“The Soul of Outer Space”: Quatre and the question of Newtypes in GW

Newtypes are a concept from the Mobile Suit Gundam series; the term refers to a generation of people who were born during the age of space habitation who have developed certain telepathic, telekinetic, empathic, and even precognitive abilities to widely varying individual degrees. They are considered a new phase of human evolution, better adapted to life in space because of their unique capabilities.

The precise details of what makes a person a Newtype are intentionally left a little mysterious. The most common Newtype characteristic seems to be the ability to sense the “pressure” of other Newtypes, though the exact identity of the other person is typically an unknown factor-- this is evidenced by the fact that whenever someone with Newtype abilities senses another, their first response is usually to try and guess based on vibes who the source of “pressure” might be. People frequently share a similar "feeling" that can be mistaken for someone else, particularly if they have personal traits or life circumstances in common. 

Newtypes can usually detect powerful emotions and subconscious intent from anyone in proximity, regardless if those people are fellow Newtypes or not. Some especially powerful Newtypes develop the dangerous ability to invade or even alter the minds of other people, though this is very rare.

Another common ability of Newtypes is an increased awareness of their environment in all directions. In some cases this is accompanied by minor telekinetic properties that allow them to guide or move objects in their surroundings, though this is usually limited to machines designed specifically to respond to brainwaves. This extrasensory capacity makes Newtypes exceptional pilots, able to feel the movements of their craft as if it were an extension of themselves and easily navigate through space.

However, what is of greatest importance about Newtypes is their ability to immediately understand and empathize with other Newtypes simply by making a mental connection with them. Communicating on a wavelength of pure emotion and thought creates an intimate and deeply personal connection between Newtypes without their needing to speak or even meet one another. 

 Newtypes connect to each other via their emotions, their memories, their minds, their selfhood– things that together one might describe as the soul of a person. When a Newtype dies, they leave behind an impression of this soul that can continue to be accessed by other Newtypes.

…So why the hell does anyone care about their psychic powers? Newtypes can literally transcend death--

--at least in a very animistic sense that assumes all things leave behind an impression. But Newtypes in particular seem to leave behind very distinct presences after they die, which can interact with other Newtypes and retain their individual identities for a long time before returning to the universe, presumably at will. 

The idea of oneness and harmony underlies the concept of Newtypes and their role in the world: they can instinctively understand with each other because they are not different entities in the grand scheme of things; they persist after death because all things persist after death; they can connect seamlessly with their environment because they are not separate from their environment; they can grasp the future because all time exists simultaneously.

 This ties in with the idea of a greater cosmic collectivism, or a pervasive animism in the universe that retrieves and emits the energy of life in perpetuity. It is not a force that is necessarily guided by some greater will, but is simply a natural principle, responsible for guiding people inexorably towards a more harmonious future if they are willing to stay in tune with it– and, being a part of nature, this guidance is lost when nature is not respected. This goes hand in hand with the idea that whenever things have been thrown off balance, because of greed or pollution or strife, humanity will be doomed to suffer. 

It’s a concept that’s found across lots of Japanese media, to say nothing of the religions and philosophies across the world that feature similar concepts. It’s perhaps not the first thing that people think of when they think of the Gundam franchise, but Tomino’s creation wouldn’t be what it is without this incorporation of hope and spirituality at its heart.

This is why Newtypes are lauded as the “next phase” of human evolution– not because they have “superpowers”, but because they have the ability to transcend the human instinct towards violence and competition by virtue of their capacity to understand and empathize instantly with each other. 

Newtypes are adapted to living in the stars, free from the “pull of gravity” which represents the limited and violent instincts of earth-bound mankind; attuned to a greater universal spirit, they are the harbingers of a peaceful utopia for future generations.

–At least, that is the hope for them according to the doctrine of those desiring independence for the emigrants in space.

