when you realize cas never got a chance to see dean mourn him. to see what his death did to dean. how it broke him completely. SHATTERED. he never saw dean's utter despair. anger. complete hopelessness. he only ever saw dean's joy when he came back. and so cas figured that his death simply didn't affect dean all that much. that dean could be happy with Cas gone. that Dean could go on. Move on. cas never understood that this joy, this hope, this smile on dean's face after he came back was ONLY BECAUSE HE CAME BACK. CAME BACK TO DEAN.
Cas was the REASON.

What do you think Dean is thinking right here after cas says I love you? Because I’ll tell you what I think. He’s just thinking “no” over and over again with different meanings.
Tumblr media
“No no no no (he’s going to die) no no no no no (he’s loved me this whole time) no no no no (don’t make me acknowledge my feelings) no no no no no (It’ll change everything and I’m scared) no no no (I don’t deserve your love)”

I’m not sure if someone else already made a post about this, but I was rewatching Tombstone and something just hit me. Dean wanted to stay alone with Cas a little bit longer in that cowboy hotel room. Sam takes Jack with him and pairs Dean up with Cas, after noticing how happy Dean was to get Cas back (which he even made a comment on earlier in the episode, we love a supportive brother). Dean agrees with this change of plan. Sam and Jack immediately gets up to leave and head for the graveyard. But when Cas is about to get up too and get ready, Dean does this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And this is the same fucking goddamn episode where Dean makes Cas wear a fucking cowboy hat. And then gets offended when Cas didn’t immediately recognize his Tombstone reference. “I made you watch it,” not “we.” The same way “where Dean spread your ashes” is NOT “we.” And Dean has probably already seen ALL of those movies, probably a shit ton of times. He just wanted Cas to see them too. With him. Like a movie date night. And then Cas imitates a phrase from the movie, “I’m your huckleberry.” And then Dean, after averting his eyes and closing them and gulping down, says “Yeah, exactly.” immediately followed by “…it’s good to have you back, Cas.”
AND NOT TO MENTION THE FACT THAT DEAN TOOK A PHOTO OF CAS OFF SCREEN???????? AND THEN PRINTED IT OUT??????????

I cannot be normal about season 6 Dean Winchester fighting so desperately to believe in Castiel that he’s pushing back against Sam and Bobby, the two people he trusts most. Like—that’s HUGE. That Dean, who struggles to trust people, who has been trained not to, clings so tightly to his belief in Cas, and so obviously not only feels betrayed, but hurt when Bobby and Sam are proven right. I cannot be normal about the fact that, after everything that goes down, after Cas has betrayed them and lied to them and led to evil being unleashed on the world, 7.02 Dean pulls his trenchcoat out of the lake and carries it with him as he travels, mourning his lost friend.
Dean, who has been deeply betrayed, who does not trust easily and forgives even less easily, still clings to what he has left of Cas, and still forgives him when he comes back, even before he’s fixed his mistakes.

Okay, yeah, spn writers getting their lines cut because certain parties wanted the subtext more buried. But Ben Edlund also full on telling us SHOW DON'T TELL matters and letting things be self-evident because it's right there so...it's there. He also said he really liked how they just said it outright with the "more profound bond" line.
So it's self-evident show don't tell And it's been said outright And he's for saying it outright
But if something self evident isn't said outright that doesn't mean it's not there and not canon and not text.
Let me repeat myself: If something self evident isn't said outright that doesn't mean it's not there and not canon and not text.

"Dean didn't love Cas," "It was platonic," fuck off, when Cas died, he handled his loss the exact same way John did when he lost Mary. It's not even subtext, it's in the dialogue. Sam points it out, loud and clear. That's literally what the narrative was conveying.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"He's not just grieving about Cas, he lost Mary too." Yeah, but even when he's hellbent on blaming all of their loss on Jack, even he could see that Mary made her choice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But to him, Cas didn't. To Dean, Cas was manipulated—deceived by some idea of "paradise," and it's easier to swallow that than to consider that Cas up and left them to protect Lucifer's child.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And you wanna know the cherry on top of all this??? Castiel's paradise consisted of them, together. Happy. Alive. Together. Castiel may have run away with Kelly to fulfill her wish for Jack, (to let him keep his powers where the Winchesters wanted to turn him human), but he only did so for that promise. In the end, he ran away so he could give them this.

