There's a ringing in his head that won't stop. There's blood on his hands. On his teeth. In his throat. He can feel the low, dull throb of pain. His ribs. His hands. A shoulder, a knee. He watches the blood drip, splash, pool between his feet.

The thing that lives in the hollow in his chest is quiet. The roaring pressure that had been building in the weeks, months, since they first set foot on Ilus has dissipated. He can't decide if the silence is better, or worse.

He can hear the commotion in the Roci's med bay, can hear the familiar timbre of Holden's voice and Naomi's, can hear the intermittent beeps and chirps of the autodoc. Murtry was still breathing, or had been when they'd finally pulled the two of them apart. They were both as tough as they were mean, Amos guessed. Holden would be upset if Murtry didn't make it back to Earth to stand trial. He guessed they'd cross that bridge if they had to.

He knows there's words. Closer to him, where he sits in the galley, watching dispassionately as his blood pools on the floor. He'd have to make sure that got cleaned up before long or it'd get everywhere, gum up the works. He knows that there's words. A voice that he knows. A voice that makes the hollow in his chest ache, but it's just. One more pain on the pile and all he can feel right now is nothing.

I discovered this book when looking for Jewish YA books to read next, but I was misled by the faulty algorithm in Google searching. I fell for it because the author's name is Naomi, a common Jewish name. This is not a Jewish book, but it is queer! It certainly wasn't my favorite, and the audiobook had its own problems, but I believe the controversy surrounding it is a bit harsh. I think people were judging the book for the wrong reasons. Yet, I don't believe I would recommend this book to most people.

We Are Totally Normal is about Nandan, a Desi teen in California who is figuring himself out and making mistakes while doing so. He sees the world of high school in a sociological way. The school's elite are "The 99" and everyone has a role in the school and each other's lives. Everyone values different things, which Nadan uses to his advantage. He desires close friendships with the girls in his life, to be seen as indistinguishable from them. He also wants a relationship with Dave, a cute nerdy boy on the fringes of “The 99”. Unfortunately for both Dave and Nandan, Nandan has no idea what his queer identity is or if he even has one.

I was not very far into the book when I realized it wasn't going to be Jewish, so I started looking for reviews online to see if that was true. While there, I discovered that people have some very heated opinions about the book and the characters. This, more than anything, compelled me to read the whole book. I wanted to have my own take added into the mix. Those that have negative feelings towards the book as a whole can be forgiven, but I believe those that took their issues with the characters out on the book are misguided. Many found Nandan to be manipulative, annoying, and not worthy of Dave. They also found the popular girl, Avani, to have no redeeming qualities and that it didn't make sense for Nandan to defend her. I personally don't think that characters have to be good or likable for a book to be well written. I also think that focusing on the faults of a few characters distracted reviewers from the fact that all the characters were flawed (outside of Nandan's mom).

Interviews with the author (linked at the bottom) prove that Kanakia didn't want a clean teen romance. The messiness, uncertainty, and lack of cuteness was intended. I didn't fault We Are Totally Normal for any of these things. However, I still didn't like the book very much. I truly wanted to, but neither the story nor the audiobook were kind to the reader. The audiobook was poorly balanced in terms of sound, especially for a shorter book like this. I struggled to hear Dave and couldn't turn the sound down soon enough for Nandan or his friend Mari. The story felt unresolved in the end and it was difficult to keep some of the characters straight. I also felt that the running gag's pay off was anticlimactic. These are the reasons I rated this book a 3.5/5.

Overall, I don't think this book is terrible or worthy of controversy, but you can probably skip it in favor of one of the author interviews below. Naomi Kanakia is a joy and learning what went into the book behind the scenes was nice. If you do choose to read We Are Totally Normal, keep in mind that it was never intended to be a sweet romance.

A: Aphrodisiac (What encourages or entices them to make a move?)

I answered how Archibald decides to make a move, so instead I will talk about what things he finds specifically attractive hoohoo.