The tragedy of Newtypes is that they are a generation of young people, uniquely endowed for exploring the potentials of space in total harmony with each other– and they have almost without exception been co-opted by competing military factions eager to exploit their latent talents as superior mobile suit pilots. Their abilities are forced out of them in combat; they are manipulated from infancy, brainwashed and conditioned to be easier to control by their handlers; their brains are studied and crudely adapted to create artificial Newtypes in labs whose sole purpose is to become elite soldiers. Even when they are not being actively abused by a military authority, Newtypes are still most frequently encouraged to use their potential in service of war before any other path they might choose. 

What to do about the generational divide between Newtypes and “Oldtypes” within the bleak reality of a wartorn era where talented young people are forced into military pipelines to die for governments that fear them is a central dilemma of the Universal Century timeline, spanning many series.

…But you don’t have to worry about any of that! Because there are no Newtypes in Gundam Wing. 

Oh sure, there are strangely Force-sensitive people like Quatre! But that boy’s just touched is all. And sure, people sometimes have mysterious premonitions that turn out to be correct even when all evidence points to the contrary, but that’s just a wacky coincidence! Do mobile suits sometimes start moving on their own because they “sensed” the will of their pilots? Don’t be silly– machines just do weird shit sometimes! Don’t worry about it. In this timeline, if you want to see the future and have a mental breakdown because people are feeling too loud, you gotta do it the old fashioned way by plugging into the ZERO system, or trying some of Howard’s special strain.

There are no Newtypes in Gundam Wing– that is to say, there are clearly some gifted individuals who have a set of undefined empathic and psychic abilities, but those people aren’t called “Newtypes”. They’re not called anything, because they’re not a thing, there is no in-universe explanation for them. We know Quatre has “the shine”, but other than him, we have no strong evidence that there is a new breed of space psychics emerging in the Colonies that will lead humanity to the next phase of its evolution (whatever that means).  

EXCEPT: along comes the White Fang, and its self-appointed representative of the Colonies, Milliardo Peacecraft, spouting some extremist fringe theory about how people born in space are inherently superior to people born on Earth because they’ve transcended their inner chimp and are destined to carry on the species when the old breed of earthlings die out. 

…If this sounds like some radical Zeon-pilled podcast nonsense, that’s because it is. There is NO established basis for these claims in AC 195. It is pure manufactured conspiracy theory horseshit. It’s a scare tactic, designed to sound like the deranged manifesto of an absolute maniac who NO ONE agrees with, and NO ONE wants in charge of a planetfucker-class space battleship pointed at earth. And that’s the point.

…But hold on, what IS up with Quatre then? Are there empathic space psychics or not? There’s obviously at least one, but does that mean there are others? 

Maybe. There’s definitely SOMETHING going on that’s making people just a little bit special, a little bit faster and more durable with better reaction times, who are extra in tune with their surroundings, or have a heightened ability to sense the emotional states of other people. It’s not limited to people from space either– Zechs seems to have inherited a suite of enhanced reflexes, and increased physical endurance that allows him to fuck around with G-forces that ought to turn his brain into soup; meanwhile Relena got all of the personal charisma and the ability to sense people’s intentions that her brother lacks. 

But way more significantly, the most perceptive characters seem to have a kind of future compass pulling them in the direction of a particular future that they sense is “correct”. While it’d be tricky to prove that this is distinct from regular old fashioned intuition, what IS certain is that this intuition plays a significant role in the universe of Gundam Wing.

This strong intuitive pull towards connectedness and (just wild beat?) communication does seem to suggest that there could be a distant, animistic cosmic force at play that the more empathically gifted characters can sense to varying degrees, just like there is in the universe of Mobile Suit Gundam.

That would mean Quatre isn’t the only one of… whatever he is, it's MOST of the cast! Again, what exactly constitutes a Newtype is mysterious; it’s more than a set of abilities, it’s the attunement to a collective human spirit and the universe. The Newtype-equivalents in Gundam Wing may be what they are simply because they have an awareness of it. 

So what’s “the soul of outer space” that Quatre talks about? Well, that distant, cosmic force that’s drawing people together and towards greater harmony, I’d say!

And the person who finds themselves acting as an inciting catalyst for a cascade of events drawing everyone forward would be at the center– the heart, one might say– of all those connected destinies converging in space.

…Or maybe that’s just the open puncture wound talking.

