Naruto AU where Uchiha Sasuke is not The Cool DudeTM  who swears a lot, but the biggest nerd you have ever seen.
The dork grew up in a giant extended family who were very traditional and probably got scolded for saying darn.
Idiot (affectionate) was later on hell bent on getting revenge. So I need you tell me he sometimes didn't stay awake at when his poshy rich kid persona resurfaced out of the trauma and he had a little whatamidoingwhydididothatwhatwouldeveryonethinkofme- moment.
Heck, the only reason he was seen as the cool kid in school, was cuz it was school. we all cringe looking back at it.
I'm just saying, Sasuke probably spent all his time in Konoha either talking like an old man or a rich kid with a poshy ascent.

We don’t talk about this scene enough
Aleksander, approaching Alina with her guards having just received the news of the stag and seen the tracker, already planning to celebrate taking over the other nations using the fold and testing one final time to see if the tracker is who he claims he is and if he is any threat to his other plans with Alina: *Offers flowers* For you.
Kaz and Inej, disguised as Alina’s guards, having just gotten rid of Arken who was going to betray them, having nearly died many times, knowing dang well that Jesper is sleeping with the stable boy as he was suppossed to be their get-away driver and were just about to kidnap Alina: *Side-eyes with an ‘Is This Guy Serious’ look*
Alina, blissfully ignorant of all the attempts to kill and/or kidnap her that are currently taking place, that one of her friends have been murdered, her childhood friend that she thought had given up on her is on the palace after nearly dying so many times just to talk to her, all the people around her want to use her but for different reasons and the the fact that her entire life is going to get thrown into a roller coaster in a few hours: *Taking the flowers* Thank you.

yall, sometimes i forget how much funny the darkling can be. like we don’t give him enough credit for it.
like i know he is the big bad guy who did a lot of horrible stuff but every time he makes an appearance i get all giddy to see what dramatic shit this bastard is going to do now.
like that one scene in Siege And Storm: where he personally took Alina to her cabin and through the prison and one time she tripped and he “put his hand on the small of her back to steady her and didn’t let go”. for what? just to make Mal jealous? “You’ll know when I make her scream.” (sir????????????)
and then Rule Of Wolves comes out and i actually got to read his POV and ooooh boy, i was not dissapointed.
Aleksander, watching his army of fateful Starless gather and prepare to follow his orders and march to the northern front of the war: Never in my centuries long life have i ever regretted being sober more than I do now at this moment.
and in the final fight with the fjerdans where he arrives with his cult to get favor and popularity for Zoya and in Nikolai’s POV he was like,
Aleksander: ;)
Nikolai: Did that bastard just fvking WINK-
like, hes funny man

Sakura, abt Sasuke: How do you think we can trust him?! May I remind you thet he tried to kill us before!
Sai: He did try to kill me.
Naruto: He also tried to kill me on several occasions.
Naruto: There was this one time when we were genin and her turned himself into a frog 'cuz he knew I love frogs. And I was like "Ooo a frog!". And I picked it up to admire it.
Naruto: Then he turned back into himself and was like "Blearg! It's me!" and then he stabbed me.
Everyone:
Naruto: We were twelve at that time.

today it was revealed that a white woman in brownface was amita suman’s stunt double in shadow and bone.
at a time when hollywood is preaching to stop aapi hate the show has shown us, twice so far, that they don't care about our community. by having a south asian coded character make racist remarks towards an east asian coded character they added nothing to the plot or character development- all they did was try to create a divide between our communities. this hurt more especially because zoya was never racist in the books.
they condoned putting a stuntwoman in brownface because they couldn't be bothered to find a desi stuntwoman for amita. there are truly so many talented desi dancers and acrobats out there but shadow and bone refused to cast accurately solely because stuntwomen are supposed to show up in blurry or fast moving shots, making it "easier" to rely on brownface. this speaks volumes about how much they care about diversity.
for a show that has been praised for representation and diversity and was going to mean so much for asian viewers, shadow and bone failed to deliver time and time again, showing us that all we can count on when it comes to south asian representation in hollywood is constant disrespect and racism.
netflix and leigh bardugo along with the rest of the showrunners and writers marketed the show as being a diverse fantasy but were surrounded by a team that approved brownface should tell you all you need to know about how much they respected desi people in the first place. so many south asians were excited to finally see themselves onscreen in inej and zoya, especially as the show was praised by reviewers and writers as being diverse and accurate representation and this is what we got.
amita was so excited to play inej, a strong brown woman whose identity was not solely defined by her race and i can’t imagine how she felt watching a white woman paint herself brown so that she could perform stunts that amita had trained for as well. if anything, this proves that hollywood’s pushing of diversity on screen does nothing to help poc and representation unless that same diversity exists behind the camera.

