Frigid No More (Kaz Brekker)
Word Count: 1.5k
Summary: Kaz realizes his true feelings for the reader after a talk with Inej and Jesper
A/N: this is for @pregnant-piggy 2k writing challenge! Prompt is in bold. No warnings, just fluff! Gender neutral reader pronouns. Open ending, let me know if you want a second part!! My requests are open!!
Being a member of the Crows meant working hard and being good at your job. Everyone had a specialty, and every heist relied on the team’s ability to work together.
If you asked Jesper, he would say that your special skill was bothering Kaz. The reserved man was often left unamused at your boisterous and outgoing personality, and you played oblivious to his exasperation.
Your friendship with Kaz was unconventional, but that didn’t mean there was an absence of love between the two of you. Kaz trusted you more than anyone else he knew – more than Inej and Jesper, who had proved their capabilities time and time again. He looked to you in times of need, knowing that your altruism was something truly extraordinary, and that few were as thoughtful as you.
In the silence of an empty room, you would tidy up after a meeting with the Crows. You would buy bouquets for Inej and Nina for no other reason than to see them smile. You kept track of Kaz’s cane and gloves when he discarded them after a long day, returning them to his office where he could be found working through the night.
Your benevolence was often hidden behind playful antics, however. The cat-and-dog relationship between yourself and Kaz had formed early on, and you knew that everyone enjoyed your clashing personalities – Kaz included. The short bouts of bickering between the two of you acted as entertainment for the other crows; they were aware of your feelings for each other well before the two of you were.
It wasn’t unusual for you to gravitate towards the cunning man. You seemed to seek him out, if only to bask in his presence. He noticed your constant companionship and seemed to anticipate it when you weren’t near. He insisted that the seat next to his was left empty if you were away, expecting you to arrive at any moment; if your shadow didn’t stride next to his, none did.
If you asked Inej what your specialty was, she would say that it was having a sixth sense for knowing when Kaz was busy. That was how you had found him this morning. Kaz was sitting across a small wooden table from Inej and Jesper, a slew of maps and floor plans spread across the dark tabletop. You found your place in the empty chair next to Kaz, his words continuing without pause as you stole the paper that he held in his gloved hands.
“What are we after this time?” your voice clashed with Kaz’s, interrupting his speech as Jesper tittered across from you.
Kaz plucked the paper back, seemingly vexed at your disturbance. “We are not going anywhere. I’m taking Jesper and Inej on a small heist while the rest of you stay here. There’s too many of us to go together, it would only draw unnecessary attention.”
You nodded in thought, eyes scanning the table for a hint of their plan. You grumbled under your breath about never being picked for the fun heists before Kaz spoke again.
“Now, we have work to do. You can only stay if you can be quiet.”
You dramatically pressed your lips into a thin line and dropped your hands into your lap, offering a silent surrender. Kaz glanced wearily at you before continuing to explain his plan to the other crows. An occasional interjection was thrown out as the three worked out the kinks in their plan, Kaz scribbling each feasible idea onto the corner of a page.
The hours ticked by slowly, your attentiveness dwindling with the passing time. Maybe it would’ve been better to abandon your endeavors, but you couldn’t bring yourself to leave your current company.
You enjoyed being near Kaz, opting to spend every free moment occupied with him. He did the same, really. Even if he didn’t show it outwardly, Kaz wanted nothing more than to be near you – to hear your laugh, to shake his head at your escapades, a smile threatening to peak out behind his show of irritation.
“I had a reason to come looking for you earlier, you know.”
Kaz turned his attention to you for only a moment before his eyes returned to the freehand map that Jesper was scrawling on an empty page. “What was it that you needed, y/n?”
You rolled your eyes at his lack of attentiveness. “Oh, nothing important. Just your attention and your company.”
“Well, it looks like you’ll have to find someone else to amuse you right now.”
After another moment of listening to Kaz’s stern voice, you fell back into your state of restlessness. Fidgeting in your seat, you racked your brain for a way to quickly get Kaz’s attention, if only for a moment before he returned to his work. An idea popped into your head, and you moved into action, your lips pulled into a mischievous grin.
Your fingers twisted around the sleek, black hardwood of Kaz’s cane, effectively pulling the item from its place beside his chair. He turned to look at you, his brow arched in question as you laid the cane against your legs, the metal crow glimmering as you turned it in your hands.
“And what, exactly, do you think you’re doing?”
You caught a hint of humor in his voice as he tried to maintain his steadfast demeanor. “Well, it seems as if this is the only crow I’ll get any attention from today,” you quipped, twisting the cane and pointing the top in his direction.
He scoffed, ignoring your statement and returning his attention to his colleagues with a small shake of his head. You sighed and slumped back into your chair, annoyed with Kaz’s lack of a response. Your focus quickly shifted onto Nina who had entered the room just as Kaz had resumed his monologue of his detailed plan with the other crows at the table.
