ohmygosh this ask is a bomb fr i really had to go through my playlist to find the one that suits them the best so here we go, i've added a bit of translations for some friends too 🩷 (i've added the songs below the descriptions for each)

@onyourhyuck is another beautiful beautiful friend and this song talks about "oh beautiful white dove, flap your wings and fly and reach the heights that no one has reached and keep on moving forward and forward without any fear" the meanings and ryhrms are perfect like herself it's aptly fitting her precious vibes

@partiallyderived is clearly my jaan i know she said she was dilliwali girlfriend before but again idk how to explain it's the very sassy and queen like energy she gives off it's all very very diva like and i know how badly she wishes the guy in the car was phanbin that's why this is her

is high card worth watching I saw u rb gifs of vijay and got really excited bc i don't think ive ever seen a desi character in anime but i don't actually know what it's about

So. You already saw my other post about Vijay and how he doesn't get his own dedicated episode (he deserves it though I'm rooting for it to happen one day 😤😤😤). He isn't even there all that much but granted outside of their dedicated episodes Wendy and Leo aren't either. He shares a va with Keito enstars btw they are so wasting all of that potential right there (Chris also shares a va with Rei and they have some interesting parallels as character arcs imo).

But narratively speaking, absolutely. Its very tightly paced and the first episode really drags you right into everything with our main character and they do an excellent job of show don't tell with everything. The whole world is based on a playing card system with different abilities and ranks for the cards, and just about every name of a place or organization is related to a card game.

The animation style and voice acting really add to it and its just a good time all around! I had a normal one and binged most of s1 yesterday, I'm hoping to catch up to s2 tonight since that has 8 episodes out so far. There's also a manga series, audio dramas, and light novels/short stories with more stuff that I'm gonna be poking around for.

I am brown. And, yes, I do mind that they changed it to Kathani from Katherine, but does a name is required to have some meaning?? behind it's syllables?? couldn't it just be a twist into a previously existing name?? because we Indians tend to that a lot. They would just twist a name by adding a suffix or something or remove few letters. And though I completely understand the fandom's disappointment about the change in Kate's name, I don't really mind it. Let people do what they like. Be it Kathani Or Katherine.

Huge shoutout to the gang but especially @hptriviachamp sis has heard me complain and rant with me about this issue since Day 1 and a lot of the points I've made we've discussed before and have come from her!

Anon, I mean this in a funny way but I am revoking your brown card. As a brown (and I'm assuming Indian or Desi) person, you have to know it's a big part of our culture to have names with meanings. For those of you who don't know: when naming in our culture, intent certainly matters and your parents specifically pick names with meaning.

Let's use me and my siblings for example. Sanjitha means victory and my parents wanted me to have all the wins in life (not sure if that worked out lmao but it's what they wanted for me and also I was their first born so a victory for them!) and my brothers' names mean music and joy respectively. Both named for their laughs if I'm remembering correctly. All this to say, the way our names were picked were very intentional and done with care.

On the other hand, Kathani was chosen by a white guy who rearranged the letters of Katharine and took away some letters. Yeah, sure some Indians take names and twist it around but it has no meaning and feels empty (also I cannot believe you Indiansplained this to me I'M INDIAN TOO). And it's even worse with Kathani because an Indian person didn't even do the twisting around thing. He tried to 'Desify' the name Katharine and spectacularly failed. So it comes across as racist, gross and ignorant. And objectively not going to lie, it has ugly sounding syllables. We have such pretty names with amazing meanings in our culture and CVD went with Kathani???

So unlike my parents and most Indian parents, her name wasn't picked carefully and with intent at all. It was a lazy attempt to make Katharine an Indian name. Like he knows Christian Indians existed back then in India right? She could have stayed a Katharine. Edwina kept her white name!

Okay so your last few points, that's the thing though I haven't seen enough disappointment. Yall heard Kathani once for like a second in one episode and just ran with it. Like why??? Before the show, NO ONE used Katharine to the extent yall are using Kathani. That's why it's very uncomfortable to see it plastered everywhere.

"Let people do what they want" Okay yeah then let me be pissed about it and rant on my blog. You don't see me going to people's ask box and telling them to remake their posts with Kate or Katharine. All I'm asking is for the fandom to consider why they like using Kathani so much when it's not even the name Kate chose for herself.

Okay so semantics of naming Kate during writing and the fandom fetishing the name Kathani aside, this is another point I want to bring up. It just feels weird and disrespectful that yall are just running with this name because within the canonverse we have confirmation that Kate prefers to go by Kate.

Adding this excellent point made by @jeanvanjer: "It just makes no sense when prior to S2 she was just Kate (in the fandom) and like @hella-sirius Dani said, even when she’s on her death bed would her family use the name Kathani? It would’ve been something if they actually showed us why she doesn’t use her “real” name but they don’t. Literally when Anthoy called her Kathani I was like “Whooo? Who the fuck is that?” (this line cracked me the fuck up I love you Zaira!)

