Oh I fricking love Deutabella! And you're right, never thought about that.

I just love their story, thinking about how they first met with Deut being this cat with 99 wives and all (giving tugger vibes ngl) and then Grizabella shows up. The Glamour cat, of course Deut falls head over heals for her just like everyone else. They fall in love and everything is great. Then for whatever reason (aka whatever headcanon works for you) she leaves and Deut is heartbroken. And when she finally comes back during the show you can literally see how much he still loves her but he can't be the one to bring her back to the tribe.

But then she's accepted back and all is well... Exept she's the Jellicle choice. So Deut cherishes every second of what he has left with her and then she's gone...

What are your CATS headcanons for Rum Tum Tugger? Family, Personality, Ships? All of it pls?

These are just my silly hcs, interpretations, and ships so plz no discourse about them:) Big post below

Family:

He's the only kit from Olivia's litter, she wanted nothing to do with the father however she passed some short time after Tugger was born. • she knew she wasn’t going to make it before hand and so she asked her dearest and closest friend Grizzabella to raise him as her own if she’d be willing too which Grizz accepted.

So tugger is the youngest Deuteronomy son his elder brothers are Munkustrap and Macavity. Though Macavity never liked tugger that much since he wasn’t “his real brother”

• grizzy girl stills ends up leaving though leaving the responsibility of watching a still very young Tugger in the hands of old D who being the Jellicle leader and now solo parent was very stressful.

• So munkustrap sort of taken up the responsibility of watching and taking care of Tugger.

Personality:

I really struggled with how to pinpoint what I think tuggers personality could go based on the wiki where he's said to be "Vain, perverse and inconsequent" but I wanted to add a lil more

While Tugger can be immature at times especially when he's messing with the older cats like Jenny and Jelly he means well, He's artful and knowing after all so he knows when it's time to joke around with the kittens and adults or when it's time to get serious.

He loves any and all attention he can get which is when he plays up to his "tugger antics". tugger's very charismatic and bold especially when he knows what he wants.

He's very caring with those he's closest with and he basically has a big soft spot for all the kittens.

This is completely headcanon based and I have no evidence to support this but he does have some fear or small anxiety that he's only tolerated for his looks which is why he's very particular about his grooming and appearance.

Ships: (omg screams in multi shipper) and bonus hcs for ships

I expected I'd have a lot more ships for Tugger but I don't? huh anyways

Tuggoffelees: I mean come on how can I not? They're adorable in that video of Tugger kissing misto after the "Terrible bore" line and the Tugger wants what he can't have thing sold me. So they're often my main Tugger ship.

I loved it even more when I came up with the headcanon of Misto being Tuggers secret admirer before they get together, since Misto is a good listener he'd make things he found or conjured appear in Tuggers den that he heard tugger talk about as his way of showing gratitude.

Tugger was curious about a cork? and one sits right outside his den before noon

Tugger only found out it was Mistoffelees after he had just entered his den and a perfectly new yarn ball appeared out of thin air.

Tuggerina: Bisexuals in love are the moment the everything, I don't know why I ship this I just think they're a great power couple and their dynamic is cute.

They play flirt with eachother so often that everyone just assumed they were mates before they got together. While Tugger isn't as into PDA as Bomba keeping it more subtle with an arm over Bomba's shoulder or waist. However when they're alone togethere Tugger is practically putty in her hands.

he does in fact care for a cuddle though he'll never admit it to anyone else. when they've been mates for a while tugger plays way more up to the PDA.

Rarepairs:

-Bombatuggoffelees: everything I love wrapped in a neat little bow. (I also love Bombatuggoffelees when Demeter is another one of Bomba's partners)

-Tuggerjerrie: they they they they they are silly, I just like the potential dynamic between the two and Jerrie being a simp for Tugger. They can both get into some trouble together though I think Tugger would be slightly more responsible about it.

-Platonic! Demtugger is something I'm a big softy for too

Deutabella?

Midnight blue and copper color scheme. They already have their three sons when they get married so the boys are all involved in the ceremony (which varying degrees of enthusiasm). Tugger runs ring security lile he's directing a heist. Everyone they know in attendance. Grizabella's wearing a big ballgown and feels beautiful. Friends and family toast the happy couple on their long overdue nuptials. Party til 3 in the morning. Everyone has a grand time.

