I haven't watched the 2016 MacGyver reboot for a while [I don't even know of there is still a fandom on Tumblr for it] and I've decided to rewatch it. I'm already remembering certain things that I had forgotten. If you're interested, spoilers under the cut.

The first three and a half seasons with the core cast of Mac, Riley, Jack, Matty and Bozer were just amazing. The cast chemistry was really good, and the show never really recovered from George Eads leaving. Jack really was the heart of the show.

I will never understand why they put Desi and Max together, the relationship was really toxic and Lucas and Levi didn't have chemistry imo. The whole Mac and Desi relationship is at the expense of Mac's already established relationships tbh.

I never really kept up behind the scenes stuff, but did Lucas and Justin have beef at one point? I noticed in the latter episodes, that Mac and Bozers supposed life long friendship just vanished and Mac always seem annoyed at Bozer for just existing. In fact Mac very rarely has a scene that doesn't involve Desi, and that is annoying. At least let him interact with other characters. I wonder if this is something they really wanted to address if they had got a season 6.

I love Matty. Meredith is brilliant at playing her. Matty is one of my favourite characters.

I genuinely don't mind Russ Taylor. He's a good and mysterious addition. Henry did well.

Every new episode of Macgyver I watch makes me hate desi more. I jumped on the Macgyver train late and I was sort of biased against desi from the beginning, having seen what other people said about her. But she just continues to exceed my expectations in the worst way possible.

The first time we see her, she breaks into his house when he’s vulnerable and practically naked. She spent a decent portion of the conversation looking up and down his body, which is weird. It’s not instant chemistry or early attraction because he looks annoyed at best. Then she commented on how much he’s wearing and like mocking him for being in a towel in his own house after a shower? He was clearly uncomfortable and it felt very much like sexual harassment.

In 3:16 they’re on a mission that’s emotional and personal for Mac. She asks him about his feelings, then immediately tells him to shove it in a box and stop being a baby. Because “needed him to get it out of his system.” She doesn’t care about his feelings, she was just asking because she felt he needed managing and she was the only one around. It feels very mocking, manipulative, condescending, and insensitive.

In 3:17 they need to act out a fight. He starts trying to actually ACT it out without hurting desi and she turns around and smacks him in the face. I’ve seen the fandom play it off as a feminist thing almost? Like “Mac doesn’t want to hurt fragile little desi and she sure shows him!” but there was no need for them to actually hurt each other. After like the 4th time she’s hit him, shoved him against the wall, let him smack into things dragging him etc, he starts hitting back and then they play it off as sexy banter. I don’t think lack of care for other people is cute or sexy. Sure he can take it, but he obviously doesn’t like it so why should he have to? He even comments on it, and she plays it off “little enthusiastic, don’t you think?/just getting into character.” He can’t stop everything and be like wait!!! I have a boo boo! That he’s mentioning it at all shows he doesn’t like it. She’s either just totally careless with him or she enjoys hurting him.

It’s hard to say because of high speed chases, but I feel like when she’s driving, we get lots of shots of Mac sliding around and crashing into things when she takes sharp turns then looking annoyed. I feel like we never had shots like that when Jack was driving. It’s just a little thing that bothers me but it feeds into my impression that she doesn’t care if he gets knocked around.

She also just like. Constantly criticizes, mocks, and berates him. In 4:2 post break up, Mac tries to be professional and she just takes every opportunity to dig at him. I hate that she ADMITS that she lied to him all through their relationship (“when we started dating you said you liked the body spray/I said a lot of things I didn’t mean”). He’ll dig back but he never starts it. She mocks his interests and is super dismissive when he starts geeking out over something.

During missions, she bitches at him to fix all the problems and puts so much pressure on him. Then he does come up with a miraculous solution and she’s so critical of his plan. Then she blames him for the problems caused by his absolute last resort do-it-or-we-die solution. Like wow desi, I’m sorry the sat phone is broken, he used it to make an electromagnetic to disarm a nuclear bomb (I made that up as an example). All the other team members tease Mac, but it feels way different and he looks upset after desi does it.

Also like. When his plan doesn’t make sense to her and she’s stressed, she says “don’t make me punch you, Mac!” that totally sounds like the start of physical abuse. If not a pattern. How often does she say that? Did she threaten to punch him when they were dating whenever he did something she didn’t like?

I haven’t gotten to the Mac’s secret project stuff yet, but I’ve seen enough posts to indicate stalking, emotional manipulation, physical abuse, and a complete lack of trust. That seems to me like a culmination of the behaviour we’ve seen from her since the beginning. It’s fine when she lies to Mac, withholds information to manipulate him, mocks his vulnerability but God Forbid he keep one thing from her or do something that doesn’t make perfect sense to her.