I need people to not talk over me or other brown people when we say we are absolutely GUTTED about the fact that Amita had to watch a white woman in brownface peform the stunts she TRAINED FOR!
Inej Ghafa was so important to us! To me! She is a badass brown girl who stays loving and compassionate despite the trauma she faces, she defends herself and she holds on to her faith and she falls in love and she puts herself first and has goals and aims and is unapologetically herself! She's so dynamic and real and flawed and human and perfect! She made me feel SEEN in a way no other character in fiction ever has! I finally felt like I could write about a protagonist like myself and be well received one day! I found out Amita was cast and how passionate she was about Inej in the same way we all are!
Amita put her heart and soul into Inej and we LOVE HER for it! She performed her role MAGNIFICENTLY and worked so hard to be able to do it. She reread the book multiple times! She trained for the acrobatics and the knife skills all on her own even before the show started filming! She gained literal scars because of how hard she worked! She gave Inej Ghafa her all because like us, she finally felt SEEN in a piece of media and wanted to do her justice and She DID!
And then we all find out that we now have to share Inej Ghafa with a WHITE WOMAN who did BROWNFACE and the showrunners and producers just let it happen?? That Amita had to be told that all her hard work wasn't enough and that instead of a brown stunt woman, a white woman was brought instead and she had to sit and watch HER character be performed by someone who doesn't even understand the importance of her?
It feels disgusting. Inej feels tainted. Like she isn't OURS anymore. Like she doesn't belong to us brown girls anymore when we had been waiting for her for so long!
And to know that Amita trained SO HARD and ended up having to smile through the pain when a white stunt double was donning her skin color to do a stunt a BROWN stunt woman deserved to have been given the opportunity to perform, even if Amita couldn't fit the requirements for whatever reason? Inej Ghafa belongs to the brown women. She deserved to be shared with only a brown woman as a stunt double. She deserved to be played by a fellow brown woman who understood her significance!
It's disgusting. It's appalling and I HATE everyone who had a hand in making this happen. My stomach roiled in disgust when I found out. I wanted to scream and cry. Amita was so brave for having to tolerate that happen and be unable to do anything about it. I am so proud of her but the fact is she shouldn't HAVE to have experienced that kind of racism as part of her job to bring Inej to life for us.
And on top of that, they made Zoya, another brown girl in the show, racist for absolutely NO REASON. It served 0 plot purpose. The show would have been exactly the same without it. This character trait didn't even exist for Zoya in the books.
Please do NOT talk over brown women when we say that we are tired and hurt and upset and angry! Please help us hold Netflix accountable because in no way is this okay! Netflix and Eric and Leigh have been toting Shadow and Bone for diversity points and meanwhile have been silencing their poc cast in the background and forcing them to watch as more and more opportunities slip by them. As they are told once again that what they can do is nothing compared to what a white person can do.
Amita Suman deserves better. Desi women deserve better. POC deserve better.
AND as a note cuz I've seen white people talk about this: we DO NOT want the show cancelled! Thats avoiding the problem! Not fixing it! We demand a better production crew. There are so many POC in this cast: Archie, Jessie, Kit, Sujaya and Amita have put their heart and soul into these characters despite the racism behind the scenes. They deserve to continue to play these characters they love and put so much hard work into bringing to life while the production crew that's being racist behind the scenes get sacked!
Edit: Non POC can absolutely reblog this! I made this post so people would know and so that the message about how not okay this is could spread. I encourage you all to please help raise our voices because some days it feels no one else cares but us, especially when it comes to desi people.

