Growing up with Destiny Child it was Kelly who captivated me, she was what I wanted to be like, Not too over the top or underwhelming but the perfect flavor of sense and sophistication everything I wanted to be. She is those things and more today. That she is still a force when everyone thought Beyoncé was ganna leave everyone in the dust, She made me proud that she made it too. When she did the song with Nelly, it was what really made her stand out to Us. She made us feel like you could be a black girl and be different and it was ok. She helped us say to ourselves that it was ok to be in this skin because at the time I hated being black because I didn’t fit in with the rappers or the other black gloss, we were gothic, eclectic and as we were ostracized for ‘White Washed’ what the kids at schooled mocked us they way my sister and We spoke eloquently so this way of being made us not like them. In this community it seems you can never be black enough because your not blacker then black or walk the right way, talk the right way, or know enough oppressed black pioneers who paved the way for our people… a community, and if I wanted to needed to park my car on my family’s lawn world it be a question. All the stigma we face, we kinda do it to ourselves… I’ve never experienced racism but I know what black on black crime is.
A perspective. KellyRoawland was a mentor and someone who made me feel welcome.