You silently slipped out of your seat, abandoning Kaz’s cane again the leg of your chair in hopes of spending some time with the grisha. Sensing your movement, Kaz flicked his attention towards your retreating figure. He watched as you beamed at the brunette, speaking animatedly with her. Your chatter eventually faded as you led Nina out of the Crow Club and into the street outside.
Kaz’s gaze lingered on the doorway for a moment after you had left, a foreign pang of longing building in his gut. He could still hear your laughter as if your warmth had never left his side. As if it was second nature, Kaz seemed to feel the sudden emptiness in the room, the void that you had created with your swift departure.
Jesper had known Kaz long enough to read his subtle expressions. The two second stare at the door was more thought than he gave to most, and the flash of perplexity across his features was a sure sign that Kaz was not being honest with himself about his opinion of you.
“You alright there, Kaz?” Jesper’s voice brought Kaz back to his surroundings.
He stared at the two across from him as they sported matching cryptic looks.
“Of course, I’m alright. Why wouldn’t I be?”
Jesper shrugged animatedly, a small grin etched into his features. “You just seemed distracted for a moment, that’s all.”
“I was only making sure that y/n was leaving. Maybe now we can get some work done.”
Inej shook her head, “I don’t think that’s why you were watching y/n. I think that you were waiting for them to join us again.”
Kaz jutted his chin out, pondering her words as if in a quandary. “Maybe I was waiting for them to join us again, but only because I can’t remember the last time that they weren’t around.”
“And you’re sure it has nothing to do with the fact that you’re in love with them?”
Kaz’s eyed widened, his fingers smoothing unconsciously over the paper in front of him. He stumbled over his words in an attempt to answer Inej with any amount of surety in his voice. “Are you serious? You know how I feel about y/n.”
Jesper answered in Inej’s place, “we know how you feel about y/n. But do you?”
Kaz opened his mouth in response, but Jesper continued. “Just listen for a moment, will you? You miss them when they’re away, you talk about them constantly, and you refuse to let anybody take their place beside you. What does that sound like?”
Kaz’s brows crinkled in thought. The facts all pointed to the truth that Kaz had known deep down. There was nothing that he wouldn’t do for you, nothing that he wouldn’t sacrifice to see you happy. There was a thin line between love and hate, and Kaz knew that he had dove over the edge a long time ago.
The pieces of the puzzle fit together too well to be wrong. You were good for each other, and Kaz knew it; you pulled him into the unknown – the pleasant, sublime, wonderful secrets in life – while he kept you grounded and secure.
Kaz glanced at the door again before turning his focus onto your empty chair, almost as if in silent argument with himself. Finally, he grabbed his cane from its place against your chair, pulling it towards himself and running his fingers over the metal crow as you had done moments ago.
“It sounds like I should go find y/n.”

The ceiling had several rogue spots scattered on it. A black dent in the corner, a grey trail of who knew what and circular dark blotches. You had been staring at it for hours now. Coldness of the floor seeped in through your back but it felt welcome. Anything that could distract you from the ache in your chest felt like a relief. Placing your hands on your stomach, you took in a few shaky breaths, your brain reminding you of Regulus again.
It had been stupid, the fight. Both of you were angry at the other for weeks, it had to burst— you only regretted the way it did. You said some despicable things and so did he. Some things can never be forgiven. Your eyes stinged with tears again, you could hardly breathe through the stuffed nose. A small part of you had always believed Regulus was it. The one. After years of being with wrong people, he took over your heart by storm. Being with anyone had never been so easy, Regulus had a cutting wit and a rare charm which made you open up yet kept you on your toes.
You didn’t know whether you would ever get the strength to date again, the thought of being with another person felt wrong and the thought of Regulus being with someone else made your stomach churn. All those days you spent together; the nights he held you impossibly close drawing lazy circles on your waist… The way his eyes twinkled with mischief, the curve of his lips when he laughed seemed to etch in on your brain like a reel. A reel through the mind of a high person. Blurred around the edges, moving too fast— the feeling of the moment the only focus.
Regulus had dropped by the day before, you didn’t see him; your friend being the one who opened the door. They told you he left a box of your belongings, you didn’t have the courage to open it, you knew you would break apart if you did just that. But all logic seemed to have evaporated now, you guessed it was the numbness.
Getting up with shaky legs, you furiously wiped your face. The brown box sat beside your couch, you walked over to it turning on the light. Running a hand along the tape, you took in a deep breath before tearing it open. A red shirt, along with other clothes were folded neatly and you kept them aside, divulging further. Your favourite mug was next; you remembered Regulus teasing you about the painted teddy but you couldn’t dwell on it. A small rectangular book at the bottom caught your eye.