Okay I've noticed so many fanfic writers, artists and the Grishaverse fandom in general always misinterpret Inej Ghafa.
Fanfic writers almost always write her either too edgy and emotionless.
Artists almost always water down on Inej's features and draw her in her Wraith outfit. But don't draw her as much with her hair down or in pretty outfits.
Inej is described as this lovely girl with gorgeous long hair and beautiful brown eyes and a laugh that Kaz Brekker wants to get drunk on.. So WHY DOES IT FEEL LIKE WRITERS/ARTISTS HESITATE IN WRITING/DRAWING HER ALL THAT SMILEY & CUTE & FEMININE!?
Not once in the entire duology has she expressed any dislike or discomfort towards dresses. She's only ever stated that she despises the “fake silks” that she was forced to adorn at the menagerie. One of these things is not like the other. She has never stated that she hates dresses in general, just the menagerie silks.
And so as a Desi person who has suffered trauma myself, when people just ignore writing/drawing Inej's soft side, not only does it come off as disrespectful and sexist..but also:
• Toxic Girlboss-ification
You only see her as your typical “knife-wife” who is too cool and unemotional (which is just you projecting because she's actually seen in books to have a very adorable side; she has fun with Jesper & Nina, she blushes at Kaz)
• Blatant sexism and perverse fetishising of trauma
“Inej isn't allowed to feel feminine because she was r*ped and exploited”.
Its like you're indirectly saying “she suffered so she doesn't want to wear pretty dresses or feel feminine anymore”.
And thats honestly disgusting and hypocritical. Because another poc in the fandom— Zoya— is drawn in varying styles. Did she not suffer? She did. Do fans reduce Zoya to her trauma? They don't. Do people keep themselves from portraying Zoya in pretty dresses or varying makeovers? ABSOLUTELY NOT!
Then why such weird treatment towards Inej?
Headcanons are fine. But projecting said headcanons and treating them as canon is fcking wrong.
Inej is a multifaceted character, a very human character. She isn't insensitive or emotionless. And she never said she hated dresses.
So I'm requesting fanfic writers, artists and the fans that bully them to not write/draw Inej a certain way, TO STOP.
I request everyone to treat Inej like she is written in books. I REQUEST FANS TO STOP REDUCING INEJ TO HER TRAUMA. I request fans to write/draw her as the Wraith but also in pretty dresses, smiling and goofing around like the teen she is. She is deadly yet soft. She can kill if needed but just as easily blush at compliments. She is an amazing spider and an assassin but that doesn't take away from her femininity.

Desi woman here.
I don't know if I want to talk about this or not because brown women are so used to being silenced in activist and supposedly "supportive" spaces but I realise that if I don't speak up rn,this might continue. It's just my opinion and I don't know how to talk about all this without coming off as stupid. But I've had enough.
A white woman being a stunt double for a brown woman is something I can live with. But what hurt me the most is painting that white woman brown. As a brown woman,I've always been told "if only you were lighter in skintone" "you were so much fairer when you were a kid, what happened" and it really hurt me as a child, made me believe in the notion that fair=beautiful. My younger sister, who's only 13,went through the same version of this in a much worse way because she's darker than the rest of us. People always told her she wasn't as pretty because she was darker but mind you, she's the most beautiful girl I've ever seen. And the smartest in her entire grade. I love her and she loves herself, which was a struggle on her part because the same notion took over her mind too. The fact that there are so many South Asian people they could've chosen from rather than brown-facing is so fucking infuriating.
It's so disappointing how brown and black people are treated unfairly because of the colour of their skin, endure years of self loathe and judgement and unfair treatment because of the stereotypes attached to us based on SOLELY our skin. But what's much worse is seeing the same white people who we are taught are better than us,more beautiful than us because they're white, paint themselves in shades of brown and black and no one bats a fucking eyelash. The thing we are shamed for is just paint to them,it will get off their skin. But we would continue to be given side eyes or treated differently because of how dark or light we are.
I remember tearing up just looking at Amita and Sujaya because brown representation in mainstream media is rare and when present,it takes up only after the stereotypes attached to us. Especially in fantasy, you don't find any brown representation at all. So seeing Inej and Zoya made me happier than you think. So if the show is cancelled,I don't know how long it will take for me to see two brown women in iconic and important roles in a fantasy series.
Amita trained so hard for Inej, the fact that she had to see this happen is so disheartening. I can make a list of South Asian stunt coordinators and doubles and the fact that there would be enough of them for the production crew to choose from rather than turning a white woman brown is mind boggling. I'm sorry for every South Asian person who applied for the job. Inej is SO important to every brown girl,to me,to everyone who wants to be badass and still have more heart than everyone combined. She's our hero and she deserves better. Amita, desi women and POC deserve better than this.
I love the show and cancelling it won't solve anything, holding the right people accountable would be the best thing to do. Shadow and Bone deserves a better production crew. Cancelling the show would be avoiding the root problem. It's been noticed from the start how Leigh and Eric have been trying to score woke points for the cast being so diverse and then pull shit like this shows how much they respect desis in the first place. We should be included because we EXIST. Showing people who already exist is the bare fucking minimum and if you're not portraying them as they are in mainstream media or think portraying them is very brave of you then you are in fact a part of the problem. They casted my girl and said "that's enough brown representation for today ❤️" and I really hate them for it.
It's not diversity if the writers room is white. It's not diversity if the stunt crew is white. It's not diversity if the production and management crew is white. If your diversity and inclusion is only limited to the screen, then it's performative.
Netflix,do better. You're not an ally if you keep on making these mistakes and then apologizing again and again. That's manipulation. We expect better. We deserve better.