What was it like for Munkustrap when he realized just how awful Macavity is? As kittens/young adults, did anyone suspect Macavity would turn against them or was it a shock even to Munku?

Macavity was somewhat troubled from the start, but a good kid, but attention was spread pretty thin because of the situation with Grizabella and Deut, so he didn't get the attention he needed and the gentle hand to curb his bad impulses. It was easier for the adults to deal with Munk and Tugger, two more even-tempered kittens, and Mac was older than them, so he unintentionally fell through the cracks a bit when it came to emotional needs. He was also bad at articulating his emotional needs, was very reclusive in that aspect from the start.

So he was not neglected, but not given the attention he really needed in a formative time wrought with tension and a feeling of abandonment as Griz left. So he just kept getting worse, feeding into the negative thoughts and emotions he was experiencing, and it manifested as jealousy and cruelty, among other things. Because he really didn't mind being a big brother at first, but when he kept getting written off and feeling more and more isolated and lonely, he started resenting Munk and Tugger.

Munkustrap was too young to realize the strain on Mac, and really thought the world of his older brother at first. When Mac's sarcastic attitude started turning more venomous and his smiles disappeared however, it really stung, and he couldn't understand what had shifted between them. He tried to get closer to Mac, and Mac just pushed him away, and eventually Mac lashed out at him and left a scar on Munk's shoulder.

That was kind of the turning point where Munk really began to grieve his brother while he was still there, and to fear him. It was always tense when Mac was around, because he just kept sinking deeper into this chaotic hatred, and Munk didn't know how to bring him out of it, and the adults never quite heard him when he did try to explain himself. It was just a really stressful and scary time. Munk made sure Tugger kept his distance from Mac too, didn't want Tugger getting hurt.

So by the time Mac had an explosive outburst a while later and left the tribe, Munk wasn't exactly surprised, but it made him sad all the same. The others could sense a breaking point arriving soon, so it wasn't really a shock for them either. Initially the adults felt a kind of relief when Mac left, because they didn't know what to do or how to move forward handling the situation, but very quickly the guilt sunk in. A few of them went looking for him, but he clearly didn't want to be found at first, so it was a lost cause. The guilt eventually turned into a kind of resentment too, like for Grizabella, and blame was pushed around and ultimately put back on Mac himself for 'giving up on the tribe' and 'abandoning his family.' This blame was 'justified' when tales of Mac's exploits started spreading and he grew in infamy.

So while the Jellicles are very loving overall, there have definitely been mistakes made here and there, and pride is definitely a vice a lot of the cats deal with. Their judgment can get clouded, and both Griz and Mac are two situations in which there was a lot of cloud cover. They've learned better since, so hopefully similar situations won't happen again.

Mates

Part 6! Can’t believe I’ve gotten so far into this precanonheadcanon series (masterpost here)! I’m planning a masterpost for ease of navigation that will be going up as my pinned post soon(ish). But for now, something a little different. In my previous posts I’ve been focussing on character backgrounds, but this one is more sort of, Cats universe lore? It’s about an aspect of Junkyard society (which is honestly a hilarious phrase to type) - the mating bond: what it means and how important it is. I also included some thoughts on the pas-de-deux - it was great fun picking the different dances for the different couples, it’s awesome that Cats incorporates so many different styles of music (I’m not just obsessed with Strictly Come Dancing what are you talking about). Enjoy!

Becoming mates is a bit like human marriage, but like, more. A mating bond is a very serious thing, it can’t be broken and not just any two cats can become mates. You have to present yourself to the Jellicle leader and receive their blessing, and then present yourself to the Everlasting Cat at the Jellicle Ball via the pas-de-deux and gain their blessing too. If the EC accepts the couple then everyone just kinda knows in their souls - you can feel it, the EC’s blessing and joy spreading through you like a warm sparkly wave of emotion and love and happiness which is almost overwhelming, and generally leads to the “cuddle pile”. 