Never having seen it before, you furrowed your eyebrows— fingers curling the edges as you pulled it out. Opening the leather bound diary, your eyes focussed on the two words on the first page. Mon fangs. They were written in a cursive handwriting that was distinctively Regulus’. He always called you fangs, or at times which made your heart swell, mon fangs. My fangs. Biting your lip, your thumb hovered over the corner of the page. Were you supposed to… Regulus never did anything without meaning them, he wanted you to see it. Steeling yourself, you turned it and your eyes landed on an old photograph. Taken precisely two years ago. On your first date.
Regulus had an arm around your shoulder, you could remember just how light his touch was that day. One of your friends had set you up with him— you had no idea what to expect; you were fully prepared for disappointment which would leave you more sour than you already were. It was a welcome surprise when you saw Regulus’ eyes lift up and land on you with an easy smile on his face. He shook your hand, before pulling out a seat for you to sit, ever the gentleman. Conversation had flowed smoothly, you remembered laughing most of the time. You warmed up to him well, you were guarded, yes, and he was too. Overall, the date was better than ‘good’ and that was all you needed to know to decide whether you would go out with him again. The boy had told you with a grin as the two of you walked out of the restaurant, that he had more or less assumed the date to end up in a disaster making your lips upturn in amusement.
A photographer had stopped you two, imploring to take a picture— while you shook your head, Regulus shrugged and gave in. And so you stood there awkwardly, unsure how to pose. The photographer had swayed his head, telling you two to come closer. Regulus had asked for your consent silently and when he got it, he pulled you near him wrapping his arm around you as the two of you leaned in together and smiled for the camera. Click. Once the man was paid, he turned to you, offering the photograph. You insisted he kept it, having paid for it after all.
You pressed your fingers over the words written below the picture; coming back to reality. Never did I think my brother’s friend would lead me to meet someone so special. Tears flowed down your cheeks, you knew then, the book would shed the remaining few pieces of your heart. Yet you dared to turn to the next page. A polaroid of him and you at a carnival holding bright pink cotton candy, grinning up at you. Oh how vividly your brain reminded you of that evening.
Turning pages of the album, you paused a little at every picture reminiscing the time you had spent with him. He had doodled at several places, making each page look even more beautiful. An inscription was present at the bottom of every image, your heart ached as you read them all. Regulus wasn’t the one who talked a lot or confessed his feelings. But the moments he did, they were ones you drilled into your memory. Reading what he wrote felt like one of those moments. It was almost as if he was near you, not quite meeting your eye as he whispered to you how much you meant.
Your face itched with the salty tears, you had never felt so overwhelmed. Two years was a long time to spent together and throwing it away over a stupid fight… You felt something drop in you when you turned another page. Blank. Not knowing what to do, you closed the book rather sharply and placed it on the pile in front of you. A page dropped out and you picked it up slowly. It was a letter.
Fangs,
I don’t know whether you’ll even go through this book, you seem to hate our time together. I know I’ve said some very vile things I didn’t mean. Maybe what people say is true, words said in anger cannot be undone. But I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I didn’t apologise. I’m sorry, for all the things I said and the ones I did not say.
For not taking a moment to breathe and to listen to your side of the story. For being far too furious to sit still and for leaving without saying goodbye. If I could relive the moment I would change everything in a heartbeat. Because if anything, going through this made me realise just how much I love you, that I cannot ever live without you. Not when I’ve known what it is like to call you mine.
Maybe you threw away this book when you saw it, or never even opened it. But if you didn’t and you are reading this— I would like nothing more than to have you back. You make me happy and if you allow me, I would gladly spend my life trying to keep the smile on your face alive too.
Just give me one more chance, I promise I won’t mess this up.
Hopefully yours,
RAB
Your vision felt blurry but you could only think about what you just read. He wants you back. Regulus wants you back. Rushing towards the bathroom, you washed your face rapidly, you felt your heart thundering against your chest. If only you opened the box before… Drying your face, you put on some decent clothes taking one last look in the mirror. It’ll have to do, you told yourself before apparating to Regulus’s house. You didn’t understand the sense of urgency which came over you— all your brain told you was that you couldn’t spend another moment away from him over something so trifle.
Knocking on the door, you fidgeted until a familiar face came into view. His eyes and nose were red and he looked paler than usual. Your breath caught in your throat as you moved towards him.
“Fangs,” he started but you cradled his face, pulling him close, pressing your lips against his in answer. His hands snaked around your waist soon, jerking you close, mouth hot against yours. “I’m sorry,” he whispered breathlessly, pulling back and you could hardly say, “I’m sorry too.” before he put his lips against yours again, rougher this time. You tugged his hair, nails scraping against the scalp, releasing a grasp. The closeness seemed to say more than words ever could, it was hard to breathe but you couldn’t stop as if you would lose him the minute you did.