Quatre, sweetie, you’ve lost a lot of blood, let’s get you to bed.

Fumetto per adulti imaginé et écrit par Renzo Barbieri avec la collaboration de Tristano Torelli qui narre les aventures de Playcolt alias Alan Velon, 34 ans, un playboy américain milliardaire ayant des intérêts dans un empire d'édition; son apparence et son nom sont basés sur ceux de l'acteur français Alain Delon. Velon est un personnage audacieux et aventureux qui vit la plupart de l'année à Barracuda, son île privée (en forme de requin), et bien qu'il soit lié de manière romantique à la bombe sexuelle Scarlett Lizzy, il continue de flirter avec de belles femmes où qu'il aille. Velon a un puissant sens de la justice et prend souvent son identité secrète: le cynique et impitoyable Playcolt, un vengeur et un héros de la lutte contre le crime qui vient en aide aux faibles et aux opprimés. Les récits basculent allègrement d'un genre à l'autre, criminel, espionnage, mœurs et même SF, fantastique et horreur. En outre, au fil des épisodes, on croisera quelques "jetsetters" des années 70, tels Frank Sinatra et Aristote Onassis. Le contenu ici est assez subtil par rapport à ce qui allait suivre dans les bandes dessinées des années 80.

Em llevo a les 07h30. Encara estic ple. El tajin d'ahir duia carn i ous fregits al damunt. Encara salivo tot i que em sento embafat. L'Abderrahim cuina de meravella. No tinc més son, he dormit molt a gust. Aprofito per respondre els whatsapps de la Sílvia (com t'estimo, batuadell!). Ahir vaig escoltar el seu audio abans de tancar els ulls. Buon giorno. Els italians ja esmorzen. Intercanviem algunes impressions, tots seguim trasbalsats. Obro l'Antologia mentres espero l'esmorzar. 1 - Guillem de Berguedà: Cançoneta leu e plana. No m'interpel*la. Un senyor feudal que ingeniosament se'n fot d'un altre. Em preparo per tornar a sortir, aquest cop amb la gel*laba, rinyonera i càmera. Em proposo no treure el mòbil, recòrrer els camins d'ahir, de memòria. Amplio progressivament l'itinerari. Faig tres fotografies. Busco el Renault 19 que vaig veure ahir quan caminava amb el Lhsn. El vidre posterior estava fet a miques. Vull fotografiar-lo. Sento que simbolicament em parla. Recordo la mort del relat que experimento des del dijous 29 de setmbre. No el trobo. No obstant, al costat del Riad, a la zona de Marrakech que més em bressola, he trobat un altre Renault 19. TANMIRT DIKKAN OUL (From de bottom of my heart, com em recorda l'Abderrahim.) Aziz (un pintor d'Alnif que actualment viu a Barcelona) els hi va regalar els quadres que revestixen el Riad. Hi ha un que m'ha colpit. Abril del 1994, un mes abans del meu naixement. Em plantejo la possibilitat de visitar-lo en tornar a casa. Tajine de verdures i pollastre. Descobreixo el terrat del Riad. Faig una migdiada a la preciosa tenda verda i vermella. M'acabo desvetallant degut a la calor. Desperto a l'Abderrahim. Fem un té amb pastes. El Lhsn apareix sobre les 20h. Comença a parlar amb els italians, han arribat fa una estona. Els italians sopen amb nosaltres. Tenen vint-i-tres anys, ella matemàtica, ell economista. Sopem i el Lhsn em condueix a l'estació d'autobusos. Segons deixa caure, ha tingut un dia molt dur a la feina. Es nota que m'ajuda per compromís. Sento que li agradaria ser a casa seva. Caminem en silenci, sense res a oferir-nos. Em recorda molt a l'Horaci, el pare de la Júlia. Sento que en el fons li ha molestat que jo anés traduint-los quan parlava amb els italians. Un complexe d'inferioritat que s'ha traduit en una oberta indiferència alhora de col*locar-me al bus i acomiadar-se. No el jutjo. El bus surt més de mitja hora tard, fins que no s'omple no surt. Fa una calor insuportable. Que engegui l'aire acondicionat, per favore! Una senyora d'uns seixanta anys, luxosament vestida, em demana d'on sóc. M'explica, en un francès rudimentari, que s'ha construit una casa de quatre pisos. No acabo d'entendre si intenta que em senti a gust o si m'està tirant la canya. Escolto la meva playlist: 27selection. Dues hores de carretera i primera parada. La majoria dels passatgers baixen. Estiren les cames i compren alguna cosa per picar. Jo em quedo. Més de mitja hora, temps per escriure. Finalment arribem a Tinghir a les 07h25. M'estic pixant, molt mal de coll i ben encostipat. Pixo en un forat a terra i omplo la meitat d'una ampolla tallada que s'utilitza com a got. Els gats de Marrakech han deixat pas als gossos de carrer. Tal i com em va explicar el Pablo, sovint van en manada per tenir més possibilitats. Espero mitja hora, a les 08h sortim direcció Alnif. Tinc ganes d'arribar i descansar. Sóc conscient que practicament la totalitat del viatge pertany al dia 3, però em permeto aquesta llicència, com va fer Garcia Madero a Los detectives salvajes. TIFAUIN (Bon dia).