I hate in 5.3 when she is brings up knocking people unconscious, and he looks so devastated when he says “I thought you forgave me” and she assures him that she did. Except when you tell someone you forgive them, you don’t hold it over their heads.

Then during the quarantine episode, she goes “I got your very… VERY long apology for everything.” Like she criticizes him constantly for not apologizing enough then is weird and passive aggressive that he wrote out a thoughtful apology? Especially since she criticized him using Phil collins lyrics to apologize previously. Does she just not want to accept? Strikes me as a power thing to keep him constantly apologizing.

I hate that she bitches about not going on dates, not only rejects his ideas but belittles them all while refusing to suggest any of her own. Sounds like she doesn’t actually want to connect with him, just punish him and make it his fault.

She’s so mean to him ALL THE TIME but seems to constantly be mad about something that he’s supposedly done. I wouldn’t stay dating someone who I was constantly mad at or feeling betrayed by. It seems to me like she gives and withholds affection to keep Mac dependent on her and to punish him for bad behaviour, just like his dad!

She is definitely emotionally abusive and manipulative. I believe she’s physically abusive. We don’t see her hit to really hurt him on screen, but we’ve seen that she can take him in a fight so she could actually physically hurt him if she wanted to. Are all her smacks her reminding him of that?

I would tolerate desi as a character if it wasn’t for her wildly toxic relationship with Mac. It’s nice to see physically capable female characters, angry female characters, poc main characters, characters with tattoos that aren’t considered unprofessional, we love it. Her emotional callousness could be an opportunity for a character growth arc. But I just hate how she treats Mac being played off as sexy banter or romance!

Many years ago...

The banging on the door grew more insistent. Still, she didn't answer.

Blood on her hands, blood on her boots. If Desi had more time, she'd scrub it off the tread to avoid leaving a trail of sticky red prints for them to follow. It didn't matter now. They already caught up to her. There were more in the hall, more on their way, but the blood was from the one who found her first, and now he lay on the floor of this rundown bathroom, bloody-faced and glassy-eyed.

Some time ago, Desi stopped feeling the urge to close the eyes of the men she killed.

"Answer me!" the man behind the locked bathroom door snarled. He was the meanest one.

This was supposed to be a quick mission, one she was only on because the idiot in charge didn't speak Vietnamese. Dalton. When she cleaned up this mess, he'd owe her big time.

She just needed a second to think. To regroup and make a plan.

When gunshots filled the hall right outside the door, Desi wiped her hands on the dead man's shirt and picked up her own weapon. She held it close to her chest, thumb on the safety.

One final shot shattered the lock on the door, and it slowly swung open.

But no one stepped inside.

Desi was about to poke her head out when a familiar voice, in that godforsaken accent of his, drawled, "You know last I checked, hiding in a bathroom wasn't part of Army Ranger protocol."

She holstered her gun, stepping out to see his smug face. "Neither was babysitting an old man." She fought to stifle her grin. He was insufferable, but she was starting to like him. Not that she'd ever admit it.

"Well, sweetheart, someone had to clean up your mess. You owe me." He gestured to the bodies on the floor. Desi stepped over them and followed Dalton down the hall.

"I don't owe you a damn thing, Dalton."

"You say that now, but one day you will."

Cairo Day 2023 Day 7: The Worst Things

February 22, 2019

Mac blinks at the bedside clock, waiting for his sleep-sticky eyes to focus on the numbers. Four twenty-two am. He’d been hoping it was later, even though he knew it wouldn't be.

Sleep has been elusive since Jack left, but for the first few days, he’d managed to fool his brain well enough to get in five or six hours a night, even if he spent the rest of the time tossing and turning.

But ever since he found Desi in his bedroom, even that is gone. Now it’s usually an hour and a half, maybe two, and only after laying awake for at least that long. He’s been laying here since eleven this time, and now he is simultaneously wide awake and half asleep, brain racing and too tired to think properly.

He usually sleeps badly after a tough mission, especially if it drags up memories of the past along with it. The night of the wedding he’d conked out on the bed in Jack’s hotel room, knowing he’d probably wake up at some point seeing Riley’s too-still form laid out on a silver countertop. He’d known that, and he’d known Jack would be there to shake him awake before it got worse, and listen to his middle-of-the-night fears. In the dark, half-asleep, that’s the only time he ever lets himself fall apart like that.

But he wishes he’d said something then to Jack about this Kovac mission. He wished he’d asked Jack to stay. He wishes he’d told Jack how he was afraid he wouldn’t be able to handle doing this job without him, instead of just boxing up his fears and telling himself not to be selfish, telling Jack he’d be okay. He should have asked Jack not to leave, instead.

Because he isn’t sure he’ll be okay.

Two weeks ago if he’d gone two nights like this, he’d have invited himself over to sleep on Jack’s couch. Now he wonders if he’ll ever sleep right again.