When you finally drew back, breathing deeply, Regulus held your cheeks pressing kisses all over your face. It was hard not to crack a smile.
“I’ve missed you,” you said, tearing up a little again. “I’m sorry.”
And just like that, it felt a weight lifted off of you. There was much to be said and done but you believed everything would fall into place.

It was heartbreaking, painful but you knew you had to do it. It had been a rough couple of months but you’d be lying to yourself if you said it started a few months ago when you knew it was almost a year ago.
Sirius should have been home 3 hours earlier. You heard a faint knock at the door, taking your wand in your hand you opened the door to a heavily injured Sirius. He was bleeding profusely, his clothes were torn and you could see his torso smeared with blood. Sirius immediately told the password and being a healer by profession it was a tad bit easy for you to analyze and treat his pain and bruising but being his girlfriend and doing this took a toll on you. Mainly because this is not the first time he came looking like this and the fact that you knew it won’t be the last. You gave him a strong sedative and could see he was sleeping peacefully. You stayed awake the entire night to make sure he didn't feel any discomfort, pain or nightmares which were very common after a mission.
You were looking at the photo beside your shared bed. It was a photo of you and Sirius which was taken by a muggle camera. It was your graduation that day and after all the festivities at the castle was over both of you were sitting by the Black lake and discussing your future. It wasn’t anything big, you decided you’ll be living in muggle London with the rest of the marauders considering the fact that it was close St. Mungo’s Hospital where you’ll be joining as a first year resident. You were smiling, reminiscing those memories.
You knew a war was coming. You knew you had to fight. Hell, you wanted to. Being a healer they were your natural instincts, to help and heal the people in the forefront. But none of you anticipated things would take a turn for the worst. Within a span of short time you lost almost most of your friends from school. You knew it was only a matter of time since you lost your family too.
You couldn’t do this anymore. The fact that he might not return home after the next mission swallowed you alive. You had talked to Sirius about this but it was of no use. You wanted to leave but he wanted to stay and fight and be a freakin hero! It went from a talk to an argument where both of you were yelling at each other for no apparent reason. That's how almost all ‘talks’ regarding this matter ended.
You decided you had to talk to him. You had talked to Lily and even though she didn't fully agree to it she did say she’ll think about it considering Harry and the fact he deserved to grow up in a peaceful place. Well on your part it was selfish to even think about leaving in the midst of a war and boy were you guilty, yes you were but the fact that you might your loved ones seemed to kill you more.
A part of you knew that this ‘talk’ would end much like the previous time.
Halfway through your talking you noticed that Sirius wasn't saying anything, he was listening which was odd because all the other times when you had the ‘talk’ he would tell you that the world needed saving and both of you were doing your part, how you cannot flee because that’s what cowards do and his whole dramatic speech about being a hero which sent you fuming and well it was mostly just two people who love each other yelling at one another.
What you didn't expect was his silence where he patiently listened. If you hadn't known any better you would have said he was at least thinking about your decision but knowing Sirius he wasn’t going to agree to it this soon and this was what you feared the most. That part of your brain that always kept reminding you that nothing lasts forever. It was like your worst fears coming true. You managed to have a calm face but your insides were exploding. Your breathing became slightly ragged and you were constantly wiping the sweat off your forehead. One thing you were thankful for was from where Sirius was sitting he couldn't notice your fear or so you thought. Sirius came to the couch and sat beside you. He kept his hand on your thigh and the tears which you were holding back came streaming down. You turned your head away. You could hear him sniffling back a sob.
You knew he wouldn't run and you couldn’t stay like this in constant fear of what might happen and who might die. It was taking a severe toll on your mental health and you’ve reached your breaking point and as much as you hated to say it, it was true.
“I guess this is the end then.” You could see the pain and regret in his eyes, his lips quivering. All you wanted to do was to hug him and tell him everything will be alright but you knew if you did both of you would never be able to let go of the other and you knew deep down this was bound to happen no matter how much you denied it.
“I guess it is” was all that he said before he turned his face away letting the tears run down freely. You got up and packed all your stuff. You stumbled across a piece of clothing. It was a red sweater you got Sirius for Christmas. It was from ‘Mickey’s Twice upon a Christmas, a Disney movie you made him watch. It didn't exactly belong to Sirius, it was more like a shared piece of clothing which both of you wore when you missed the other. You picked it up and smelt it for one last time. It smelt of musk with a tinge of firewhiskey, a smell which you could well associate with Sirius. Trying to fill your entire body with his fragrance you folded the sweater and kept it inside your once shared cupboard and left.
Sirius was sitting downstairs in one of the dining chairs, his eyes bloodshot. He managed a weak smile. Before opening the door you turned back and said “I really thought that we would last”