With Likely, he loves the deep brown of her eyes. They remind him of chocolate and of the healthy earth in the Surface. Many things in the Neath exist in one of the stages of decay. So she reminds him of life and health.

He also finds honesty very attractive. People who do not play games with others and who state what they think. There is an atmosphere of manipulation in the Neath and he tires of it especially after spending years in the Vatican.

H: Handsy (When they can’t keep their hands to themselves)

I answered for Archibald, so I'll respond with what happens when Likely can't behave. She's the type who would want to kiss him in public whether it be a chaste kiss or a passionate one. She also doesn't shy away from kissing him or holding his hand in front of their son (whereas he wouldn't show any physical affection toward her with their child around. He's very much a proper Victorian that believes in strict rules around interaction with one's offspring. He can't have his kid knowing that he -gasp!- holds his beloved's hand!)

At a soiree, Likely is also the type to get handsy under the table or want to pull him into a sideroom.

U: Undressing (Strip teasing a partner)

The problem with this one is that the Victorians had such complicated outfits LOL. Likely would find Archibald most attractive when he is in his breeches (possibly undone... showing a bit of treasure trail hoho!) and a simple shirt. It's a much different look from his full uniform he wears while at sea or in polite society. He values maintaining the social pecking order and appearance is very much a part of that. So when he wants to show Likely his desire for her, any deviation from his uniform is a way for him to show off.

As for what Likely could do for Archibald, he is highly titillated by being able to take her outfits apart himself. The slow pulling of a glove, the hands trailing the way to the top of a stocking, gently undoing a corset. These are all things he very much desires.

T: Teasing (Who’s the tease in the relationship? What do they do? How often?)

The Likely Lass is very much the tease in the relationship. She is the type to squeeze his leg under the table while at a dinner. She also loves to push boundaries of what she can divulge of their relationship with her friends and the PDA they share. This is definitely an occasional sore spot due to Archibald having grown up in a much more rigid society. Social expectations have loosened a bit since London Fell, but as he was born on the Surface, he doesn't necessarily share many of the same views as Likely who was born a Neathy.

J: Jealous (“Claiming” a partner)

I already answered how gifts are the way Archibald claims a partner. So for Likely, she is the type to give him a very sentimental gift to remember her by while at Zee. For example, she gives him a locket with her hair in it.

I also headcanon that the Zee has telegram lines placed by the Light Boats (I didn't research telegrams for an hour to not use it hehe). With this, I believe Likely would send Archibald messages occasionally when she can afford to pay operators to send her telegrams. Just messages to remind him of what is waiting for him.

She's also the type to give him a huge sending off when he heads back out. I'm talking coming to Wolfstack Docks in full mourning gear and refusing to let him go until the very last moment where she passionately kisses him in front of all the crew. This always frustrates Archibald as he has a reputation with the crew to maintain, but he doesn't have the heart or the true desire to stop her. It would disturb him if he had nobody to say goodbye to or that cared for him.

He's still not used to the idea of someone waiting for him. He'd never had anybody he'd been with that wasn't already berthed where he was, or had been interested enough to care about when he came and went. He couldn't blame Desi for assuming that Holden was to blame for what had gone wrong out there -- Amos had his own doubts, usually unvoiced, now and then about Holden's habitual button pressing, and Amos knew that he wasn't always the best judge of good and bad decisions, but there were times Amos was pretty sure the Cap had left any sense he had back on Eros.

But he didn't understand why Desi had chosen here, and now, to confront Holden... He closed the distance to Des, a large hand settling down on a shoulder, trying to get Desi to just - breathing seemed like a good recommendation, right? "Hey." A light squeeze of his fingers. "Believe it or not, the cap didn't fuck up on this one." He meant it better than it sounded. A moment's tilt of his head, his attention settling back on Desi. Worried... about him? "I'm good. One piece." He gestures to himself as his hand slides away. A few bruises and bumps but he barely even registered them. "It's all good."