I think that Dean and Cas' story is truly a love story. From beginning to end, we see endless little storylines and director choices and writing choices and actor choices, we see their bond builds and builds and breaks and builds again and they ultimately have some of the most epic quotes spoken to them or by them, their story to it's core is a story about love, and how It can change even the most heartless of beings. It is also a story of so many beautiful mergings, between heaven and earth, angel and human, we see two supposed opposite beings literally fall in love infinite times over while trying to save each other again and again, and in so many ways, not always good ways, but all in good intention.
An angel of the lord saves the righteous man from hell. This is where they start. And then he continues trying to explain to him why he deserves to be saved. Why he will do it time and time again. And so he does.
They go to purgatory together, and the whole time they are there their whole mission is trying to save one another, even if it meant sacrificing oneself, because the other one is too important for them to lose, to imagine a life without, to deprive them of continuing to live like they deserve.
They always tried to keep the other one safe and close, without knowing truly why that is what they wanted.
The angel rebelled for the human. He kept doing everything for him, and the human did everything for the angel, trusted him, made him his family, and taught him what family truly meant.
They were each other soulmates, which was confusing and took some time for the angel to comprehend since he never had a soul to begin with. Maybe the human made him grow a soul, even if only figuratively, but either way, he couldn't deny the truth once it set in; it was the love he had for this human that changed him, changed everything, the entire course of the universe.
So yeah, Castiel, Angel of the Lord, Celestial being of Heaven and the Divine, let his love change him. And he became other things, like Cas and Huggy Bear and Sunshine. He let the heaven in him fall in love with the earth and never came back to the heartless soulless being he once was. He loved now and was in love, and it was so much it was enough to make him happy.
And Dean loved Cas. He loved him a lot. He saw praying as begging but only prayed to Cas. Only begged Cas to see him and understand he needs him, because love is too big a word, or too small, or too hard to let out of his throat. He let himself be hurt by Cas both physically and emotionally because as much as Cas cared for him, there were times he did not know the best ways to show it. He trusted him time and time again and gave him the benefit of the doubt until he couldn't find it in him anymore to hold against his own anger and lost it. Lost his angel to his anger while he froze in place. But he woke up in time, and prayed again to his angel to come to him, to save himself, because he loved him, he loved him so much that he let his anger die and let himself cry for his love. And Cas came to him and heard his prayer, but not the love that was too scared to be set free.
And then it was time. It was time for Cas to save Dean one last time, and the only way he could do that was by confessing his love and being happy and then abruptly being taken away forever. And he shared it all, everything they never talked about so openly before but always fucking felt and knew was there. Because not only he always loved Dean, he always really saw him, saw it all, and knew it all, but understood better than anyone that this Righteous Man did everything for love and out of love. Cas not only fell in love with the earth or with a human but with the most human aspect of this world, which was love. Dean was love incarnate, and Cas was always in Awe of him
So they loved and loved and lost each other, and it hurt like hell to think they would never have their happy ending.
But Dean and Cas had a fan base. A full on Fandom of people who loved them truly and wanted them to have a happy ending. And the writers aren't the only ones who matter in this story. We changed them too.
In my eyes, and I'm sure that in many of yours as well, Dean and Cas are happy and alive. They are together and in love, like they have always wanted to be, like they deserved to be. And it is good, and sweet, and safe, and sound.

dean and cas have abandonment issues but they deal with them in such different ways.
dean is terrified of being unloveable and of people leaving him, so he pushes them away before they can leave. because in his head, everyone leaves in the end, so why bother let them get close? he’ll just end up heartbroken in the end because that’s all he’s know, from his own family, his friends, partners, allies. they either end up dead or gone.
cas, on the other hand, is terrified of being useless because he had been created as a tool, a weapon for others to use, and was treated as one his whole life. every time he thinks he isn’t useful anymore he leaves because why would anyone want a broken tool? people always end up leaving when he doesn’t have power, or they make him leave with little to no explanation.
dean needs someone to stay when he’s pushing them away, to be reassured that even when he is at his worst they still love him and want to be around him.
cas needs someone to tell him to stay when he’s no longer useful. if he is asked to leave he will, because he is never allowed to stay for long and sees so little of himself.