I love your takes on twilight, do you have recommendations for other books?

Sure!

I'll divide this into authors, titles, and playwrights, since there are some authors I blanket recommend, and reading a play is very different from reading a book.

Also, wrote this one on the fly so there are probably many I missed, but now you have recs.

Authors:

Agatha Christie Christie is remembered by most for her ability to create compelling mysteries and zany detectives, but she had many other qualities. Chiefly among them, her ability to create amazing characters. Recommended works: And Then There Were None. Ten seemingly random people are gathered on an island, and start dying one by one. Crooked House. The usual Christie dysfunctional family, one of my favorites. One of Christie's as well. Curtain. Poirot finds the perfect murderer. Ordeal by Innocence. Two years earlier, a murder was committed. The victim's son was convicted of the crime, and hanged in spite of his insistence that he has an alibi, guys!! Totes!! Well, cut to present day, and the alibi hears about this case, realizes "whoopsie doo, that was me, wasn't it. Well I better tell the family they sent their brother to the gallows and the culprit is still alive and most likely one of them. I love doing good deeds like that. :)" The Mirror Crack'd. One of Christie's later novels, this one is among my favorites for its character creation. It has a very good sideplot of old lady detective Miss Marple finally getting the kind of old where she's not just a zany old lady, but old as in can't live alone and people tell her all the things she can't do, and she's furious about it.

Amalie Skram Radical feminist 19th century realist author. Particular titles I recommend include: Forraadt (Autobiographical novel about a young woman completely unprepared for the horrors of marriage. Places a magnifying glass on the hardships upper-class woman had to endure in their marriage) Professor Hieronimus (A woman reluctantly agrees to submit herself to an asylum, as she has been very stressed lately. The psychiatrist proceeds to gaslight her into thinking she's crazy, her husband believes the psychiatrist over her, she realizes she's not getting out anytime soon. Also autobiographical, because Skram's life was terrible.) Hellemyrsfolket (Follows an impoverished family in Bergen. Asks the question of whether poor life choices are the fault of society or the individual. For instance, first novel, the patriarch has stayed sober and hard-working against all odds, he'll keep this family afloat or so help him god. The novel proceeds to break his spirit.) Skram's translated works might be hard to get your hands on because to my knowledge she's not well known outside of Norway.

Philip K. Dick Hard sci-fi author. Insanely talented man, the kind of mind I aspire to have. A Scanner Darkly (an undercover policeman develops a drug problem and an identity crisis) Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (Features the age-old question of where real ends and synthetic begins)

Victor Hugo VERY loquatious. However, he's so charming when he babbles on and on that you kind of just have to love him for it. I can recommend: Quatre-vingt-treize (historical novel, set during the French revolution.) Les misérables (about miserable French people.)

Titles:

Albertine by Christian Krohg This realist novel about a young, honest woman whose downwards spiral leads her to prostitution sparked a debate about the treatment of prostitutes in Norway and led to changed legislation in their favor.