Desi Grishaverse Headcanons
• inej would sing hindi lullabies to her and kaz's child (this is, of course, many years post ck when both of them have healed enough)
• inej teaches wylan a few hindi songs and he plays them every weekend when all the crows gather for dinner. he loves them a lot and soon starts writing his own songs (he has to ask inej for help because she's still teaching him how to speak hindi but he gets better at it). he has written many songs for jesper.
• you know that thing where character a says something to character b in a different language and character b asks what they said so character a just makes some bs up but actually they were just confessing something? yeah, that. imagine that with kanej. inej says something really poetic + romantic in hindi to kaz when she first leaves ketterdam and kaz obviously doesn't know what she said. so he tries to translate it. when he realises she was saying that she loves him, he says it back in the next letter he sends her.
• every year before holi, nina forces all of the crows to meet at the hendriks mansion to make gunjhiyas.
• jesper once slipped some bhaang in kaz's thandai and let's just say that no one ever speaks about what happened that day because they don't want to risk loosing their limbs to dirtyhands.
• nina and jesper LOVE qawwali. every once in while all the dregs divide into two groups (half side with jesper and the other half with nina) and they have a qawwali competition at the crow club. kaz is done with everybody's shit on that day because the entire club is pure chaos but their little show attracts a lot of visitors so he doesn't interrupt. and when the noise gets too much for him he sneaks up to the roof and sits outside. inej soon joins him and they spend the night on the roof, looking at the stars.
• inej loves lighting dhoop-batti or agar-batti in her room. when kaz gets to know she's about to return, he always lights a few in her room beforehand.
• inej writes hindi poetry while she's on the warith and sends them to kaz.
• as a child, inej used to steal her mother's dupatta and wrap it around herself like a saree so when inej sees her child doing the same, she can't help but tear up and smile.
• nina has taken up new ways of annoying kaz so she always hangs neembo mirchi on the doorknob of his office to "ward off negative energy". and every time kaz gets sick, nina insists it is because of "buri nazar" and suggests doing one of the nuskhas (if you've never had you dadi or nani or any other auty try to rid you of the "nazar" are you even desi?)
• we've talked enough about kaz in a kurta, but what about kaz wearing a DHOTI??? inej is teaching him how to wear it and jesper barges into the room and laughs his ass off until he's kicked out by kaz with a threat to keep his mouth shut.
• when everybody meets at the hendriks mansion, nina and inej insist on oiling their the boys' hair while inej tells them different stories (nina makes sure to comment on kaz's hair which leads to an argument until inej shuts them all up with a stern glare)
• wesper eating the same bhutta (you know how those cute couples drink something from the same tumblr with two straws? yeah, that. but with a bhutta) (fyi i got this idea after seeing a video of a hamster and a rabbit eating the same corn)
• nikolai loves eating biryani with his hands and he claims that whoever uses cutlery for it is stupid.
• genya has a huge collection of jhumkas, bangles, juttis, naths, maangteekas, etc.
• nikolai swearing in hindi. DO I NEED TO SAY ANYTHING MORE ABOUT THIS??!!
• genya doesn't like the quality of kohl available in ravka so she makes it for herself (she has some of it always sent to inej).
• we've already had a gajra headcanon for kanej so now it's time for zoyalai. Nikolai always makes gajras for zoya a day before he's about to arrive at the ravkan ports.
• zoya loves doing yoga and that's how every morning starts for her (she even forces nikolai to join her who's all grumpy about it but stops complaining as she starts doing the asanas. he's quite good at yoga but he deliberately messes up his posture so that zoya helps him. yk what i mean? ;))
• david once found an old radio and fixed it for genya. now she has it in her room and listens to it everyday.