Those two Cats are then bound for life (perhaps even all their lives) as mates. They’re kind of like, sharing a soul? So being together makes them both stronger, but being separated for too long causes them to become withdrawn and weak - this is why Grizabella is a ragged wreck when she eventually returns. Also as a result of the soul-sharing, a mated pair can be chosen as the Jellicle choice. Normally that’s a single-cat deal, this is the only case in which an exception to that rule can be made. It’s not a rule that they always have to be chosen together (see Old D and Griz), but in general, separating the pair would be seen as a terrible cruelty, even in the case of it being the Jellicle choice, which is generally seen as an honour/a positive thing. Mates aren’t all that common though, so it doesn’t come up very often.

Due to how serious a thing a mating bond is, not many couples go for it - there’s no stigma in not attempting it. Even if a couple does try, it’s no guarantee that they’ll be accepted, and if they aren’t… well then that’s just really awkward for everyone involved. This doesn’t happen often though (it’s not unheard of, but the Jellicle leader will generally not give their blessing unless they’re confident the pair will be accepted by the EC). Most Cats (such as Jennyanydots and Jellylorum) are perfectly happy just living together as partners. You can kind of tell though, when a pair is likely to become mates. They’ll have a connection, and not even always right away -  things can change over time to create a vibe that’s just right and you just know. For example, Munkustrap and Demeter became mates after only two months of dating; they grew up together, but the connection didn’t form until later on. And Tugger and Mistoffelees were unquestionably destined from the moment they met to be the youngest pair (21 and 19 in the equivalent human years I guess) ever to be accepted. 

Current mated pairs (in the pre-canon):

*You can’t break a mating bond, but you can strain it to within an inch of its life; since Griz was the one who left she bears most of the brunt of the effects, but Old D feels them too, mostly mentally and emotionally but also physically (“my legs may be tottery, I must go slow” - he’s not just old my guys). It affects each cat differently, although it’s hard to know since basically no one ever does this. When Grizabella left it spooked the hell out of everyone, they didn’t know that it was even possible to walk away from a mate. Old D hides the pain incredibly well for the sake of his children; he gets really emotional when not just one, but both of his sons are accepted (but let's be real, moreso Tugger because he was the wild child [and more like Deut himself when he was younger]).

Not every Ball has a pas-de-deux, that’s reserved for when two Cats wish to become mates. Two in a row (Demestrap then Tuggoffelees the next time) was absolutely wild for the Jellicles honestly, considering the last time was Deutabella like, 30 odd years ago. Also, the type of pas-de-deux changes depending on the couple. Demeter and Munkustrap had a lovely Waltz (like this). It’s slow and romantic and beautiful and they can’t take their eyes off each other and everyone ugly cries. Old Deuteronomy and Grizabella danced a glamorous American Smooth (like this), it was flashy and captivating - an epitome of their younger years. Tugger and Misto performed a smooth foxtrot (I genuinely can’t decide between this and this). This surprised many of the other Cats - for most of them it was their first time ever seeing Tugger’s soft romantic side, and Misto’s confident performer side. (Tugger loves lifting Misto, this cannot be overstated, but he’s only ever allowed to when they’re dancing, and Misto flat out vetoed it for their mating pas-de-deux [Misto dislikes being lifted - it makes him feel like “some sort of human child”], so Tugger compromised for a dramatic dip and spin.)

Only officially mated pairs use the term “mates”, other couples use words like “partners” or “boy/girlfriend”.

I’m not sure if you have ever said anything about this before but I’ve been thinking about it all day, do you have any headcannons for grizabella?

(I completely support your post about the shipping and bi erasure, I’m also going to continue working on drawing cat form Victoria)

I've talked about her a long, long time ago. In my canon Griz is Mac, Munk and Tugger's mother. She and Old Deut were together when they were young, before he became the tribe leader. Old Deut used to be a lot like Tugger is now, flashy and fun loving and a heartthrob. He and Griz thrived on attention and enjoyed carefree lives. But when Deut became the tribe leader his attention shifted to account for his responsibilities, and he couldn't be the same tom anymore, and indeed their relationship and lives in general changed. A lot of the things Griz enjoyed, she couldn't anymore, and things didn't feel the same either, especially when they had Mac, who was a surprise.