American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis Not for the faint of heart, but if you think you can do it then knock yourself out with this insane book.

Candide by Voltaire A satirical anti-war, anti-everything novel about a very candid man named Candide, who travels the world and finds that it's a ridiculously, over-the-top awful place. He remains optimistic through it all.

Coraline by Neil Gaiman Delightfully eerie story about a girl who discovers a sinister world almost identical to our own.

Dune by Frank Herbert Excellent, and while I haven't seen the Villeneuve film yet every interview I've read has given me the strong suspicion that the spirit of the book was lost on him. Read the book.

Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman Not a perfect novel, but god it's utterly enjoyable. Impossible not to have a good time reading this.

His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman One of the few YA fantasy series I've read that I wholly and unabashedly loved. Inspired by Milton's Paradise Lost, featuring very interesting religious themes.

Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams SO MUCH FUN. No point in summarizing in part because I can't, this is just a fun, fun, quintology in three parts. If you like my sense of humor you'll love Hitch Hiker's Guide. It's a longer read, though.

Jerusalem by Selma Lagerlöf Penned by the first ever woman who won a Nobel prize in literature, this generational novel depicts the inhabitants of a Swedish village who form a Christian cult and decide to emigrate to Jerusalem. Inspired by a real events. Features seriously interesting characters, my favorite being the couple where the wife developed really bad post-parture depression and wound up committing infanticide, then when she gets out of prison the husband is waiting for her. "I still love you, babe. Let's have new kids."

Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov Beautiful prose, excellent use of an unreliable narrator, horrifying story. Strong recommend.

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde Most people have heard of this one already, so I'll just say that it's a deeply funny book. Dorian Gray is awful, just awful, but delightfully so. Shoutout to poor Sybil Vane.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee Told from the point of view of a little girl, her sweet childhood takes a dark turn when a white woman is raped and a black man gets the blame.

Playwrights:

Euripides. He's the mastermind behind Medea and Bacchae, both of which I strongly recommend.

Henrik Ibsen. A master of writing about the ugliness just beneath the surface. Enemy of the People (Spielberg's movie Jaws is loosely based on it!), Vildanden, and Peer Gynt.

Ludvig Holberg. Erasmus Montanus: Rasmus Berg (Berg meaning "Hill" in Norwegian. VERY normal name.) returns from university, and he is Learned™ now so you may now refer to him only as Erasmus Montanus. He proceeds to be too intellectual to function throughout the play.

Shakespeare. Yeah yeah I feel like a tool, but... he's good damnit. Though my recommendation for him would be to watch a filmatization, as the language can be rather dense. In my experience it's better to know what happens in the play from watching it performed first, before you can really get much out of reading it. The Hollow Crown is a good filmatization of his king trilogies, The Merchant of Venice with Jeremy Irons is amazing, and Baz Luhrman's Romeo and Juliet remains the best Romeo and Juliet film I've seen. Also, sidenote - if English isn't your first language, DON'T make the same mistake I did of reading a translation, thinking that'll be easier.

Sophocles. Wrote the Oedipus Rex trilogy.

Other recs that come to mind are the Old Testament (there's nothing so fascinating as reading stories that date back three thousand years that have shaped our history) and The Cheese and the Worms by Carlo Ginzburg (a scholarly work outlining how an Italian miller named Menochhio formed his own cosmology).

Our fandom artifact for episode 04 is a dōjinshi anthology called Phallus Sex Symbol, collecting works by the circle 黄色の畑 Yellow-Farm from 1999 to 2003. Yellow-Farm was made up of writer Minazuki Yuina 水無月ゆいな and artist Takakura Row 高座朗 and was dedicated entirely to making works where Duo tops everyone. Takakura lists some original published works in the back of the anthology, so they seem to have been succeeding in commercial BL manga and art as well. The anthology was published on August 16th, 2003 and republishes short works which were originally “copy zines” with released in limited quantities at dōjinshi events from 1999 to 2003. Dōjinshi is the Japanese word for self-published magazines, now often used to refer to fanzines with fan comics and fanfiction sold at big all-fandom events such as Comic Market and smaller “only” events dedicated to one series, character, or pairing. They are also sold or resold at stores such as Tora no Ana and K Books. “Copy books” or “copy zines” usually refer to short event-limited releases printed on the fly, nowadays often day of the event at the convenience store copy machines on the way or at Tokyo Big Sight.