You know what I would love to see on S&B S2? But I also don't trust the writers of that show to do a good job. Let's make Mal canonically mix-raced on the show and let Alina learn about her shu-han heritage. Season 2 gives them the best opportunities to do so. Before we start, there's a great post about how despite the books never saying anything about Alina and Mal's ethnicity, many people pictured them as poc (before the show casted them), here's the post.
For Alina, they wasted a huge potential on S1. One of the biggest flaws of S1 was that they used Alina being half-shu poorly, the weird racists remarks (even from canon characters of color) were unnecessary and Alina's heritage only mattered for like 2 episodes and then it was forgotten. If they truly want to do it right, S2 is literally the perfect opportunity with the introduction of Tamar and Tolya, two canon shu-han characters from the books. In S2 with Tamar and Tolya being shu and opently speaking the language, it would be amazing if they add a little bit of Alina learning about her heritage, a bit of the language and feeling connected to it. Like — it doesn't even have to be that much because the plot for that book is already packed but some little moments to remind the audience and Alina of her heritage.
As for Mal, before the show aired, the writers said that both Mal and Alina had their heritage as a bonding thing, but S1 completely forgot to mention Mal's heritage and people were left confused. I think Archie being desi would be an amazing oportunity to acknowledge Mal as a canon suli character (in his case, half-suli) just like Zoya and Inej. I don't expected them to do much about it, but just a little acknowledgement would be cool and I know it would meant a lot to people, specially those that always pictured Mal as a man of color.
But again, I don't trust the writers to do it.

as a south asian woman I can’t explain how much it means to have not only one, but TWO badass brown women in a young adult fantasy series. it makes me so proud to know that young desi girls will have characters like zoya and inej to look up to GOD I just love them both with my whole heart 😫💓