If she liked Kathani so much she would have gone by that. She would have been introduced to the queen as Miss Kathani Sharma but she was not. Kate is clearly the name she chose for herself so let's just respect that and use it.

In conclusion, Kathani is an ugly fucking name created by a white guy who didn't think twice about naming conventions in our culture and using it constantly feels very tokenising and weird in a fetish way. So please if you guys are really open to listening to Indian voices and giving us space to talk about our experiences within the fandom, this is the time. Listen to us when we say using Kathani all the time is gross and racist. Just call her Katharine and Kate I'm begging you all. Desi writers, if you really want an Indian name for her find an existing prettier one with a meaningful name that fits her.

If you're reading this you're probably my mutual or one of my favourite blogs.

I have made one mistake in my life and it has been a major one! I started chatting with this guy on tumblr, then we shifted to discord. Soon the texts turned risky and I told him I wasn't interested. It was fine after that but then a few days later he started texting such stuff again. I could have blocked him when I had the chance but I didn't. Now recently my sister opened my discord and read our chats... she has everything screenshotted and it is serving as excellent blackmail material.

The problem is that I am the oldest daughter in a desi family. I am supposed to be the model child. It is my younger sister who has the screenshots. Every time my parents scold her she is compared to me and I am scared that she is going to tell them everything when this happens.

She has been ruling over me ever since she got the screenshots and there is nothing I can do about it. I can't sleep and then the next day I am either sleepy during classes or am thinking about this. I have also started having a few anxiety attacks, but she doesn't get it!

I know that I am equally to blame in this, and the situation might have escalated if she hadn't caught me. I have already thanked her enough and accepted that I have been very stupid and immature. I just want to tell all this to someone I trust and hold them for a while just to get comfort. The problem is that the people I trust will scold me, it will be for my good only, but I just need comfort without questions for a while...

Also, what should I tell my mom? When should I tell my mom? All my gadgets will be taken and I will probably get disowned!

I'm writing this in your ask box because for some reason my DMs are being stupid and not opening. My name's Kai, I go by Shearmouth on AO3, and I've been a rabid follower of "cloaked" since I found it around chapter 4's posting. I've already left you several reviews, but I wanted to reach out and let you know again how much this story means to me, and how grateful I am to you for creating it, so you can have a loving message from one of your readers to take into the new year (and on your much-deserved hiatus!) with you.

Trigger warning for CSA and its associated shittiness.

When I was 10 I was molested by a very close family member. Due to life circumstances, I didn't really have a way to get away from this person, and the response of my primary caregiver at the time was to kinda sweep it under the rug. Luckily it didn't happen again, but the body keeps the score and all that. 10 years later, during covid, the trauma started surfacing in therapy. I've spent the last 2 years working on it. I have been told by the same caregiver I confided in when it first happened to keep it to myself, don't talk about it, keep the peace in the family. There was a long time where I felt deeply broken, tainted almost. Like I never truly would heal from it. And I was so angry that it ever happened at all.

Though I've made tons of progress since then, I still find enormous catharsis in fanfic featuring sexual abuse and recovery. A few stand out, but yours is at the top of the list, despite being barely half posted. I've said it before but I'll say it again– your handling of the subject matter is nothing short of masterful. This is heavy, heavy shit. But you manage to say it out loud and look it in the face in a way that's both agonizing, and deeply moving. Maverick's reaction to his abuse is familiar to anyone who's gone through something like it, I think. The shame, the terror, the dread. Feeling like you've been dirtied beyond hope. That your friends and loved ones see you reduced to only what was done to you. And the rage. All that rage, with nowhere to go.

Maverick feels all this and more, and in the beginning it was torture to watch him go through it alone. As Ice slowly earns his trust again and works his way back into his heart, we see Maverick starting to let him in and lean on him. And Ice, flawed and frightened as he may be, is showing up for Maverick. He's standing by him through that terror and shame and rage. And we're seeing Maverick soften into it and accept that love from Ice.

So many people don't get that. So many people go through this alone, from start to finish. I was lucky. I have two amazing friends who stood by me, and a few excellent therapists. But even with them, working through this has seen me lonelier than at almost any other point in my life. I can't imagine how hard it is for survivors who truly don't have anyone. But here we get to see Mav accept the help, and start to move toward the path of healing. Ice, of course, can't fix this for him. But he can have his back. And that is invaluable. He's there for Mav even when Mav is being pissy and scared and angry and all the nasty emotions one tends to feel in the wake of such a traumatic experience. Thank you for giving that to him, and vicariously, to me. I can't wait to watch them heal, separately and together.

I'm rambling a bit, but the point is this: the story that you're making is incredibly profound. It's expertly executed. It's gripping and moving and heartbreaking. And for me, coming to it with my history, it's extremely cathartic. I'm so grateful to you for putting this into the world. Thank you.