Phallus Sex Symbol is an all-seme (top) Duo collection. I feel like usually (this is just a personal impression maybe from my biases) fujoshi want their favorite character to be the one who bottoms all the time—maybe it’s just me, but I want to see the boy get wrecked. But there’s another type of fan out there and that’s the one who wants their boy to be the greatest dick in the land, the dick of dicks, and the heroes of Yellow-Farm are those types of fans, dedicated to making sure everyone gets some of that Maxwell D. 

A character relationship chart shows the relationships of the Phallus Sex Symbol universe, as well as “canon” pictures of each character so we know what they looks like transformed into Takakura’s distinct and beautiful style. The biggest transformation is Duo, which is what drew me to this cover in the first place: he’s big, broad, tall, his hair is even longer and more flowing, it’s blonde! He looks like Zechs. A great example of a fan adapting the art style to suit their characterization. The other pilots get minor updates: Wufei gets two cute braided buns, Trowa gets bangs drawn in a way that makes sense, Heero gets the most beautiful eyes and eyelashes and his hair color is darkened, and Quatre… remains a cute blonde.

The main Duo pairings get descriptions so we go into their stories knowing what the deal is:

Wufei’s feelings for Duo: Won’t say it but love (Duo’s back: Hides his feelings but a good guy)

Heero’s feelings for Duo: A tenacious love. “Mine only.” (Duo: Taciturn, unfriendly, rash; Heero and Quatre are mutually locked in a “Keep your hands off my Duo” relationship.)

Hilde —> Duo: LOVE ❤️ (Duo: Living together ❤️ ; the note for Hilde on the side adds that her feelings are one-sided, but Heero still considers her an obstacle.)

Trowa —> Duo: A secret romantic love (Duo: Kind and quiet)

Quatre —> Duo: “My darling.” (Duo: A gentle little rich boy)

Rashid —> Duo: Likes. Paternal love?! (Duo: Relies on him)

That last note is particularly ?! since Rashid, whom you may recall is the manly leader of Maguanacs Corps, the fighters who assist Quatre, gets an amazing comic where Duo fucks his insecurities right out of him. I’m glad to see Rashid getting some love, even if the story is a bit of Rashid feeling bad about being old and ugly and worshipping Duo’s young (white?) cock; at least Duo finds Rashid beautiful. I’m pretty sure Rashid and Duo interact during the arc where Quatre and Duo hide out in that problematically(?)-Middle-Eastern town, so I judge that to be enough interaction for the ALL-SEME DUO AGENDA to do their business. 

Heero and Quatre’s rivalry comes up in a short comic where Wizard Quatre steals Duo’s penis while Heero is using it (discussed on the pod.) 

Another short comic plays off the story of the King with Donkey Ears: Duo is a king with donkey ears and his lovers (guard Heero, hairdresser Trowa, cook Wufei, and a neighboring country’s prince Quatre) are sworn to secrecy. But Lover D, Quatre, can’t stand it anymore and he digs a hole in the ground. Into it, he shouts: “THE KING IS HUNG LIKE A DONKEY.” And so the secret gets out. Yes, this is a joke about Duo’s giant donkey dick. I love it and respect it.

In between the comics, the anthology includes four fanfiction stories by Minazuki: Advent: Risc Factor, Marvelous: Duo Maxwell Rape Story, Milky Shot: Ghost Love Story, and Criminal (罪人). These are various pairings but Duo/Trowa is prominent! Who knew! They’re all non-canon but the degree of AU-ness varies. The first one is the most interesting: it’s a modern AU where Duo is a college student and private detective. I didn’t delve very deeply into the others, but it’s fun to see how fanfiction tropes are universal. 

After reading all this: I think I’m default a bottom-Duo fan but this has made me see the light of top Duo.