thoughts on (netflix's) shadow and bone from someone who's never read the books but has absorbed peripheral information from tumblr. spoiler warning(?)
overall pretty solid!
they failed to make me care about alina though. i was much more invested in the crows' storyline even though they achieved nothing they set out to do and won anyway, which is always my favorite type of plot
i know that malina vs darklina is a Very Important Debate in the grishaverse community so here's my opinions on it: the age gap definitely has a very weird vibe but mal has basically no personality aside from simping for alina so we ship darklina for the juicy dynamic and malina for the healthy childhood friends to lovers content
there's usually One Ship i center myself around for every fandom and for the grishaverse i've decided to dedicate myself to kanej
SPEAKING OF KANEJ. finally some good south asian (specifically desi) representation! i can't tell you how much it means to me. of course alina and mal are important too but INEJ MY QUEEN!
i can't comment on the queer rep because it's not my place but they pulled it off pretty casually - it didn't feel forced to me so +1 point
i can't decide if freddy carter's good-looking or not. what's going on with his face fam
they didn't do a very good job with properly showing the passage of time. logically i know it must've been at least a few months based on how many letters alina and mal sent but it felt like a few days ngl. it needed more episodes or longer episodes, just more room to breathe in general. i wouldn't have minded if they cut nina and matthias out entirely ngl
now for thoughts on each character individually!
like i said i didn't really care about alina? idk she has very generic protagonist vibes and she gave up mal pretty quickly for someone whose last sight of him was him hobbling after her screaming her name lol. also she was pretty reluctant to destroy the fold for someone whose parents it killed? it feels like they were going for the 'cinnamon roll who could kill you' vibe but since that's the personality of Every Female YA Protagonist Ever they failed to add that touch that would give her her own personality
mal! like i said, no personality aside from simping for alina. unrelatable, but his determination is sweet. they really romanticized his tracker abilities, didn't they? he managed to find the legendary stag no one had been able to find for hundreds of years What
i will now be simping for inej forever, thanks. queen. legend. her hair is literally so pretty
kaz… truly an exasperated dad. i love him. exactly my brand of Angsty Traumatized White Boy. beat the crusty old darkling with a magic trick. an icon
genya! ngl i wouldn't've been too pressed if she'd been the main character - someone so consumed by rightful revenge they're willing to hurt the people they care about to get it? overdone but still spicy with an added newness of rape survivors finally getting some healthy representation
jesper. a queer king. he and mal fight for custody of milo sometime off screen i don't CARE it wouldn't fit in universe that's what happened
zoya. her redemption felt a little rushed to me; like i said, they needed more time for stuff like this
matthias. we love a redemption and then nina accidentally destroying all that hard work lol
nina! queen! apparently she was supposed to be plus-sized though and that would've been very important so >:( to them cutting that. we love her changing matthias's mind on grisha by just being herself and then undoing that by also being herself
the darkling! mixed feelings. on the one hand he's an old man creeping on someone who barely looks legal on the other hand he's v pretty and his motives are very grey
and those are my thoughts on shadow and bone! i'll definitely be reading it but apparently six of crows is better so i won't get my hopes up (i even heard some saying the show was better)

ahh i really hope they give us the soc plotline in the show because nina and inej's interactions are so incredible and wholesome and had me low-key shipping them, and also genya, zoya and alina will all interact with each other and be friends soon, like in the books, unless of course showrunners decide to completely ruin zoya and ruin literally one of the only examples of good desi representation i, as a desi person, has ever had. i'm mad.
you must be already mad bc like... what they did to zoya in the first season... making her racist for no good reason at all. like literally the very first thing they decided to do with this character was to ruin her. and yeah, zoya does end up on good terms with alina but was all that crap really necessary?? and yes on the female friendships! like all of alina and genya’s interactions were so endearing and wholesome, and even that very small scene between alina and inej was so cute! i’d really love it if they kept on expanding these bonds

A not-so-gentle reminder that the following women are NOT INDIAN and SHOULD NOT be used in Indian faceclaims or Desi icon packs at all.
Tumblr media
Natalia Castellar is Puerto Rican but I've seen at least 7-8 instances of her being used as Parvati Patil or Padma Patil. I would link but don't want to start drama.
Tumblr media
Alisha Nesvat is a Russian, WHITE model who has been cast as Inej Ghafa, a South Asian coded DARK SKINNED brown woman.
Tumblr media
Golshifteh Farahani is an Iranian actress who is one of the top searches to turn up when you look for Parvati Patil aesthetics on Pinterest.
Tumblr media
Medalion Rahimi is an American-Iranian actress who has been interchangeably used for Zoya and Inej fancasts despite both being coded as South Asian/Romani.
Tumblr media
Aiysha Hart is a Saudi-Brit actress used for the Patil twins and in one case, as Laila in The Gilded Wolves. It's time to stop.
POC are not interchangeable and it's incredibly disrespectful that y'all talk so much of live and let live but wouldn't do a proper research before editing one of the meagre handful of Desi characters we have.
Aside this, we always talk about how white women or white faceless images or not to be used for poc character moodboards. When I made my Tonks mb and Parvati mb, I made sure to use only such images that wouldn't whitewash the characters. However many people make a mb about say, Cho Chang or Angelina Johnson and then include pictures of white people in them. THIS IS NOT RIGHT. When you make edits of POC, RESTRICT YOURSELF TO THEM. please. One reverse Google search is all it takes to not be insensitive.