I wait with bated breathed for the next chapter (even tho I'm scared, wtf does negative comfort even MEAN AUGH IM FRIGHTENED), and I'll be counting the days until February or whenever you come off hiatus! I hope you enjoy a well-deserved rest from this beast, and in the meantime happy new year!

as for everything else- im also relieved that this story resonates with you! truth be told i was nervous about posting the first chapter bc its such a dark subject matter and we know what purity culture is like these days. don't discuss sensitive issues, don't put it in your fic, etc etc etc. i have my own opinions on these but in all honesty, cloaked was just going to be a straightforward retelling of tgm in tg86 squad's perspective until i came across a story handling rape/non-con..... not well. at all. and its not the first fandom ive seen this be handled in a way thats... just not to my liking, lets leave it at that. so believe it or not cloaked came about half out of spite and half out of personal reasons (i think i said some of it in my reply to you lol)

anyway thank YOU for sharing your story with me and please believe me when I say you're not alone!! a huge part of cloaked is the arc of mav coming to realise he doesn't have to deal with his trauma by himself. he has people around him (not just ice), and eventually, they push him to get the help he needs (is this a spoiler? nvm idc lmao). trust me, i put careful thought into it for a reason! thank YOU for realising it and coming to terms with it :') you're definitely not alone and anytime you feel as such, seek out help! my dms are always open too :D

An update:

I've watched all 20 available episodes of Mere HumSafar this weekend. Awaiting Episod 21. I have a love-hate relationship with the drama: the female lead does nothing but cry (in real life she'd have such a dehydration and electrolyte problem!) but it stars Farhan Saeed. I think, in the end, the show is an excellent study in the way female power dynamics in shared households [in desi cultures] usually revolve around the men (either in the form of control or sympathy).

I've basically given up on Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai -- not even the cuteness of the leads could keep me engaged.

This has extended my lifespan by about two years.

It's been a month since the Kesariya teaser and yet the full song hasn't been released yet?!?!

I'm in the middle of rewatching Hwarang, still amazing!

And here's part 2 of my June reading roundup - these are all the contemporary books I read last month:

I Kissed Shara Wheeler by Casey McQuiston

Having read and loved this author’s well-known debut, Red, White and Royal Blue, I was looking forward to this. I’m happy to say it lives up to the hype.

Our heroine Chloe Green is a young queer girl at a private religious school. It’s not an easy place for her to be, but it’s the best school in the area. She’s managed to find a niche with her outsider friends. Now high school is almost over and Chloe is this close to being valedictorian.

The only thing that stands in her way is Shara Wheeler: the popular daughter of the school principal. Their relationship is that of academic rivals. Then, out of the blue, Shara kisses Chloe - and then she disappears.

Shara leaves behind a series of clues to the last 3 people she kissed - her boyfriend, the boy next door, and Chloe. They work together to find her… but naturally, they also find FEELINGS along the way!

I like to call this bisexual belligerence - bi-ligerance for short. It’s when a bi girl is overly competitive with another girl, only to realize it’s because she has feelings for her. At first I wasn’t sure about Shara’s motivation, but the more we got to know her in her absence, the more compelling the story became. 

Overall this was a very enjoyable read - McQuiston has done it again!

2. Debating Darcy by Sayantani DasGupta

I’m back at it again with the Austen retellings. 

This time around, the story of Pride and Prejudice is reimagined with Lizzy Bennet and Mr. Darcy - called Leela Bose and Firoze Darcy - are competitors on rival speech and debate teams. 

Leela’s ragtag public school team is pitted against teams from private schools, which I thought was an excellent way of re-contextualizing the class conflict from the original novel. The Bennet family is reimagined as Leela’s teammates: Mr. and Mrs. Bennet are the teachers in charge. Mrs. Bennet still suffers from overactive nerves - another fun aside from the book. The Bennet sisters are now Leela’s teammates, as are the stand-ins for Mr. Collins and Charlotte Lucas. The Bingley siblings are on the rival team, along with the odious Mr. Wickham. The esteemed Lady Catherine makes an appearance as the elocution coach.

Another thing I loved about this retelling was the diversity: Leela is desi and Darcy is biracial. Wickham - Jishu in this version - is the same ethnicity as Leela. But Jishu is every bit as villainous here as he was in the original. He’s reimagined as a serial sexual harasser, which casts an unflattering spotlight on the problem of sexism and harassment in the real-life speech and debate world.

Overall this was a cute retelling that made excellent usage of the academic rivals to lovers trope.

3. The Guncle by Steven Rowley

This was a very wholesome story about a gay uncle - aka guncle - who gets more than he bargained for when he has to look after his niece and nephew for the summer after their mother dies and their father goes to rehab. Always the fun uncle, Patrick has never had to look after the kids for an extended period of time. He’s a washed up actor who is semi-retired in Palm Springs after his successful show went off the air. He’s been going through the motions of life since his partner died. Gradually Patrick and the kids find their own ways to cope with their grief and figure out how to move forward.

I teared up several times reading this book. It was deeply satisfying and cathartic. You will laugh, you will cry. I know I did!

Popsugar Reading Challenge: A book that fulfills a prompt from a past Popsugar Reading Challenge - in this case, it’s “A book that should be made into a movie”. This would be such a good movie!
