Fate Swap: A General Concept

             I’ve been looking for a creative outlet to deal with everything, and decided it was time to stop lurking in the Devil Survivor 2 tag, and actually contribute something. To that end…

             Y’all remember Arcana Swaps? They were/are this cool thing in the Persona fandom where someone would sit down and switch the social link/confidant characters around and see how that changed the characters and the story, often built on the meaning of the major arcana each character represented. For example, if Junpei from Persona 3 was swapped from the Magician to the Empress, he would be taking the place of Mitsuru as the future head of the Kirijo group. What would change about his character, what would a Junpei molded by those kinds of expectations be like? Of course there are a bunch of was to do this, keeping backstory/role but change just the personality based on Arcana meanings as an example.

             I don’t know if there is a really cool name like that to give to this little role swap thought exercise, but I guess you could say I Fate Swapped the cast of Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker . To explain my process, I typed up a list of each of the 15 playable characters in to excel in the approximate order I remember getting control of them and then I pulled up a random number generator. I went down the list, pulled a number, and designated the character a new Fate based on the character whose number on the list they pulled. All characters keep their canon ages and appear in the story approximately when the character they’re replacing would, but otherwise how I changed things isn’t necessarily consistent. Some characters I felt did not require deep overhauls to their backstory to fit the new role they’d been given, while other’s absolutely did, so it’s a mixed bag on that front. Disclaimer that I haven’t beaten the Meritocracy Route or the Anguished One’s route, nor have I attempted to interact with anime, so character’s base personalities are being informed by the other two routes of DeSu 2 and all of Record Breaker (I have played all these routes). Hibiki’s base personality in particular is being in informed by his dialogue options, so he’s a pretty smart, man of few words who loves his friends, and can be very silly and bit of a meme. If you read that character in a different way, very fair, that’s just how I took it.

Fool that I am, I put Miyako on the list (I should have put the Ticos, even though they aren’t playable, lol), so we’re just going to have to pretend Yamato had a very powerful twin sister who was secretly a weird alien planted into reality by Canopus in base game DeSu 2. Miyako here would be in charge of leading one of the other JP’s branches and she and Yamato would butt heads about what their role should be with the civilians during the crisis (Yamato would be as he is in the Septentrione arc, whereas Miyako would act as she does in her role as Chief Miyako during the events of the Triangulam arc). When the route split happens, she would refuse to side with any of the four others and would vanish. Once you beat Benetnasch, Miyako would reappear intent on enacting her plan to sacrifice all 15 of the main characters to save the world. In this the potential was within them all along, rather then them attaining it right before the first world reset. Defeating Miyako will give the team enough dragon stream power to force the Terminal to take them to Polaris, at which point the plot would more or less follow the canon story line, fighting Alcor, defeating Polaris, wresting control of the divine throne (and the astrolabe) and the ending would depend on what route the player was on. I won’t go in to much more detail because this is only meant to give a vague frame work to allow for her existence in this role swap, but I feel like Miyako would probably be very difficult (requiring high or maxed out fate rank) or even impossible to recruit in the Yamato route as it seems to go against the ideals she stands for in the Triangulam arc. I also think there could definitely be a “bad end” route where the protagonist can choose to go along with her plan either in a one choice scene, or whole route where you have to defeat all the others and hand them and yourself over to Miyako. But I digress.

All that said: I’ll share these with you in groups more or less corresponding to the city “teams” you can choose to face certain threats with in game, with one final group to round out the final four.

Devil Survivor 2 Verse – Nicaea Paranoia Ludger is a chef at a small family restaurant in Tokyo while his old friend from high school, Nova, works at a major banking company. Sometimes the two meet up after work, along with Ludger’s brother Julius on the occasion. Being the social butterfly between them, Nova mentions hearing about Nicaea, a “death face delivery site” and peer pressures Ludger into downloaded it with her. 

Later that day, Ludger and Nova get Death Face videos of each other getting chased by weird-looking monsters and eventually getting cornered in some back alley; Ludger attempts to protect Nova and dies as a result, though Nova dies not long after him. The two laugh it off since as if monsters are just going to suddenly appear in Japan. But as luck would have it, monsters do indeed appear and a small group chases after the duo, leading to their deaths as predicted in their Nicaea videos. But once Ludger chooses to live, what looks like a man in a white coat stands in between him and the monsters. 

Seeing Ludger’s bravery in the face of certain death causes the man, Kresnik, to heed Ludger’s call and form a contract with him without trying to kill him first. With Kresnik’s power, Ludger defeats the demons, though all that running and excitement causes Ludger to faint. Once he comes to, Nova is huddles around him with a weird pumpkin thing calling himself Pyro Jack at her side. Apparently some weird guys in uniforms tried to confront them, but Nova took off with Ludger at top speed. 

The two soon resolve to try and protect the streets of Tokyo from the lesser demons. Although when they see this huge thing in the water on Wednesday, Megrez, the duo do help engage the Septentrion. Bar that, the two largely keep out of JPs until the final days where the Void has them seeking asylum (along with JPs taking notice of their talent as demon tamers). 

Headcanons

Ludger’s ultimate demon would be Yurlungur and Nova’s Lord Nan Dou. 

Part of why Ludger and Nova don’t join JPs is to also search for Julius. 

They do eventually find him, though he’s joined with Ronaldo’s gang as he’d tried to barter with Ronaldo as a detective to help find Ludger. 

Ludger chooses the Female Tico. He thinks her peppiness is oddly like Nova’s and finds her kinda cute. Nova sees Ludger choose her and follows his lead. 

Ludger would be pretty nice to the party whenever encountered. Though all attempts to get him to join would be shot down until after Mizar was taken down.

I spent the last week blazing through Devil Survivor 2. Just need to do all the Triangulum endings, a Daichi ending and Yamato’s ending, and I’ve beaten all the storylines. I still need to beat Nebiros, Lilith (planning on beating her in my current playthrough though), Belberith, Beelzebub and Tico. My Demon Compendium’s about 93% full.
