One more year end post, this time on the animated shows, which, funnily enough, were mostly Chinese last year.
Watching Soul Land continues to be my Saturday ritual and I still haven’t grown tired of listening to the Angela Zhang song in the beginning of each episode. Maybe I really should try reading the novel as well. (Oh, and I’m playing the officially licenced mobile game as well. But only because I was missing that type of game and this appeared at the right moment.)
Thousand Autumns was a fun watch, since I’d already read the novel before watching the series. The donghua made Yan Wushi nicer than he was in the book, plus the tits out outfit and pimp daddy energy of the animated series was just hilarious.
Fulltime Magister, watched all three seasons after starting it on a whim on WeTV. The main character is ridiculously overpowered at all times, but it was still quite a lot of fun.
Mo Dao Zu Shi Q and The Grandmaster of Diabolism are really two sides of the same coin. The first is the silly chibi reflection of the latter. Finished all three seasons of this one as well last year - the timing just happened to be right when the final season came out in the Autumn.
The Carp Reborn is still a bit of a weird one with it’s concept of a modern day soldier transmigrating into a past world with cultivators etc. The second season continued the story with quite a few of the big families hunting after the main character and him having to choose his allies and enemies carefully.
I picked up Legend of Exorcism/Legend of Tang S1 because it looked interesting on Bilibili’s Youtube channel and then I found out later that both Dinghai Fusheng Records / The Epic of Divinity Light and Legend of Exorcism S1&2 are set in the same world, though in different eras, and both are based on danmei novels. I’d seen @dangermousie’s posts about the DFR novel before the donghua started, so I was interested in checking that out as well.
Can Ci Pin: Fangzhu Xingkong (The Defective) I watched entirely on my iPad on bilibili because that was the only option available (I hate you stupid country restrictions!), but I would have preferred to be able to watch it on my telly. The animation was gorgeous and I was intrigued by the story, since I’ve always been an sf fan.
No Doubt in Us was a cute body switch romance where a king and his previously much neglected wife switch bodies and come to understand each other much better and also really learn to love each other. A light take on court scheming dramas.
