing any kind of problem feels nearly impossible and it's one thing after another and another, which feels RIGHT. Hesina can't wave a magic one or decree something to magically fix centuries of hate or problems.
That ending was definitely a shock as well but it was good! I really look forward to more of this series and Joan He's books as well..

To this day, we still haven't figured out genshin's biggest mystery...
How did Collei go from Sumeru to Mondstadt, crossing a good chunk of Liyue, WITHOUT getting adopted by Cloud Retainer?!?!?!??