Hold on a second, while we're on the subject of tactical Cas...
We already know he can heal people without actually making skin-on-skin contact, and that he touches Dean just because.
But consider asking Dean to let him take his temperature in 11x10.
Tumblr media
He could identify that the dead guy in My Bloody Valentine had a bladder infection by sniffing him. He diagnosed a hernia in a baby from a distance.
He also just had his hand on Dean's face.
Of course the Doylist perspective is that this is a funny gag, sure. But the Watsonian perspective here is that Cas is a crafty little perv (if you think it's meant as a rectal thermometer), or that he thinks he can make a breakthrough in Dean's walls by getting a finger in his mouth.
The choice of words with "let me" also....I mean great asking for explicit consent, but it also betrays that this is something he specifically wants to do.
Weird timing in context, but evidently Cas won't pass up an opportunity 😂.

Here’s a parallel I noticed that highlights the difference between Cas relationship with Dean and Cas relationship with Sam pretty well. Episodes 10x22 vs 14x15
When MOC Dean is beating up Cas, Cas doesn’t hit back even once. The most he does is try to bear hug him from behind to calm him down. But not a single punch.
When Sam is Justin Smith, Cas says he won’t hurt him, but he actually does pick him up and slam him into the ground. It’s not a big deal, obviously he knows Sam can take it, but it’s something he wouldn’t even do with Dean.
Before the actual fighting, Cas tells dean, “I’m your friend… I’ll be the one that watches you murder the world.” And then when MOC Dean is on top of Cas holding the angel blade to him, Cas holds onto the wrist Dean has on his tie and the only thing he says is, “please”. He doesn’t even try to grab the hand holding the knife. And then Dean stops.
On the other hand, when Sam is on top of Cas trying to stab him, Cas uses an entirely different approach. He’s forcibly holding back Sam’s arm that’s holding the angel blade. He tells him he understands that he wants to be happy, but that if he does this he fails the people they lost. He says “if you do this you fail Jack. Sam, you fail Dean.” And that makes Sam stop.
The difference that’s so stark is that Cas has to appeal to Sam through talking about Dean. But Cas can appeal to Dean through his own relationship to him. He doesn’t need to bring up what it will do to Sam or anyone else, because their own relationship is powerful enough and he knows it.

I’m a firm believer of the idea that the writers had to get Cas and Dean to stay away from each other as much as possible in season 9, especially after everything that happened before, during, and after their time in Purgatory—like Goodbye Stranger, for example—because if they stayed together, destiel would’ve already been canon.
So just imagine if Gadreel wasn’t a dick who was being used to keep them apart, and they let Cas stay inside the bunker. Cas is human, complete with fresh, new, and intensified human desires. Who’s also canonically in love with Dean, by the way. As for Dean, that motherfucker literally almost confessed in season 8. They wrote an entire subplot about Cas being brainwashed with the intention of breaking him out of it by having Dean confess his feelings towards him. By telling him he loves him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Do you fucking see where this is headed towards?? THE natural progression of these events??? That the writers had set up and trapped themselves in?????
Human Cas safely staying in the bunker with Dean would’ve been such a perfect environment for more intimate moments between them. And they couldn’t risk that. Dean having to guide Cas through mundane, day-to-day human things he never had to deal with before literally sounds like the plot of a cheesy romantic series I’ve seen. Which makes me wonder about what the hell took place between the night Dean stayed with and took care of Cas after their fight against Ephraim, and the morning when he drove Cas back to work. That was one of the few moments in that season where they could be alone together. And also something that they chose to skip over.

late seasons watch through has me so deep in ‘when is dean aware of his feelings for Cas and vice versa’ and while I think it’s come to the surface to him a few times before there is no WAY post demon!Dean he isn’t thinking about it!!!! Demon!Dean was a dean that embraced all of his hedonistic instincts without shame, and we /know/ he slept with men, or at least Crowley; so he has to be aware of/attempting to re-bury his lack of heterosexuality; and then post cure we get ‘you look great’ and ‘I’m glad you’re here’ and dean trying to reach out but I think feeling a bit rebuked by ‘there’s a female waiting out in the car’ and then two episodes later a teenage girl says the word destiel to his real actual face and by the end of the episode he tells a little lesbian playing a mini-Cas to put as much sub into that text as possible!!??? like I don’t think Dean does a lot of self reflection but that is not buried deep that is AT THE SURFACE there is a degree to which he has to consider being aware of how very not normal he is about this man