Their relationship became strained on both sides which made them make several mistakes as young parents(which Mac would later use to justify his rejection of his family and his budding dark ways) and they tried to be better when Munk and Tugger came along, but it wasn't much use. Grizabella was unhappy and overwhelmed in her new role, and Old Deut was struggling to settle into his and couldn't give her support as much as he wanted, and she needed to leave, to pursue her dreams and to find happiness again since she couldn't find it at home anymore.

A lot of people are quick to call her a bad mother and a horrible person with this headcanon, but I don't agree with that. It's more of a story of a woman having to choose between fulfilling expectations and making others happy, or making herself happy and doing what she loves. She's always been a restless one, and an adventure and attention seeker(not meant in a bad way) and being cooped up and kitten rearing and being expected to adhere to unwritten ways of conducting herself as the tribe leader's mate was too much pressure. So she ran away. Deut took it easier than most of the tribe, though it still pained him. At the end of the day he understood and accepted her choice. Their boys on the other hand struggled with it for years, not being able to comprehend it, but the other queens in the tribe made sure they felt loved.

I think Griz meant to go back within a matter of years, even before her luck started to run out and bad things happened to her. But she felt ashamed of what she'd done, and at the same time reminded herself that she did it for herself, and that kept her away. Fear kept her away too as she got older. She was certain she would be unwelcomed, that no one could forgive her. But when her time was running out, and she knew and accepted it, she had to at least try to beg for forgiveness, to find closure. And luckily she did. ♡

Awe thanks! I have quite a few. I’ll try to categorize them for you. -The Jellicle Circus was at one time a human circus, but it burned down. Old Deuteronomy was a circus cat who ended up being left behind and he decided to stay and create his own circus of only cats. -Grizabella came to the circus after getting lost by her rich owners. She stayed with them for quite a while, her and Deuteronomy fell in love and had their three kittens. But then Griz’s owners found her and she chose to go home with them. Unfortunately for her, they fell on hard times and had to get rid of her again. But when she wanted to return to the Jellciles, they rejected her since she left her kittens. -Macavity lit a fire at the beginning of the show because Munkustrap is specifically terrified of fire. -Old Deut’s staff represents leadership. Macavity stole it and thus declared himself leader. This was enough to help Munkustrap get over his fear and fight Macavity for the circus. -Skimbleshanks met Old Deuteronomy at a train station. The two became good friends and Skimble joined the circus. It took a long time, but he eventually got the circus’ old kiddy train up and running and earned his name as ‘The cat of the railway train’ -Jennyanydots is often mistaken for a tom cat. She’s very well known as the bearded queen but that doesn’t make her embrace her womanhood any less. Her tiny husband will murder anyone who makes fun of her. -The staff Munkustrap uses during Pekes and Pollicles is his training staff that he’s had since he was very little that he used to mimic Old Deut. -Coricopat and Tantomile and Jennyanydot’s adopted babies. -Pouncival found his red hat when he was little and has never stopped wearing it. Gus cheerfully makes a lot of remarks about how the color red reminds him of communism. -Most of the swing cats were abandoned kitties who were taken in and given a home. -Skimbleshanks hates Bustopher Jones in this version. (Idk why he just seems put out with him all the time during that number) -Rum Tum Tugger looks a lot like his mother, and thus Old Deut tended to spoil him. But he makes sure that Tugger at least semi-respects Munkustrap. -The whole circus is magic in its own way.

Decided to fill out the shipchart @skimblyshanks made! My feelings change a lot, lol, but as of right now I'm mostly happy with this.

I defined meh as "I can absolutely see it, but it doesn't hook me", and platonically as either a QPR or other platonic partnership, or a near familial friendship. (You can usually assume that any ships with Cettie aren't romantic, I see her as aro most of the time, so it's either sexual and platonic or just platonic.)

I don't like Mungoteazer not cuz i see them as siblings, they're just friends/platonic partners, but for self ship reasons. Like other Teazer ships I'm very down with but Mungojerrie is too much like me and that makes him a Threat to my relationship with Teazer ajdkgadkjh idk jealousy is weird. Also i don't ship Deut with anyone cuz he's like hundreds of years older than every other cat and I just can't see it lol. (Deutabella is whatever, but only in the past and for narrative reasons)
